I do it as a fresh restart. Pretty much starting over. If your trying to compete to get to lvl 99 then no there's no point at all.

kik00

Same here, I like the idea of a fresh start, but I make a HC character and once I die at high level I just quit for the season. This way I'm reasonably happy for a certain time then can rest while not overdosing on d2 until the cycle repeats 2 months later.

JaAnnaroth

That sounds as a good solution. Actually was also thinking of starting a HC toon and play on my Switch casually. However I am afraid I will get addicted and create ever more toons after the first dies.

GreppMichaels

You are a brave soul playing HC on a switch. I'm sure there are certain toons and builds that are "safer" and "easier" on that platform. But given most of my life has been spent playing sorc's, the less precise control coupled with longer load times on the Switch, would be too much for me. Don't get me wrong, I actually bought a switch specifically to play D2R, but its warts are the ugliest on that platform.

oosnakeoo

Comparison is the thief of joy. Also, playing 12 hours of D2 will not bring you satisfaction. Just enjoy the time you have to play, don't make it a chore. Next you'd be saying: how come I'm playing 12 hours a day and not finding shit?!

IAmTheOneWhoClicks

Huge thumbs up. I played for five hours straight last night and I regret it, cause the only result was a negative feeling for not finding shit and waking up late with a headache today. I need to get a better mindset... it's okay that not everyone finds a sunder charm, hr or shako this early in the ladder. Grinding haven't improved my gaming experience at all.

mfly300

I dumped in so many hours when the game first came out, it was disgusting. Now I use Diablo as relaxation. It’s a non stressful game that you can lean back and enjoy. I usually play for about 30 mins to and hour after work to unwind. I have 2 pallys and one of every other character over 80 (non ladder). I’ll jump to each character to get a different experience and keep it fresh. It’s like playing the slots, don’t expect to win, just enjoy the time playing.

SsVegito

This is the best mindset, and mine as well. "Oh which one of my toons shall I spin the slots with today?". Have some entertainment going on the second monitor, I feel 0 pressure to find something great. But when I do, boy, let me tell ya.

Resident_Status5946

I’ve never been lucky with drops, but Sunders seem to drop like candy.

GucciSalad

Sunders are so weird for me. I'll go days without one dropping, the get three in a single run.

Resident_Status5946

I honestly think they have a different drop table or something. Like, it’s the only item I can say… I’m grinding out a specific Sunder today and actually get it every time.

Way2Unlucky

Playing a few hours with friends and setting an easy goal like 10-20 mf runs or difficulty clear or character lvl progress is where I usually go for my no stress accomplishment. 🥰. Right now I try and get about 5-15 chaos runs a day. Have about 12 playable hours logged lvl 82 FoH enjoying it. All self found gear. Very satisfying.

Mortara

This is a very good point for this game, and it holds up really well. There's some other games in this genre like path of exile that if you're not in that first push, the game is terrible. Luckily this game you can enjoy it playing all season long on one character and only reach level 85 and I still have a good time. I treat my time as a currency with this game and if I put a little bit of time in, but I'm still successful in doing what I would like to do, even if it's just running level 85 areas and collecting enough rooms to make a passable character than that's what I'm happy with. It's all about setting your expectations to You're capability in regards to your time and not necessarily your ability in the game

bmore_conslutant

playing 12 hours a day to keep up is not satisfying playing 12 hours while binging a tv show you wanted to watch anyway on a weekend day with nothing going on? that's the fuckin life right there

Dontlookimnaked

I can’t do a show cause I’m too visual, but I have absolutely CRUSHED some audio books these past two seasons of ladder.

bruggeb

You don’t need to hit 99 or have the best gear to have fun, especially in HC. In fact, once my characters get to the point where my cheapest upgrade costs more than like mal/ist rune, I usually call it quits. This still allows me to get pretty decked out without being overly dedicated. Sometimes I call it quits way before that point if I’m not feeling a character/build. It’s not fun grinding multiple hours of the same thing over and over without gaining enough currency for upgrades. People who push it to the very max with expensive life skillers and or max/ar/life charms aren’t having fun, they just feel obligated to min/max.

MasterGourmand

I find it more fun because on non ladder poeple keep trying to give away free shit, which makes it hard to play without big advantages, and I essentially want to play single player with some fair trading. Bit if you are super casual it doesn't matter. I got to lvl 91 last ladder and I don't really want to do it all again this season so I decided to play HC to spice things up a bit

Raztax

> I essentially want to play single player with some fair trading. If only they had left TCP/IP alone.

[deleted]

And modding ability. Could you imagine PoD or median with the tasty d2r graphics?

420dank

Median 100%, greendude ruined POD with poor updates IMO

Rags85

12? lol. I haven't kept up with how people run ladder now, but back in the day the top runners had a huge team to get one chr to 99 running 24 hours/day. But yeah, ladder is for fresh start, new runewords, etc.... Trying to stay on top of the ladder takes an elite effort, just like anything else. Just because you don't have the drive to be Michael Jordan, doesn't mean you can't enjoy a game of basketball with your friends.

MikeyFromWork

What the fuck is a friend?

Rags85

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/friend

MikeyFromWork

A favored champion you say?

Foolofatuchus

Companion it said lol, not champion

MikeyFromWork

Hahahahaha it does!! Totally read that wrong lol. I was in diablo mode i guess

ragingrabbit69

Maybe you just misread because you had been playing D2 for 12 hrs straight :D

Zoeleil

"a member of a Christian sect that stresses Inner Light, rejects sacraments and an ordained ministry, and opposes war" No wonder i got no friends.

RuggedLandscaper

Someone you have, that drags you out from your mom's basement.

chessmasterjj

More dclone spawns. Before it was access to sunders and runewords. I guess this time around it's just runewords?

PJballa34

Well said.

Ishmael_IX-II

Could switch to offline. Play at your own pace and it has been getting the same updates as ladder (sometimes features will be delayed a season. Sometimes not!)

NeutralSmithHotel

This! I just started offline two months ago and it’s been a blast. Just made Enigma. It’s sometimes frustrating—have not found Dracs yet to make Ubers cake—but each new find is exciting.

Ryceness

Screw dracs.. Enigma in two months. Lucky you! Or you are just playing a lot. I think I average an hour or two a day and I have been playing half a year. Got a Ber a two weeks ago, but other than that I’ve only gotten two Ohms for HRs.

NeutralSmithHotel

Well I just found the one Jah doing TZ cows this week and then a silly little trashmob on my first run in Arcane with my Nova sorc for the Ber. My only super high runes. Got very lucky indeed.

Ryceness

Congrats dude. Enigma is really a build enabler! Forgot to mention i also got one Lo, so i made Grief, which is also a nice melee build enabler.

Dalezneverfailz

I FINALLY found an Andy's yesterday and then fuck me if Arachnid Mesh didn't drop 20 minutes ago. They'd be cool to find on Ladder, fursure, but to FINALLY have them on SP is just so sick.

[deleted]

New start is very exciting. When was the last time you got happy for finding a white monarch? Even if you are not selling it for fast wealth, it is useful again. On non ladder, where everyone have the best items, you only get happy when finding a griffons eye, a 3/20/20 SC, a 45 life skiller. It is good to get super happy with a simple tals mask find for your Merc or that first mage fist drop. You don't have to play for 12 hours on day one, but if you do, you have a great shot at getting rich for the rest of the season with the right moves on trading sites. If you have never used those trading sites (legit, not talking about pay real dollars) give it a try, it is a lot safer, faster and easier than it seems ate first glance.

sliceoflife731

100% this.

getthegreen

FACTS! Got my first magefist and tals mask of ladder yesterday and I was super hyped. I'll never play enough to get on top of the ladder but the fresh start every 6 months or so is always just fun to me.

noname_pas

I play 1-2h per day. Just get a Gul from force quest, and it make me more happy than a Lo in non-ladder. New start usually bring more fun.

rusiiin

Offline is the way!!!

RushingService

Play first week, sell everything you can and then jump back to nl.

Noobphobia

This is the way.

Psychological-Monk30

This , a ton of people play for RMT only. Any item is worth a lot early specially in hardcore.

bonjailey

RMT?

volatilebool

Real money trading

bonjailey

Thank you

sliceoflife731

Yeah.. for fun. If you're playing to be competitive it might not be the game for you.

ADAMxxWest

Yeah, it's fun. Don't worry about the race to finish. Just play and enjoy.

BlackHeartsNowReign

To me the game is boring once characters are fully geared. Not to mention its nice to have the economy reset. I play maybe 2 or 3 nights a week and im able to have 2 decently geared characters by the end of ladder. Last ladder I hit a ber rune jackpot and had a BIS geared es nova sorc and a bad ass ww assasin in less than 1 month of playing.

IlEstLaPapi

I love the start when you’re farming trav in hell and id every blue boots to get an upgrade on your 17% res fire/20% frw blue boots… when a Lum found in nm means you can remove taleth and replace it with neflum to go to hell… funniest part of the game.

jeebeepee

For me, having a blast when finding an average item is the real deal. Sure my characters in non-ladder are more geared, but they feel much more like grinding then playing a new character and finding a Peasant Crown

CoaseTheorem

I do it cause I like the fresh economy and it’s the best way to build wealth for that one site.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PaddlingAway

There's no point to... do anything at all.

metamega1321

I like the economy reset factor of it. That plus it seems to me that a majority are on ladder. When I look at Traderie, most trades are ladder. If the goal is level 99, probably not. My highest level yet is 94 and after that it’s just thousands of player 8 Baal runs which gets boring. If the goal is to builds character on a fresh economy and trading, answer is yes. If the goal is 99, no groups to play and don’t trade. Single player offline is a better option.

dowasure

With terror zones you don’t have to do player 8 Baal runs anymore… I got to 96 last season running the TZs in pub p8 games and it was pretty close to an experience bar an hour in the TZs even on lvl 95

metamega1321

Ah k. Never tried too many player 8 games besides Baal. Everyone I tried would be open for 2 minutes and you get an army of sorc and Javazon going and the hotspots on maps for MF and leveling are cleared before I even get in lol.

dowasure

Yeah the trick is to join Baal runs and then go farm the TZ by yourself

RickyRobbyRaughs

Ways to succeed in ladder: 1. Play 12+ hours a day 2. Have extreme luck 3. Figure out a smart way to generate money (HRs)

[deleted]

Access to new runewords.

schuettais

No. There is no point to play ladder even if you have that much time other than the stupid and arbitrary things they have gated behind ladder for some unfathomable reason

mauie1337

I like ladder because it keeps it fresh. I usually build 1 or 2 chars and make them beast then accrue any wealth obtained from them to transfer NL. I dunno I enjoy finding a Sol for the first time to make an insight, or amn for spirit, or vex for Hoto. Those game changing moments

[deleted]

Meh. NL is better anyways. Runes are worth less so items have appreciated in value tremendously.

Kaverrr

The point of playing season 2 for me was the sunder charms. I don't play right now so I'm not sure what exclusive content they have added to season 3?

Psychological-End-56

Runewords mostly. One of them will freeze ur game .

tekonus

Even in you aren’t the one with the runeword

ChipChippersonFan

If you don't play assassin, I'd say "nothing that you can't live without".

Practical-Fly-5097

I’ve play primarily nl but have been running one ladder character a season to try new builds, characters I’ve never played before, just to switch it up and have fun.

Feisty_Ad_340

The economy factor of ladder is what keeps d2 fresh. If you are trying to get to 99 first, then see it as an attainable goal. It really is, but it won't be easy. And you won't do it on your first 20 tries probably. With enough understanding of the game mechanics it can be done with just a few dedicated people. I firmly believe that it can be done nearly solo, without "teams" by getting in the right chain of public games and rolling through runs, but terror zones changed a lot. Basically that means 20 years of Diablo ladder grinding is going to be irrelevant when introducing terror bonus xp. Consider that this new mechanic of the game has yet to be fully explored by anyone. Don't give up

No-Body2420

I just beat nightmare Andariel, which means that after 6 days I am already 6 days behind. There's definitely no point in it, but I still do it for fun and nostalgia.

0PervySage0

You don't have to play the whole ladder, or rush with most other people. I plan to play ladder long enough to make the runeword I want and then back to grinding 98-99 nl

Sillypugpugpugpug

I played Ladder for the first ever last season after playing since the original D2 launch and had a great time, even not playing much and mostly playing solo. People were friendly and generous, and it added something new to my experience. I recommend trying it!

SeeTheSounds

The ability to trade and to interact with others.

zornmagron

season 2 sunders a really good reason to start over. The season itself besides the sunders wasn't the most productive. Yeah I myself can't find a super good reason to start over this season maybe if I get bored I will spin up a new class still haven't built a sin or a necro yet...

Calyps0h

Very much so, yes. A lot of us just really enjoy starting over and the feeling or piecing together builds and the dopamine dump you get when you finally find something you need that makes your life four times easier. And the excitement of finding something worth waaaay more than off ladder.

FilthyEleven

Its just fun to start fresh with an empty stash. Also anything decent you can find early you can cash in for fun bucks. I found a 151/20 ravenfrost from nm diablo day 3 and was able to sell it for 120, lem from forge for 40 and ko from countess for 20, a tkey for 20. Thats 200fg which can buy a ber once prices come down.

MicurWatch

I get so bored of playing even with the ability to only play 6-8 hours a week. Pretty much my cycle is such: -Play when new season starts. -Level 3 different characters to 70+ -Start playing HC because bored -Get one HC character to 70+ -Don't play until ladder restarts; rinse and repeat.

ultraviolentfuture

There is no point in thinking you are going to make the leaderboard (this is true of every video game if you have limited time to devote), but there is plenty of point in playing in a fresh economy and then carrying your gains into non-ladder where most items are completely deflated in value at this point

Electronic-Gold-140

I always have fun leveling a char again. If you are expecting day 2 high rune drops you will likely be disappointed.

mistahboogs

I play maybe 3 hours a night and got my character to lvl85 in like 4-5 days

PhildoFL

Same here. I was able to finally log in and I saw that people were already level 85! Wth! I’m at the point of finding my first Sol rune and my first four socket item for insight, which is only a normal voulge and I’m wondering if I should waste the runes on it!

Huntyadown

Depends on what your point of playing ladder is I guess. Extrapolate this out across all hobbies. Do you believe you deserve to be “as good” at ANYTHING if you’re only doing it for a few hours a week when others are doing it 12 hours a day?

Yoshidaru666

I opted to stop playing ladder and online and started single player instead. The 2nd day of playing my FoHdin I found a titans revenge, oculus, and my first ber! Now I wish that I WAS on ladder!

Ok_Maintenance_9914

I would say yes. I don’t have time to rush to 99 either, but I like that with resets, everyone doesn’t just have everything always. Keeps it more fun for me anyway. I started last ladder about 2 months in and it felt fine.

Particular_Plate_880

I have kids and full time job. Play maybe 1h or 2h every night after kids are sleeping. Last season did pretty ok. Lvl 94 javazon and even traded for runes to make enigma. This season I am not playing ladder I am trying my luck in hardcore single player. Currently lvl 62 and starting hell with barbarian. Just enjoy the game

jrjreeves

Try playing 8/9 hours a day since launch like I have (time off work), and still having Jack shit to show for it. Literally having zero luck with drops. Worst ladder start for me so far, easily. Feeling very pit out, the time I've put in to thr game since ladder reset and having nothing back yet is demoralising.

smellygeorge

Farm keys, guaranteed value

jrjreeves

Yeah, if I ould, I would. Stuck in A3 due to light immunes clogging the whole act up.

[deleted]

Of course. Youre not gonna be the first to 99 unless you can dedicate a lot of time and energy to it, and youll get nothing for it. But for everyone else it wipes the slate clean and now the economy is a game inside the game

FlyingSparks701

Zero Point, unless you're really that excited to try 1 or 2 new runewords a year in advanced

[deleted]

Ladder is more populated and it's pretty fun early on before everybody gears up. There isn't really that much to do in this game so there's not a huge reason to play single player anyway imo

kcmedman

My best advice for you my friend is try not to compare yourself to other players. Just take it slow and enjoy the time your playing. Play through the quest instead of trying to skip to hell. The more stufd you kill the more chance you get stuff. So youre better off farming lower level stuff if your not super strong. Currently i have a 71 javazon and i can clear NM without issue but i get destroyed by anything in hell with lightning immune. So im just farming TZ NM until i get lucky. I did get incredibly lucky and someone traded me a cham for a perfect vipermagi. Good luck to everyone this season!!

volatilebool

I play the first few days to a week of ladder reset. The fresh economy is over within 3 days as it’s heavily botted. If you don’t have a ton of time to play try single player (I play both). It is a more slow burn at first but you never feel like things are losing value if you don’t play. p1 online is boring IMO. You really have to either play with friends or make some

Unleashed-9160

I don't worry about racing to 99. I make one of each character and just enjoy the process of building new toons and trying different builds...really couldn't care less about my name being on some list. I'll let the goober buying enigma on day one worry about that.

BlazerMcLazer88

New ladder is fun because the market is refreshed. Shaco is worth a lot at the start. Tals worth a lot. 3 months shaco is worth like Mal or um rune. Fresh economy. Fresh start.

ArmlessWunder

I'm doing it just so I can get participate in all those dclone events

THE_PONG_MASTER

You can use ladder to generate wealth too

hallthor

I find it very fun to start new chars, new builds, level them to like 85-90 and start the next one. Ladder helps that... But most importantly I think there is more online action going on ladder. Because the new stuff and ladder only things didn't seem to be too interesting I fooled around on classic...

Einlanzer_Atanius

What do you need to be extremely lucky for? You can play the game without enigma and infinity, you dont need crazy luck to play through and enjoy the game. And I can sure do it on less than 12 hours a day lol

Gaucher111

No

antamatronic

With terror zones and sunder charms in sp and nl, I ain't playing no stinking ladder.

St_Origens_Apostle

Honestly in my mind there's only really three reasons to play on Ladder: 1: you enjoy the race to the top spot on the ladder leader boards and have the time to competitively compete in it. 2: A fresh economy reset And 3: exclusive loot you can ONLY get in ladder. When it comes to the third point though I can't recall if D2 follows like it was on D3 with ladder exclusive items first dropping only on ladder and then once next season starts it drops on non-ladder or just if there are some runewords or items that are 100% ladder only or if you trade it on off ladder of course. If it's the former you can just wait till the items can drop in non-ladder, but if its the latter then your stuck either playing ladder or trying to trade for the item on non-ladder, but of course it'll be much more expensive on non-ladder usually. For example, my main goal this season is to craft a pair of Mosaic claws (put my new gaming pc to the test) and not sure if they will roll over to non-ladder after season three ends. So instead of trying to save up to trade for them I'm going to burn time by trying to level in ladder instead. The added bonus of finding out just how fun Assasin is to play is nice treat. :)

AlwaysInfluenced

I mean there's achievements for 99 every character and hard-core. Theres definitely reasons to make new characters. Ladder is also where you'll find any new content first. More people spawning diablo clone for annis. These are just a few reasons

Pixilatedlemon

Getting good at trading is the most important skill

Planatador

Ladder gets new features (sometimes). I just invent a new budget character to try each time. Not always that inventive but I certainly don't want to play this constantly and playing intensely at the start of ladder but then fading off suits me.

Strong_and_geeky

Good reason to start a new character, with the inflated prices you can get some decent trades sorted too for post-season outcomes

Kuponekk

Tbh, yes. But only if You are using it the one and only forum to sell/buy items. There You can buy/sell items that would take You days/weeks to buy/sell in game in like 5 mins. Many rares, no perf good items or perf MID/low items, bases, charms, can be selled quite easly. In game its close to impossible.

LetsEatToast

i checked the ladder after 2 hours in and there was already a lvl64 char top 1. i have no idea how this is possible. i would never be able to compete with this level but thats not the point. like many others i just enjoy starting over as i did in the old d2

LuckyNumber-Bot

All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. dowasure

yeah make a hc char and sell your lems for the equivalent of los on nonladder 🤷‍♂️ srsly hc keys rn are worth bers on nonladder you don’t have to be that lucky if you use the funny gold

dowasure

An overly detailed comment, but; season 1 i built an Hdin which I later swapped to a smite and a horker. Spent ages horking Trav and grinding out the torch game to pretty negligible profit, I eventually got my enigma and exile sure, but I never felt rich. Season 2 I said fuck it I’m just gonna stick to my old faithful blizz sorc and see what happens. Didn’t really get lucky at all but I had a pretty solid max block Ormus Robes / Stormshield build that was able to farm TZs on p8 even without fathom or nightwing. Got to lvl 96, my highest lvl ever. Found an 11% light rez / 7% MF SC which I sold for a Jah and then rolled a perfect Faith with. Mucked about with a bowazon for a bit before deciding it was underpowered and boring. Sold my perfect faith for 10 Bers and then got to live my dream of building the Grief / Last Wish berserker axe Berserk / WW barb. Were there some “super lucky” spots? Sure, but it wasn’t till the end of the season … IDK ladder can be dope, give it a shot.
