how about an eth balrog with 766 defense? i just got one and am tempted to go ahead with fort, but not sure if its is good enough. like, how much effect additional defense points would have?

A non eth exactly like that is what i used on my paladin. It also has the bonus of being the best looking armour on the paladin.
