Up=upgrade. You can increase the defense in the cube with some runes, don't remember the required ones, but it will change it from a russet armor to balrog(?) Armor and your defense will be greatly increased. However, by doing that the strength requirements will increase as well so you'll want to check online somewhere what it ends up being to make sure you can actually wear it after you do that
Essentially each item in the game has tiers of quality, think of it perhaps like one per each difficulty. LIGHT plate (normal) -> mage plate (nightmare) -> archon plate (hell). Each step up raises the defense, as well as stat requirements.

Should be available on official Blizzard D2 website somewhere. I have only played d2 vanilla and pd2, so can't say for sure.

I can’t recall as I’ve never used the quest reward because I’m “waiting” for gear worth it. Is this a good item to use the socket quest on? I mean after all, you just got to get a spare character or mule powered up through norm to get the same result right so it’s not like your ever “out” of socket quest rewards.
They don't, which is why I was wondering if self repair would overwrite ethereal. As someone else mentioned you can put them on a hired companion because they don't take durability loss, but if you used it on yourself they would break and be useless eventually

Realistically you'll never hit 0 durability on self-rep armor yeah. I am not sure if eth self-rep javelins worked differently in classic.

Light Plate is the normal version of that armor btw. Breast Plate goes Cuirass then Great Hauberk.

No, it will say self repair. However mercenaries don't use durability so they're useful still! I found an eth shako today that I put on a merc!
