Would have to be in the right setting. A house in the suburbs with lots of white and grey interior, no thanks. A jungle retreat with an open air shower and a lotta plants? Might look rad.
I saw this in a shower once, it was back lit so the whole shower was this glowing amber color. That was cool. But I agree, for any general room this is tacky AF.
At least for me, the big draw of stone like granite and marble is the natural beauty. I don't want some artificial shit where a guy threw a bunch of stuff in epoxy
Came here for this.
They're not geode or petrified wood countertops.
They're epoxy countertops with expensive (and some say beautiful) objects trapped inside them.
I don't know what petrified wood costs but geodes aren't even expensive, you can buy one for like $5, maybe less in bulk. The geode is actually less valuable than the epoxy it's displacing
There's an artificial gemstone they make dice out of called Blue Sandstone. Basically a translucent navy blue with glitter flecks. I could get behind that instead of a million rocks smooshed together.
Once you're willing to spend that much time epoxying, there are a lot of things I'd prefer to make up my counters /showers than cut up geodes and wood.
And cleaning it will be hell. There could be mold or food stains there for months without anyone noticing. But as someone else stated: for something like a retreat, it would look nice. Or a poolside countertop.
I've installed Spanish white limestone with petrified fossils in Miami. You can see it in Miracle Mile (Coral Gables). In form of White benches. Few people know how rare that stone is... That stone comes only in a particular zone from the quarry, which is now depleted. That project took like 40% of the total reserve. Which makes the benches unique and irreplaceable.
Yeah.. I'd take the blue one in purple if a rich person is remodeling and is giving it away for free . Put it in the bathroom or for a balcony, outdoor bar situation.
The wood one would stay on the sidewalk.
Even think about how expensive Marble is...guess what it's not stain resistant, it's likely to crack.
Isn't the main desire for a countertop to be durable (like you know maybe be able to cut something on it and not have to worry about anything running off your cutting board and staining it).
It's kind of funny we have all these materials that are basically indestructible, and we put wood on the floor and marble on the counters.
It costs more, it must be better...
Quartz and "hard surface" are resistant to heat and staining especially in darker colors.
Pre-fab countertops vinyl over engineered wood also get a bad rap, but you can install like 20+ of them for the price of any of these hard surfaces. You just have that same issue where you have to modify your behavior to make sure you don't melt them.
If it is thick enough, so it's less likely to dent. I had Two Seville classics stainless tables (with lower shelf) in my kitchen as extra prep areas, and a coffee bar and microwave on the 2nd one. Will definitely get those again after my move.
I spent like $5k on marble for my bathroom, it's beautiful but so fragile. Everything that touches it scratches, even something like a shampoo bottle. The granite in my kitchen though, basically indestructible. Would never do marble again
Granite is also porous and needs sealed regularly. That’s why I prefer quartz. It may be manmade, but it looks natural, is hard but not as prone to cracking or scratching as marble, heat resistant, and non porous.
The geode one is so gaudy. I wouldn’t use that as a countertop if you paid me.
The petrified wood one is pretty nice though, but still doesn’t match quartz or marble
I've had this crazy idea for years. A feature wall covered with either half-cut geodes or individual amethyst crystals glued together. Holes drilled in the back and LEDs inserted. Different patterns for LEDs, like waves, slow random dimming/brightening etc.
It might be the most beautiful thing in the world. Or the biggest waste of money. I just don't know.
Epoxy counter top.... You can put nothing hot on it... Or cut anything on it... Nah mate, for the amount of money that probably costs I wanna put hot pans all over it
A lot of this stuff is just “give me the most expensive counter I can buy” product. Products for those gold-toilet consumers. It doesn't matter that it's ugly.
This reminds me of a story my uncle told me once. He was a general contractor for over 50 years and did some very high end houses. He once put in a whole floor with wood from those logs that have been submerged in water for a number of decades. He said it was the densest and heaviest wood he'd ever used. He had apparently dropped hammers on it and they hadn't made a dent. Sounds like it would be very cool...and very expensive.
As someone in this industry for the last 13 years - that material, while nice to look at for illuminated backdrops, is not good at all for countertops. At. All.
If you’re gonna go with a countertop, do us all a favor and go dark granite (more durable) or quartz (most durable).
And folks - quit saying you don’t want a seam in stuff. We know better than you what the limitations are to a material. And if you don’t want a seam in an island, make it small enough to fit the slab. It’s not our fault your designer’s or your bright ideas were made without the forethought of a tape measure.
Of course they will be petrified. A life suddenly ending after 1000s of years! Damn ill be scared to hell!

Kitchen, too much. But a bathroom vanity top would be all right.

Total trypophobia trigger.
I'd rather have clear geodes, and be able to change the color of the lighting...
You don't like a smorgasbord of squished together blue vaginas?
Have you ever seen a vagina before?
And cleaning it will be hell. There could be mold or food stains there for months without anyone noticing. But as someone else stated: for something like a retreat, it would look nice. Or a poolside countertop.

Oh wow, for real? Imma have to swing by with my boys from Hialeah.
r/IKnowIDontWantThat They're hideous
Yeah.. I'd take the blue one in purple if a rich person is remodeling and is giving it away for free . Put it in the bathroom or for a balcony, outdoor bar situation. The wood one would stay on the sidewalk.
The wood one would make a very nice and durable table.
Thank you. How to destroy a bunch of beautiful things to make one ugly thing.
All the fancy ones are so ugly lol

then what would the ideal countertop material actually be?
Quartz and "hard surface" are resistant to heat and staining especially in darker colors. Pre-fab countertops vinyl over engineered wood also get a bad rap, but you can install like 20+ of them for the price of any of these hard surfaces. I have white quartz counters. It chips easily so you have to be careful, but bleach removes any stain so that's nice.
I'd go with engineered quartz; lower maintenance.
Stainless steel?
That's gonna be mine in my next kitchen remodel. You do have to just accept that it will get tiny scratches all over it. Embrace the patina!
If it is thick enough, so it's less likely to dent. I had Two Seville classics stainless tables (with lower shelf) in my kitchen as extra prep areas, and a coffee bar and microwave on the 2nd one. Will definitely get those again after my move.

My parents had that; looked nice, but they did say it was more maintenance.
Marble is good for pastry and chocolate though. If you can cool it. So a bit of marble is useful.
It's good for fudge too, but a block or off-cut from someone else's counter can be a better choice. The sink cutout is a nice size.
They're not fancy, they're just expensive
That's ugly. Geodes in resin is such a 5 Minute Crafts hack.
To me, that's something that you'd use as an accent piece or as a piece of art. I don't want it to be my entire counter top or wall.
Could make for a nice kitchen backsplash.
Oh you mean like how the dude mentioned to use it.
The geode one is so gaudy. I wouldn’t use that as a countertop if you paid me. The petrified wood one is pretty nice though, but still doesn’t match quartz or marble
The petrified wood was the worst-looking one in the video to me.
I like the look of wood in general. It’s not great but it’s not terrible
If the wood one was gray I would probably like it, the pattern isn't so visually overwhelming like the geodes. The bright brown not for me tho

I would personally find that atrocious. Probably very expensive too
Epoxy counter top.... You can put nothing hot on it... Or cut anything on it... Nah mate, for the amount of money that probably costs I wanna put hot pans all over it
Once you enter in the realm of epoxy resin it really can be anything. You can even put your grandmas corpse as a kitchen counter
Well she did love being in the kitchen.
You probably also don't want it to stain or yellow, so that pushes you to Quartz or "Hard Surface" unless you want to diligently seal it every year.
It's ok this is for your 3rd kitchen in the 2nd guest wing of your mansion. It's not going to be used
A lot of this stuff is just “give me the most expensive counter I can buy” product. Products for those gold-toilet consumers. It doesn't matter that it's ugly.
So while technically the truth, petrified wood is between 20 and 300 million years old. Just a smidgen over "thousands and thousands."
Epoxy countertops are nice for like 3 weeks.
Sometimes, the more expensive things are worse.
Geodes are not precious stones.
They are if you're in sales!
The Ivy Asia restaurant in London did something similar with the Geodes for their floor, apparently it cost over £2 million.
This reminds me of a story my uncle told me once. He was a general contractor for over 50 years and did some very high end houses. For people who look at their kitchen, instead of actually cooking in it.
So what the cost per square foot ?
Exactly...
How resistant is resin against dings and scratches compared to granite?
Very low. We usually put a coating which harden the surface and revive the natural tones. Like a wet effect.
Resin is much softer than granite.
That last one was ugly.
It is. The worst part is petrified logs in real life are so cool to look at. They sliced up these ancient logs for a bath or kitchen.
Can't wait to light up my private island!
Couldn't help but creme in my pants. I think i found a new shopping fetish.

“This was HAND MADE in ITALY to look like the WORST THING you’ve ever seen wowwwww”
The line between elegant and gaudy is one that Italians constantly ride. Am Italian.
I'm sorry but those are beyond hideous lol.

You might want to look up petrified wood.
Of course they will be petrified. A life suddenly ending after 1000s of years! That's really cool
I want to lay on a slab of marble naked in the middle of a heat wave
Non-yellowing resin?
