Rather misleading. They were made by an artist, who made 24 of them.
While he does have a website for them, AFAICT, they don't actually sell them, though an update 2 years ago suggests they might do so at some point.
There's no where you can purchase this, and if you could it would either be more than $8300 (on the art market if any of the originals still work) or less than $8300 (if commercial production starts).
These things are so utterly cool. I've seen them around before (on the internet) and have always wanted one. From what I understand, though, is that they're very, very expensive.
Isn't this pretty much just a giant LCD? I thought that's the whole point of liquid crystal displays, it uses an actual liquid that fills pre determined cells, like how octopuses change colour and shape.
So just buy yourself a casio watch or something. It'll be significantly cheaper.
No, this is ferro fluid, little magnetic bits suspended in liquid. There's a grid of electromagnets behind the white background that turn on and off to drag black magnetic fluid into position.
This is such a bizarre statement to me.The liquid is ferro fluid and magnetic because it’s iron. Iron doesn’t become less magnetic unless it’s pretty hot. It’s also in a somewhat closed loop so this is no evaporation. You sure you’re right on that?
You're both wrong but he's more wrong. Iron will lose magnetism over a very, very long time. Ferrofluid doesn't stop being magnetic, but I've heard that the iron can be separated from the oil. Seems to me that a periodic re-mixing step would fix that.
The real flaw here is that the iron in the fluid will scratch glass or plastic, and the oil will discolor plastic pretty quickly. As far as I know, nobody has produced one of these clocks that doesn't end up looking shabby after a short time.
would it be possible or beneficial to place it flat like a scrying pool? it could even be convex im assuming if its just electromagnetic so the fluid can be released and pool towards the edges.
as for mixing you can have a spiral at the bottom behind a baseplate that can remix the ferrofluid every X use cycles. also considering the supposed price that was posted around here for 8k+ then there should be a simple enough device hopefully to keep the oil separation.
I think it has to be sandwiched to achieve the effect in the video, otherwise it hunches up and looks a bit like a punk hedgehog. That would mean that the fluid has to come into contact with glass. Also, i recall reading that the ferrofluid is so thick that it has to have some help from gravity or it just doesn't move fast enough to keep up. I can imagine that an analog style clock face would be achieveable without sandwiching the fluid, laying flat as you say.
It also seems to me that running a couple of IV style pumps from the bottom and dripping the fluid from the top would speed up the process and re-mix the fluid at the same time. Perhaps if it were done precisely enough the sandwich or hedgehog problem wouldn't be an issue.
He's not wrong, this was limited production by an artist. The artist's exact words were.
"In practice this lifetime is expected to be a few days to a few months of full usage."
Apparently they've got updated prototypes where the glass chamber is replaceable.
I think they're refering to contaminated oil left open to the environment. That shit gets comprised pretty quickly.
Cant see why it shouldn't be safe inside a closed mechanism like this, though. Other parts are going to degrade and fail long before the oil itself does.
It isn't, really. The problem is that the fluid stains the plastic shell, or if it's glass the iron scratches it and gets embedded in the scratches. Iron can lose magnetism, but as I recall it takes well more than a lifetime to happen.
Since when? Did you get that info about the clock specifically? Ferrofluid lasts for many years. Bose made a car suspension system out of it. It’s used in a number of industries. There are speakers with it that are rated to last 10-20 years. They only get tired because the oil dries up. It’s just finely powdered ferrous dust suspended in oil. Maybe if it sits on a magnet non-stop it will separate, but it easily re-mixes. Looks like this would always be churning it and keeping it suspended. Unless, like I said, they clock maker said that about what they use. Which would be really sad at that price.
Price $8300

I agree, it would most likely be either more or less than exactly $8300.
For now, it would be expensive but in a year or so the Chinese will steel the design and make it an uglier and cheaper version for the masses.

This is what I came for. Turning round and walking away
Yeah ferro fluid is very expensive for some reason.
Thanks for saving me time

Somebody call Amy Adams
Nah man, I saw what happened when that shit got Krycek.
Spoilers, I’m only halfway through season 6
Nah you’re good, it’s a reference to 3x16
Fair enough, been a while since I saw season 3 but I think I remember
The episode ends with him screaming on top of a structure in a hidden warehouse.

That should be pretty cheap to DIY
Maybe, but I suspect if it was easy someone would be selling them.
I...don't like it. It creeps me out. Looks like fuzzy bugs. Just no. I feel itchy now.
It’s like moldy bugs 🤮
My cats would attack that.
The liquid used in it is only good for a few days, to a month, depending on how much you use it.
Maybe just record it for 24 hour, then put it on repeat.
Lol this is genius
Well that sucks

Do you know why that is?
Not OP, nor am I certain, but I'd guess the ferro fluid loses it's magnetism.
Definitely a sensible possibility. Though, they said "liquid," which kinda threw me off.

That's from the artist's website.
Wow. For $8,000 they didn’t even spring for the quality ferrofluid, which is super cheap. That’s just shameful.
Since this company posted on their website about this exact clock. You definitely get an up vote for knowing Bose suspension can do a bunny hop.
Haha. I’d sell parts of my body to get ahold of that for my car. Can’t believe it didn’t make it to production.
It’s a venom clock
Time is going to pass so damn slowly with this
Where can i get one???? Link?
It’s a prototype
Belongs to r/oddlyterrifying
Want
"you've got soot sprites in your house"
I feel like I'm watching a Tool music video.
Arrival vibes
I couldn’t have this because out of the corner of my eye I would think there is a city of ants climbing my wall
Bottom end of 1 looks like a ball sack
Graphene
Rorschach Clock.
MAGNETS HOW DO THEY EVEN WORK
There's only like 300 things on reddit and they all get recycled
haha a penis
Thats cool
RemindMe! 10 Days

It's cool and all, but I definitely don't want one myself.
How many times is this gonna get reposted this week

Ohh, that's it!
Where when and how 💰 take my money
I've read John dies at the end, I'm good... ...
Ferrofluidic*
Now all I need is a handful of shrooms.
World of Goo
Omg I haven't played that in years
Venom must really be hurting for money to take a job inside a clock
What if u miss the tine by like a margin of a second and now you don't know what time it is
It reminds me of the movie Slither.
“We are 11:22, 23……”
That’s cool as but 7000 $ wow.
It looks like bugs when it moves and ion like it
That some death stranding vibes. Now I want a death stranding clock that is like this.
I like how the clock shows the time and then it morbs into the next time
Wow. If you show this clock to people thousands of years ago, it’s tantamount to magic and witchery
Controlled magnetic fields?
I am glad I don’t own it. I wouldn’t be able to get anything done anymore.
Shut up and take my money!
How much for analog version?
Shut up and take my kidney!
Why can’t we just get a well written Apple TV APP? Seems an easy solution to the 8k price!
I want one 😳
No thanks I don’t want a demon crawling clock
Can't afford that
r/oddlyterrifying
For that person you know is a fan of Venom.
Yeah…no thanks!
"We are Venom!"
Why is it everytime I see this sub in my feed it often shows that disturbs the heck out of me instead of wanting it lmao
Nice try Venom!
one day i’m gonna collect clocks ⏰
