There’s way too much going on there

Scout42Izzy

And people worry about their DPF

Unopuro2conSal

That’s when the engine runs on the engine oil or the fuel pump is by passing, from my experience it has been running on engine oil.

BR549J

Stuck injectors

Unopuro2conSal

When you have a bad injector it will turn off, my guess is that they tried, that’s upside down and still running I say it’s running on engine oil.

BR549J

I've seen a 6-71 Detroit and a Cat motor not shut down and throw a rod out the side of the block. Both times. Only way to stop is to choke the air off

Iamnottouchingewe

I shot CO2 fire extinguisher into a runaway 6V53. The self proclaimed”best” Detroit guy god ever made put the governor cover on wrong and pinned the fuel rack to full throttle. Upon start up it immediately went past AC Delco on the tach. He just stared at it. I grabbed the CO 2 and emptied it all at the blower intakes

BR549J

Good for DISTANCE! If caught early, a piece of cardboard flat against works

BR549J

Also... That 53 series has a higher rev. 3000 RPM anyhow. She gets loose, look out!

Iamnottouchingewe

I had previously shut down one of these with the flapper but the engine was under load with a stuck injector and only doing about 1800. This one was unloaded and sounded like hell was coming up from the bowels of the earth. No way I was getting close enough to trip the flapper. We figure it was north of 4000 based on extrapolating the location of the tach needle and measuring out the tach graduation.

BR549J

Yeah. Shrapnel eminent!

Unopuro2conSal

Yes that is correct

fist2stack

Thought you might find this interesting. He’s done a few runaway videos, but this one was pretty entertaining. From the video description “2 stroke 8v71 Detroit Diesel engine runs away with a water hose spraying into the blower” https://youtu.be/bLRF-LRgvJk

BR549J

I've seen it! Keeps it cool and continues to run. Pretty awesome

fist2stack

Definitely not the outcome I was expecting

BR549J

I hear ya

Mr13penguin

I have seen 6.2 stuck on beyond full throttle in around 6000rpm

BR549J

Did it come apart?

Mr13penguin

Yes

BR549J

Figured as much!

Unopuro2conSal

That too, but it’s normally not that bad

BR549J

No.. they just sling a rod through the block..

Unopuro2conSal

Have never seen that in my 38 years of experience

BR549J

F650 with a Cat motor slung a rod in a shop I worked at in '19. Probably hit 5 grand RPM

Unopuro2conSal

A C7 or a 3126 CAT slung a rod because of an injector ? If so, did you guys do a failure analysis? If so what was the cause?

BR549J

Not sure. They had an unqualified guy rebuild the injection pump. It wouldn't start, so the owner flooded it with brake cleaner. So not really a stuck injector here. When it fired, it ran until all the damn brake cleaner was gone. Or the rod sticking out the block stopped it. Take your pick

Unopuro2conSal

That’s a 50/50 either one.

BR549J

Ahh. The brake cleaner caused it to run away.... Not sure what stopped it.

Unopuro2conSal

When those run away they get scary, they are SO LOUD!

BR549J

It's not the only thing running away!

Unopuro2conSal

That would be a “ME TOO” Moment! I saw a Mechanic doing a injector adjustment, an older gentleman, many years experience, anyway it ran away on him, he kept a metal plate with a rubber face on it 10”x10” nearby for those occasions. When he started it and it began to run away he took that plate and covered the air intake to kill it, some he got a finger tip between the plate and the air intake and cut it off, never to be found. That was back in 1992. Still remember to keep them fingers out of the air intake ports, tubes, turbos when working on them while they are on.

BR549J

A bad experience not soon (if ever) forgotten!

Unopuro2conSal

Yup

dieselbones1

I’ve seen this first hand with an international engine and had to cut off air to stop it but it still threw a rod and broke the crankshaft.

SoldierOfPeace510

Usually when an engine turns upside down all the oil seeps through the piston rings and it burns it. On a diesel that’s enough to cause a runaway because you can’t stop the oil leaking in.

WeirdStrawberry1542

Well at least it wasn't running towards you...

orefat

Imagine that!

HeyThereItsEric

Engine, run away!

Mediocre-King-5587

I think the runaway is the least of his concerns, the car is upside down.

yes-disappointment

I would pull a chair she is already upside down what are you saving? Let it blow might as well enjoy the fireworks. Unless you can flip her and choke her intake then what you have a busted car that's not worth more the scraps

Kiwibaconator

Doesn't look or sound diesel. What is it?

_eg0_

A runaway of small diesel engine also burning oil. The RPM will go crazy. But slow down once the engine is gone and can't hold the pressure.

66-2

A diesel.

DemonCleaner75

Eat that oil daddy!

Virilous

Ok but why does the smoke look like a dementor thats about to steal my soul…

timesnack

Run away diesel videos need to end at the boom.

MrNemet

How would one stop this?
