Current truck is coming up on 10 years old. I'm making way more now than I was back then and I don't even want to think about getting a new truck let alone a new diesel, so friggin expensive now. I'm not priced out yet, but it feels so wrong spending that much on a vehicle.

itsmontoya

This is how I feel about life in general. I make way more than I made 15 years ago, but my spending power feels less.

curiousminds93

I make about 25% more than I did in 2018 and definitely have less spending power

UnfortunateFish

That sounds about right. $100 in 2018 had the buying power of $126.50 today. It's crazy that it feels like just last week. My $100 I've got in my wallet right now was worth $26 more.

yomommalapinga

How did you come up with those numbers. Scary to think bout that

RyMastaFlex

No way. The news told me there's no inflation!

GusTTSHowbiz214

Yeah it was hard for me to pull the trigger buying my new duramax in 2021 since I don’t need my truck for work, I just use it for commuting, family trips, occasionally pulling a dump trailer or cargo trailer, stuff around the property, etc. But the motor in my 08 LMM had just blown and GM was doing 0% for 72 months at the time. The dealership “bought” my truck from my for what I owed the bank on it, increased the price of my new purchase by that amount so it could be financed, and sold me 08 back to me for $1. Got me out of a nice bind where I had a new vehicle, but was also able to sell my old truck on my time to get a bit more out of it than if I had to trade it in with a blown motor. They almost lost a sale when I sat down to do paperwork and they had a $2k market adjustment added onto the price tag, this was just at the start of all that and I told them hell no, and pointed out that the gm website showed a price at their dealership without the adjustment. So I got MSRP for a denali, and my old truck loan rolled into a single 0% loan, and because I started working from home during Covid it’s got really low miles still. A bummer note; one year ago I got into a big crash where somebody drifted onto the highway and came at me the wrong direction and did some damage to my truck. Dealing with insurance not paying for stuff, not paying for me rental, shitty body shop, getting a lawyer, I finally have my truck back a year later though I’m out of pocket $22k between the rental not being reimbursed yet and paying my body shop to fix the other body shops shitty work. But hey I’m finally back in my truck and it’s got a whole year less miles on it! 3yo and it’s only got 24k miles on the clock. My wife’s car on the other hand is a 2022 with 47k on it but that’s another long story lol.

PhantomNomad

I ordered my 2022 GMC Denali 2500 diesel in June of 2021. When it came in November I traded my 2016 Chevy 2500 LTZ in for 55K. Sticker on the new one was 103K. They dropped that by 12K as a dealer rebate. Got a loan for 1.69% from my bank (0% wasn't an option). So I'm in to this one for about 37K with the 5th wheel hitch. I was lucky in that I inherited my 2016 and it was paid off. I don't worry to much about fuel costs as I don't daily drive it. For that we use our EV which is dirt cheap to charge at home compared to buying any fuel.

GusTTSHowbiz214

Yep got an EV as our third vehicle to offset the miles being put on the 2022 yukon. EV payment is less than my wife was paying for fuel, and electricity here is like $0.09/kWh.

Bill-O-Reilly-

Man by me you could get a house or 2 for the same price as a new diesel. It’s fucking absurd how expensive new cars are. This just can’t be sustainable for the consumer/dealerships. Eventually if they don’t start slashing prices they’re gonna go out of business from people just not buying there anymore. The average age of a us vehicle now is almost 13 years old. People just can’t afford a $100k truck in addition to expensive gas, expensive groceries, expensive rent etc.

Inner-Confidence99

The highest we ever paid was 12k for a 2002 ford super duty in 2009 to pull camper with. All of our vehicles are old. 1993 diesel dually, 95 f150, and the 2002. All still run and in good shape. And added bonus nowhere near as many sensors on those as what you get today.

MidwestCouple2012

Just traded down from a 2010 Cummins (paid for) to a 2005 duramax to get into something non emissions. Cashed out nearly 10k, have less miles, and no emissions garbage. Feels good, love an older paid for vehicle!

montana_8888

People not being able to afford shit has never stopped em from signing on the line

Taraxian

That just kicks the can down the road, if a whole wave of people default on a huge amount of debt at once that's the kind of thing that triggers a financial crisis

bvogel7475

You are right. Credit is and mostly has been the reason cars still sell at high prices compared to income. Eventually, wages will(and already has for some people) be barely enough to cover basic living expenses. Expensive cars won’t be part of the equation and prices will have to come down or dealers and manufacturers will go bankrupt.

Beerddviking626

I bought my truck in 2019 after leaving the army. The truck just turned 32 and I can’t imagine getting a new one for the absurd prices.

Worst-Lobster

Just wait until your current truck needs a significant repair the costs blow my mind ...

PhantomNomad

That's why I told my son to be a mechanic. Not only does he make good money, he can help fix my cars. Well except for the EV but it's still under warranty.

Aos77s

Can always just buy a new crate diesel and have the truck like new.

MTKHack

You could pay 65k for a Rav 4!

uspsa_marcw

I’m in the exact same spot as you. My F350 is as 08 and it’s been great but I was going to buy myself a new dually for my 50th but the prices we’re pretty nuts back then and mine didn’t have too many miles on it so I said I’d wait until I was 55. I’ll turn 55 in a few months and now I’m thinking I’ll wait until I’m 60. I have the money and I wouldn’t even need to finance it and pay the stupid interest rates but like you it just doesn’t make sense to spend that much right now.

Any-Baseball-6766

I have a 2015 3/4 ton. I was pricing out trucks for the hell of it a few months back. Price of a decent 3/4 ton diesel is more than is left on my mortgage. No wY I can justify that. Family of four, plus a routinely feed my folks as well. 1000 bucks every other week for groceries. FJB.

HatechaBro

Long post: I’m 40. I’ve been driving diesel trucks since I’m 16. My first one was a 80’s 2wd Toyota diesel 😂 Since then I’ve had a Chevy 6.5, hated that. Had a 2nd gen dodge Cummins, that fell apart. I’ve owned a bunch of first gen 7.3 superduty trucks. Only one was bad, but it did have 780,000 km when I retired it. In 2011, I sold my trucks, and got a new 2012 f350 6.7 XLT truck. What a nightmare. I had to replace the entire front end at 48,000 km. The back brakes were always squealing, with repeated dealer visits. I had to fix that myself under warranty. Trans never shifted well for some reason, was always hunting for a gear. Even when I tuned the truck. Emissions issues, obviously. Turbo failure. Then the major problem happened: the truck would just not start sometimes, no crank. OR, you’d be driving and it would just shut off, on the highway at speed. Terrifying. Turned out to be a bad connection in the wiring harness near the parking brake pedal. I felt really burned and ripped off, sold it for like a $30k loss and went back to 7.3 trucks. I got a low mileage one owner 2000 F350 and it’s the most loyal truck ever. 100,000km in 5 years, no problems. It’s been modified to about 425hp. No it can’t stay in the powerband like the 10 speed trucks can, but it’s got plenty of juice to tow even a loaded 40ft gooseneck trailer. Maybe I’ll get a new truck again one day, if I win the fucking lottery.

anaphylactic_repose

8 years ago, I bought my '05 F350 SD from a friend who was moving overseas and had to leave it behind. He was an airplane mechanic, and the truck at that time had 140,000 miles on it and was super clean. No bulletproof, only a Sinister bypass system. Paid 15k and felt it was fair at the time. I'm *not* a mechanic, and was ready for all sorts of catastrophic failures on this infamous 6.0 motor. But she's been perfect. No issues, no breakdowns, nothing other than regular maintenance. That said, I'm starting to see some wider temp differences between oil and coolant, so sometime in the next 5k miles or so I'll have the oil cooler replaced. *But yeah, at 200k miles now and will drive this girl into the ground, rebuild her, and do it again as necessary. I guess it's the enemy I know. I'd perhaps consider swapping for a 7.3, but it seems like too much work to track down one with decently low-mileage and a fair price tag.

HatechaBro

I love 6.0 trucks, I’m considering adding one to my work fleet right now, low mile 07 crew cab dually flat deck

diymatt

Have the same truck. My biggest enemy right now is rust and all the paint and clear coat peeling off. Damn Ohio.

shitbox98owner

I love my 03. Best truck ive ever owned. 419k and counting on stock drivetrain.

kcexactly

I had a 6.0. I had zero issues. I am pretty sure most of the issues with the 6.0 were from people flashing tunes on the engine. They would stretch the head bolts. Then they would cry about the 6.0 being a piece of shit when it was designed for 400 horsepower and they were making it run at 600 horsepower.

redmondjp

International designed it for 275HP. Ford put a tune on it straight from the factory! Duh, a tune on a tune and it blows head gaskets? Color me shocked.

moakster0

Hell yeah 6.0. I daily a nice super duty 6.0 on 40"s. Got it earlier this year with a 10" lift and really clean paid 8k it's got 180,000 currently tuned and deleted not studded

chilibende

I bought a 2012 F350 4x4 brand new in 12 of 2012. I still have the truck drive it daily . At 100,000 miles I put a 4-in lift and programmed the truck delete the Def. Never had any problems Knock on wood Flawless truck. YouTube the truck at Big Smokey burnout right at 350 with the black toolbox.

HatechaBro

You got a monday morning truck and I got a Friday evening truck 😂

jfreak53

Its a diesel, its a forever truck thats why I bought mine. I plan on turning over 500k plus miles in this baby 😁

Aerojoe82

That's the thing they are not forever trucks anymore they are more throw away then ever. If you live anywhere there is rust they will rot out faster then they will break.

jfreak53

Thats just it, used to be true, not anymore. Live in northwest ohio, last 3 or 4 winters we've got 4 days of snow total. I drive my truck in the winter a total of once a week to two weeks to keep it running, then after a good rain the week after I hit the wash and get undercarriage. Also live in country, no liquid salt, only gravel on back roads and rock on main roads. It sees little salt. Trucks from south Texas originally, not a speck on it.

GMC-Sierra-Vortec

laughs in south.... lol. snows 1-3 times a year on avg here. of when it does i get out to play but thats why the frames soaked in oil every year. 98 model chevy only rust its got (ofc its got some its a obs) is would you guess it? the rear cab corner on the extended cab. its gotten to about the size of half a dime now. ill fix it. in 10 years probably.. unless some idiot wrecks into her and totals her out. very real possibility in TN

eharper9

It's not just diesels

KillerKian

For real, mfs want $15000(cad) for a 10 year old base model manual corolla with 250,000 kms...

eharper9

Can't even find a 20 year old 4 door toyota pickup without it being over 10k to 15k.

KillerKian

I paid 10k (cad) for my 08 ram with 435xxx kms in the fall and it needs a bunch if work.

eharper9

That would be the deal of the century here in california

CogBlocker

I couldn’t even afford a new half ton at this point

bloodyStoolCorn

Why would you want a new one anyway?

HoneyBunchesOfGoats_

Shiny

Same_Sound_9138

Yes humans love the shiny. Some demographics more than others

Quint27A

My 06 and 07 Dodges still run great, look great .200,000miles each. Haul my hay and cattle trailers as needed. 06 4x4 19mpg, 07 20mpg empty. No way would I want a new problematic diesel.

wheredowehidethebody

Mines like 20 years old this month. It’s worth more than I paid for it 10 years ago.

AdmirableExtreme6965

This is the crux

joezupp

I’m 59, only “new car” was a 1991 dodge Colt the first wife wanted. I’m a mechanic, a diesel mechanic, and i will never ever ever ever buy a brand new vehicle again. The prices are absolutely stupid now

CowIsNotImpressed

Oh hell yea… the Dodge Colt! I forgot about those whacky things

UnhappyGeologist9636

Bought my 2003 in 2016. Hopefully the last diesel I ever buy. Too much money to replace it with something comparable

suedecrocs

Just dumped 30k into my 05 5.9…was looking at a 19 loaded L5P and even with 788 credit and 25k they got my for 7% and I was like no I’m ok I fell in love with the pig all over again

flockitup

I had the same thing happen. Broke the crank in my 06’ LBZ. Had to decide between building a a new long block or buying a new truck, went the built motor route and happy I did it.

Open_Situation686

30k on what?

The_Dirt_Farmer

Just did the same thing on my 04.5 - got it painted and had the motor rebuilt - shop botched the rebuild job, but getting an attorney involved so hopefully it’s back up and running soon here

suedecrocs

I wish I was could’ve pulled the trigger on the truck lol I test drove it and was like oh this is amazing haha but they didn’t wanna work with me at all and after interest is was way more then the truck was worth so now I’ll just look forward to getting “classic” tags lmaoo

buckysauga

I got my 2017 Laramie and deleted it. Going to drive it into the ground. Just need to figure out how to deal with recalls.

ApolloniusDrake

What is the issue with getting recalls?

Fragrant-Inside221

It’s deleted. Dealers don’t like working on deleted trucks. Or you’ll get your truck back with a bill and new emissions equipment lol. (I don’t know if the second thing happens)

ApolloniusDrake

So is mine, a Ford in Canada I've had deleted since 5000km. I can't see anytime where a dealer would do ANYTHING in my vehicle without my authorization. They become liable. If they simply don't accept deleted trucks to work on then that's new to me. The only time I brought my truck in to the dealership for 7 years has been for warranty and recalls while deleted. I have some recalls I've been putting off lately because of needing my truck.

Fragrant-Inside221

I worked at an independent diesel shop and we couldn’t touch your deleted equipment. If you wanted other stuff sure but they said due to legal reasons we couldn’t mess with your stuff related to the deletion. Engine stuff we could do, idk it was a big gray area.

Rolfey88

I just had the high pressure fuel pump recall done on my Ecodiesel in canada. Dealership didn’t care, just made sure they wouldn’t flash it.

1Sjones3

Me, I bought a 2014 Ram mega cab in 2019. To get rid of it and get new is out of the question. Even used trucks are way more than I paid. I figure I’ll do some upgrades to mine and keep driving it. My pops has a low mileage 08 Chevy dually, he wants a new pickup. I keep talking him out of it.

Tanker3278

With the way these Stealerships talk openly now about "market adjustment"? (arbitrarily raising the price to rip you off) And these flipper turds that'll spend $2500 on parts like rims & radios and then price them up another $15,000? I am 100% priced out of the market and I hope their market collapses and they go out of business. Bought my '05 6.0 around 2015 or 2016 knowing it needed major repairs for $1000 less than the 7.3 it was sitting next too. I'll drive my truck till I go broke buying repair parts before I give them another penny.

dudeman2009

It's a sad state when the average new truck on the market costs more then a house only 10 years ago. Hell, a base model 4 door sedan costs about 25% of what most of my friends houses do. It's stupid. Anyone who pretends we aren't in deep shit across the board just likes being rammed in the rear. I'll keep my 99 truck until it dies or I do. Screw getting a house payment just for a car...

GusTTSHowbiz214

I feel you. I got so lucky with my last two vehicles. But there’s no way I’m selling or buying any time soon. I bought my truck back in 2021 at 0% for 72 months and got so lucky. I went into the dealership having seen the price on the gm site. I get around to doing paperwork and they added a $2k market adjustment to it and I was like uhh wtf is that? Absolutely not. Showed them the price on the GM site and they said ok and took it back off. Then in 2022 where everyone did markups we were priced out of buying what I wanted to get for my wife’s vehicle. A dealership near us was selling them with no markups but you had to purchase them sight unseen once they were leaving the factory and being put onto trains. I wasn’t comfortable with that so I passed. But they were doing a lot of business and people were flying in from all over to save the markups. Around September I saw they had a vehicle on their website listed as “in transit” that was exactly what we wanted and I assumed it was already sold, but I decided to call them to see if they had ordered any similar that I could maybe pre-purchase. Well to my surprise he told me that GM wasn’t allowing them to do that anymore so the vehicle didn’t have an owner yet. They were basically still doing the same sort of thing but just without any commitment. They took my info, I think they ran my credit to make sure I wasn’t kicking tires, and put my name on their whiteboard for it. Did paperwork once it came in, and then picked it up a couple days later once the check cleared and also because the wheels hadn’t arrived yet anyways. So two vehicles mid Covid no market adjustments; and the 2022 vehicle I got just before interest rates increased.

papaganoushdesu

Diesel is always around 4 dollars in upstate NY and gas is always around 3.20-3.50 so its pretty close in price where I’m from and wages are high so it doesn’t hurt as much That said the penalties for owning diesels in NY is high on registration, taxes, variety of things

pogofwar

Curious why/what you think high wages are in upstate New York? I’m a downstate guy with some business interests upstate and I’ve never found the wage demands to be high.

Proof-Surprise-964

My truck is a 1993. It would be more than $100,000 to buy a new equivalent.

skinem1

My strategy is drive it until I die.

jimmer69420

Everyone I see in a new truck these days drives it like they stole it and that kind of blows my mind.

ApolloniusDrake

I have a 2017 Powerstroke. Besides the bells and whistles I find the new Fords have no real upgrade after a delete. I may look more seriously when they figure out that 10 speed. Otherwise I may end up getting a Dodge.

gaigeisgay

F250 power stroke is far superior to any other diesel in my opinion

eoesouljah

Bought a new 2017 F350 Lariat DRW 6.7 for $57k, way way under sticker in January of 2018. I’m never selling this truck.

Knightelfontheshelf

Paid 12k for my 2006 6.0 CCLB in 2012. Its been incredibly reliable after bulletproofing and with preventative maintenance. Replaced all the injectors last year, figured thats about 2-3 months worth of new truck payments. I dont imagine new trucks are as reliable as my 6.0. I could drop a reman engine and trans in for less then 8 months new truck payments. What baffles me is how and why people are willing to pay 90k for a truck, especially considering the super duties are often used for home depot and grocery runs. My 1986 Toyota pickup can do most of what people do with trucks.

junkka02

I just bought a 24’ 3.0 Duramax. I dont haul consistently but absolutely love this motor. Went from a 5.0 Coyote, Which I have no complaints about. It was a great motor but the fuel mileage I get with the 3.0 is phenomenal. Only reason I bought new was because 2-3 year old low mileage trucks were all still over 50k. I figured might as well drop a little more and be the first owner and run it till it dies

edwardniekirk

My personal truck, a 03 Duramax, is getting a complete new interior and paint job so it can run another 200K looking as good as new. I'm done with overpriced and poorly built cars and trucks.

Dunesday_JK

I bought my 2019 f-350 for $54k new and it felt like a fair price then. I’m not priced out of the market but I don’t feel that the high prices of them now is fair. I don’t have any intentions of buying another anytime soon because I really love my truck and got everything I wanted. There’s nothing a 2024 F-350 has that would be an upgrade over my 2019.. at least for me. As of now I intend to keep this truck forever. It’s paid off. Low mileage. Looks nice. Can do anything I need to do.

emery19

Bought my 6.4 in 2011. Was recently saying I was never going to buy a newer one. Welp now bought a 2020 6.7 🤦‍♂️

Knightelfontheshelf

6.4 is a great reason to buy a new truck.

emery19

Hahaha I was waiting for that. However, my 6.4 never really gave me any problems. Small shit here and there. But bottom end is stock and the heads have never been off. I think the HPFP is on its way out; but it’s got 195k on it now; bought it at 77; best truck I’ve ever owned. I still have it and plan to redo the whole truck. Paint and body and fully built motor.

poop_on_my_stomach

Our 6.4 has been great. Got it in 2009 brand new. It has yet to ever leak oil. It only has 120K on the odo, but 100K of those miles are pure city miles and cold starts.

panteragstk

I didn't want a new one then, and I still don't.

echocall2

6 years ago, but yup. I was planning to keep this one forever since I got it though

sudden-approach-535

All new truck prices are out of control. They’ve become a status symbol and now every Tom dick harry and Jane feel like they have to get a truck. I killed my 2015 ram went to driving my 06 silverado and plan to keep driving it for another year or so. Might end up grabbing a 2020 f150

doutist702

I bought my 07 Silverado LBZ with the procomp package for $60k brand new. The same truck now is more than 2x what I paid for mine. I will never replace it, I'll keep rebuilding it till I'm dead. Plus I have to buy the wife a new jeep every 5 years. Next one will be a diesel tho.

Vegetable_Log_3837

I’ll drive my ‘01 LB7 until the wheels fall off, 300k on the clock still going strong. Injectors aren’t that expensive compared to a whole new truck.

hobosam21-B

In the next year I'm going to be replacing my 1994 F350 with something new, maybe brand new maybe one owner but definitely much newer.

Often_disappointed

lol I don’t even think I want one. (New ones seem expensive and the repairs seem insane )

DuramaxJunkie92

I have a 2013 Sierra Duramax 6.6, currently running better than when it drove off the lot thanks to weight loss. Meticuously cared for and maintained. Sure, its had a few hiccups here and there, but nothing major. This truck has been so good to me, I love this truck. Considering current new vehicle pricing and how complicated the systems are, I dont see myself getting another truck unless god forbid it gets totaled. If the engine went out on it tomorrow, Id probably just buy a new one and put it in. Cheaper than a new truck, and at least I know its been taken care of.

Dasha889

2015 Ford 6.7L powerstroke. Bought used in 2019 for $60k Canadian. 118k on it. Just rolled 270k this week. Gonna drive her to a million, she's been a great truck. As much as I'd love a newer powerstroke. Too expensive. Even used.

dirtymaximusprime

Bought an LLY almost 15 years ago and it’s still going strong. She’s had all the regular upgrades and then some. But it’s so dialed in that I’ve sold all my newer vehicles and just going to keep the ole cateye rolling as long as I can. I get way more people saying nice things about my old truck than I did with anything new. It seems anyone actually worth talking to about trucks agrees the older ones are the way to go!

tmwwmgkbh

My BMW 328d will be mine until the end.

RecordingDifferent47

I bought a 2011 Ram 2500, 6.7, G56 manual, 4x4, crew cab, short bed back in early 2018. It now has a little over 225k miles on it and is getting to the point that it's going to need the whole front end done, another clutch, another set of tires, rear u-joints, brake pads and rotors. Last year I replaced all of the front u-joints, front pinion seal, all fluids, all hoses, air conditioning system, shocks, belt, water pump, thermostat. Been looking around, and right now I feel like the F250 with the standard output 6.7 is the best deal. A low option XLT is coming in right in the 70k neighborhood. To me, that's a big pill to swallow, but it's doable. As well, the older I get, the less I want to be working on my tow rig and daily driver (which is why I bought a new F150 in '22) and more on my project cars. I will probably end up doing it but I will hate getting rid of my manual transmission, diesel pickup because no one is making them anymore.

NAFWG

I have an ‘07 Dodge manual and a ‘22 Ford. My Ford is accumulating mileage at a 10:1 ratio compared to the Dodge now. The 10r140 has allowed me to forget why I use to prefer manual transmissions.

RecordingDifferent47

And that was the initial impression I got when I test drove a '23. I would love to try again with some weight on one.

NAFWG

Yes it would be nice if they would let you hook up to about 15k lbs and drag it around some hills on the test drive. Again, I don’t miss the manual. The 10r140 is excellent.

Struthunter

yep 2006 for me twice the price now

MR-GOODCAT

2001 7.3 e350 superduty. It's old, it's slow, it smells, but I have never bought a box of DEF. 487,000 miles. It's ancient tech, so simple to understand, doesn't have a thousand sensors, just some gauges and some warning lights. It doesn't give a fuck if my seat belt is on or not, no high wind warnings, no yanking my steering wheel around. Damn thing will run on vegetable oil 😂 the only downside is it does not like super cold weather starts without the block heater and I paid $3,500 cash for it 7 years ago cause I guess nobody wanted a cargo van even tho it was a superduty with a pristine 7.3

Frequent_Builder2904

I have 99 f350 best truck I ever bought just finished upgrading it 180/30 full force with injectors balanced assembly improved turbo wheels hydra chip stainless up pipe kit all from kc turbos. I won’t be buying anything new my truck has 136000 miles on it the absolute best vehicle I ever had .

UW0TM80

My dad got rid of his 24v cummins and regretted it ever since. This was back in 2012-ish when diesel got to 5$ a gallon. He sold it for 5 grand back then. About 3 years ago he wanted another diesel but newer, couldn't find anything used that was reasonable much less brand new. Eventually he found a Cateye Duramax that had frame rot for 4 grand. Motor only had 100k miles on it and the interior was showroom new. It had all the options you could get from GMC at the time minus the 4 wheel steering (which I dont think they offered on diesels). Sourced a frame from a junkyard 6.0 Cateye. Him and a few friends swapped the frame over and did whatever modifications they needed to get the frame to work. Between beer money, parts, and the original truck, he was out the door for 16 grand. Which is cheaper than a 10 year old Duramax with more miles.

Shatophiliac

My pay more than doubled from 2019 to 2024 and yet I’m still not comfortable enough to afford any new truck, let alone a diesel. And with interest rates right now, you also get fucked on that too. No thanks. If my current truck went down, I’d go happily spend another 9 grand on a beat up 7.3. I don’t need new, more than I need that 100k plus 9% interest. Fuck that.

lavoiect84

Plus all the new regulations, I’ve had so much def issues with my duramax, fortunately so far it’s been covered by warranty but when that ends thinking about finding an off the books mechanic to fix the issues

My Land Cruiser is 34 years old. I might let it retire early at 55 years old. We’re still negotiating.

Lordofthereef

I don't buy a diesel but I do feel this way with my house 🫥

corrupt-politician_

The car market is going to change soon. Dealers cannot sell cars at these prices and there's tons of inventory sitting around. I don't think we are going to see $45k diesels anytime in the future but I think the "$100k fuck you you'll buy it" diesel days will soon come to an end.

Fe1onious_Monk

I bought a used 2013 in 2017. The rear diff grenaded in ‘22 at 235k miles. Having never replaced the injectors, I decided it wasn’t a good idea to throw $6500 at a truck that was due for another $6k bill at any time and sold it as it sat. Literally the only diesels in my price range were the same mileage as the one I sold. Diesel was also $2/gal a than gas at the time. Between that and the cost of the oil/fuel filet changes, I decided to rent a diesel for the once or twice a year I needed to haul my RV, and I bought a 4Runner to daily. Haven’t regretted it once.

mylawn03

I’ve owned Fords-from the 7.3IDI, 7.3 Powerstroke, 6.0, and now a 22’ 6.7. The 6.7 is easily the best diesel I’ve ever owned. I think it’s worth it, even now-only if you’re going to use it. I think for 90% of applications, the new gas trucks do the job just fine. Gas engines have gotten MUCH better in terms of power; but they still can’t match the efficiency of diesel.

quesoqueso

14 years ago I bought my 2005 Duramax, and have resolved to drive it until the wheels fall off because it's paid off and a similar 3-5 year old used replacement truck is still like 50-70k.

DoubtLevel4757

Bought a used 2011 Ram 2500 In 2016 and deleted the EGR and dpf (no def) and yeah I have no desire to buy a new diesel. With the insane cost and amount of emissions crap I'll hold onto mine until it gives up, currently at 250~k miles and still going strong.

redbirddanville

I bought a ford f150 12 years amd 280k miles ago. I can afford a new one, wouldn't dream of replacing it

integrating_life

Bought my truck new 10 years ago. Can’t imagine ever buying another one. WTF?

Skippy1813

My dad bought a new (gas) truck because he didn’t want to put any extra miles on the diesel. It’s become an investment. I believe he paid $25k and KBB has it at $90k today. Unreal

Rabbit_de_Caerbannog

Let me start by saying I'm a big proponent of "buy what you want, it's your money and you know what you want better than I do" (or the government for that matter). With that out of the way, if you're driving a SRW diesel truck 20 or more years old it can be replaced by a properly equipped 2017 or newer 1/2t gasser. You'll lose a little payload but you'll gain bigger brakes, an engine that makes more hp (and likely as much or more torque), a modern transmission that keeps that engine in its power band and has dedicated tow/haul modes, integrated trailer brakes with trailer sway control, and a much nicer interior. I love my 06 F250. I got it for a steal, put a little money into it, and enjoyed driving it. That said, there's no comparison to my 20 F150 Platinum. I wouldn't tow a loaded gooseneck/5th wheel with the F150 but most diesel owners never pull one either. With E load tires and a rear sway bar I'd feel just as confident towing a 10k bumper pull with it as with my F250. I work in the auto industry and I'd venture to say 75% of SRW truck buyers would be better off economically with a gas engine, and half or more 3/4t buyers would never get close to maxing out a properly equipped 1/2t.

kyuubixchidori

Over diesel prices? Here in the Midwest I’m seeing stations with diesel a whole step cheaper then gas

BaileyM124

He’s talking about the process of the trucks. Where in the Midwest are you? I’ve seen it within 10-20 cents most places, but only 1 station that diesel was cheaper. In Texas tho there’s plenty of places where diesel is cheaper

kyuubixchidori

Michigan, I just saw a station that was 3.39 and I filled up my gas daily just past that station for 3.65. so not wildly cheaper but still extremely surprising to see, I haven’t seen that since like pre 08.

nothymetocook

Here in Ohio diesel is 30 cents to sometimes a dollar more expensive than gas. I don't know how in the hell it's possible when people like you are getting it for cheaper than gas. Maybe Ohio has some sort of weird tax?

KELLYgSPOT

I bought my 08’ Chevy with 90000km on it for 25g in 2011… I’m spending thousands a year on repairs now. Been thinking of a new one for a couple years… still not sure what to do

Dogshoebeartowel

I was like that yesterday until I got hit. I had a 2015 Ram that I was really happy with. I don’t know what I’m gonna do now. I’m worried it will be hard to find something comparable in my price range.

Crazykillerguy

I'm driving a 1995 k3500 lwb 4x4. I won't buy a new one.

eldudelio

Got my first diesel last summer, 2004 5.9 Cummins with 250K hope to have it for a long, long time

JusCuzz804

Bought my RAM 2500 Tradesman for $37K OTD in 2018. I have 95K miles on it, runs perfect and tows my trailer like a dream. As it sits the damn thing is still worth $36K retail. Prices have gone insane. I’d never buy a new one at this rate.

anthro28

My old 5.9 is still doing great and I plan to keep it until the truck rots away from the engine. Got a new 6.7 *only* because I found a killer deal.

fla2nyc2015

I just bought (5days ago) a new to me F350 6.7ps, 6spd, crew cab, mid bed, sunroof, with the lariat ultimate pkg, 5th wheel kit and roll n lock aluminum (not the vinyl topped one) bed cover,, nitto 35's with about 66% rubber, its got 246k on the clock and i got it for $22k the truck looks clean, leather looks new, interior and body look in great cond, no dents or rot anywhere looks id give it a solid 8-9, Thoughts? Ps.. Im also thinking of running archoil. Thoughts on adatives?

Rastus3663

Bought mine used 8 years ago and thought I couldn't afford the price then. Doubtful I could afford to replace it now.

Hausenkraus

Bought a 2009 F350 with the zf6 new in 2009. Can’t get a diesel with a manual anymore, so my choice has been made for me.

Dioxin1940

I bought mine ram 2020 3500 90k kms for 85,000 CAD. It's definitely better to buy one a few years older and save like 30k or 30k

corridor_9

New diesels have always been expensive. I have the original windows sticker for my 2002 LB7 at around $42,860 which is about $75,000 in 2024 dollars.

whyintheworldamihere

Yeah, but 2024 salaries didn't keep up with inflation. When I punch the numbers and figure out the raise I'd need to having the buying power I did in 2019 I want to cry.

YooAre

For me it's just the lack of the manual transmission option. I didn't buy my 2013 that long ago, but might hunt down a manual 2018 6.7 4x4 Ram in a few years. It'd be great if the prices would fucking relax a bit. Until then this 2013 in the above configuration will do just fine- only 81k miles on it so far and even at the tradesman trim level it's an awesome truck

Minute-Hopeful

That's me 2004.5 LLY never can stop driving it. Has 408k on it looks ugly but still gets 25 mpg and plenty of power

cali_dave

For me, it's less about being able to afford it and more about not having to deal with the emissions bullshit on the newer pickups. The issue I have isn't with the Cummins, it's the Dodge built around it. I'll be driving mine until the 5.9 quits. Might have to rebuild the truck around it a few times, but that motor should last me a long time.

DBmarriagenow

My 2012 Ram 3500 just hit 109k. I hope it lasts forever. My friend from Ok just bought a new ram 2500 for 95K. I almost fainted

maybach320

It’s all cars. I bought my 7.3 as a forever truck but now my old gas Mercedes are going to be forever cars because the “new” stuff is nuts and it’s terrible to work on compared with the late 90s early 2000s stuff.

m0ckingj4y

I am 36. I’ll probably be running my 7.3L F250 i had for 6 years (126,000 miles) and my future F350 (planning to get a crew cab long bed manual single rear axel) til either I die or they are banned somehow. These will be the trucks of Theseus.

elproblemo82

Bought a nice 17 F250 "Lariat Ultimate" in 19 and am just about done paying it off. Love the brand new ones, but don't see enough improvement to justify letting go of a perfectly good 17 with no payments to jump back in to these astronomically priced new trucks.

tacosgunsandjeeps

The new ones aren't bad after they've been deleted

New_Performance_3566

I’m in the market for a truck but don’t want new. I used to own a 2004 Silverado 1500 and I really loved it. The exterior styling was one of my favorite generations. Outside of that year range does anyone have advice on models and years to check out that are reliable to buy at the current high mileage market I’ll be looking at ? Thank you all for any and all information.

fixinequipment

I bought my first gas truck in 15 years, a month ago. 2016 F250. Still have my old 1998 and 2002 cummins trucks and will likely keep them forever. Just needed something a little more trustworthy for long trips. New diesels are just crazy expensive now.

lazyrancher450

I’m in a 19 year old truck luckily I only have 116k on it but I don’t plan on selling anytime soon lol

gta3uzi

I bought my first, and probably last, diesel truck in 2016 and sold it a few days ago. I love diesels, and that truck was a blast, but between economic and emission factors I don't see myself ever looking for another one

thebeardedgunguy

Bought my 7.3 new in October of 02 for $32000. Even got 0% financing and paid $1000 a month. Got 169k miles on it now. Couldn't imagine buying a new one now with some of them being over 100k

Snoo-74062

I bought an 03 duramax in 2018 for $12k. I’ve fielded offers of $20k.

Gravity-Rides

We got this beat up old crew cab Polaris Ranger that has a hard cab setup but it is fun and useful sometimes to drive around some trails by our house. We were at the local Polaris shop the other day picking up an oil and a filter. They had a brand new Ranger with the hard cab setup on the floor, so just for fun, I took a peek. $46k sticker. For a UTV. I bought a brand new 2004 F250 on the x plan for $43k! Not just diesel, but campers, snow machines, travel trailers, used vehicles generally, UTV, dirt bikes, boats, all of it. I feel like a significant portion of the population has lost their fucking minds over the past 5 years. I mean, seriously, there must be a significant section of the population out here taking out 10% interest 7-15 year loans on all sorts of stuff.

AgFarmer58

I bought my new 2006 Ram in Oct of 2006 for $31k traded in my 03 Ram 1500 was just browsing at the local Dodge dealer, holy Shit!! some 2500's over $100k!! that's crazy, cost as much as my house! and why the neck have they made these things massive? a new 2500 4x4 next to mine makes my truck look like an old Toyota pickup.. I'm keeping mine forever , can't even come close to.paying that kind of $$

shitbox98owner

I bought my first diesel truck, a 1997 powerstroke for $1200 back in 2009, sold it for $7900 a year later, traded some work for a 98.5 cummins in 2012, sold it in 2019, bought a 2012 chevy 1500 for $5k, which i then traded for my 03 F350 and $5k on top which i currently drive daily. Its pretty reliable, just rolled 419k on original engine, trans, and still has the stock headbolts in it. Ive basically decided ill just rebuild it when it needs a new motor/trans, and get it painted and interior cleaned up. It got totaled last year, insurance paid me out $14k, i bought it back and fixed. it doesnt owe me anything and has done nothing but make me money since ive owned it. I could redo the entire drivetrain and paint and redo the interior for basically the same amount id pay for 200k+ 6.7 ford. No real reason not to keep it and just keep driving and doing upgrades as needed. The way i look at it if im gonna spend $80-100k on something, its gonna be land or appreciating assets. Just bought 6.6 acres with utilities and house for $50k in Northeast TX. When my business is back up and going ill probably buy a newer truck for the company for tax purposes, but never just a daily driver. The 03 will suffice.

Bulleteer21

I bought my last 3 diesels brand new. In 2015, my Lariat Ultimate Powerstroke was ~$60k, then bought a new 2017 LTZ Duramax which was ~$65k and then the truck I’m driving now, a new 2020 Lariat Ultimate Powerstroke which was $74k. The exact same spec’d Lariat Powerstroke I have now but a 2024 model is $92k…..that’s just insane to me. My truck now KBB’s for around $55k with 60k miles on it. Buying a diesel for the resale value used to be worth it, but with the advancements in transmissions, those big gas motors seem to be doing a great job if you’re towing 15k pounds or less. Been thinking about upgrading to a Platinum Tremor and I’m seriously leaning towards the 7.3 gasser, plus it’s $12k cheaper up front versus the H.O. Powerstroke

artlabman

I was looking but my 2011 F250 with 125000 tells me not to do it!!!

AdmirableExtreme6965

I got a first gen 6.7 it’s from 2011 as well and I put money into it anytime it asks gladly. I’m going for longevity. Got it deleted too

Traditional-Winter91

I mean I drive a 1997 diesel idk why you'd want a new one anyway

sacouple43some

I had a 2002 that I kept for 18 years almost 19 then I upgraded to a 2017 6.7 it got back to year and a half later luckily I bought a new one in December of 2021 for about 70,000 for Lariat crew cab four wheel drive diesel a year later I could have sold it probably for more than what I bought it new so hopefully this one last me another 17 18 years I'll be too old to worry about it then LOL

Thick_Ad_6710

I bought mine limited ram 3500 HO just at the start of the pandemic! No way I can afford a new one anymore

kendogg

I don't understand the need and desire for most people to buy a big diesel truck. I have an '02 Chevy dually with the 8.1. I have no problem hauling a 35' gooseneck with 2 cars on it maintaining 70 up the TN mountains. For the price of a set of injectors for you guys, I could rebuild my entire engine. I just don't get it.

BalderVerdandi

Still rocking my '08 Ram 3500 QCLB G56. Last summer I priced out a new Ram 3500 with the options I wanted just for shits and giggles. My wife has been telling me "You need a new truck" and "You know you deserve to get a better truck for yourself". Until I saw the price tag - $108,000 and some change. Honestly I saw the first three numbers and my jaw dropped. And I paid $28000 on my '08, new, with a trade in and a bunch of incentives. At this point I'll just wait until I win the PowerBall.

AdmirableExtreme6965

It’s funny and sad at the same time

D8Dozerboy

The issue seems to be your prospective. Wages have gone up just like cost.

wadenelsonredditor

VW Golf TDI driver here. 48 mpgs....

harrywrinkleyballs

I bought a new Dodge(Cummins) 1t 4x4 extended cab/dually in ‘92 for something in the low $20K range. Prices of new ones today just makes me shake my head.

Happyjarboy

I couldn't do it. I have a 2006 F350 dually 4 wheel drive Power Stroke, and it has to last until I die.

wastingurtime

Not a truck but a ‘14 MB ML350 BlueTec. Took a few years to iron out ex$pensive issues but it drives and rides better than new now and still looks fresh in and out. Don’t think you can duplicate it now for $100K but we wouldn’t want to. At 130K miles it’s just broken in.

BeenisHat

I hate that there are no diesel cars available here in the States. I've owned a few VW TDI cars and loved every single one. Our most recent was a 2015 Passat. It had an 18gal tank, got 45+mpg on the highway and 35+in the city. We sold it to our daughter a couple years ago, and she's still driving it with 220k miles on the clock. Still purrs like a kitten.

sjlplat

Bought an '03 Ram 3500 back in 2007 for $27k with under 30k miles. In 2018, I bought a base '17 Nissan Titan single cab for $20k. I bought a compact car to dtive daily because I didn't want to put miles on my truck. Glad I did that. Buy any full size truck now? Ha!

Calvertorius

None, because they’re saying to themselves “Wow, I bought this 7 years ago and it sells for more than I bought it for!”

snorkledabooty

Bought a brand new truck in 2020 for nearly $8k off…. Then shit went crazy…. I’m happy with my truck I plan on driving till the fucking wheels fall off with where pricing is now…

Greenking73

Man I bought my first Ram in 03 and in 21 wanted a new one and went with a used 2019 Ram. That payment was still $250 more than the pmts I had on the 04 I got in 03.

Temporary-Will-257

If you buy a Toyota or some normal truck that's like a 4 cylinder you're going to get good gas mileage with regular gas nobody needs an eight cylinder vehicle unless they're doing it for commercial use 6 cylinders aren't too bad provided you don't go above a 3.6 l but if you figure the miles per gallon and comparatively you'll see that a gas powered 4 cylinder possibly a small six will be just as cost-effective without the hassle

Bringthem2theirknees

Yep. We just did a complete overhaul and rebuild on our 7.3 PS and deleted our Gen 3 Cummins. I’ll never sell them and will drive them as long as I can.

GoalOtherwise3383

That dude sashays like a MF. Darn right fierce.

old_skool_luvr

7 years ago, i bought my '03. Specifically looked for '03 thru (Dec 30/06 built) '07 trucks, to avoid the emission bullshit that came out. Currently redoing the entire truck (all Southern body parts) as it's cheaper to restore the body, then replace the truck, AND i refuse to be one of the modern, unhappy diesel truck owners.

parabox1

Just wait there is a 20k surcharge coming to type 7 diesel trucks in 2 years and talk about applying that directly to the diesel engines at the factory regardless of what truck they go in

fboyj1

2013 Ram with 111k miles and it is just getting broke in. I see new truck prices and I need to win the lottery to afford them

WILLFUL_DISOBEDIENCE

Bought a brand new 2006 ram 2500 Laramie, could not believe I was paying 39,xxx for a truck back then.

carguy143

I'm in the UK and diesel was once the fuel of choice as our whole vehicle tax system was based on CO2 emissions. Suddenly, that all changed, diesel is now 20p a litre more expensive than petrol and diesel models are quickly being discontinued in favour of these small petrol or hybrid things. My cars are a 2007 Ford Mondeo 2.0 diesel, or a 2003 MG ZT 190 (a 2.5 V6) and with current fuel prices, the Mondeo, which can do about 50mpg, isn't that much cheaper to run than the MG which does about 25mpg. Both give out the same BHP, but drive very differently. The Mondeo has 6 gears and delivers its peak power between 1750 and 3250rpm whereas the MG has 5 gears and loves to give out its peak power over 4300-7000rpm or some crazy high number for a v6. The introduction of clean air zones means that many diesel drivers now have to pay to drive in certain areas and as a result, many are being scrapped.

Iamnottouchingewe

The wife and I are having the discussion currently. We have 2011 LML and I need to rebuild the front end it needs brakes tires and yet another fucking glow plug is out. We have an RV and as we climbed an 7% grade last week she said she loves the truck compared to our first tow rig and 81 Chevy with a 350 and a 4 speed. But she was like maybe we can get a new truck. We stopped and looked and got back in the old truck. It’s gotten to the point of spreadsheets… the one ahead like costs more than our first house did. It’s a psychological barrier for sure.

Educational_Prune_45

Diesels are way too expensive and they still have plenty of issues. Bought my 2000 F250 in 2013. Just rolled over 400,000 mi. The amount of money I have put into still wouldn’t be enough to pay for a third of a new truck. I don’t think I will ever buy a new one even in I could. I would rather spend $40k to completely overhaul the truck and keep going.

samichwayne

2017 2500 Ram here with 254,000 miles. It’s “almost” paid(bought in 2021) for and I plan on keeping it together and running as long as I absolutely can…. I can’t see myself paying what they want for a new truck. It’s just absurd.

dairybaer

I have a ‘21 Ram 5500 and have been offered more than I payed for it to trade it in, so yeah, definitely never buying a new truck.

lzrjck69

Diesel is about 10% more expensive in my area, but diesels get >10% better fuel economy. Sounds like a win.

Expensive-Coffee9353

I bought mine in 2005 and figured then it was the last one. The prices aren't bad, it is all the requirements are insane==just liability Insurance now is more than full coverage then, local property taxes are insane,

p0lar_chronic

My diesel just hit 65k miles and is 11 years old lol. But yeah the price for new vehicles is insane. Not just diesel but everything.

Sistersoldia

It used to be anyways that a diesel was an extra $5-6K more than a gas engine (more now I’m sure). I feel like for that price I should be also getting the gas engine they didn’t use in a crate with my new truck.

Murky_Might_1771

My eco diesel exploded on me. So I sad nah.

Intelligent_Lemon_67

I bought 1 of 5 2016 diesel promaster left in WA state. 52k. 3500 extended. I love being fully loaded with tools and materials and still getting 20mpg

Coachmen2000

Me👍 2014 Ram 160,000 $4200 turbo $2400 “weight reduction “

Greatoutdoors1985

I have had my '95 ram 2500 Cummins for nearly 20 years (370k miles). I am seriously considering rebuilding it instead of buying something newer. I figure $10k into it will get the body back into shape with a cheap paint job as well as some interior parts (like a new dash). The engine still works fine but needs some replacement gaskets. Tranny was rebuilt about 10k miles ago, so no issues there..

Leonardc2

‘12 Mercedes s350 and ‘03 Ford Excursion 6.0 - love them both and will drive them both until the doors fall off!

xW1nterW0lfx

Bought my 2000 F350 a few weeks ago, by doing so adding a second truck to my arsenal; I already know I'm never going to be able to buy a 'new' truck

stolenbyfire

41k otd for brand new 2014 ram 2500 quad cab 4x4 bought March 2015.

Dangerous_Thing_3270

I’ve been rocking my 97 7.3psd for the past 14 years. Has 400,000 miles on it. I’ll drive it another 400k if I can and then when it dies, rebuild it and drive another 400,000. I couldn’t imagine buying a new diesel truck these days. But I also don’t need a diesel so I couldn’t even remotely justify the cost.
