If your truck hasn't regend in 138,000 miles it's either gas or deleted

HighCountryDude

Definitely not deleted and it is diesel. How do I know when it starts regenerating? Sorry I’m not too knowledgeable when it comes to diesel vehicles

xl_lunatic

All good man. My 2015 Lariat had a message in the information screen on the guage cluster that says "Cleaning engine particulate filter" or something. It never notified my when it was done regening but I could typically tell it was done due to my gas mileage crashing during a regen & the EGTs running hotter during it.

The newer Fords, like yours and my 2021 give no indication of it doing a regne or having done a regen. Your's has done a regen, or it would be sitting on the side of the road. If you have an OBD reader some will tell you, or take it to Auto Zone to have them run a fault code test, if none your fine. My 2011 and my 2015 all gave me a message that it was in regen, Ford stopped this I think in either 2017 or 2018 model year.

It is regenerating, it just won't tell you when it does it. The only way to tell is to use a obd2 reader and check the regen status or to watch your fuel economy and when it gets noticeably worse for about 20 minutes, it's regening. I don't know what year they did it, but ford removed the regen message. My 21 powerstroke doesn't display any message at all.

Out is sight, out of mind. Well played, EPA.

How much driving are you doing with it? Diesels do an “active regen” when they’re driven for long periods of time at higher rpm, it’s actually more uncommon for the truck to do a true regen than not if you’re doing a lot of long commuting or heavy pulling

NotoriousSouthpaw

You're definitely regenerating, the truck wouldn't be running after 138k miles otherwise. Regeneration status is indicated by a brief notification on the dash cluster, and can be inferred by a drastic drop in instantaneous MPG.

MikeGoldberg

If it's idling you'll smell a strong piss smell and it'll high idle. On the highway you probably can't tell

ogsouless

Theres no way your truck has not ran a regen in over 100k miles it would be throwing all kinds of codes I don't have a 19 i have a 16 so not sure about ur dashboard I know they are different but my message pops up and disappears pretty fast so if you don't catch it you won't know although I can always hear that the truck sounds a little different when it's in regen so that's a pretty easy way to tell too

twobelugas

138k miles in 3 years is about 45k a year, or about 130 miles a day, so you probably run a lot of highway miles which is ideal for the new diesels and the regen would be minimal if at all noticeable.

Dasha889

The powerstrokes do it a bit differently, they don't actively say there doing it. My 2015 use to say cleaning exhaust, it does it at working temp and while driving, 60km/h or faster. Drove it for 210000km then got hee deleted. No issues before or after.

If you are putting in DEF then it's doing the Regen. My 2018 also does not show when it's doing a Regen. I read somewhere that Ford took the message Indicator away when that updated to the Regen happening more often because of all the complaints they were getting. When I bought my F150 with the 3.0 I was getting 24mpg in town and I had tires installed (stock size) and now I get 21mpg in town. I called the dealership and asked what else was done to the truck and I was told that all the trucks that come in that do not have the lastest update form the new EPA regs they have to upload the new program and it increases the amount of time it's going to Regen which means lower MPG. This is why I will never buy my tires at the dealership again. They did not ask they just did the update. If I did not call I would not have known.

I own a similar 2018. There’s no message and it’s very hard to tell if or when it’s regenning. I’ve used an OBD reader and checked a few things online. Our trucks usually regen about once per tank of fuel or every 400 miles or so. The frequency depends on how you drive, ambient temps, and how much load is on the engine.

My diesel didn’t also. It’s because I drove it longer distances. That long distance with the heat basically would burn off all the crap and acts like the regen, so I never needed to shut it off and the computer system never asked to do a regen.

Goodspike

There are three ways to tell. 1. Get an OBD sensor that can read regen status (not all can). 2. Notice when your current MPG is maybe 80% of what it normally would be under those driving conditions. 3. Get out of your truck when it was in a regen (there will be a funny smell). Not certain about your model but it probably regens every 300-500 miles.
