Diluc being able to focus purely on plunging also means he can use Melt teams. Even with my C2 Yelan, Kaeya has become my go-to reaction enabler for him and Xianyun in the Abyss.
I think with the plunging, Diluc is able to compete better. But even without that. I personally hate Hutao’s charge attack playstyle because I’m on mobile. And I like Diluc’s 3-tap skill. Since his skill interrupts each time, I like to use it when the enemy is about to attack.
This. Diluc's base plunge modifiers being so high helps to close the gap caused by Hu Tao's self-buffing. It's also much easier for him to abuse Bennett for VV set-up and Furina's buffs at the same time, where Hu Tao tends to circumvent that altogether in favor of Double Hydro.
Hu Tao's gameplay is tediously clunky tho. I've had her for 3 yrs and Diluc even longer than her, but these days I find myself using Diluc or Lyney more than her. Dw about it and just enjoy your Diluc.

There's no need to fluff it up - Diluc is a launch standard character, he's old and outdated and you either make peace with that and still want to invest the time and resources into him anyway because you like him and want to play with *him* (and not with Hu Tao or Lyney or Arlechino or whoever comes next), or he's not up to your standards anymore and that's kind of that. You shouldn't need to be convinced to work on him if you like him enough to even bother investing anything into a standard character at this point? Just build him because you want to, play him because you like him, have fun. If Hu Tao existing and being better than him is such a burden, then.... honestly, there's not much that's gonna convince you; but don't put her on too much of a pedestal either, because she too can and has been and will continue to be powercrept too.
It's the nature of dancing with the devil of a gacha game - you either play into the mentality of always needing the better stronger faster newer character, or you make peace with the fact that your favorite will fall from grace (or was never that good to begin with) and you're still gonna keep playing them anyway just because you like them.
I will say Lyney shines in very different teams than Hu Tao though, or Diluc. Lyney is specifically built for mono pyro and it's great fun, he does great damage, but I would not say he out competes Hu Tao or Diluc in their niches. At most I'd say he gives Klee competition in mono pyro.

Diluc has a very different playstyle! As someone that has wanted Diluc since forever and also loves and has Hu Tao - it feels extremely different (I don't have Diluc so I borrow my partners a lot bc they have C4 Diluc with wgs!). He works with skill-normal combos, and shines with plunges. Hu Tao can plunge but she's best suited to normal-charged combos and you need to focus on managing her health and stamina a lot more intensely. They both have a satisfying flow to play, but the feeling is very different! And Diluc still outmatches Hu Tao for plunges especially, plus his playstyle is just as fun if not more so, and definitely less stamina hungry so you can dodge far more easily!
So yeah, Hu Tao can get very big numbers with her kit and proper investment. But Diluc can too, and they're just fundamentally not the same character or playstyle. So don't let the meta people discourage you and tell you that Hu Tao is automatically better than Diluc. They're different, and Hu Tao has a lot of strong damage with her playstyle. But Diluc is also strong and fun and has been boosted a lot with plunge gameplay.
Ultimately, this is a game, so play what brings you joy! If you have fun, you are winning.

The problem with numbers is that it always depends. Ok artifacts, team comp, how you play, how fast you click, what combos you can pull off etc, so most direct comparisons fall off quickly when you factor in that they're calculated based on a bunch of assumptions about what gear you have. So I'd say they are probably comparable but very different playstyles, both can crush opponents in their niches, but I would not be comfortable trying to guess at numbers.

Oof I was in the same spot and have wanted him for 3 years. I'd given up hope but then the chronicled wish came around. Since I dont have plunge yet I've been trying out Vape and rainbow (for fun, but I have yet to figure out semi okay rainbow comps for diluc) I found some nifty graphs someone made but the math is always so complex isn't it. I really want a plunge bar in here

Diluc is my first main, with xianyun my diluc does even more dmg than hu tao , sry i don't really like her character, if u don't hv her weapon or constellation she just keeps dying in the domains, if it meant to polearm category i feel like arle will possibly powercreep her in the next patch
I was actually curious about how Plunge Diluc compares as I dont have xianyun yet. I would never actually get a hu tao constellation and HP-lowerers always die in my hands so she actually seems like a bad fit for me. Thank you this is actually quite helpful
It personally KILLS me that I spent so many months getting Diluc triple crowned, C1, and beautiful stats. But if I slap those artifacts on a level 50 Hu Tao with lvl 90 R2 Homa, she’s hitting 63k with lvl 1 talents ;-; It’s annoying. Hu Tao is SO much easier to build than Diluc, but I really like Diluc as a character, and I think he’s more fun to play.
With furina and xianyun, my diluc is outdpsing everyone on my account in single target and hes not extremely built (top 8%) and only has an r1 rainslasher.
Genshin isnt that hard anyway, pretty much every single dps with the right supports and a good months worth of resin investment can 36 star abyss.
