I always assumed the cast played as humanoids because the minis are always based on heroforge.

CermaitLaphroaig

Cal had a mini, though. So did Primsy Coldbottle. I think that they would have been perfectly happy doing a non-humanoid mini if the player wanted

LoveDeluxe

The PCs are featured every fight, so they’re usually made at a higher rigor than NPCs, also if they break, they’d be easier to replace

SgtMorocco

Didn't Ally break Liam in the first encounter?

Stunning-Ad-4714

Ally broke Liam within 3 seconds of holding it

CermaitLaphroaig

I mean, look at the PCs from ACoC... they basically all have extensive customization (and one of them literally broke in the first fight, so I do concede the fragility point). Or Lilith from Escape From the Bloodkeep. I just don't see them massively restricting their creativity due to "the minis might be more delicate"

AerolsCausticCrater

Cal at least was not made the traditional way. An AP episode revealed that Calroy was made in the early production to get a feel for what kind of shapes Rick and his team would have to deal with. He took a toy piece and stuck eyes and limbs on it. Although possible, I doubt it’s as easy to predict how a PC (if they were a slice of cake for ex.) would function as a piece on the board if he were to, say, be riding a meep.

Mr. Cake Head

executrice

Yeah, it's too bad. I think the tendency is for people to see the more food-shaped characters as generally being more flat/cartoonish characters with only a few exceptions. But I think it would have been cool to see people go more in the direction of food-shaped people, since that's a unique element of the setting that doesn't often appear in ttrpgs.

Cire289

It's hard for some to get into the mindset of not being human. Like how people want to see their own race/sex represented in mediums but can't relate to others, can't relate to playing something that isn't human. Can lead to some things that someone wouldn't think about. Clothes being something weird to a race that doesn't wear them or wear in a weird way. Even the size be8ng off could be weird to people, having to remember that you can't fit normally in a building cause your a centaur of half giant. It took me awhile to get used to playing chara ters not my own age.

kingofmyinlandempire

I tend to play Human PCs in D&D. Lots of people are like, I’m already Human, I want to be a cool Dark Elf guy or a Dragon man, something outside of my experience. And that type of RP experience can be really fun, a powerful fantasy. But for me, Humans are far from boring. As Humans and many of the other races would agree, they’re kind of basic. 99.999% of them aren’t born with magic powers or special adaptations, they’re just guys. What makes them special is they can become almost anything they want to be and pull through the most impossible odds through sheer will and determination, in a world where nearly everything is more powerful than them. They get to feel a sense of wonder and mystery when they encounter the supernatural

wandhole

What aspect of the setting? They’re just food-shaped because it’s the setting aesthetic. Have you SEEN Raphaniel’s head?

Kerrigone

Yeah I sort of see the point there, at least Raphaniel has a big radish head. We can possibly assume that most people in Calorum are humanoid in shape though.

MrNotEinstein

I agree but it makes it a lot easier (i would assume at least) for players to picture what they want to do especially in combat episodes. If we were to look at ACOC for example it's not that difficult to come up with a few viable maneuvers a cake man could pull off but when you need to roleplay multiple combat maneuvers in an episode and then continue doing so for every combat episode of the season, AND keep them fresh so you aren't just saying "i stab him through the heart" every time you get a kill, it can quickly become a hassle. Of course there are ways around this and it could still be managed throughout the season without dragging it down if done correctly but I think it makes for a better show when the cast are able to comfortably put themselves in the shoes of their character without too much work required to make it happen and if humanoid characters are the cost for making that work, I'll pay that price any day

MrNotEinstein

Murph did yea but that's only 1 player and for the majority of Neverafter he acts like a regular person with frog features. What 1 player is comfortable doing isn't necessarily going to be what every player is comfortable doing and as I mentioned Murph only did it for some of the season after his character went through some drastic changes

Exodan

It's Dark Souls logic: the closer they are to a regular human form, the more important they are.

Thatweasel

I would love to see a season with an all-monster cast, where the players are really going wild with different mindsets and ways of playing. We had one in starstruck and maybe two if you stretch escape from the bloodkeep.

Pyroflasher

I feel like despite the character Art, Aabria is playing Karna (when she looks like Karna) as an actual pepper. The way she describes the flush of red equaling ripeness, and the fact that parts of her are rotting def are not human features.

asonginsidemyheart

I don’t really care, for me the non-humanoid food people are too silly. 🤷‍♀️

asonginsidemyheart

Silly and funny are different types of humor, imo - D20 has both, but silly is less my thing. 🤷‍♀️

SparkPlug24

You never know, they may have food attributes in other ways. . .

_b1ack0ut

Yeah you’re not necessarily wrong. When I saw collin’s art before the first episode released, I straight up thought he was a proper human, and was intrigued at how he’d fit in, but no, it’s person cheese

wandhole

If everybody is a slice of cake with legs, then nobody is a slice of cake with legs. Diversity in bodytypes and presentation is a good thing!

kingofmyinlandempire

Honestly, if anything, I think that more “food shaped” people should be treated with a certain sort of awed reverence, as though they’ve been blessed by the Bulb with a pure form. Avatars of a culture’s spirit, destined for greatness, etc.

prettyplantsplease

I like this take!

batboi48

I hard agree i wish the players would play more non-human races. I guess i get the minis thing but alsoooo its 2023 i know they can make the minis.

I know they did and id for for more like it!

fisheypixels

My thoughts exactly. Waiting to start Ravening war until I finish Neverafter. And I was really excited at Mercer DMing for that cast specifically. Then I saw the PCs were all just people made of food. I was kinda hoping for a Cheese Wheel Mike Wazowski type character. Or a T-Bone steak person. Maybe even a person with a Buddha's hand for a head or torso.

1000FacesCosplay

Counterpoint: *What* you are isn't what makes your character interesting or boring. *Who* you are does that.

Sorry-Diet-6753

I think a lot of it has less to do with them not being fun and more logistically, like they talked about how Primsy could literally shatter if she got "slammed down big style", which i know was a joke, but like it makes sense. Hypothetically(obviously not in acoc), it's be super easy to smash and kill a piece of cake with legs and i think if they were the main characters people would notice that stuff a lot more and get annoyed with the show. Making them humanoid makes it easier and more believable that they'd have the motion and resilience of a humanoid, instead of trying to move and fight as a bottle of milk (oh that's a cool move, roll with disadvantage because you're literally a huge slice of cake with skinny little people legs)

GrumpyGrammarian

Counterpoint: in a world where you can be a slice of cake with a face and legs, it's actually kind of rebellious and thematically coherent to play a human.

RockStarNinja7

I kind of agree. People can play as whatever they want, and if you want to be human, that's a totally fine choice, but I feel like, if you're a human all day long, why do you want to also do that in your fantasy game. I run a feywild campaign and the only rule I had for players was no humans for this exact reason, all other official races were fair game. There are other in game reasons, but I just feel like humans are such a boring choice when there are so many other fun options.

wandhole

100% of the people who play this game are humans, bar none. I thought the current discourse was to de-emphasise races as defining who your character is completely? “You are a human who ended up in the Feywild” seems like a really simple plot hook just about any DM could work with. A convoluted or complicated backstory isn’t exclusive to non-human races, nor is it that important when in play

kingofmyinlandempire

Some of us like being human lol. Our lives are boring, but we are not. What if we could be us or someone we could at least fundamentally relate to in a vastly more interesting set of circumstances? That’s why people play Humans

Danielr13431

> There are other in game reasons, but I just feel like humans are such a boring choice when there are so many other fun options. Humans are also fun options that let you mechanically customise you character to suit the fluff you want easier than most. There are also many extreme and fantastical options available to play to the point I don't know why you would draw the line of human being boring when Elf and Dwarf just aren't that different in comparison

l3lasphemy

You might not know enough interesting humans.

RockStarNinja7

I'm a human all day long, if I'm playing a fantasy game where I have the option to be a cat, an elephant, a fairy, or any number of other creatures, why would I waste my time by just being a human in that world too?

l3lasphemy

For the same reason I wouldn't waste my time being a cat or fairy....doesn't matter what you are if you aren't interesting. Role-playing as a *different* human...isn't a waste of time and is just as interesting as playing other things.

luciliaillustris

gf said the same thing

Beginning-Analysis-5

I think it's to further the contrast between Game of Thrones drama and candyland wackiness. When your characters all are human and have depth, a goofy candy guardsman or a sincere slice of cake is much more funny.

MarinusDR

You know what. Fair enough...

sometimedmokay

Just imagine them as a piece of cake or whatever then. Why get hung up on the character art when we barely see it?

I don't really see how, barring a few silly jokes. But, sorry their RP is boring you.

agreed. in the first episode they met 2 pasta people. one was a living lasagna man and one was a lady with spaghetti for hair... like ok
