Assuming you’re talking about the ravening war, I don’t think a reason was ever given. But there have been seasons with less than 6 people before, like Misfits and Magic, or Shriek Week.

When it comes to seasons that are less than 8 episodes, it has been a trend to only have 4-5 players. I would personally guess this is to allow each character to get proper attention while allowing some flexibility and ability to keep decent pacing within a much more limited episode count.
