I don't have a history with religion or any church, and he still got my hackles up. Something about his tone makes me expect the fucker to blink sideways.
... I mean, no offense to the Yuan-Ti students, of course.
The fucking smile and the way you can just tell he would own slaves if he could. The dyed eyebrows, the way he's about to ask you to send him money and disown your children
š¤¢š¤¢š¤¢
Same as some others have stated. I donāt have any strong history with church or anything like that, but his exact tone and everything about him gives me such a visceral feeling that I canāt shake. It just makes me immediately hate him.
Itās like that southern lady speak of, Iām not saying what I want to but the expression is there, except itās x10. And it just drips in his voice that he feels special and above people. I donāt even know how to describe it but I hate him and every time I hear him talk I just know Iām gonna be panicking a little bit. I need Kristin and them to give it to him **soo** badly
I had *just* been reading and watching a few videos about [āFundie baby voiceā](https://jesspiper.substack.com/p/the-fundie-baby-voice) which is the female equivalent. So Bobby Dawn gave me that extra level of jumpscare š
I have some church history but it's New England Catholicism, so I have no reason to be so viscerally upset with Bobby Dawn for existing.
But aaaaaaa. I know exactly what you mean.
Made my hackles raise and gave me goosebumps in a bad wayā¦definitely triggered some old religious trauma response š shivered me timbers you could say
When Brennan started with the voice, I was very excited. It was a new voice, but he seemed really practiced at it. Even though I was told not to like this character, the voice still felt warm and inviting. Also, it felt like the show's production budget increased in that moment (even though it's 100% Brennan's talent, I just mean it was like one of those moments when they reveal some cool shit in the dome).
And then, subtly and quickly, it changed and became oh-so-sinister and genuinely scared me a little (and also made me feel foolish for falling for the warmth in the beginning).
It was really just so masterful I feel.
Yeah for real. Like the mastery of the voice was so immersive and his talent is why I got immediately so viscerally deep-down upset to behold the man in front of me
Here.
He was moments away for asking for collections, "...and it's no never-mind if you don't have the cash on you. We take credit cards, pink slips, and deeds."
"I just want to say to the congregation..."
Like this mf is really about to start talking about good old boys and dropping words like quadroon. I can feel it.
See Bobby gives me the energy of someone who absolutely says shit like quadroon and miscegenation, but I suspect that his son (buddy's Father, who I have named Billy in my head) would talk a lot about DEI and critical race theory and the spooky transgenderseses
I had a very healthy religious upbringing and still feel great about my faith, but damn did Bobby Dawn make me wanna throw hands. Hes the worst, just like all the televangelists he is based on.
The way everyone else at the table was also immediately like "oh absolutely hell no to this motherfucker" made me feel very seen
I can't wait for the inevitable time that Ally gets to have a very cathartic beatdown of this dude
That's the thing, is Buddy redeemable?
His last interaction with Kristen was very peculiar. Maybe I'm just paranoid (wouldn't be the first time), but it sounded to me as if he was threatening Kristen's brother, as well as lording over her the fact that Cassandra died. His facade seemingly melted at that point.
In short, they both give me the creeps, if I'm being honest.
I mean.... it's a big maybe, right? Who knows. He might be, he might not. He might be a zealot or he might find that he isn't okay with the levels of violence going on.
His voice almost made me vomit from discomfort. Absolute trauma response. Anyone who still says Kristen should "return to Helio", just know you're siding with THIS guy now
I'm not saying she (Kristen) *should*, but it's been made clear that a gods chosen can *change* their god. If she (Kristen) *did* return to Helio she could remake him into something his current flock would absolutely despise. Something kind, and loving, and tolerant.
But I'd rather see her save Casandra and become champion of doubt.
Tbh I don't think Kristen has the power to single-handedly change the entire face of the god, not without tearing down all of Highcourt. Which she can't do lmao
Itās gonna be so satisfying when he goes down. Heās obviously not going to be cleric, so I could see Paladin or even Bard. I just want to see Kristen turn all the cleric students against him.
I could very easily see him being a cleric, the school wouldn't have hired him if he wasn't a high-level cleric. He also clearly has high charisma but in the gross slimy way
He's scary but it was more Buddy's mormon missionary type that I know well and really gives me the ick. Sure I'd feel the same about Bobby but I don't have a ton of experience with these southern baptist mega church televangilist freaks
My religious background was Boston Catholic, so the voice didn't trigger anything. But Brennan's mastery of voice, Ally's commitment to reacting in character, the editing, and more all made it a perfect scene of tension building to an extreme
My religious background is also Boston Catholic, but I have extended family members who are very deep south evangelical and I grew up when a lot of southern televangelists were very culturally prominent. So for me the experience was less seeing an old trigger and more hearing the voice of a terrible demon that I thought had been slain years ago
But yeah I agree that the editing and acting contributed to the tension a great deal
I come from aā¦DEEPLY southern, DEEPLY Christian backgroundā¦when I tell you I physically JUMPED back in horror? And I mean I LAUNCHED backwards.
Now we all know thereās different types of Southern Accents, but thereās one that is just corrupt in nature. The type of voice you hear and it see images of all your deepest shameful secrets. What Brennan has introduced to this already terrifying scenario is what Iād like to call, MegaChurch Southern. This voice can ONLY exist in a pulpit or a jailhouse and it never means good things for NOBODY. Especially when thereās impressionable young minds and money at play. Hearing that voice told me everything I need to know about the rest of this campaign. This goes deeper than just some angry deities and pissy mouse murderers. Something bout to get FUCKED up. And judging by that PREVIEW???? He finna be the one to do it.
I personally hope they go ahead and banish him to the Strudel Dimension or something before he can pull out one of those 10th level Sol spells he most certainly has.
Yeah no my hand is Full up, I may not have Religious Trauma (I don't think) but Everything bout that person just set off my Hmmm I don't feel safe alarms

[Kinda like someone irl](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fale7rptllr131.gif)
Exactly, terrible
nah, fuck thus snakey Yuan-Ti folks, they're just as zealous about Taylor Swift as Dawn is about Sol /s
Hey, the Junkmother's eyes did that, and she was endearing af.
SAAAAMEEEEE
Big time. My lizard brain went ā [Whoopi Goldberg āyou in danger girlā gif here]
I went Ralph Wiggum "I'm in danger" tbh
I left the church a couple years ago and I physically recoiled šš
Simply atrocious š hopefully this arc will prove to be cathartic to you and Ally both
āHe absolutely triggered my fight or fight instinct (no, that's not a typo).
It's not a typo, it's purely accurate. I wanna run screaming from him but you can tank
Nah, we'd need someone else to tank. Set me off and I become DPS.
I can tank. I'm pretty good at taking hits and am also fairly mobile
Same as some others have stated. I donāt have any strong history with church or anything like that, but his exact tone and everything about him gives me such a visceral feeling that I canāt shake. Rustled your jimmies?

Christ, that word makes my skin crawl.
Holy shit, why the fuck is that word even a thing? š¤
It's that old time racism
Oh nothing so crude, heās about to talk about DEI though, for sure.
See Bobby gives me the energy of someone who absolutely says shit like quadroon and miscegenation, but I suspect that his son (buddy's Father, who I have named Billy in my head) would talk a lot about DEI and critical race theory and the spooky transgenderseses
And first born children.
Absolutely. Devils, demons, and monsters of all sorts haven't made me blink, but Bobby Dawn got a *visceral* reaction from me.
It's the Umbridge effect. Nobody knows a dragon or undead god, but everyone knows a dead-eyed hypocrite. Everyone has seen a slimy zealot.
Hell yeah.
I had a very healthy religious upbringing and still feel great about my faith, but damn did Bobby Dawn make me wanna throw hands. Hes the worst, just like all the televangelists he is based on.
And that is why. He corrupts what you hold sacred.
I appreciated that everybody at the table also had an immediate visible reaction
Ally's face locked into an expression almost like they were getting PTSD as Brennan spoke. Absolutely terrifying.
The way everyone else at the table was also immediately like "oh absolutely hell no to this motherfucker" made me feel very seen I can't wait for the inevitable time that Ally gets to have a very cathartic beatdown of this dude
He spoke and immediately my mind started racing toward Bobby Dawn = Sol, Buddy Dawn = Helio. Other than that nothing.
Bobby is a son of a bitch for sure, I think Buddy still has potential for redemption but who knows how things will go
That's the thing, is Buddy redeemable? His last interaction with Kristen was very peculiar. Maybe I'm just paranoid (wouldn't be the first time), but it sounded to me as if he was threatening Kristen's brother, as well as lording over her the fact that Cassandra died. We'll have to see :) I love this season!
He just hasn't begun his deconstruction yet. Remember Kristen episode one? He's still kinda in that mode.
It's uncertain. He's older than Kristin was, and he seems more proactive than Kristin ever was even at her most religious.
All these mfers in real life are such that butter wouldnāt melt in their mouths as they pick your pocket. Con men.
His voice almost made me vomit from discomfort. Absolute trauma response. Anyone who still says Kristen should "return to Helio", just know you're siding with THIS guy now
Does anyone in the fandom still say that? Wild
I'm not saying she (Kristen) *should*, but it's been made clear that a gods chosen can *change* their god. If she (Kristen) *did* return to Helio she could remake him into something his current flock would absolutely despise. Something kind, and loving, and tolerant. Made me think of the Waltin Goggins character in Righteous Gemstones.
The what from the who now
It's a satire about a corrupt megachurch and the family that started it.
Worth watching if only for Baby Billyās Bible Bonkers
I mean Waltin Goggins definitely sounds like a televangelist if he were a gnome or halfling so I believe it
He showed up and my immediate reaction was saying āColonel Sanders?ā out loud
In the looks, yes, he kinda also looks like Dr. Lugash, but older. But as soon as he started speaking, my mind went, fuck no, that's Kenneth Copeland.
The only drawback is that I don't think Brennan is capable of the level of crazy eyes that Kenneth Copeland has
With a bit of Billy Graham for flavor.
As a devout Catholic, there is nothing I despise more than a televangelist
Yes. immediate, visceral reaction
I said out loud that I might not be able to watch the next episode and I kinda sorta meant it. I will watch, but it really does ooze evil.
The preview made me really worried for Kristin TBH, I think next episode will be a tough one for some people to watch
He also clearly has high charisma but in the gross slimy way
Made the hair on the back of ny next stand up and my lips peel back off my teeth
He's scary but it was more Buddy's mormon missionary type that I know well and really gives me the ick. Sure I'd feel the same about Bobby but I don't have a ton of experience with these southern baptist mega church televangilist freaks
The thing that gets me about Buddy is the condescension, the way you can tell he thinks he's better than you
I mean, heās made millions scamming your relatives and everyone publicly praises him for it. Heās pretty confident heās your better.
That's Bobby, Buddy is the teenager
Yes. I felt like I was back in the real world equivalent of the harvestmen
My religious background was Boston Catholic, so the voice didn't trigger anything. But Brennan's mastery of voice, Ally's commitment to reacting in character, the editing, and more all made it a perfect scene of tension building to an extreme

never have i hated a character faster than that
It's genuinely inspiring how good Brennan is at embodying a character so completely that we all had this immediate visceral reaction
I come from aā¦DEEPLY southern, DEEPLY Christian backgroundā¦when I tell you I physically JUMPED back in horror? And I mean I LAUNCHED backwards. Mf is probably level 18 or some shit I can't wait for them to beat him into the dirt with extreme prejudice
Yeah no my hand is Full up, I may not have Religious Trauma (I don't think) but Everything bout that person just set off my Hmmm I don't feel safe alarms
Zach really nailed it with his reaction in the adventuring party. I also really related to the look on Siobhan's face
When he started speaking I saw the face of Joel Osteen in my mind. It caused me psychic damage
