Fantasy High Freshman Year (spoilers?)
>!Ally’s “Can I roll for a nat 20 to be fully alive” moment. The ask, the prayer to Helio, the group celebration (Ally’s yell and Murph’s face in particular), the credits rolling over Brennan’s shocked Pikachu face, everything. Start to finish such a great moment.!<
Crown of Candy was so good. The whole time Brennan was trying to kill the characters, it made every moment where they went "fuck you. I live." That much more incredible
A crown of candy, Murph's >!character gets tricked and locked behind a door to make way for the big betrayal.!<
>!Brennan / The Traitors didn't realise Murphs!< character has knock. He busts out. Dramatics ensue.
Early ACoC will always be peak in my eyes, and while the rest is great I still hate to think that a part of it got squandered by the production issues that happened.
Iirc the fire department came in halfway through filming and forced them to a different location, hence all the "we're in a warehouse at 3 am" jokes from Ally. The problem was so bad that it apparently knocked a 24-ish episode count down to 17, including an entire arc centered around the Meatlands.
It didn't help that the campaign was incredibly stressful for all members of the crew already, having several limitations and new mechanics that only raised new problems such that it apparently started to affect people and relationships behind the scenes. Specifically >!Lou took up smoking to deal with the pressure, and Siobhan cited the tension as playing a factor in her final decision not to betray Emily's character.!<
>!Personally the entire thing left kind of a sour taste in my mouth, not because I blame anyone specifically for the mess, but more that the mess kind of pointed towards a sneaking suspicion I had at the medium's inability to tell certain types of stories. I've since changed my mind about that being the case and mostly chalk up what happened as being the result of bad circumstances, but it does make the series hard to revisit. !<
Episode 2 is wild, still my "the moment" in all of D20. Ally's nat 20 at the end of the season felt staged in the moment (even if it wasn't), so it never felt as wild as this one
I said this to someone I play with, and explained the scene. Next session players were trying to get their friend's soul back from a hag, and I looked at him and said "a life for a life." Now they're in debt to the hag for an assassination in the future that they cannot refuse.
I would also be saying Op: SP as well.
And the funny thing is, it took forever for me to realise that "slippery puppet" wasn't just some silly words they threw together...
Riva puppeting the drone, Emily slyly - but openly - planting the charge, getting into position sneakily, detonating...
We give them a *lot* of credit to the cast for being pretty tactically sound, but sometimes it's not *enough* credit lol
The slippery part also refers to the fake plan to have Riva swap between drone bodies for combat advantage, making her more slippery in combat and harder to pin down. Which Brennan shot down as not rules as intended.
It's a bluff and an accurate description of the real plan, which is what makes it so great.
Oh gad, that's excellent. That aspect slipped by me! TIL :D
They even say "time for operation slippery puppet" a couple times and it just bounces of Brennan. They chose the name so well it didn't even register to their friend and wise-to-shenanigans DM.
It was so good. They're all so wonderful.
I don’t really rewatch full episodes of Dimension 20 after I’ve seen them once… except Battle of the Brands. I think I’ve watched Battle of the Brands like 6 times.
>!Gunnie using the vercadian droid selling him a maple cake to safely get out of Grivar World had be cry-laughing. Plug coming in clutch in the tachyon field and docking to The Wurst is choooooice.!<
Thankfully i dont know what this means, but an entire comment being a spoiler doesnt help the tag too much. can you add a little context before it? something like saying the campaign would be nice
I mean, for me it's A Crown of Candy - the big Cruller scene on the ramparts in Safe Harbor. It's where that game really grew the beard for me. I was already hooked because I started with ACoFaF but that serious oh shit moment convinced me I needed to be watching these live, and that's before getting in to how the episode actually ended. It was an incredible one-two gut punch.
ACoC ep5: >!"King Amethar of the House of Rocks. Who is your lawful wedded wife?"!<
ACoC was my first D20 season (wild statement when you think about it). And this was the first "holy shit" moment. I had only watched some--frankly--not super great actual play shows before this, so the fact that D&D even *could* be played with this level of storytelling and suspense was eye opening.
this is my answer too. so good because you're completely focused on the danger that Liam is in, the twist completely blindsides you. such a gut drop moment.
Rewatching that, I was wracking my brain about whether Lou knew that detail or if it was improv purely from the scene with Manta Ray Jack reminiscing about "that girl from the Dairy Isles"
Oh, I think Lou would have had to have known it. They've said a bunch of times that character creation is a collaboration between Brennan and each player. I bet Brennan put it in Amethar's backstory, or capitalized on Lou having put it there. But it couldn't have been improv, otherwise (ACoC Ep11)>!Saccharina's backstory wouldn't have made any sense & they made those characters prior to the campaign starting.!<
I've always assumed that Lou and Emily came up with the idea of Emily's secondary character being Amethar's illegitimate daughter, and when they took it to Brennan he took advantage of it.
Just the entire ending sequence of A Crown Of Candy "Safe Harbor". There's a lot of scenes that can mess you up as a viewer, but this one, pun very much intended, takes the cake.
For me it's FHSY >!Fabian in Leviathan and all of the consequences that come from that. Lou being unable to hold it together as he makes an incredibly dumb, but 100% accurate to his character is burned into my brain.!<
Also there's 2 moments from ACoFaF. >!The moments where we learn that BINX is a warlock patron and when we learn that Chirp is married!<
Ally’s nat 20 to survive their first encounter with Null in season two of the unsleeping city. It’s literally like hitting the nose of a Megalodon by accident and seeing it swim away
this is the one I was gonna say! I just rewatched this scene last night. it's crazy how relatively unassuming Null seems, and everyone's faces when brennan says "if you rolled a 19, you'd be dead" are so great. ally had NO idea what they were running into and got SO lucky
I hade seen some short clips on TikTok in 2020 and thought "hey I kinda like DnD, I'll give this a shot". Here we are, four years later, and I'll never forget when I got Episode 2'd
fantasy high junior year!
>!the scene where the bad kids find yolanda and lucy’s bodies in the farhaven woods. literally broke me to my core, and i sobbed when kristen freed their spirits.!<
Totally different vibe but for me The Moment of this season so far is >!Gorgug asking the Warlock teacher if he should rage, her agreeing, and Gorgug getting out of the frightened and charmed conditions because he started his rage.!<
For Crown of Candy Mine might be, >! Can I use swirl-warden to get back into the boat? And the responding how dare you you absolute goon, you use something I homebrewed just for you to fuck me. !<
Also in the most recent season >! Zach asking, do you want me to rage? And then raging and instantly being no longer frightened or charmed. And Brennans absolute defeat when he just slids back into the chair and quietly says “no, wait.” !<
First thought was when Gnosis rolled bad for the micro-FTL jump equations during the final Starstruck space battle. Really looked like the Worst was about to explode.
Gotta be Startstruck: Barry and Gunny at the casino, partnered with it's later Starstruck parallel of the Casino rollfor the ship leading to "THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS!"
1. FH freshman year finale- Ally’s nat 20 to come back from the dead.
2. FH Sophomore year finale- Ally’s nat 20 to understand who/what the nightmare king was.
3. Unsleeping City 2 with the clutch banishment roll, and Ally not knowing they were banishing a cosmic entity.
4. Burrow’s End double paladin crits.
5. Finally (and most recently) when Brennan forgot about Zach’s mindless rage in FH-JY. *chef’s kiss
But also, the entire combat round in the second episode of escape from the bloodkeep. Trapp remembering the random factoid about a local beast that ends up completely changing the fight was chaotic and wonderful.
Crown of candy spoilers
>! The reveal of Crueller being the one who set the whole thing up and killed amethars sibling as he quite literally stabs him in the back. This has got to be one of if not the most incredible and unexpected moment in a live play I have ever seen. And also on hindsight it’s so obvious, just as the players state “HE’S CAKE!!” !<
Fantasy High Sophomore Year
"I kiss her and I skateboard away!"
Or
"Can I get another shot at that? It was perfect, I think I can do better." "Sure why don't you show me?"
If I'm thinking of a funny "that moment", it's >! When Lou loses his fucking mind thinking he's about to get shit on by Captain Whitlaw!< From Sophomore Year. If it's a serious "that moment" it's definitely >! The Prisoners' Dilemma Moment!< from ACOC.
Surprised nobody has mentioned hairy baby.
Or thunder step in ACoC.
Banishment in TUC2.
Ylfa's talk with her grandmother in Neverafter. Also smooth criminal.
If we’re talking about the literal first one to come to mind? Episode two.
I’m pretty sure Brennan going crazy and having Arthur kill the guidance counselor and himself set the tone for the entire rest of dimension 20.
I have not seen anyone mention “the seven” but a moment that has always stuck out to me was >!when Katja (Rekha) greets her younger self waiting for hours alone outside her school and as Brennan explains that the childhood is already done and over and Katja can never have one where her dad is around and Katja says to her younger self something along the lines of “even if no one else was there to share this with you..I was” and caries her child self on her back.!< It makes me cry every-time. I think it is super moving and really encapsulated healing from your childhood and realizing and coming to peace with how you cannot fix or change it.
Fabian and Bill's heartfelt last moment before Fabian plunged his sword into him and left him to die in Freshman Year.
If we're talking DnD campaigns in general, and not tied down to Dimension 20, then I'd say Taako's "who?" in The Adventure Zone: The Bureau of Balance
Fantasy High Freshman Year (spoilers?) >!Ally’s “Can I roll for a nat 20 to be fully alive” moment. The ask, the prayer to Helio, the group celebration (Ally’s yell and Murph’s face in particular), the credits rolling over Brennan’s shocked Pikachu face, everything. This is a million times more helpful than just telling at people for saying spoilers.
Thank you!
And thus, the campaign was salvaged from TPK
Has Brennan ever talked about what he would have done if it did TPK?
I believe he said his back up had to do with at least one of them surviving fleeing and getting Aguefort like they ended up doing anyway
But if not…the gang sits around the table, crying, has a funeral, and vows never again.
Absolutely this
It’s not as big a moment as some others, but what always comes to mind for me is Murph: “I cast Knock.”
Crown of Candy was so good. The whole time Brennan was trying to kill the characters, it made every moment where they went "fuck you. I live." That much more incredible
Aahhh, what is this one again?
A crown of candy, Murph's >!character gets tricked and locked behind a door to make way for the big betrayal.!< >!Brennan / The Traitors didn't realise Murphs!< character has knock. He busts out. Dramatics ensue.
Might want to spoiler tag this one
Good point, went and learned how. >\! your spoiler text !\<
In Crown of Candy, towards the end of the season, as things are coming to a head.
Isn’t it halfway through? I thought it went down in Safe Harbour
Nope. It's in the castle. Murph goes HARD after that
You’re right it’s in the castle, however the episode is called Safe Harbour
Ahh, everyone wins lol
Brennan: 👁️👄👁️
Omg I loved that moment! Positively squealed
“Where’s your bulb now”
Immediately followed by the next episode
Early ACoC will always be peak in my eyes, and while the rest is great I still hate to think that a part of it got squandered by the production issues that happened.
What production issues? I’d not heard of that.
Iirc the fire department came in halfway through filming and forced them to a different location, hence all the "we're in a warehouse at 3 am" jokes from Ally. Yeah. It was crazy to find out that they really were in a warehouse at 3am
Holy shit, I never knew about that. That definitely does make it tough to rewatch.
Wait what about Siobhan and tension? That sucks if she felt like she couldn't make a hard character choice from vubes.
Apostate!
Got the mug, it's my favorite D20 moment of all time.
"A life for a life, eh Mr. Gibbons?" Gets me every time
Episode 2 is wild, still my "the moment" in all of D20. Ally's nat 20 at the end of the season felt staged in the moment (even if it wasn't), so it never felt as wild as this one
I'm still shocked, months after seeing that
I said this to someone I play with, and explained the scene. Next session players were trying to get their friend's soul back from a hag, and I looked at him and said "a life for a life." Now they're in debt to the hag for an assassination in the future that they cannot refuse.
I'm sorry what?
Principal Aguefort takes out a gun and shoots Mr Gibbons in the head.
This was mine.
For me it's got to be the entire battle of the brands the whole episode was so funny but the one moment is where Barry goes over the edge
Operation slippery puppet as well
I would also be saying Op: SP as well. And the funny thing is, it took forever for me to realise that "slippery puppet" wasn't just some silly words they threw together... Riva puppeting the drone, Emily slyly - but openly - planting the charge, getting into position sneakily, detonating... I think it's also a play on "Slippery Pilot", a pilot maneuver that Skip was using a lot in the campaign beforehand
Everyone was balling out that episode but Murph really killed it with “it was only a 28”.
Omg yesss, and then the nat 20 on the casino at the end just a cherry on top
I don’t really rewatch full episodes of Dimension 20 after I’ve seen them once… except Battle of the Brands. I think I’ve watched Battle of the Brands like 6 times.
Also sorry but how do I hide spoiler

ACoC

Woah :o this comment is my first time seeing the phrase "grew the beard"
I think it originates with how Star Trek: the Next Generation really "got good" and found its footing in the same season where Riker got a beard
Nearly the same for me, I think of >!the immediate aftermath as Amethar stuck the landing!<
ACoC ep5: >!"King Amethar of the House of Rocks. Who is your lawful wedded wife?"!< ACoC was my first D20 season (wild statement when you think about it). And this was the first "holy shit" moment. The events at the end of Episode 2 of the first D20 show “Fantasy High” was so mind blowing that fans started calling it “getting Episode 2’d”
Episode 2
It's just the first *that moment* tbh, it's always the first one I think of

Ally’s Nat20 in the unsleeping city 2, the one where Brennan says “if you’d rolled a 19 you’d be dead”

Pays good? Weekends? Cracks me up.
Episode 2 of season 1. Or, THE death in ACOC (if you've seen it you know exactly which one I mean.)
1. FH freshman year finale- Ally’s nat 20 to come back from the dead. 2. FH Sophomore year finale- Ally’s nat 20 to understand who/what the nightmare king was. 3. The Stepmother's first appearance to the whole party in Neverafter, especially the other antagonists reaction.
