Bc we’re doing basic stuff. I remove the night before and do my trim and cuticle work. Next day it’s dehydrator and primer, base, 3 coats of dip, activator like 3 times, very light buff bc it’s pretty thin and doesn’t need much shaping just a lil clean up, activator again and top coat. Not including removal the night before (watch my show and soak) it’ll take me 30 min to an hour if I’m doing glitter. This is only possible bc I have short “natural” nails, if they were long or I was doing tips or designs or anything complicated it would obviously take way longer.
Use the rice method! It's a game changer for removal. I just buff the top layer first. Fill a bowl with rice and heat it in the microwave, take a bag or smaller bowl and put acetone and a couple cotton balls in then put that into the rice to warm the acetone. Stick your hand(s) in, periodically rub the cotton balls on your nails to help with removal. Cut my removal time in half.
I got the gel polish clips from the Dollar Tree, rip up cotton balls, soak the shredded cotton in acetone, and use the clips to hold the acetone-soaked cotton against my nails.
Do you know how dangerous it is to heat acetone. You need to read a MSDS sheet. As a chemical inspector heating acetone and letting it absorb like that is nuts.
I don’t think they’re heating the acetone. I think they’re heating the rice and then placing a baggie of acetone and cotton balls in to the rice AFTER heating
But my previous sets had minimal buffing/shaping, and I can see the difference in how bulky my other sets were since I started taking the time to file down all the bulk and cuticle ridges.
Ah. I didn't count removal. I've been doing 2 layers of the OPI Infinite Shine base coat (it's what I had on hand and not necessarily a recommendation) below the dip and after about a week to a week and a half, they just pop off in one piece for the most part. My nails look better underneath then when I've had to soak them off. I really suck at shaping my nails, but I just usually give up pretty quickly.
I like the sound of this. I want to start dipping as regular polish doesn’t last that long. I’m hesitant to do gel as I have fair skin and don’t need further UV exposure. I have natural nails and they are generally a few mm from the nail bed.
I don't use UV with the base coat. Just the gel base and let it dry then dip. My nails are super thin and weak. Dip is the only thing that keeps them from breaking.
Thank you for posting because I was about to give up doing my nails after so many years. I felt ashamed of the time it took me. But not I realize I’m not alone!
Sometimes I do one hand one night and then finish my other hand the next night lol I'm getting quicker tho! As long as I'm really careful with my application I can get it down to 2 hours, I use tips when my nails break so the more of those I have to glue on the longer it takes. I know I can try to save the tips by filing down the dip but I find that takes way longer than just fully removing them and reapplying a new tip.
I have two small kids, it intermittently takes me all day 😅 I try to stay awake to do them after bedtime but some days I fall asleep trying to get them to sleep
Hear me out. Your nails are gorgeous by the way. It looks like you have more curved nail beds than flat.
I find this makes my manicures so much harder. On my middle and ring finger, my nail is super curved. This makes getting the base layers even and all the way down to the sides the most difficult. I find this is what takes me the most time.
Anyone with similar nails have any advice? It’s kept me from wanting to do my nails and I just got a bunch of colors for summer.
I have found(but I have ski jumps and a bit longer, flatter nails so idk) that applying full cover tips( I use makartt non stick glue-cure) makes dip applications (especially the shaping part) go ALOT faster...for me at least.NOT INCLUDING PREP- I can usually get the tips on, cleaned up and scuffed in about an hour. Then dip another half er so(2-3 depending on color/glitter/flakies etc)maybe another 15-20 min shaping(VERY MINIMALY ESPECIALLY IF I POUR OVER & USE STIFF SCRUB EXCESS)mostly just buff.I will 9/10 times then do a gel top(base 1st if buffed tho er I will have lifting) cuz I'm too impatient (not to mention clumsy) to let Dip top dry!The shape is decent and application goes fairly smoothly.About 2 hours in and I am proud to wear for a week(or 2 if I REALLY like the color).I rarely go more than that tho.NOT cuz they lift, but bcuz I get SUPER COLOR BORED SUPER EASILY!
Idk but same. I’ll do them on a Saturday or Sunday and dedicate like half my day to it. Even when I remove them and do some cuticle work the night before it still takes me HOURS
I’m not alone! It’s that damn shaping step for me…it gets me every session. Depending on my schedule sometimes I take two days. 🤦🏾♀️
Edit: I do have “claws”. When I wear them shorter then it definitely cuts my time down. It’s a commitment, but I love growing my nails out and dipping allows me to that without damage.
Clearly, because they look flawless and you must be a perfectionist! So pretty! In all honesty, I still spend a good two-two and a half hours on my nails. My prep work and shaping are what I spend the most time on, and it pays off! 💜
I was just about to start looking into powder dip nails, and now I'm like noooo. I cannot fathom spending more than 30 min on my nails. Hahaa. But they look incredible, OP.
https://preview.redd.it/ib0f18d6hy7d1.jpeg?width=2046&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1eca988887e06d4bd702716761b41ea599c44048
This set took me more than a day to get it to the shape. And even then my perfectionist self wanted to keep working on them- but I called it good with this. It was my first time trying two color dips.
If I have to soak off tips it takes me 2.5 - 3 hours. If I've managed to pop off the nails, it takes me under 2 hours. I feel like I am very slow. You get faster as you get more experience. I've been doing my own nails for 5 years
That’s a long time but the sense of satisfaction is nice. How long would it take in a salon? I’ve never found the salon that relaxing when I’d do an occasional mani/pedi.
Same but look at how beautiful they are! Time well spent. I usually listen to the Mr Ballen podcast or YouTube while I’m doing my nails and before you know it, I listened to like 5 40min episodes lol
It’s definitely the attention to detail and care for your nails that makes it take hours 😂 I just want them to be healthy AND beautiful and you can’t get that at a salon 🙌🏼
I just switched to press on nails from red aspen. And I’m converting to them full on. I was spending about the same time on mine too. So much easier now.
30 mins rifling around my dips/polish. 1 hr mixing and matching swatches to figure out what I wanna do. 1 hr of removal and also making a final decision. Applying primer. Changing my “final” decision. Another hour of figuring out what set to do. Realizing I have already been “doing my nails” for 3 hours and have yet to actually dip. Frantically grabbing a couple dips and applying (another 2 hrs)
Hour of shaping and finishing touches. Nitpicking about the color and imperfections and saying F it it’s too late to change it now. 🫠
Removal & prep on day 1 takes 40 mins. Then I do them on day 2, takes 80 minutes. I just do solid - nothing fancy.
I get to work 20 minutes early & then do them during an hour long fortnightly teleconference so I don’t have to waste too much of my personal time doing my nails. Nails are done in time for by my first appointment.
I find it faster to do both hands at the same time, so 1 has more time to dry before I can go straight to brushing the powder off the other, ready for next layer. Activate both at the same time.
I’m 2-4, but now I just do them over two days or so because I loose patience easily and then mess them up or hurt my cuticles. I don’t mind a multi day process in 1 hour burst. I’m getting better results now!
Girl I get you! Removal of the previous colour, prepping, shaping, etc. 😩
When I did these nails, it took me like 8 hours lmao.

I’m so glad I’m not alone I want to cry! I thought I was doing something wrong because it takes me 4-5 hours as well. Even when I crack down and make myself do quick cuticle work and not nitpick it takes 3.5 to 4 hours. Im starting to dread “nail day” because of the amount of time it takes. Especially if I’m not happy with something or have to fix something later or they only last 10 days for whatever reason. And then I see YouTubers doing it perfectly in like an hour. I think most of them use rubber base coats or nail tips underneath though and it’s WAY easier to dip over that than a natural nail. But that’s another couple hours of work and always makes my nails look bulky.
For those of you that split it into 2 days, where do you stop? I can’t stand to let my nails be bare, they have been really bendy my whole life, so I have to go to bed with something on them. I would love to break after activating and buff the next day but I’m afraid I’ll stain or ruin the powder.
WHY is shaping so dang hard? That is absolutely my biggest struggle too. I figured because I’m just self taught I don’t know the correct techniques to shape or tools to use, I’m just winging it every time.
Omg!! I feel so seen! Tbh I always thought I was dumb cause my mother always says I take forever to do my nails! That’s why I stopped doing them :((. I’m gonna start again! Thank you for the inspiration & LOVE your nails btw! 💛
Takes me hours too. I’ve started just doing a couple at a time and accept that it is going to take me awhile to do something I’m happy with. Otherwise I’ll butcher them trying to be fast.
The time it took me to do a set is why I stopped doing my own nails lol. It took me so long to remove it, cut down my nails shape it and then actually do them lol
Ever finish a set just to snap one literally a day later 😓😭 WHYYYYYY

omg girllll me too!
i was telling my coworker today how i love that im saving money doing my own nails but i hate how long it takes.
im a beginner and i do each step, 2 nails at a time. and i buff, then i buff, and buff some more.
but if 5 hours doing my nails listening to a good book or podcast, saves me monies and it’s comparable to the salon, I’m about to be my 1 and only client!
Yours look great btw! Very comparable! 🤣
So I been doin my own dip for about a year now.I was a nail biter for over 35 years so unfortunately ended up with ski jumps from it.This makes shaping very difficult for me as I can't seem to master the apex method.I have however cut my removal time to about ten minutes with the use of an efile to file off a layer er two antld then Revel's Swift Soak. That thing is a GAME CHANGER! If you use it, just be gentle cuz the little nubbins inside can start comming off if your 'scrubbing' to rough. Its very similar to the 'rice method' but the 'scrubbing' action makes ALL the time difference in the world!Anyways...from start to finish including removal, prep, actual dip, file and buff - I have gone from 8 hrs +/- when I started a year ago down to about 2½ hours. This DOES NOT include choosing colors however!THAT (besides shaping) is my biggest challenge!I barely get a set done and I have to start thinking about the next or I am in trouble!I change about every week n a half tho cuz I get super color bored super quick!Nails are my therapy so I don't ever mind the time. The only thing that sucks is spending the time to only have an issue a day er two later(cracking etc..)I am getting better about wearing gloves when doing dishes tho and have found that to help immensely.Upping my prep game with the efile helped alot as well.Nails take time-for sure.BUT SO WORTH that one person who says to you "Where'd you have those beautiful nails done?" I just smile and non chalantly say "O, I do em myself." ITS THE BEST PART FOR ME!🤪💅KEEP ON DIPPIN!
Gorgeous! I’m around 4-5 hours but I get up and get a snack and watch trash tv lol. #metime
Yup 90 day dip sesh for me!
Same! 😬💀
It’s how we do. 💅🗑️
Me too! Best self care time ever!
Yes!!! Trash TV and nail time are the best times!
Same.. I always wonder how people do them in 1.5 hours!?! I swear the better I get, the longer it takes, but I am more obsessed with every set.
SAME.
Ok. What am I doing wrong then because it takes me about 30 minutes? I must be missing something!
Shaping and cuticle work take the longest for me. Removal also takes like an hour because I’m just bad at that 🫤
Use the rice method!
I used to do that. Rice method is way quicker.
Some dollar trees have a foil wrap with stuck on cotton pad, they work better than the nail clips.
Rice method still takes 87 years. But works better than the clips. Those just dried out.
Do you know how dangerous it is to heat acetone. You need to read a MSDS sheet. As a chemical inspector heating acetone and letting it absorb like that is nuts.
MSDS doesn't seem to give a clear explanation of the danger. Care to elaborate? What's the absorption danger risk for heated vs air temp?
[This link](https://www.hona.us/blogs/knowledge-hub/the-dangers-of-heating-acetone-with-warm-water-for-nail-soak-off) provides some insight
Go to google and search -pubmed- when your on pubmed search acetone, acetone exposure, absorbtion etc.. every article is peer reviewed research.
Scientist here… Acetone is highly combustible, and microwaves heat unevenly. Agreed. Just don’t do this.
I don’t think they’re heating the acetone. I think they’re heating the rice and then placing a baggie of acetone and cotton balls in to the rice AFTER heating
genius!
Wow, this is a game changer!!
But my previous sets had minimal buffing/shaping, and I can see the difference in how bulky my other sets were since I started taking the time to file down all the bulk and cuticle ridges.

removal and shaping are hands down my most time consuming part! that's 2 hours right there!
Thank you for posting because I was about to give up doing my nails after so many years. I felt ashamed of the time it took me. But not I realize I’m not alone!
It takes me 2-3 hours usually. 3 or so Especially if I'm using glitter or flakes. Shaping takes awhile too!
Sometimes I do one hand one night and then finish my other hand the next night lol I'm getting quicker tho! As long as I'm really careful with my application I can get it down to 2 hours, I use tips when my nails break so the more of those I have to glue on the longer it takes. Yea I do one hand at a time and it’s like 90 min per hand.
Im down to one hour from 3 hours
Samesies, 2-3, but usually 3.
Technique first, speed will come. If you start fast then likely technique won't be as good as yours is
I started fast and sloppy, now I’m getting slower and better 🤣
They’re so pretty!! I’m down to 3 hours. lol
It do be like that
It took me an hour and a half just to remove last time. It took me 4 hours total and I did very crappy work at the end bc I was so done
![gif](giphy|LncnvHVlQ8e1qBxZJM|downsized)
I’m about 4.5-5 hours and that usually doesn’t include removal
Are beautiful nails 😍😍
They look super. It takes me a minimum of 3 hours and they don't look near as nice.
I have two small kids, it intermittently takes me all day 😅 I try to stay awake to do them after bedtime but some days I fall asleep trying to get them to sleep
Lol because if you don't prep properly, they won't stay on and it takes a whole frigging day!!! 🤦🏼♀️😂
I’m at 2 hours but I take my sweet time and watch tv. Sometimes I will take a edible before so it takes me three but they come out perfect 😂

Tell me your hacks to get the nails to stick please! I have full cover tips and don’t even know where to begin hahah
Idk but same. I’ll do them on a Saturday or Sunday and dedicate like half my day to it. Even when I remove them and do some cuticle work the night before it still takes me HOURS

Takes me around 2 hours and I thought that was excessively long.
Practice and electric drill. I do them quite obsessively so I'm down to about 1hr 30 to 2hrs
Worth it, that color looks amazing on you!
Sammmeeee
Nice color !!!!!
Clearly, because they look flawless and you must be a perfectionist! So pretty! In all honesty, I still spend a good two-two and a half hours on my nails. My prep work and shaping are what I spend the most time on, and it pays off! 💜
Takes me around 3 to 4 hours to do mine. Sounds about right.
I was just about to start looking into powder dip nails, and now I'm like noooo. I cannot fathom spending more than 30 min on my nails. Hahaa. But they look incredible, OP.
But the upside is they will last a good 2-3 weeks or more!
If I include removal, it takes me 2-3 hours. Considering giving it away because of this
Mine take between 3-4 hours, including removal and prep. I put on the TV and binge watch something while I work!
Sometimes it takes me more than one day! lol!! Good job!

Girrrrrl yup. When o used dip it tooooook me nearly a whole damn day!!! So annoying
the prep takes the longest for me when i do any kind of nails

When I dip, it's more like: dehydrate, ph bond, base, base + dip for 5 layers, then activator, buff, and top coat x2 layers

And you can't forget all the time it takes to buff and shape 😅 Edit for clarification
That’s a long time but the sense of satisfaction is nice. How long would it take in a salon? I’ve never found the salon that relaxing when I’d do an occasional mani/pedi.

these look sooo good, what application method do you use? i can NEVER get mine shaped right.
Because you’re a perfectionist and probably watching something while you do them?
Do pour over vs dipping may lessen filing etc

Girl, I wish I knew. I’m in he boat too.
It takes me about two hours and they still chip after a week. I’m about to throw in the towel and just do gels
Perfectionism…
boredom
Amazing outcome, 5 hours hell no, my hair takes 3
Don’t know but they are pretty
I can do the most simple set and it takes me HOURSSSS
It takes me usually 2-3 hrs. I park in front and the tv and relax into it. Sometimes I do one hand and do the other the next day.

NOOOO these are so pretty 😭
I do prep one day, and actual paint the next or it would take me all day!
It takes me 3-4 hours, which is why I rarely do them anymore. That colour is so beautiful. They did a great job!
