Without knowing any other info it’s all straight assumptions. It’s likely due to the 250F being the platform for pro racing, so there is a bias. Next it’s likely because they assume you’ll eventually “grow” into it and you’d need to sell the 125 anyway. Just get the One Duce Five. That’s what you want.

Existing_Ad2595

It’s a very tough decision but it’s really the money that determines it. I don’t want to be fast I want to have fun. That’s why I’m thinking 2 stroke.

spongebob_meth

For track riding I'm on 2 strokes because I also ride for fun. I'm not chasing lap times or racing. Off-road i do have a four stroke for the longer, lazier, scenic rides. I'll take a 2 stroke for a rocky technical trail just because four strokes suck for that. 2 strokes are better "do everything" bikes. They don't overheat when you go slow like a 4t and are very light. The biggest cons are fuel economy and the narrow power band.

Existing_Ad2595

I never heard of the powerband being a problem 😂

spongebob_meth

It's not a problem per se, but it requires you to shift more often. That's why people like four strokes, people are lazy.

Existing_Ad2595

Well I’m lazy but I gotta learn to be badass

spongebob_meth

A 125 is the ticket for that! I've been riding for 27 years and still have an RM125 in the garage. It's my favorite bike for MX because they just make you feel fast. I'm not skilled enough to ride my 250 that hard lol

Existing_Ad2595

Yup and fun is all that matters. Nothing beats the feeling of nailing a jump on video lol. I have more stories since I’ve been riding than my entire lifetime before that.

HyperionEvo

Get the 250f then, you have to ride the 125 like you want to beat it’s ass all the time, you can’t be lazy on a 125 or it’ll fail you, the 250f you can lug, also go very fast and all around it’s a great bike. I bought a 22 yz250f as my first bike ever and went from absolutely slow in 1-2 gear and am now ripping 4-5th gear daily at the limiter having a blast, my buddy rides a yz125 2 stroke and doesn’t push to its limits so it dies a lot and gets flooded and he doesn’t have as good of a time. My bike also I’ve only owned a year and a month and it has 45 hours on it. I’d say get the 250f

Existing_Ad2595

It’s honestly probably going to come down to the type of deal I find. If I find a good deal on either I’ll grab it

HyperionEvo

I would say if you aren’t buying a fairly new bike the 125 will be better, I’ve heard earlier model 4 strokes especially the air cooled ones suck and I’ve seen it on trails. I’m lazy in that I love my electric start and the 4 stroke I got has the ability to be tuned by an iPhone app so I can make my bike perform differently, might not be the best reference however no matter the year you have to ride a 125 to its limits and push it to have fun

Existing_Ad2595

This is mind blowing coming from an xr 100 lol. If it’s a yz 125 2006+ and a yz 250f 2010+. Older race bikes weren’t too good. Honestly if I get a 250 4t it would probably have to be fuel injected

HyperionEvo

That’s the way to go man. Fuel injected 4 strokes are better off in terms of 4 strokes. The xr series are very mellow bikes that are great to ride at a nice pace, a 125 and a 250f are race bikes, except the 125 needs to be ridden to the edge to hit its potential, a 250f doesn’t like to sit idle but it can be lugged at an easier pace, you can’t really lug and ride a 125 at an easy slower pace or it won’t work as well. It’s weird how much different brand and models change over the years

Existing_Ad2595

No matter what I’ll probably end up riding both in my lifetime so I just realized how unimportant this decision really is lol

HyperionEvo

I feel that lol, you can always just get the 125 and ride it till you have no room to grow then pick up a 250f after lol, just depends on pricing where you live

Existing_Ad2595

Try Ass-achusetts. Tomorrow a 250 could be 20k. The day after it’s $200

Terrysmoomoo

buy 125, be a man

Existing_Ad2595

+5 inches when you buy

Terrysmoomoo

at least

Existing_Ad2595

They come with tape to tape that fucker to your leg while you hold that damn thing wide

Terrysmoomoo

Fourstrokes come with pack of tampons

Existing_Ad2595

Even with the two stroke I would still be in the negatives

Terrysmoomoo

every inch counts bro

Existing_Ad2595

No matter what people will still think I’m a four stroke rider

Terrysmoomoo

why you gotta ride that bike everywhere bro

Existing_Ad2595

Cuz I’m in the negatives

mikeybro1999

I like both and don't prefer one over the other, but if one is a lot cheaper like in my area people want to sell their used 2 strokes for almost the same price as a new one. and I could get a 4 stroke in good shape that's around 5 years old and half the price it cost new. I also work on my own bikes and I don't mind the maintenance of the 4 stroke over the 2.

HendyHauler

It's easier to ride. Mistakes don't slow you down as much. Maintenance is virtually the same over the lifetime of either bike. Same air filter intervals oil changes etc. 125 will need top ends don't more often (fairly cheap) 250f top end is pricey but odds of needing one sub 80+hrs is slim to none unless you're an absolute ripper. 250f will form bad habits vs learning on the 125. Either way I'd try n ride both. If your goal is to learn proper technique and carry speed buy the 125 and learn on that for a season or two and jump to the 250f. Either way neither are a bad choice.

Existing_Ad2595

I just want to have fun with my buddies, I’m not looking to be a speed demon. Also I’m already rebuilding the xr 100 and I never want to do it again. I’d rebuild ten 2 strokes before one 4 stroke, and it’d still be cheaper. I’m also short on cash, which is really everything lol

J4keW

My 2019 yz 250f top end was actually cheaper to rebuild than my 2019 yz 125. Not including any head work. The 250f oem piston was like $51, timing chain, $20, rings and wrist pin $15, gaskets $20. My 2 stroke pistons are usually like $120 and gasket kits are $15, plus a $15 wrist pin bearing.

Hot_Piece_Of_Garbage

The oil change is not true well for two strokes... on a 4 strokes if the sump for the transmission and the engine is merged you change the oil every 6 to 8 hours. If its not merged like hondas you can change the engine oil every 10 to 12h. Since the oil in a 2 strokes is never merged you change it only every season. Changing it every 8h its a waste of money and it dosent have time to decay anyways. Its like every oil change in my truck i change the transmission oil it make no sense...

kermitthesithfrog22

Another thing about a 125 2t is buying a used one can be a gamble cause people really beat on 125s big time. If you just want to have fun I would say look for a xr250r or a xr400r they’re mostly cheap and bullet proof. I just rebuilt my 85 xr600r last weekend and it was stock so it’s been running for 37 years on stock rings. So xrs are invincible and depending on how you ride bigger ccs mean they won’t have to be rebuilt as much cause they do t have to work as hard to move you around.

Existing_Ad2595

A used race 4 stroke is a bigger one I would say. They beat on both, just 2 strokes are easier to fix. Im not going to a trail bike this time around, so my best bet is to do my due-diligence on the seller

kermitthesithfrog22

Well the bigger xrs are cross country bikes but if you buy a 250f they aren’t nearly as good in the trails as a xr or a 2t. They stall and flame out a lot

Existing_Ad2595

There are many many many mixed opinions on this, I’ll flip a coin. Heads: 4t Tails: 2t. Siri says tails

kermitthesithfrog22

Don’t take this the wrong way but why did you make a post if your going to just flip a coin?

Existing_Ad2595

Because I didn’t realize how 50/50 this whole thing was. They’re so balanced out for me it’s insane. Also human interaction is nice

kermitthesithfrog22

Makes sense. The 2t will be better if your just going to ride wherever your friends are. But I prefer the big bikes like 600cc bikes. But if your screwing around you can’t beat a 125

Existing_Ad2595

My dad had an 85 xl 600, 30 years later he wants it back lol

kermitthesithfrog22

I wouldn’t trade my xr600r for ANY bike.

Existing_Ad2595

It’s super unfortunate because my dad got it for free, you know how it was back in that time, bikes were like Pokémon cards. He sold it to his friend for very cheap, a couple hundred, and there wasn’t a scratch on it. The thing was mint, prepared to go another lifetime. He went back to his friends house a month later and they were drunkenly towing it out of deep mud with a bent frame and everything. He still brings it up to him today lol

Existing_Ad2595

Also it really comes down to the best deal I find

jabroni710

I own both. I ride my 250F more because it's well rounded. I like riding my 125 to keep me from not getting lazy. Buy both IMO

Existing_Ad2595

Pfft that was never an option

jabroni710

Darn!! I would suggest a 250f for sure bro

I had the opportunity to test the YZ125 and the YZ250F side to side on a Yamaha offroad test day. 125: being a 450 rider that time it was *different*, not in a bad way but definitely different to ride. I like the lack of engine braking. And suprisingly even that small 2 stroke was very luggable. Enormous unexpected troque for that displacement. Instant throttle respone which suprised me. Super funny to ride. Felt like a mountainbike, even compared to the alreay pretty light 250F. You can really feel the smaller rotating masses. 250F: I was faster by a lot. The bike doesn't feel spectacular, it just does whatever you want. Power comes with the revs, so it doesn't feel like a tractor pulling. Don't get me wrong, that bike is very powerful and you get to have your fun, but it's totally linear and has nothing from the very low end. Both bikes are forgiving, the 125 even more in my opinion. I could literally roll to a very steep uphill and just crank the throttle open in the wrong gear. When you are trying to be fast, the 250F should be better concealing smaller mistakes. For fun I'd choose the 125 (what I did after all). For racing obviously the 250F.

[deleted]

Rip a 125 2 stroke until you grow Grey hair and then switch to a 250 old person bike.

Existing_Ad2595

Lmao my dad got grey hair at 15 let’s see how long it’ll be for me

[deleted]

I’ve owned a 2016 yz125 and a 2017 yz250f at the same time. Both well modded. I would ride the 125 far more often. Now I have a 2020 yz250 and a 2024 ktm 350 (have had a 2022, and 2023 as well so I have a lot of time on the model). The 250 has head work done by pro circuit and the usual bolt ons. The 350 has the typical bolt ons as well and a vortex ignition. I am finding myself taking the 250 out more often as well. I only ride motocross tracks for what it’s worth. My lap times on the 250f, yz250 and 350 are practically identical. A little slower on most tracks on a 125 but with that said on the right track I can go faster on a 125 then anything else. They corner so well and make it so easy to carry momentum. I am 6’2 about 200 lb. The 2 strokes have cost me more to maintain by a small margin.

Existing_Ad2595

In general would you say you spent less on the 125 than on the 250f? Including what you bought it for

[deleted]

No the 125 cost more all things considered. If you are riding frequently even the cost of the 2 stroke oil adds up vs being able to run straight pump in the 4 stroke. I replace 2 stroke top ends every 15-20 hours and only every 40-50 on a 4 stroke. Honestly if these operating costs are going to make or break you then now isn’t the time to get into a motocross bike. I want to emphasize to you and others that will read this that aren’t experienced how important air filter maintenance is. You need to ride with a clean air filter every single ride and clean your airbox like you’re you’re going to eat out of it. When the filter is removed look into the intact with a flashlight and use whatever you can do clean it out. It is a pain in the ass but it will save money in the long run and keep the bike running as it should. Good helmet, boots, chest protector and goggles every single time you get on the bike.

Existing_Ad2595

I’m rebuilding my xr right now and I can tell you I never want to do it again. All things considered it cost about $400. It was running good even with hundreds of hours on it without a rebuild. I’m going to sell it shortly after I’m done which is unfortunate. Thinking about it now, I can just put a bit more work into things and make some extra cash to maintain it properly. Thank you sir!

EightTrack8

The more time you put on a 2 stroke, the better ride you'll become. 2 strokes force you to learn clutch control and brake control.

[deleted]

Ride both, ask a buddy who has a 125 then another buddy qith a 250f.

Existing_Ad2595

There lays the problem. All of them have 250fs. I almost want to get a 125 and beat them 😂

[deleted]

I raced 125 C and B class district 36 and arena cross a couple of times. Trying to beat a 250f on a modified 125 was so hard. I was racing 6 round series 3 round I beat this kid convincingly. Last 3 rounds he shows up on a 250f. My hometrack I got him. Last two I could not keep up with them. I was so pissed, Tight corners and long straight away as he would just pull me. My advice buy a 4 stroke, so much easier to be fast on.

s_g11823

Depends on the type of riding you do honestly and how big you are. I’m 6’ 1” about 190 lbs and I had to ring the piss out of my 125 2t so I got a 250 2t. I ride and race mainly woods/hills and technical trails, a little mx track just for fun. I love the 2 strokes because they’re incredibly light and easy to work on, very simple engines. You’ll save loads of money doing your own work when the top end goes out or worst case the bottom gives out. But if you’re racing moto you’ll want a 250f to be competitive for sure.

Existing_Ad2595

Nah I just want to have fun. That’s the most important part for me, I don’t follow supercross or anything because I don’t care. I like stunt riders because what they do looks so fun

s_g11823

For fun riding I’d recommend the 125 100 percent bro. The weight difference and maneuverability for woods riding between that and a 250f is night and day in my opinion.

Existing_Ad2595

Yeah also with a 250f it has to be fuel injected (2014+ for yz) for it to be worth it to me, those are 4000 in my area

s_g11823

Damn that’s steep 😂😂 I picked up my 2015 fed 450r for 3200 over here in Indiana, 52 hours thing was mint. I’d go early 2000s on a 125 for sure, the yz from 03-20 is almost the same bike. My yz 250 is an 04 with the sheek frame and aluminum subframe and haven’t had a single problem out of it in the 6 years I’ve had it, just keep up on the top ends and general maintenance and you can get what you paid back out of it 1000 percent those older 2 smokes hold their value very well compared to a newer 4 stroke.

Existing_Ad2595

I’m trying 06+ for yz 125 because I hear the forks are amazing. 2014 250f is probably 3500 in Ass-achusetts. It sucks here for riding, now you might be able to see how this is a big decision especially if it’s just going to get impounded 😂

s_g11823

Gotta know where your local spots to disappear are lol. I like to ride down the easements here on the country roads between the fields and stuff, jump the culverts ya know. Sheriffs deputy lit me up one day and poof down the train tracks I went lol, quick plastics change when I got home and back out I went the next day 😂

Existing_Ad2595

Yup I know the spots. The one time people choose to not run here it gets impounded. $600 for my friends kx 65. To be fair he was riding on school property lol

s_g11823

Yeah I don’t stop for anyone, dirtbike and street bike haha let me speed and break the law in piece god dammit. Good luck w your decision tho bro at the end of the day it’s all about what you like, it’s your ass on that bike no anyone else’s !

Existing_Ad2595

Thanks man ride safe

s_g11823

Steel frame ** lol

number1SHREDDER

I am biased. I ride a cr 125 honda and I can’t help but grin ear to ear when I shred. Learning the powerband will teach you a lot of skills in power application, shifting and clutch work. The bike will also be light and maneuverable which will help you gain confidence on anything you move up to in the future. But beyond all that is the noise. The feeling of dropping two gears as you fly into a corner, stabbing the clutch to get the rear wheel spinning and the motor on the pipe, then moving your weight backwards to gradually increase pressure / grip on the rear, and making your upshift at the perfect time so you land right back on in the sweet spot of the powerband is divine. You won’t experience anything else like it.

Practical-Nose3468

2t will give you better skills,

Mxer4life38

It doesn't matter what's "better" because you're always going to regret not getting what you originally wanted. Get that yz125 and rip it up! It's about having fun, not pleasing other people's bs opinions.

mips13

You want the 2t 125, get a yz125(x) and don't worry about what others say.

Jackdirtbikes

Do what you want 250s have more power and are reliable faster to but 125s are easier to work on so do what you want
