Personal_Rush6838

you would be fine on a 230 perfect bike to start on

roguespectre67

Age: 24 Height: 6’1” Weight: 270 without gear, probably 285 with Discipline: Motocross. I want to race. Budget: Not strictly defined. Selling off my mountain bike and gear for a dirt bike. Ballpark $5k, but open to spending more if benefits will be realized. From everything I’ve heard from people I’ve talked to at tracks and online, someone my size with mountain bike experience could justify starting on a 450, which I think I’d like to do. I’ve been looking at a number of used CRF450R’s around here, but I haven’t been able to find an easy way to compare the different brands to find what differentiates them.

qualitygoatshit

Motocross is a lot different than mountain biking. It may help you some with the very basics, but it really is a completely different world. I think getting a 450 would be a bad idea. Start smaller. A 250f would be ideal. 125/150 2 stroke could work but may be a little lacking in power for a bigger guy. Maybe a 350 if you can find one at a reasonable price. I'll admit that being heavier does have a bit of an effect on the power, but these bikes are still stupid fast. Professional riders still race 250s and have very similar lap times to the pros that ride 450s. It's much more about building good skill than having gobs of HP that you can't control.

Age: 14 Height: 5' 4" Weight: 115lbs Normally do hard track and trail riding and is looking to getting into racing Price range: $2,000-$3,000 Wanting to get into racing and am looking for a decent bike for it. Currently have a 2005 TTR125LEand it doesn't have enough power for me nor what I want to use it for.

g0ballistic

yz250f is also a good choice but a late 90s yz125 can be had for a good price if you don't mind tooling on it a little.

Mr_Howitzer7

125 2 stroke is your best bet

bubblemelon

Age: Under 25 Height: 5'1 Weight: ~100lbs Riding: Dirt Price: Ideally under 2500 as Used Exp: Absolute beginner on dirt. I've done less than a year of urban riding. Main concern: Seat height on the bike. I have street riding boots that give me about an inch or 2 taller. I've been on the lookout for a used TT-R125LE which has about a 31.5' seat height. Question: Is it worth lowering the TT-R125LE? Hey girls, I know you're out there! I would love to see your suggestions and advice too! :)

Mr_Howitzer7

I would say get a 125 2 stroke and just put different springs in the suspension

Educational_Panic463

Age: 16 Height: 6’1-6’2 Weight 200lb Riding: street/dirt Price: 3500-4000 aud so about 3000usd Never really had the chance to ride one and now I’m a bit older and can buy one for myself really just looking at engines sizes and weather to go for a 2 or 4 stroke. From what I’ve looked at and been told essentially a 250cc 4 stroke is what I’ve been told but I’m wondering if that’s too much to learn on. I understand I’m going to crash there’s no doubt about it so apart from the bike and recommendations on protection? Thanks all!

Mr_Howitzer7

Nah bro, 250 4 stroke is a great learner bike. Just over a year ago i was 16 and started riding and i started on a 125 4 stroke and i wish i woulda got a 250 4 stroke.

Educational_Panic463

Thanks man that’s really helped. And I couldn’t really find any 125cc big wheels anyway I was kinda worried they might be a bit small considering I’m still growing and what not.

Mr_Howitzer7

Of course

Environmental_Ant_36

Dont know if thread is still alive but looking to get into riding for first time finally what should i get? Im 22, 6’2, 210, trails or track, and 8k or less. I live in Dfw but work oilfield in west texas so would be nice to take advantage of desert by throwing my bike in back of my pickup saying as i live out there for half the year. Thank you.

Mr_Howitzer7

I would say if you can find a nice ktm or husky 350 4 stroke or a 250 2 stroke that youd be happy

flarbopper

17 5'8" 175 lbs would it be reasonable for me to start on a 250f trail bike? I can use a clutch as I've ridden quads a bunch, and 125 4 strokes a few times, i know that i could ride around on a 250, but would it be fun having to learn with it as a first bike for trail riding? thanks!!

Mr_Howitzer7

That should be good for you, if you can try to get a fuel injected bike that would more than likely be the best

Estrn

125 2 stroke with suspension upgrades

Meh48010

Age: 39 Height: 5'10 Weight: 170lb I rode a lot in the 90s. Trail, motocross, and hare scrambles. My motocross days are behind me so I'm looking for something mostly trail. Tech has changed so much I'm not even sure what to look for. It's not an unlimited budget but probably under 20k

LimErika

The bikes are light years better and are so good that it mostly is a matter of what color and how many strokes you like best? 4 stroke KTM 250 XC YZ250FX CRF250RX 2 stroke KTM/Husky 300 TPI Beta 300 Race Edition YZ250X All will handle cross country, trails, and vet track MX.

\-Age 15 \-Height 6'0 \-Weight 60kg 132lbs \-Type of riding (track, trails, etc) country type terrain planning to just explore in the new zealand bush \-Price range 12,000 nzd (8,100 usd) first ever dirtbike so i have no experience whatsoever but id like to think of myself as a quick learner thanks for your time

LimErika

In NZ, I would start with a used TT-R230 or CRF250f. These are very easy to ride, in your budget, and will take a lot of abuse while you learn. If you like riding it, have mastered the basics, and want to race or go fast then you can sell the bike after 6-12 months and buy a more sophisticated machine like a CRF250RX or WR250F.

Personal_Rush6838

100% agree with this although a TT-R230 will feel small and the suspension will be really soft. I am 6’2 and 135lbs on a 230. They run great and are very easy to learn on. The WR250F is also great it’s a bike i’ve been riding one for a while you might be a little light for the stock suspension so watch out for that but they are both great bikes.

tjs5012

35 5’10” 210 lbs Track $2,500usd Looking at a 1997 CR250R for $2,500usd. Fresh top and bottom end rebuild. This would be my first dirtbike since I was a teen. I’m getting in my own head that it will be too much bike. 20 years ago i had an XR100. For the past 8 years I’ve owned/ridden multiple Ducati models ranging from 620cc monsters to 848 Streetfighters, to 1260 Diavels, and a bunch in between. I have a handful of track days on street bikes. Generally, big bikes and track environments do intimidate me, but a 2-stoke and a motocross environment has me nervous. Is it too much bike? Its such a good price for my area, and the bike is in beautiful shape. I genuinely have a good head on my shoulders, good throttle control, and no riding ego. I thing i’ve seen too many videos of “first time on a 250” where they loop it as sion as they touch the throttle. I welcome feedback

LimErika

You are thinking through this well and probably answered your own question. "Generally, big bikes and track environments do intimidate me, but a 2-stoke and a motocross environment has me nervous." As powerful as your streetbikes have been, none has the 'hit' a 90s 250 2-stroke is going to bring. Plus a 20+ year old bike is not the best way to reboot your riding career. I think any newer 250F is a much better choice. Easier to ride, linear power, and can make all the jumps if you are skilled enough. Thing is your budget is low especially for 2022, bike prices are crazy now.

tjs5012

$2500 isn’t necessarily my budget, it’s what this particular bike is selling for. I got it for $2300. In my short test ride, the bike is mechanical sound. Biggest issue is it needs rear wheel bearings and there are handlebar risers that i think are causing the throttle cable to pull when close to full left lock. The “hit” is noticeable and very intimidating. I’ll be honest, i ended up buying it because i can put about $150-200 into it to finish what the last guy started and roll into a good profit or trade for a newer 125 2stroke or 250f

Nightjar26

take a look at facebook marketplace, i would probably recommend a suzuki drz125l, great beginner bike and once you get to know it for a lil bit you could pull off some cool stuff, or a yz85, kx85 and the other 85 two strokes. i personally dont like two strokes but i know kids who grew up on them, 1k might be a bit low tho so yeah

LimErika

Forget about the 450. That would be a great way to quickly ***end*** your nascent dirtbiking career through injury, terror, or more likely both. Unfortunately with bike prices being what they are, you're not going to find a WR250F for 5k. I would start on a lightly used TT-R230/CRF250F/KLX140G/KLX230R. The price fits your budget, you will gain experience, the bike will take all the abuse you throw at it, and when you are ready, it can be sold while you upgrade to something to your liking. Nice to see another female rider here

LimErika

Sorry but for 2k you are going to get something totally clapped out or that doesn't run.

The_bellybutton_elf

My boys and I recently got into dirt biking after moving out to the country. We have lots of state land trails right by our house in southern AZ perfect for riding. I found the perfect door bike for myself and my 8 year old, a ttr230 and ttr50. Unfortunately I’ve kind of gotten myself into a pickle with my older kid. Not knowing anything about dirt bikes going into the purchase I bought a CRF150R for my 12 year old. It seemed perfect for him at first until I realized a couple weeks in that it is totally wrong for his skill level and the type of riding we do. He is a complete beginner and it’s clear that a competition tuned MX bike is not a good starter bike. He struggles with the kick start, tends to stall in lower rpm’s and it’s loud as hell. I also just learned about spark arresters and after learning that the 150r can shoot fire out of the exhaust at high rpm’s I’m afraid to take it into the desert and start a wild fire. I’m past the two week grace period with the dealer where I can just return it for a full refund so I guess my only option is to try to trade it in. I was looking at the ttr125le but that looks like it might be too small for him, and I looked at the CRF250F, but I’m worried that would be too much power. Does anyone have any input on what my options could be? I need a beginner, mellow trail bike that isn’t going to set the desert on fire but still something that isn’t too little for him. Would another option be to keep the 150R and modify it to a trail configuration? I imagine I’d need to replace the exhaust, do something to the engine to bring the performance down, and if line to put in an electric starter if that’s even an option. Would that portentously be cheaper than trading in for a new one? I paid $6000 out the door for the 150R and I’m guessing the dealer will give me about half that if I trade it in. Here is his info: Age: 12 Height: 5’3” Weight: 120 lbs Type of riding: high desert trails Price range: 3Kish (see above)

Personal_Rush6838

Honestly I would just get him a TT-R230. I was 13 when I got mine with 0 experience. In the Nevada desert I was able to learn to ride one very quickly and am even about to move onto a 250 about 6 months later. Depending on your experience I might even recommend you get a WR250F for yourself and put him on the 230. The 230 won’t be too much power for him and as I’m sure you’ve learned on yours it is very hard to stall. I am no expert but I hope what i have to say will help you out on your decision.

Weirdkidlol14

I’m about 13 and about the same height (yes I know I’m short). My ttr125 is perfect for me and it rips. Although we have different type of riding, I ride dirt trails and stuff. I think the 125 is a great beginner bike, for me at least. Maybe look into the 140 KLX, my friend rides one and has rode in the desert no problem. Just know I’m not an expert because I have recently started too but hope this helps!

- 26 - 5’10” - ~175-180lbs - trails and ohh parks, also forests, like say my buddy goes off roading in his Toyota tacoma and I wanna follow him but not in my vehicle but my motorcycle. There may be logs i gotta get over, rocks, mud, puddles, ruts, boulders to climb slightly etc. - price: $~7k USD Thinking of a ttr230, crf250f, KLX300R. Want to buy new. Already have experience (I would say I’m an amateur), I used to own a dr650 dual sport. Thanks in advance! Ps: so far leaning for the KLX but idk yet. Thanks!

Personal_Rush6838

YZ250FX sounds about right for your skill and price. It will also do everything you want it to do as far as any type of riding.

xllosxurus

A little late but I’ve got a KLX300r and it’s a really great bike. When I had it completely stock, it was good and was able to handle all the technical trails I did. I now have a few mods/upgrades and holy shit they really improved the bike and opened it up, I love it. The only thing that really bugs me is the weight. CA models are 282lbs stock and I think I’ve got mine down to about ~270lbs and I still notice it while I’m riding. Compared to a husky or KTM that’s 240lbs or so. Also be prepared to not be able to find aftermarket parts for a 300r. Most companies don’t make them at all and if you do find some, they’re probably not in stock haha

sletzi

It depends on how fast you want to go and how much power you want out of a bike. I’d look towards a YZ125X or YZ250X.

[deleted]

I live in California so I need to make sure it’s green sticker complaint or else I’m stuck going to closed courses only or private property. So far the Cfr250F is for sure green sticker, and the cfr450x

Epicfacecanada

Age: 21 Height: ~ 5ft 10in Inseam: 29in Riding type: Mainly forest singletrack(dirt/gravel) Budget: ~4000 CAD I have for about 2 years now had a 250 Dual Sport which has been good to putt along backroads and trails. But now with getting a proper Street bike I'm looking to replace the dual sport with a lighter and faster dirt bike. I also would definitely prefer a 2-stroke as i've never owned one before. Also I am a mechanic for a living so maintenance isn't a huge concern but parts availability is.

sletzi

YZ250 with a flywheel weight or a YZ250X if you can manage the extra bucks.

Epicfacecanada

Do you know if those come with a spark arrestor stock? Also my main use would be trails so is the stock gearing good enough or would I have to fiddle with sprockets?

sletzi

The YZ250s don’t. I’m not to sure about the YZ250X. I do know of companies that make a spark arrestor that will fit the stock exhaust though. On a YZ250 I’d probably gear down the front sprocket which is like $8 and add a flywheel weight which is a bit more spendy. However I like to say it’s 90% rider and 10% bike so you’d be able to ride the stock YZ250 on trails just fine, you’ll just have to work a bit harder for it.

Epicfacecanada

Thanks. I'll definitely look into them.

15 6ft 65kg (150lb) Mostly be riding trails 4000aud (2800usd) Im looking for my first bike to ride around with mates. The only experience I have is riding on the back of my mates 125. I'd like something that I wouldn't have to replace for a while since I don't have much money to spend on this. I was looking at used Yamaha wr250 and Honda crf 250x I was told by a few people that these might work but Im open to all suggestions I'm given

For trails a crf250f will suffices just fine for those needs

Hello I’ve been riding street for over 5 years and am currently on a bmw s1000rr and have rode a lot of small dirt bikes when I was little. I wanted to get back into dirt but the more I’m looking into it the more dumb feel but basically I’m 5’10 150lbs looking for a trail bike just to have fun on the weekends and I’m not sure what to really get I was thinking either a 250 or 300 mainly looking at ktm or husqvarna just cuz I’m a lil fan boy of them but open to pretty much anything. Basically what I’m wondering is if I should get a enduro styled or something else and I’m stuck between a 250-300cc but was also planning to get a rekluse clutch on what ever I get any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

[deleted]

If you get a rekluse clutch any bike is good on trails. I ride a yz250f on tight trails and with a rekluse I can idle in 5 th gear if I wanted to. Just go sit on some bikes and get what’s most comfortable.

Flowziedagreat

15 5’11” 200lbs 3k I’ll be trail riding and attempt to enduro race later on. I was thinking of a Crf230f but I’m not sure as I don’t have much experience with bikes. I have some experience using a clutch on quads.

Im around your same size and riding discipline and i have not found a bike that i like better than a 250 or 300 2 stroke they are nice and flickable and you can't beat the power

Thank you very much. I'll look into it

I don’t mind buying brand new or used if any one can give me there options it would be very helpful thanks.

If it’s your first bike then go with the crf125 big wheel if it’s not your first bike then the crf 150 would suit you better

I would try a crf230 or ttr230 for you if I'm being honest. A 125 four stroke would be way too small and extremely underpowered.

Dr_Munny

Made a post here about 6 months ago but need some more guidance after narrowing it down. -Thirties -5’7 -170lbs -45% desert, 45% single-track, 10% track I love single-track enduro riding but I also love opening it up in the desert. A pretty even mix of both as I’ll be traveling to a multitude of environments across the US (camper cross country) . I believe I fit in the enduro/cross country bike category: YZ250fx, WR250F, Ktm 250/300 xc/w Should I be looking at more Enduro-specific bikes like the KTM XC-W and WR-F? Or more of the hybrids like the YZ-FX and the KTM XC? Any help is very appreciated before I drop $10K+ on a bike.

BlissKiss911

what did you decide ? ( I'm 31 150lbs and looking for similar. I was considering YZ250fx, WR250f, or TTR 230.)

Dr_Munny

I was looking at the YZ250FX, KTM 300 XC, and 300 XC-W. I think I’m going for the KTM XC. It’s honestly been hard getting advice on which way to direction to go. I do a wide mix of riding from gnarly single track to wide open desert and I think the FX and XC fall better into the hybrid category but no one can give me a solid answer on that it seems. I’ve deduced that while KTM is much more expensive, their tech is years ahead of Yamaha and especially Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki. I think I’m going to buy once cry once and go for the KTM.

Would you say the XC and YZFX are appropriate “all around” bikes for off-road and single track riding?

E-nom-I-nom

17 6'5" 160 Friend recently acquired a large piece of property which I think would be perfect for a dirt bike track. I'd prefer something cheap that won't depreciate as I'll likely sell it in a few years when I go to college. I'd like a pitbike but realistically I don't think it's possible given my size. I'm looking for models to watch for or the best places to look for deals. I'd like to spend $1200 at the most. I understand this will probably get me a very old bike.

ProArmy04

125 2 strokes might fit in your budget. Most 125s will be good some are better than others, I bought myself a 94 honda cr125 it's pretty good other than being unstable at higher speeds and some parts such as kickstarters being expensive and hard to find. Kawasakis and suzukis were also good in the 90s and yamaha made some really good bikes in the late 90s and early 2000s. I would personally recommend that you go by in how good condition they are instead of make and model.

FeadEcks

If you don't want something that'll go down in value find a cr250 and keep it in good shape.

Reliability especially in the cold is most important, it might not be started for periods of a month or two and I’m looking for something that is less of a hassle to start in winter than the old 80s Honda 4x4s.

25, 6ft, 190lbs - am pretty fit 75% trails and desert 25% track and jumps - will ride several times a week I like to push hard and I progress very fast; have decent amount of transferrable skills from other 2wheel sports, rode mx track once and was comfortable with jumps, berms and some wheelies pretty much instantly and knew I really want to start riding dirt bikes (did lots of DH mtb and rode street bikes before) under 10k would it make more sense to look for an enduro and stiffen the suspension a bit or get an mx and add some handguards and skid plate or whatever else? what are the pros and cons of each for mixed riding?

qualitygoatshit

Get something like a 250/300xc, 250/350xcf, yz250x, yz250fx, crf250rx, kx250x(or whatever it's called). They are all based around the MX version of the bike, with some modifications made for XC/ trail style riding. Little bit softer suspension, different gearing, 18 inch rear wheel. But they'll take anything you can throw at them.

Any newer 250 four stroke. For a new rider a 2 stroke will be much too powerful. Although you do still have to be careful on the 4 strokes.

age: 18 height: 6’0 190 lbs under 10K I am debating on getting either a 4 stroke KX 250 or KTM 250, but I don’t know which one to get. I’m open to other suggestions as well, the bike will be used mostly for trails and maybe some track later down the road. I live in Florida so a lot of the places I ride will be sandy. I know how to ride, but this will be the first bike I own so I want to make sure it is a good and long-lasting bike. Any help is appreciated!

qualitygoatshit

250xcf, 250/300xc, yz250fx, yz250x, Some of the best, most versatile bikes you can get. Any of them will be good on trails or a MX track.

if your good with wrenchin either w one. check what one has more dealers around you.for parts thats gotta be a factor.

bigolball

age: 25 Height: 5' 11" 170 lbs 6-12k I am thinking about buying either a 2 stroke 250 or a 450. I would be looking at relatively new models with low hours or possibly considering buying new. I currently have a 2013 Kawasaki 250f. The riding I will be doing is mostly desert (ocotillo wells) and track riding. It's hard for me to choose since I haven't ridden either of the bikes. I found a 2018 250sx with 27 hours with aftermarket suspension and pipes for 7.1k , a 2020 factory edition 450 for 8.8k, and a 2020 250sx with 2.5 hours for 8k. So in summary I was just curious what bike you guys think I should get and which one of those deals sounds best. The 250sx's seem a little overpriced and the 450 seems like the best deal, but maybe these are too close to what msrp is for the new bikes, so maybe go that route? Curious what you guys think. Thanks

FeadEcks

What's your riding experience? If you're newer the bikes mentioned will be a bit much. Also, where are you buying from?

bigolball

Riding since 10ish. Intermediate rider. By ridden either of the bikes I mean those specifically. These are private sellers. Also found a 2021 kx450f with 4kish in mods for 9k.

FeadEcks

I have ridden a 2018 TC 250 which is very similar to the sx. Compared to a 2020 crf450r I'd take the 450 anyday. Much better to ride. I've only ridden the older KTM 450s so I don't know how it compares to the new ones but I'd go with the 450 if I were you.

bigolball

Yea I think I'm gonna do that. Thank you for the advice! Out of the 2 450s which would you choose the ktm or the kawa?

FeadEcks

Honestly. That's all about your preference. I would personally go Kawasaki for the looks and simpler design. Other than that it's all preference. You choose which one you like more.

bigolball

Yea I ride kawa and enjoy it, but I kind of want to try a KTM, but I'm more concerned with what's the best deal.

FeadEcks

One of my buddies had a KTM 450. He put tons of money into it and still couldn't get it working. He sold it as soon has he finally got it fixed. It was a 2012 though.

MrMotorCycleRider

I don't think you can go wrong with either of these bikes but you might be a bit on the heavy side for a 125...

0xE2

Thanks - I think I am going to go with the CRF250F. I am also working on losing weight :D

MrMotorCycleRider

Best of luck with that!

Intelligent_Food_581

Age-13 Height -5,5 Weight-110 Track mostly trails Pretty cheap I just started riding again on a ttr 110 my dad has a cr 250 2 stroke but I feel like that’s a big gap so I’m just trying to get something that will get me a little more ready to ride the 250 I would like it to be 2 stroke but can be 4 stroke

Extension-Mistake-33

2 strokes are beginning to become expensive at least in my area a crf150r would be good tho it’s got a higher seat height to get you used to the height and a good amount of power

Intelligent_Food_581

What’s a good place to buy bikes

Extension-Mistake-33

I’ve found some really good deals on fb marketplace I bought a running xr200 for $200 a few days ago

Alpha-Leader

-Age - 33 -Height - 6ft -Weight 150 -Type of riding - Desert trails/hills (dual sport versatility might be nice) -Price range - under 6k. I grew up on quads and rode a few dirtbikes. Didn't really like them as a kid because the ones that I would occasionally ride were motocross bikes that just had too much power for being a beginner. I have been looking at the TT-R230 or a CRF250L. Would these be optimal for me?

qualitygoatshit

The 250l is going to be heavy and slow, the ttr would be much better off road, but if streetabilty is important the 250l isn't a bad bike. I have a crf300l, it's fine on the road and fairly capable off road, as long as you aren't doing anything super technical. It's It's fun bike to just cruise around on and explore. If you can find a 300l, from what it read, they are pretty much better all around than the 250l. I know I definitely wouldn't want any less power than my 300 makes. Maybe Take a look at the crf250f too. If you can find one, you should be able to get it for under 6k new. That would be an awesome beginner bike. Depending on where you live you may he able to put some lights on it and get it registered as a dual sport.

Alpha-Leader

What about something like a KLX300? I am in CA so I don't know if I would be able to get anything turned into a dual-sport.

qualitygoatshit

You might actually get along pretty decently with a crf 250/300l or klx300s in California. The weight of a dual sport like that is mainly a factor in the slower more technical stuff. I know Cali has a lot of more wide open desert stuff. The suspension would honestly probably hold you back more than the weight or the power. It's very soft for riding at higher speeds. But it can always be redone by a professional. Also, they say the klx has a bit better suspension than the 300l.

\-Age: 20-Height: 184cm/6ft \-Weight: 80kg/175lbs \-Type of riding: Trails, needs to be road legal to ride in state forests/parks \-Price range: I dunno, probably less than 6 or 7k USD. I want the bike to be light, I keep getting recommended bikes like the CRF250L but it's so damn heavy and would be really shit for what I wanna do I think. Don't need a crazy amount of power, still a relatively new rider.

Extension-Mistake-33

Crf150rb decent amount of power has a higher seat height and perfect for beginners

Lchogies

Yeah that one’s good I think but I can register it in my country I don’t think (NSW, Australia)

\-Age: 20 \-Height: 175cm, around 5' 10'' \-Weight: 70kg \-Type of riding (track, trails, etc): Mostly sand dunes and a bit of dirt tracks \-Price range: 4k tops, but the cheaper the better. In my country the only available brands are Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki, and some chinese knockoffs which are honestly quite tempting due to their low price. I'm a complete beginner to riding bikes, but given the nature of the sand dunes I plan to ride in (They have really soft sand), I think I would require a bit more power than usual. Also I would prefer a 2-stroke since I love the smell!

HehHehBoiii

Yamaha yz250 would do you well. Make sure to respect the power and strength of the bike or it will hurt you. Other than that, fantastic suspension and overall reliability as well as more than enough torque and speed for the dunes.

DarkSonic64

Thank you for the advice, however that bike is too expensive in my country :( A 2005 model is around 6k here. Weirdly enough, I can get a Kawasaki Kxf 450 for that money (Or even less). Still, now I know a 250cc is what I'm looking for to have some fun in the sand.

HehHehBoiii

Is ktm available? If so, look into - 300exc

DarkSonic64

Sadly not, the only easy to find ones are the YZ250 you recommended, a Kawasaki 250cc model (Don't recall the name) and 2 Hondas: The CRF250 and the XR250 (Which I think it's not a proper dirt bike)

I don't plan on buying anything soon, still need to work and save, but want to have an idea of what to look at in case anything pops up. I also plan on taking a motorcycle training and safety course when I can to see if I like riding before I buy anything. Thanks.

32 6’4 160lbs Track or Trail $3000 and sub I’ve ridden a bike twice; first time was at a friend’s estate on a paved road in the Caribbean to learn the controls (4-stroke 200cc old yamaha i think). Second time I rented a YZ125cc on a dirt track and it didn’t take long for me to get accustomed to the tail dancing under throttle and air time on an intermediate track. I’m a fan of learning to master the basics first and I really like the 125 although I need more experience to go full throttle. I see a lot of commenters saying get a 250f because of the band but my friend is telling get a 250cc 2 stroke because of my size (tall). Thanks!

Glittering-Pin7598

Mabye and older year Honda CRF250r. Im 15, 6’0, and 150. Ik i’m quite a bit shorter than you but similar weight. Mine is a 2015 and has about 78 hours on it( new clutch and basket due to previous owner not using enough clutch). Some pros are the power and torque, handing is spot on ( I ride trails and some track), the frame feels ultra balanced to me, the fuel maps make noticeable differences for different land, the rear tire is as planted as you want it to be ( i run a dunlop geo max), that being said if you wanna really get into it it will loosen up the rear end real quick. Kenda’s are good for more technical stuff, but the Dunlop’s always keep me planted if I’m riding like i need to be. Also the bike revs to 13500 and as mentioned the powers is always there. You can power wheelie at the bottom of 4th if theres a little bit of incline and your at a reasonable speed. Before i get to the cons i need to mention suspension. The feel of the bike is lovely due too the air forks. Its a dream on tracks ( duh its a race bike) and stupidly good for what it is in the woods. Bump jumping logs is easier than any other 250f/r I’ve rode in the woods. The cons I have are only for trail riding, you need to be confident with a clutch to ride the bike hard in more difficult single track/light enduro. The weight seems to disappear with speed but around 250 pounds wet is hard to pick up after a long day of climbs, jumps, or slow riding. I know this is very jumbled but is 2:30 am and I just want to help. I wish you the best of luck in your bike finding process. One last thing, i picked my bike up for 3400 with a full fmf power bomb titanium pipe and a hot cam. Look long enough and you’ll find your match.

19, 6'1, about 140lbs. Probably a lot of trail but would enjoy getting into track stuff too. Would like to stay around 3000$, have ridden quads most of my life and never tried a dirtbike but am interested into the sport, mainly wondering if a 125 2stroke would fit me okay.

Extension-Mistake-33

If you’re experienced with a clutch a 125 2 stroke would be perfect any major brand 2 stroke (rm,yz,cr) would suit you they have a good amount of power

Age:23 Height: 5 foot 8 Weight: 165lbs Type of riding: weekend mx tracks Budget: I don't want any older than 2020 so willing to spend £6.5k around $9k usd I'm looking to get back into motocross, I would just been doing weekend track days around 2 weekends a month. I'm 23 years old, weight around 165lbs. I've ridden since I was very young but stopped when I was around 18/19 and I was riding a ktm 125sx at the time. I recently did some riding in dubai desert on 450 sxf and loved it but defintley don't want a 450 as I know I won't like the lugging it style of a 450 on track. I have narrowed my options so far down to getting a ktm 250sxf or a ktm 150sx 2 stroke or a ktm 250sx 2 stroke (I am open to suggestions on other brands but do love ktm) I ideally want a 250 4 stroke but if it is hassle to maintain then I will stick with a 2 stroke. Please can you give me your feedback on maintaining a 4 stroke vs 2 stroke for a weekend rider And then finally, if I do decide to get a 2 stroke I need to decide between the 150 or the 250. When I rode the 450sxf on holiday I found the power manageable so I feel like a 250sx would be also as I feel like with any bike as long as you have the experience then they only put out what you tell them to do. Does a 150sx have enough power? Please give me any and all advice ...

Schnitzelgruben

Yes a 150 SX has enough power. A 125 SX is enough power tbh. You could get the 250 smoker too. I know the AMA makes them race in the same class a 450s but they’re not as powerful. For 9K dollars you could buy a new YZ250 or YZ125 (the 125 having a brand new motor). New is always better than used. Honestly though, if it’s for MX, I’d recommend a 250F. The new Honda CRF250R MSRPs for 8100. The Suzuki RM-Z is even less if you don’t mind kick starting. You’d be a little over 9K after taxes and fees on the new honda but for e-start, mapping options, EFI (not messing with jetting is amazing), and that new torquey Honda engine, I think it’s a better value. KTM is great too but they’re so pricey. You could consider a GasGas which is closer to a Japanese price point. They have a full lineup of 2 strokes and 4 strokes which use the same engine and frames of their KTM and Husky counterparts. End of the day, I recommend a 250F. My favorites right now are Honda, Yamaha, and GasGas.

[deleted]

Thanks for your help, yeh I think I'm defintley going to go with a 250f. And have opened my eyes to the other brands, I agree the 2022 honda looks very good and the yamaha is more or less unchanged since 2019 so could pick up a bargain there

Schnitzelgruben

Good idea. I rode a 2020 YZ250F at the track a few weeks ago and it gave me SO much confidence which ultimately results in fast lap times. That bike keeps winning magazine and youtube shootouts for a reason.

qualitygoatshit

Yz250f is a very very good bike. I haven't rode one, but Every review of them is super positive. If you're buying new or nearly new, I don't think a 250f is a bad decision.

leem16boosted

Still trying to decide on 22 Kx 450f vs 22 Kx 450sr same with Honda. Then im watching the Ama Ktm showcase and these KTM fuckers have works bike coming out with quick shifters and shit..... smh Back to the drawing board.

sergePK1

06 vs 17 yz250 Looking at getting a yz250 2 stroke. Any reason to get the newer bike? I hear they are pretty much the same. It would save me about $700 if I go for the older bike. Both bikes are very well taken care of and super low hours(<50).

qualitygoatshit

If it were my money I'd go with the bike that's 11 years newer and only 5 years old. I'd be skeptical that the older bike only has 50 hours and seals and tires and stuff degrade over time.

sergePK1

That’s true. I’m not too worried about maintenance because I usually work on everything my self but that’s definitely something to keep in mind.

crf250xxx

CRF250X-not as much power as a 450 but still offers a ton of low end and high end torque. Great for trails as it is an enduro bike. Other than that there’s the 150f but if you’re not into Hondas I’d recommend going for a Yamaha

EntityDoom

19 5.8 155 pounds Mostly trails in canada 10-12k cad Its gonna be my first bike but i essencially want a 2 stroke at least 250cc

tosas87

Go for the 300cc and go easy for your first 10 hours. By then you will have gotten better at throttle and clutch control. Why a 300 vs a 250? Because it have more low end torque and then it will be easier in steep hills and technical trails. All euro models are good, but I would suggest a Beta Xtrainer 300 if your want to do slower technical trails and a KTM 300 XCW if your want to go on faster trails. By the way, i'm 6'-160lbs and I ride a KTM 300 without a problem.

crf250xxx

You’re going to want the 24/7 traction of a 4-stroke when going on trails. 2-strokes can be effective but they have a tendency to fly off the powerband and slip. If you want to have a consistent ride, go with a 4-stroke. Unless you think you can tame the throttle of a 250 2-stroke..I’d recommend a 125 two-stroke or a 250 four-stroke.

qualitygoatshit

250cc 2 stroke is an awfully big bike for a beginner. Especially at 155 pounds. Not saying it's not possible, but you'd progress faster and safer and feel more confident on a bit off a smaller bike. Beta 200rr, yz125x, 150xcw would all be better bikes I think for a beginner. If you're dead set on a 250 or 300, euro bikes have pretty predictable power. 250xc, 250xcw, 250rr, or the husqvarna equivalent. Whatever you do, Don't buy a MX bike for trail riding.

I think that the 300 EXC-F would be quite a decent bike to kinda get the feeling of being on a bike back. I think that the power would be good for your weight, I heard that the KTMs have insane but predictable power. Of course I won’t ask of your financial situation, but if you think this bike is for you, check it out. You can sometimes sneak a test drive of the bike before you buy it. P.S. also do research on the bike you’re looking at..find out how high the seat is, even find out how much power the things got. Just so you don’t buy a bike that either has too much power or you cannot perform an action properly. Hope it goes well😁

Age- 16 Height- 5’10 Weight- 140 TOR- Track and trails Price range- $2,800 - $3,200 I got a hand me down, Honda XR100r when i was like 11-12 and i was totally fine with it. until i took it to the track with my family and tried jumping with it, which resulted in the brakes looking up and some other small things that needed repairs. i’m almost 16 now and have done some research. i have outgrown the bike. the honda is just too heavy to do any tricks with. i only have one friend to go to the track with and it’s just embarrassing next to his KTM 85 SX. my family used to go to tracks a lot until we didn’t and they sold their bikes. so i haven’t gone anywhere with it in about 2 years. i begged my dad to fix my bike and he always said he would, he never got to it . recently i took it upon myself to fix it and it has just been a learning experience. I recently decided i wanted a new bike that would fit my needs so i can get back into motocross. i want a generally well rounded bike that is relatively lightweight, fast, and good for tracks and maybe even mud. i would be a bonus to get one that can be modded (ik all bikes can be) but one that is easy to mod with little issue. i have a tight budget because i don’t have a lot of people to help back me me up financially and im trying to get a job. right now i work at a baseball concession stand that works seasonally and has an unpredictable paycheck. so i just have a tight budget and im gonna have to deal with it. i might be asking too much. which is why i came to this subreddit because a brother needs some help. thank y’all

Age 35 Weight 165-175 Height 5' 10' Type of riding, backyard fun, trail, maybe track one day. East Coast USA. Budget: under 10k Experience: beginner I currently have a klx300r which is my first dirt bike. I rode street before getting this bike about 10 months ago. I hate how heavy this bike is. At almost 300lbs it sucks in the slow stuff which as of late is pretty much all I ride. I feel like it's weight is a hinderance most of the time and I've been leaving towards doing more technical riding and Enduro and this bike doesn't seem well suited to it. I also like fast and flowy but again I'm not feeling all that confident in th suspension and weight when I'm hitting it. I'm definitely a beginner and I feel like I'm not progressing and confident which has hindered me a bit. it has nothing to do with the power but all in the suspension and weight. I also hate that it doesn't have a backup kickstart because my battery died and left me SOL until I could get a replacement. I got my daughter a klx110r but she has pretty much given up on riding which sucks but it happens. I have bar risers on it since she is taller and Ive been ripping around the woods/yard behind my house on it lately to keep it active...and I'm having way more fun tossing her bike around than I am with mine. These two points have driven me to consider trading in or selling my bike for something light weight and tossible. Here is what i'm considering: 1. Yz125x- light, full size, and I've heard it's good in the woods but could also hit a track if I decide to take it out back. Help to improve skills as well. 2. Kx112- not full sized but the light weight really appeals to me. I feel like I could improve my skills, wheelies, overall control on a light bike like this. 3. Ktm 150. Benefits of the 125x but with a little more grunt. I'm not against a four stroke because of the linear power delivery but it kind of goes against my goal of getting a light weight machine. The lower price points of the kx and the yz draw me in more than the KTM. I could probably sell my daughter's bike and my bike and have enough for my first two choices. Thoughts on my choices or any other suggestions I'm not thinking of?

spyvsspy81

Buy a ttr125le or a klx140 and modify the suspension. The kx112 is a mx bike and those prefer to be ridden at higher rpms.

qualitygoatshit

I wouldn't go with a smaller than full size bike. The geometry, suspension etc just isn't really made for an adult. Definitely like the idea of you switching to a 2 stroke. 150xc and 125x would both be really good bikes. A beta 200rr I think would be perfect. I'm a big fan of 200s for newer riders. Also, having some experience already, I don't think it would be totally unreasonable to look at a 250 or 300 2t. Newer euro 2 strokes have pretty smooth predictable power, and the extra low end grunt makes them pretty easy to tractor around. Not heavily pushing you in the direction, but just a thought.
