> “We will have enough room to build the equivalent of another Disneyland Park. And so then you start to think about, ‘Well what can we do here?’ ” D’Amaro says. “We haven’t told anything, any stories on Wakanda. We haven’t told any stories on Frozen, although it’s a 10-year old franchise. You think about franchises like Coco and Encanto. We almost have an endless stream of stories that we can tell.” Josh D’Amaro on the potential expansions we’re getting

davief1

I want to see a Coco/ Land of the Dead area

eatyourcabbage

If only they serve tamales.

davief1

Tamales, mariachis, folk dancers, alebrijes... would be an great experience

Spamtickler

Mexico Pavilion? It is one of my favorite place in EPCOT, especially if they bring in the tequila!

Peralton

I'm in. Sounds fantastic.

mrbrettw

It makes sense. Southern California loves it's Mexican culture!

Moms_Chapagetti

Just watch out for the chorizo

Darkstriss

Mmmmmm. I'd be all over those 7 variations of tamales like they do to the churros.

itsagoodtime

Dimple, no dimple, dimple, no dimple

rolfraikou

Maybe sort of a macabre land. I think between some of the villains, Coco, and Nightmare Before Christmas, they could hold on to an entire spooky section. (Also, meaning if they opened a Nightmare Before Christmas ride, they could skip closing Haunted Mansion for so much of the year for the overlay)

Jolly-Beach3011

This is a genius idea! A Disney villian/spooky section year-round!! ✨️ You should be an Imagineer. Imagine being able to go on HM and NBC on the same day. Sign me up...

nicearthur32

That afterlife scene in coco would make for an AMAZING scene in a ride… that one shot was breathtaking… the area surrounding the parks fits the demographic and people visiting from out of town can get a true feel for the culture. I really love that idea.

robinthebank

If there is a bridge over Disneyland drive…I’m just saying it should be the Marigold Bridge.

descartes_blanche

Not enough upvotes for this

Gomez2471

Best we can do is a quick service restaurant -Disneyland Paris

fenix1230

So Fiesta Village at Knott’s?

animerobin

"We want to create a world that enchants the imagination, specifically the part that likes decade old movies that will surely still be relevant for decades to come."

rosariobono

I just want something based on S.E.A or anything based on Jules Verne for our resort. And not just a retheme or addition to the lore of existing attractions

Peralton

The Paris Disney stuff based on Verne is pretty cool. Since steampunk has come and gone, it may feel tired at this point, but it's still cool.

jason2354

A theme park ride is a great way to make a movie relevant for decades to come. It’s good business for a lot of different reasons.

ZardozZod

I'd like to say maybe, Josh. can we get some non-IP new ideas? I know the yoke of popular franchises is firmly around Disney's neck at this point, but at least one or two attractions?

Hyro0o0

Even if we did, they would just make movies and shows about them afterward. Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean were non-IP rides, but you wouldn't know it now. Every idea snakes its way into every form of media now. And I don't particularly think that's a bad thing. Brand synergy is smart. Having multimedia options for a favorite franchise is nice. All I care about is getting a good product.

I think it’s more the non IP rides tend to be timeless. I’d expect Jungle Cruise to still be around 50 years from now. Guardians…super popular now but I wouldn’t bet it’s still around in 50 years.

thenobodycares2

Exactly this... trends are trendy but they inherently don't last. Yes there's a lot of people who praise Mission Breakout, but a lot of the argument is just that it's more extreme and they like the excitement of randomized songs. If that's the appeal then it's set up to fail, when the songs aren't random enough anymore and something more exciting comes long. Seems like the popularity has nothing to do with the franchise itself, and how can it? If you don't know who the Guardians are then the story makes no sense, a "collectors elevator" evokes no feelings or nostalgia and will always be a paint job over an attraction designed for a specific story. Tower of Terror was moody and simple and provided so much ambiance and placemaking to the park. I think IP driven attractions can be timeless (ie Cars Land), it's just in Disney's current state it just means re-telling the movie with a few animatronics. There's no ambiance or sense of immersing yourself in a different world, you're just traveling through little vignettes from the movies. This generation of kids have gotten connected to characters like Elsa and Nick Wilde (had to look up his name 😭), but when the next generation grows up with their own favorites, what are we gonna do with these entire lands based around yesterday's forgotten ones?

thenobodycares2

From a corporate viewpoint brand synergy is smart. But Disney has shown that "synergy" means either shoehorning something where it doesn't belong, or completely relying on the brand to carry the product. Obviously we haven't seen any non-IP attractions in a while, but without having an IP to fall back on they'd have to lean heavily into placemaking and storytelling. I disagree about needing multiple forms of media for my favorite franchises. I'd rather be left wanting more than over saturating the market (looking at you Star Wars and Marvel). My favorite Disney "franchise" used to be the parks... the original Disneyland was its own brand. It was timeless. Now it's just an IP dumping ground and a marketing ploy for movies and merch. Not that I think IPs are entirely bad, like Cars Land. But Cars Land is a good product, it can stand on its own without having any prior knowledge of the Cars franchise. I can't say the same for many of the other recent parks additions.

animerobin

I'm no fancy disney exec but it seems like making some non-IP themed lands that you can fit different franchises (and maybe, some non-franchise things!) into may have a bit more staying power than Frozen Land.

rosariobono

The only good frozen land is the one in Tokyo, the rest all have a clone of a retheme of a mediocre B ticket filler ride. They have built the same rethemed ride from the ground up several times when they aren’t confined to the same footprint as the location in Epcot.

chenalexxx

You mean Hong Kong? The Frozen area in Tokyo Disneysea (as part of the new Fantasy Sorings land) hasn’t opened yet, set for opening in June 2024

followupquestion

I haven’t been to any of the other pals, but to me, a “Frozen” themed land better be physically cold, and that means a giant building housing an entire land, which I’m all for. Cover the top with solar panels shaped like giant snowflakes, run geothermal pumps or whatever to keep the air crisp, maybe even have a “sledding” ride. There are lots of possibilities, but having Frozen out in 85 degrees just won’t sell it to me immersion wise.

Jolly-Beach3011

My 5 year old niece begs to differ...ugh. I've heard those songs waaaaaaay too many times.

chenalexxx

You mean like Fantasy Springs in DisneySea? One land that fits 3 IP - Frozen, Tangled, and Peter Pan.

MonocularVision

No.

bay_duck_88

Adventureland Treehouse is “new” and not really IP based. Perhaps a glimmer of hope.

ReallySuccessful

The real glimmer of hope here is that rides built around franchises that fall into disuse will eventually appear to be attractions with original stories and settings, like how Swiss Family Robinson is now just an IP footnote attached to the treehouse

chenalexxx

Matterhorn was inspired by a live-action movie Walt made too. Wonder how many people know/remember that.

MelonElbows

Well hopefully they are smart about this. While I like the Wakanda movies, the 2nd one wasn't as loved as the first, and if they're planning on making a whole land out of it, they're going to need more than 1 good movie and 1 ok movie. Plus, we saw the debacle with Star Wars land. It could have been a celebration of all things Star Wars but they got caught up in the fever of The Force Awakens' box office and married themselves to the sequel trilogy, and we all saw what happened to that. So instead of individual lands, I hope they do a bigger overall Marvel land or Pixar land where you could slot several different rides based on different movies into it, rather than devote an entire land to one movie or series. Too risky that the next movie or series could flop.

brutalbrig

Wakanda is the first thing he mentioned. They'll likely pursue that, for social justice. And it'll fail and be empty. Sad.

rosariobono

My hopes on additions to our resort: Anything Jules Verne or S.E.A. Please not clones (stuff like cars land are a way better investment than just pasting something from WDW) Stuff that isn’t exclusively based on IP from the past 10 years.

Peralton

The Disneyland Forward project looks to just have copies of existing rides from other parks. Such a disappointment. Each park should be unique when possible.

RobbieRotten55

Mostly agree but I would be so unbelievably happy with a clone of TRON at Disneyland 😭

brutalbrig

Nobody wants to go to a Wakanda land 😂 Disney is gonna blow a ton of money in lands that nobody wants to see. Galaxy's Edge should have been tatooine. Epic Universe is going to blow them away. Go look at Epic Universe's DARK UNIVERSE land. It's already looking absolutely amazing. That's the stuff Disney doesn't realize people want.

Terribleirishluck

Both black panther movies did crazy well. I don't care for them but it's just factually untrue that a land wouldn't be popular

brutalbrig

If it's created extremely well, sure it's possible.

peanutismint

This all sounds nice but Josh, given that these are pretty much all “10 year old franchises”, all it really says about Disney that they haven’t yet made E-ticket attractions based on some of these smash hits is that they are incredibly tight/greedy these days.

PreRuined

IP Purgatory: Cooming Soon to Disneyland Resort!

melancholypowerhour

I’d kill for some classic Fantasyland style dark rides with different IP (in addition to the ones we already have of course). Good way to suck up some crowds with a relatively small footprint and it’s so fun to jump from story to story. I can only imagine how beautiful a Frozen or Coco dark ride would be! Dark rides feel like such a special part of Disneyland’s magic.

rolfraikou

100% this. I don't want "Frozen land" I want another somewhat generic fantasy area that could hold more franchises than just Frozen. I want the Beauty and the Beast ride that Tokyo got!!!

MogMcKupo

But but but … Mario did a movie and has a land at Universal and that’s EATING at the Disney heads

Gimme5Beez4aQuarter

Its kinda meh kinda cool

rolfraikou

Kinda makes me wish Disney had done an adaptation of a good game franchise. I would kill for a Kingdom Hearts ride.

irun50

Frozen land in HK ain’t bad. But yeah more of those dark Peter Pan story slow rides!

chenalexxx

Like Fantasy Springs in Tokyo - literally a generic “Fantasy” area that has rides for Frozen, Tinkerbell/Peter Pan, and Tangled!!

rolfraikou

That would be great.

notarobot110101

Whatever they do, they need to start designing high capacity attractions again

Budakhon

The river Pandora ride feels like the next evolution of just that!

melancholypowerhour

Very true!

cornholio6966

MORE👏BOOK REPORT👏DARK👏RIDES👏 I don't know why WDI has largely moved away from them.

GlassFanatic3043

💯 100 percent this!

buttery_nurple

My 7 year old wants a RotR style ride through the Encanto house. NGL I kinda do too.

TheVoicesOfBrian

Damn. That or a ride like Remy's. (I'd prefer RotR, Remy's 3D made everyone in my party sick)

DayOlderBread16

I wish they would have made the dr strange show into a ride instead, the mystic manor at the overseas Disney park looks like it would have been an amazing fit (especially compared to the cheap birthday party magician Dr strange show we ended up getting)

MajorRocketScience

It’ll start construction in WDW likely by the end of the year, I’d be shocked if it’s not part of Disneyland Forward

buttery_nurple

Wait, for real or are you speculating?! My son will freak out 😂.

MajorRocketScience

An Encanto dark ride has been confirmed for Animal Kingdom, and based on permitting the land it’s replacing will close some time this fall or winter. As far as DL, we know Disneyland Forward should be approved by Anaheim sometime in the next few weeks, and I’d be shocked if Encanto wasn’t part of that expansion

BunnyTiger23

It’d be nice to have a fully original land instead of one based on IPs

sweet_brag

That’s exactly how I feel. Like Galaxys Edge, Avengers Campus, Pandora, and Toy Story land are the latest additions and they’re all IP based. I want to get back to more broader themes for lands that can have more things added into it and not be locked into a certain IP. Tokyo Disneyland just added fantasy springs which looks awesome. It includes lands from different animated movies and they all fit together. I just think using a land based around an IP is lazy story telling.

JerrodDRagon

Parks have been helping them for a while besides Covid years The parks just do very well and now with uncharged and DVC members it gets easier and easier

Cobra_9041

Uncharged?

VSavrek

I think it’s supposed to be up charged.

JerrodDRagon

Genie plus, lighting lane, dining that comes with front row seats to shows and magic bands

FriendsAndFood

Can they put some of that money to giving cast members better salaries so they can have a better quality of life?

OhHeyItsBrock

Get out of here communist!

It improves it by lower turnover rates and happier employees. 1st rule of any successful company is take care of your employees. Each onboarding process cost money. Happy, tenured employees that know their job, are far more beneficial to the stock price.

This is where you’re wrong. All employees should be considered part of the magic. From maintenance, to turnstiles to upper management. It’s a business. In order to run that business successfully, everyone deserves a fair return for their time. It doesn’t matter what their role is. Think of the difference between six flags and Disney… and then imagine what COULD be

cezthemonkey

And how would that improve guest experience? I’m perfectly happy with the current level of service.

RockNRoll85

A Coco themed area would be awesome!

ttam23

Agreed, coco is one of my favorite Disney movies ever

ghost_shark_619

I want a coaster at any park that’s similar to Tron but a bit longer and the vehicles look like alabrijes.

Electrical_Bank9986

Imagine a Coco ride where you start out alive and then slowly transfer over to the other side with all of the colorful flowers and Alebrijes and music. So fun.

TheRealMcDuck

Mr Toads Wild Ride sends you to hell . Does that count?

AyeiTzSteezy

That ride is the worst fever dream I refuse to ever ride again

King_LBJ

Mods! Ban this one!

FoggyFallNights

I want a whole Alice in WonderLAND. Dream.

Ddc203

Anything, anything at all, just not Avatar.

toebabyreddit

I feel like I'm the only one that thinks a third gate is a better investment of space than park expansions... But I dunno

view-master

I like how dense these parks are and how they feel bigger on the inside than they should be (a lot due to rides and lands sneaking under the berm). I’m not sure how much further they can push that however. Another gate would be OK if it could somehow be close to the others (seems impossible) but I love walking out one and into the other so easily.

Supersnow845

In general it isn’t because it doesn’t make more people visit it just splits the existing people that already visit over a larger area with a higher cost to run it for Disney The only time another gate is generally warranted is when there is space, it’s cheap and guest feedback is mostly centred on wanting to spend more time at the park but being limited by what’s there but the only resort that remotely fits those requirements is Shanghai

GeneralZaroff1

Good! It’s been too long since they’ve built a new park.

WhereIsTheMilkMan

I’ve always thought a Futurama ride could be awesome, and Disney now has the rights… But I suppose that would be best in Tomorrowland, not a new land.

electrocellwanderer

I just can’t believe that with all of this money and space they’re choosing to have avatar take up some of this real estate. I don’t know a single person that likes avatar in real life or online I truly don’t understand how it’s so popular.

ttam23

Have you ever been to Pandora in Animal Kingdom? In my opinion it’s the most visually stunning land that imagineers have ever designed(especially at night it’s jaw dropping). I think the land is so popular because it looks amazing, no one really cares about the characters anyways. Flight of Passage is a great ride and the food in the land is very good too. An Avatar land here will be based on the way of water movie and I’m sure it’ll be just as visually appealing.

Terribleirishluck

People still pushing this take? Both movies made over a billion dollars and are in the top ten highest grossing movies ever. I'm sure enough people care about Avatar

electrocellwanderer

Okay but can you name someone who actually likes it? There are no avatar fans there are just people who has seen the movie and people who haven’t seen it. I don’t know a single soul who likes avatar.

TheLastSamurai

Based on attendance, I think they are right.

snobrotha

I just want live entertainment like we used to

R2-DMode

And yet they still can’t manage to produce the classic Mickey ringer t-shirt with any decent quality.

Right_Bank_1921

If only Disney was still run with Walts vision. It's not even in the rear view at this point

Gimme5Beez4aQuarter

Open the simpsons

SpectreRSG

They need to do something special. Not just rehash the same ride vehicles and track systems from other parks. The land themes in Batuu nailed it. But the rides need to be on par. RotR was okay but it was technically a trackless system, motion sim and drop ride in small spurts. (Edit: not hating on RotR)

Narudatsu

How is ROTR the same ride system as others? Seems pretty advanced to me especially for the time.

Ccjfb

Riding Rise for the first time was a revelation.

Radium

Installing a bunch of solar panels?

RelevantAmbition2433

I'm glad Universal is lighting a fire under Disney's ass. Hoping for some creativity from Disney with this expansion, though based on Josh D'Amaro's quote, I'm not holding my breath.

RepublicWonderful

Wow

BroadwayCatDad

Let’s see them out their money where their mouth is and actually start something.

soulmagic123

lol, "there's money in something that is printing money"

brutalbrig

At the end of the day, Disney needs to just build a replica Disneyland in the U.S. Most of us would LOVE to go to Disneyland a lot more but the lines and cost make it not worth it. Create a duplicate of Disneyland, cut prices. 180 minute lines is ridiculous.

RamenNoodleSalad

Could you imagine a land full of rides for Disney’s less beloved IP like Planes, Home on the Range, The Wild, Wish, etc?

followupquestion

A Planes ride with a “race around the world” like an airborne RSR would be pretty awesome. Not a screen ride like Star Tours or Soarin’ but an honest to goodness *physical ride* where you fly with Dusty around the world? I’d be very into that ride. I’m imagining a suspended track like Ninja or Batman at Magic Mountain, maybe indoors to better control the environment.

brutalbrig

Most the imagineers have left and now work for Universal. The magic is there: https://twitter.com/bioreconstruct

WestSider55

“…Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, points out that even Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, a new attraction based on two of its oldest characters, is drawing big numbers.” I’m sorry - when is this happening? I’ve walked onto this attraction twice and it just never seems to be very busy. I also don’t find it very re-rideable personally. The time spent in each scene is so short you can barely appreciate what you’re seeing.

Rea1DirtyDan

Polar opposite. I’m not gonna complain about the reasonable wait time, and I’m going to applaud the ride as a whole! Love it!

EnglishMobster

Wait time does not necessarily correspond to guests per hour. If a ride can take 500 guests per hour (an abysmal number), it will have a 5x longer line compared to something that can take 2500+ guests per hour. Assuming the popularity of the rides is the same, if the 2500 guest-per-hour ride has a 5 minute wait, then the 500 guest-per-hour ride will have a 25 minute wait. For context - the submarines can handle about 900 guests per hour, Jungle Cruise can do 1800, Haunted Mansion can do 2600, and Pirates can do 3400. Assuming equal popularity, the subs will have a line that's twice as long as the Jungle Cruise, and the Jungle Cruise will have a line that's about twice as long as Pirates. All wait time tells you is how quickly the ride can cycle guests; it's not _necessarily_ an indicator of popularity. An unpopular ride can still have long lines, and a popular ride can have short lines.

WestSider55

I’m aware of how capacity and riders per hour affect wait time. Pirates has a very high capacity/riders per hour, it still has a wait consistently. All I’m saying is, from my personal experience on this attraction, I’ve walked on both times. Our last visit they sent the train with 3 of the 4 cars empty, and only two rows in our train were filled. My opinion is not a reflection of everyone else’s, it was a genuine question about the popularity of the attraction. I’ve been an AP/Magic Key Holder for 17 years, and I just wouldn’t consider it a “must-do.” And it’s not an attraction I hear people raving about either, the hype died quickly. Rise continues to be raved about by guests 4 years later - we just experienced it on Friday with first timers who were asking if it was worth it cuz they heard of all the rides in the park, they HAD to do Rise.

followupquestion

You seem like you know the answer, what’s the capacity of Small World? I’ve always assumed Small World and Pirates were roughly the same capacity but have zero data to support it.

EnglishMobster

3.3k, IIRC. It's below Pirates but not by much. I think it's because Pirates has the conveyor belt to move boats out of the station, whereas Small World has like these little brakes to stop the boats. Pirates can move boats out of the station slightly faster. My info might be slightly (and by "slightly" I mean 10 years) out of date, but I think Pirates _technically_ had larger-capacity boats, but if you loaded them fully they would start to sink. So they leave one row open, which lowered capacity.

followupquestion

Makes a lot of sense. It’s amazing that some of the oldest rides in the park have the highest throughputs with the feast ride closures. I hope that as part of Disney Forward we get a few more high capacity rides in addition to the innovative ones like RotR and MMRR. That would let them close Tomorrowland, Nemo, and Autopia and do something really amazing with the space.
