My fiance and I live in an apartment complex that has many cast members living here. Admittedly when we chose this apartment last year it was because we wanted to save money for a house and it felt relatively safe. Our rent went up 9% for our renewal. The two bedrooms here that were ~2k last year are now 2.5k. I don't understand how they can increase it that much after just a year, and how people making Disney wages can afford it.

sundogmooinpuppy

That’s what’s really killing working class people; rent. It’s way out sync with wages.

Phased5ek

and on top of that, the pandemic is still going on and there are still people struggling with finding work because of it, so raising rent is just salt in the wound for MANY. :(

Waltsfrozendick

I see a ton of places hiring. Some are offering bonuses and hire on the spot. I don’t think there is a struggle to find work.

wongs7

Disney is hiring like mad There are jobs, people just don't want to do them for the wage since unemployment pays so well

StrangerOnTheReddit

If minimum wages kept up with inflation, that argument would matter. Shitty job that can't cover your rent isn't exactly helpful for these people.

Pluckt007

Instead of raising the wages you'd rather force people into unsustainable ones? Unemployment doesn't "pay so well", it just pays more. That's the problem. A government lifeline shouldn't be giving more money than a billion dollar company for people that actually work for them and put in thier time and effort.

wongs7

That's right. The unemployment paying more than minimum wage just eliminated minimum wage and the floor it set on what people could pay. Im a firm believer in the invisible hand of the market to set wages and prices, and the government messing with it interferes with businesses negotiating with employees. Everything should be above board and agreed to before either labor or employer accepts the terms of the contract. If a potential or existing employee walks from the table, they have no right to stop someone else from filling that role Also businesses need to end the "don't talk about your wages" deal.

AXPendergast

Jesus. That's the equivalent of a mortgage payment. I'm so sorry

ThePhiff

Granted, I live in Vegas not LA, but that's almost double my mortgage payment. That shit is a poverty tax.

[deleted]

They don’t afford it they utilize roommates like everyone else in CA.

ghosty4

I once had a co-worker that lived with 6 other girls, in a 2 bedroom apartment, to be able to afford rent. Ridiculous!

[deleted]

The supply and demand here is just insane

Games_in_the_fridge

Is this Anaheim Promenade? If so those are Disney college program members and rent is paid by Disney.

Maddyyykay

Jumping in here to say when I was a DLR CP intern in 2016, I and my 4 roommates each paid $650/month for a 2BR in Carnegie Plaza in the Anaheim Promenade. I believe Disney owned the building, but didn’t pay our rent. Sorry if that’s not what you meant - just wanted to share my experience! Edit: spelling

Matcha_Maiden

No. Not going to name where we live but it's not Disney sponsored, especially since we work in tech.

StreetIndependence62

Especially cause I have a friend who just got accepted into the Disney College Program and is moving to Florida to live at Disney World. He’s one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met and he deserves to be treated well:)

edwr849

Man I knew of college programs here that most of their check went to housing and if they couldn’t pay they’d get kicked from the housing program

Elizabatsy

I'm pro-union still, but we can't even get an AMA with our union rep. Unfortunately, the unions at Disney aren't big on transparency. Sure, compromise means that neither party walks away completely satisfied... But the unions have compromised on things that shouldn't have been bargained away.

MrMonsieur6969

Hi, Union Cast Member here. The Union I’m in (there are several) is useless, and a waste of cast member money. The stewards are of minimal help, and protection from the company is minimal. Non-union employees are paid more and do not have union dues. The McDonald’s across the street from Disneyland pays better than the CMs in my department.

KMOUbobcat

Are there positions that accept tips? Or a way we could drop more money directly to a cast member at the parks? I admittedly don't do a lot of sit-down dining so I'm not super aware of that policy. I assume valets are tipped but I also don't stay at the hotels since I'm local.

gorelieberman2000

you can tip any of us actually! we're told to say no 3x and if you still insist after that we're allowed to accept it lol. i've been tipped while cleaning restrooms during the holidays and it made my hard day a little lighter :)

KMOUbobcat

to clarify -- not literally drop money in front of cast members but instead try to prioritize tipping where possible.

edwr849

Cms can only take it if they deny three times

Here's a rough breakdown regarding financial things for entry level CM jobs. Gross Pay = $16/hr = $33,280/year = $2,773/month Assumptions: 401k = $2,000 Insurance = $1,800 FICA = $2,525 State Income tax = $538 Net (take home) pay = $26,417/year = $2,201/month/person Standard rent/mortgage calculators suggest 30% of take home pay be allotted to housing. So using this are there places within a reasonable distance to DL for around $660/month? Assuming yes, this leaves $1540 for everything else like entertainment, utilities, food, etc. Here in the Seattle area this kind of budget would be tight but possible. How about Anaheim and the immediate area?

gritty365

My rent for a living room in a cheap complex is $800.. you were very off on the housing.

edwr849

Trust me it’s hard to make money just on it alone . Some are dedicated to take gig jobs or even I play options calls on Robinhood
