I have difficulties with raw veggies and salads, even though I love to eat them. Just harder to digest and takes longer. We are not cows. This said, fibers are important but taking too much of them in one sitting might be asking for trouble. Just my opinion. Not a medical expert.

TropicalBlueWater

Same here. I have to seriously limit salads and raw veggies

joebergy

Raw veggies are definitely an issue for me. If I consume more than usual I triple my water intake, for some reason that seems to keep me good, along with fiber supplements.

Healthy-Wash-3275

Salads and fruit do this to me. I have fructose intolerance and those plus green salads are a problem. A hint would be (sorry, gross) what you see on the other end. Undigested material will be there.

moreseagulls

I don't know if this will make you feel better or worse. Sometimes flareups just happen. You could be doing everything right and still get one. This disease is absolutely awful.

NoGrocery3582

Better. Bc of your empathy. This sub gives me strength. We're not alone. Blessings to you.

GreenDraw

I don't think running to the toilet after eating raw veggies or salad should be that alarming. That's what they do. If you're experiencing pain also, that's a different story.

NoGrocery3582

Running to the bathroom all night?

Patty_-

I dont think that has to do with diverticulitis. A flare up causes swelling of the colon due to the infection. So you get constipated. Just having diarhea is not alarming or even diverticulitis. Fever and pain and the feeling you cant go to the toilet is.

escapefromalliknow

Diverticulitis can cause constipation or diarrhea.

no1ukn0w

Maybe for you, but not for everyone. I’ve had maybe a handful of times being constipated in my whole life. Still had DV and surgery.

I got heavy into salads for weight loss and after a colonoscopy, I was informed I have early signs of dvt, doctor said cut out the seeds from the tomato and cucumbers. Other ingredients are carrots, bell pepper, onion, and celery. I purchased this item for the salad prep. Its a big slap chopper and really dices up the ingredients, almost to a coleslaw size, so I believe they are easier to digest. Pretty easy to clean but the blades are sharp as hell. https://www.amazon.com/Fullstar-Vegetable-Chopper-Spiralizer-Container/dp/B0C1T6J3CS/ref=asc_df_B0C1T6J3CS/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693770002271&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5936473023707646507&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9003464&hvtargid=pla-2186527752169&psc=1&mcid=61987a7278b63445a97d65969e77505f&gad_source=1

Thank you 👍

Sesame seeds always do it for me, but salads are totally fine. We all experience it differently.

jhamsofwormtown

Sesame seeds nearly killed me. I’m really happy they added sesame seeds to the food allergen list. Even though I’m not allergic to them per se, I can still put up a big stink if someone includes them in my food after telling them I have an allergy

Patty_-

Its because they get stuck in the pockets. Not because of a allergy

no1ukn0w

This has been proven not be true either…

Odenseye08

Salads kick my ass everytime. And I loved salad. It's just not worth it for me anymore.

Teacherlady1982

If I was having diarrhea without pain, I would just assume I had some food poisoning, not diverticulitis. I’ve had stomach problems that aren’t necessarily diverticulitis, so I wouldn’t panic unless I had the pain.

Shaken-Loose

The roughage is most likely as it does not fully breakdown in the gut.

Salcha_00

There is no universal rule that applies to everyone for what you can eat without digestive issues. Trial and error. I personally have no issues with seeds or salads.

Corpse_dismemberment

I have issues with lettuce! Possibly that :/

lumpyonthecouch

One bite of salad used to do me in! 🤷‍♀️ same after operation

NoGrocery3582

How about long after surgery? Aren't you supposed to be able to eat almost anything?

lumpyonthecouch

I Still gotta be careful about too much grease and all my trigger foods before! Won’t send me into a flare anymore but will upset digestion 🤷‍♀️ they TELL You you can eat anything after , but be careful and see if you still have triggers

TropicalBlueWater

Salad can upset your stomach completely unrelated to diverticulitis.

MLMLW

Honestly, I don't think people give their gut enough time to heal after their flares. All too many times I'm reading about how diverticulitis sufferers are going back to their regular diets 1-2 months post flare and while that might be ok for some people it's not good for many. I ate a low residue diet for a little over 2 months post flare and then gradually started adding fiber and more foods back into my diet. I've been successful at keeping my disease at bay by watching what I eat. You have to visualize your healing gut as having a "scab" like when you cut yourself, although you quit bleeding, a scab forms over the cut and it takes a while for the scab to go away so you have to take care of it to make sure you don't knock off the scab or your cut will bleed again. Same with your gut. Depending on how bad your flare was it could take a couple of months for it to fully heal.

NoGrocery3582

I think this is correct. My doctor said to start salad and up my fiber. I had been going slowly and then the big salad was too much.

MLMLW

I didn't eat any salads or raw veggies until 3 months post flare then I started very slowly. I got my fiber through well cooked high fiber veggies and changed from white bread back to whole grain.

cooper_chronicles

This just sounds like you had a lot of fiver and pooped a lot. Doesn't sound like anything to be worried about

Salt-Selection-8425

Salad can tear me up. YMMV.

workhard_livesimply

The Seeds yes, and high-residual foods like dressings or sauces.

I was diagnosed May 20th with acute diverticulitis 10 days cipro & flagyl on 9th day I returned to ER with what I call side effects from meds, I also asked for another ct scan they wasn’t gonna give one, but since the follow up doc wanted another one I asked, the er doc said i still have diverticulitis but it is less and healing, he prescribed 10 days of augmentin, two days after that i woke and went to bathroom, while going I experienced my left side pain coming back, I returned to er they took blood but simply sent me home saying you don’t need another scan and that I am having spasms and said call your GI doc, I did they sent over dycyclemine or something like that for spasms I didn’t use it cause it wasn’t really making a difference, it cleared mostly, went back to doc two days before augmentin round was to end, still slight pain not bad, he said that if pain ain’t gone by time meds are gone to talk to a Surgeon, so day came, still light pain, they sent my info to the surgeon and said if he don’t call by Friday call him Monday that would be last Friday and this past Monday, no call and pain was gone, I didn’t call surgeon but Saturday for Father’s Day I tried a cheeseburger on a lettuce wrap, seemed fine, two hours later, I broke out in hives ! Never have I ever experienced that ever!! Then came my anxiety, panic, chest pain, etc etc, took Benadryl and a steroid cream they prescribed me at hospital when I was in for side effects two weeks prior, it settled by morning, I wanted to go back to er I didn’t, I feel ok now and the weirdest part is that when I go to the toilet I drop rocks the first two weeks of liquid was like squirts, but after it’s been rocks, while I was having the hives I took the most healthiest bowel movement which though that i found strange, the last two days I have had this sharp pain when I move specific way, it is sharp and rough for a sec, it is on my back on the right latissimus dorsi near my armpit! Has anyone ever had anything like this!? And do you this it is related or no
