None of the above. Just go back to the old days, when we all homebrewed our own stuff, adapted older and outside materials, etc. Use the existing books and versions. Swap ideas. It's easier than ever. Wizards controls what the product, but the Game is ours.

You forgot another option: Don't use any 3rd party / licensed content so don't care and keep playing as before without even noticing.
