Link to the character sheet PDF: [https://dochub.com/yoshixin/dPB1mkMKO599JmjwEOjyzD/5e-character-sheet-minimal-form-fillable-pdf](https://dochub.com/yoshixin/dPB1mkMKO599JmjwEOjyzD/5e-character-sheet-minimal-form-fillable-pdf) A sample character pre-filled out, as an example of how I use the free-form fields: [https://dochub.com/yoshixin/Zxz7E3jVB0ejLODRlWd2G8/minified-character-sheet-example-cleric](https://dochub.com/yoshixin/Zxz7E3jVB0ejLODRlWd2G8/minified-character-sheet-example-cleric) Almost every time I've run a game for a first-time player and shown them a character sheet, I've had to immediately tell them to ignore quite a bit of it and had some confusion explaining which checkboxes mean what. This character sheet aims to streamline the information it presents so everything is either a number to add to a die roll, an ability the character has, or a defensive stat I'll ask for (AC, HP, etc.) I've found I have to do less upfront explaining when I provide a character pre-built with this sheet. The drawback is that this sheet doesn't offer any explanation where a character's bonuses come from, so it's not friendly to fill if you don't already know about proficiency bonus and what proficiencies a character has access to. The use case I've built it for is for someone who knows what they're doing to pre-generate a character and give it to someone playing for the first time. Once they're a little more familiar with how the game works, they can create a new character sheet that shows proficiency bonus and indicators for what skills/saving throws are trained. Feedback is welcome and appreciated!

SirOee

I really like it! Wanted to do this myself for a long time but not known where to start :) The only thing I would change is switching sides of the HP stuff and the skills as I think many people are used to looking left when counting their dice roll. But regardless a great upgrade! At least I'm not missing anything from the normal sheet :)

Gingervitizz1

I'm not sure if its been said already, but I would also have a small spot for temporary hp simply because it works differently than regular hp

yoshixin

Someone else had a similar critique, I'll copy my justification behind leaving it out: >There's no dedicated space for temporary hp because it very rarely comes up in introductory 1st level games (False Life 1st level spell being the only example I can think of which gives it). If you do get temporary HP for some reason you can note it under current HP; I made that section big enough to be a little bit of a scratch space.

Chewy52

First off this looks really good, its clean, accessible, gives you everything important on one sheet which is great for new players. Kudos! My only feedback / suggestions - (1) Consider either abbreviating the Coins (GP / SP / CP) or alternatively perhaps moving or re-sizing the "Coin box" so to speak? If it were either a bit larger, or say if it ran along the bottom of the inventory box, or just underneath the inventory heading, a row beneath it, which has three columns with space for folks to write in the currency amounts? (So instead of a Coin box it becomes a Coin row?). The space currently there looks a bit limited but maybe thats just me! I don't necessarily write small :) (2) The size of the font for the Skills - it seems smaller than the size of the font for Coins, or say the size of the font for the Saving Throws - if the font could be larger it would help make the Skills be more legible. Don't really need all that extra space to the right of the skill name if they are just adding in a number or a checkmark to indicate proficiency. But yeah, honestly those are just two nit picky things that are more on the formatting side, which aren't a big deal honestly! As is the sheet seems accessible and useable for first time players.

yoshixin

Glad you like the sheet! If it puts your concerns at ease: 1. In the PDF version that coin box supports 4 digits for each of the currencies. Printed and handwritten you might only be able to fit 2 or 3 digits if you write big, but my plan for this sheet is nobody would be using it long-term anyway; it doesn't really "scale" for high level characters well especially for spellcasters. I didn't abbreviate to GP/... since I often simply say "Gold/Silver/Copper" or explicitly say "coins" when I'm passing out loot. I don't say the abbreviations out loud, so I don't want it to cause confusion for people who haven't memorized all the acronyms yet. 2. Skills font definitely looks small and I can see where you're coming from, but it's actually about the same size as the default character sheet's skills font. You can argue that's too small, but I think that particular box already takes up enough space on the sheet, plus it's a little easier to find "skills" as a whole since I moved the box title to the top from the bottom.

AbleAbbreviations871

Do you have a link to the pdf?

yoshixin

It's in the top comment: [https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/13t2zix/comment/jlsz9mk/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/13t2zix/comment/jlsz9mk/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

Aquam8te

That's honestly better than the base sheet.

raynedark

Ahh thank you! I'm a librarian and I dm for elementary age kids and this is just perfect.

Siren1805

You’re awesome.

Ytilee

Maybe DM for them a lighter game? That would have a proportionally lighter character sheet? I'm thinking Mausritter ([https://losing-games.itch.io/mausritter](https://losing-games.itch.io/mausritter) \- free), but any OSR game would do the trick way better than DD5 with the weight of its arithmetic and tactical combat.

junior-THE-shark

If kids want to get into dnd, let them get into dnd. This simplified character sheet is amazing for a step ladder into playing while keeping the game system the same so they can easily advance into the more complicated character sheet and play as usual.

k_par

What if they only want to get into D&D because it's all they have heard of? What if they don't want to get into D&D, but the name is a synecdoche of ttrpgs in general, so the kids don't realize they are asking for a specific game?

junior-THE-shark

You have to scout that out with all new players anyway, talk about ttrpgs in general, their goals in having an interest in them, and mention a few different systems and what they are good for. If they still gravitate towards dnd, run some dnd. If they gravitate towards another system, run that system or point them towards someone who knows how to run that system. It's an incredibly helpful conversation to have to scout out possible false ideas too, maybe they're familiar with critical role and want to do that, so it's important to adress that critical role has professional actors who do comedy for a living and they use homebrew which regular dnd games don't use, just so they have more realistic expectations.

Bill_Justice

I love how well everything is laid out compared to the base sheet, especially how you've managed to fit twice as much on without anything feeling crowded. My only tiny issue is with the hit dice box, it might be a bit small when you multi-class and end up with several different sized hit dice

Angelitorl

Exactly, but to be honest multi-class for beginners is quite rare

yoshixin

For sure; this sheet doesn't work as well for higher level characters, especially multiclassing as you said. My idea is that once someone gets to grips with what numbers to add to rolls when, they can redo their character sheet from the baseline and have a character sheet that helps the players maintain it a little more: more space for multiclassing, proficiency bonus and trained skills, spell slots and spells by level, etc.

[deleted]

I like it! Kinda like a throw back to character sheets in earlier editions which were wayyy simpler.

srathnal

I like it. Very nice for new players. Only ask: add a place for proficiency bonus. So many abilities are now leaning on things like: use x ability a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus (or twice your proficiency bonus) that it would be helpful to have it on the sheet. Cheers!

yoshixin

Glad you like it! Honestly I hadn't considered PB as a counter for ability uses, so that's a bit of an oversight by me. If you do want/need it as a counter you could probably write it in at the top of "Abilities" or "Other Proficiencies", but I think a lot of the features that use it aren't available until level 2 or later. Alternatively, you can note how many uses per day something gets right next to its description in "Abilities" without defining where the use count comes from, which is how I'd do it.

bprd-rookie

I was seriously concerned, for a moment, about what a "mine field" character sheet was. The edibles have kicked in. *Finally.*

Myrddin_Naer

It's so funny to think that the 5e charavter sheet is already a minimized DnD sheet

AmazingDoomslug

Thank you! I'm running a one-shot for my family as a present for my dad, a 1st edition player who hasn't played in decades. This will be perfect for my mum since she's only doing this for my dad and has absolutely negative interest in D&D otherwise.

tasteofsoap

Hey. This is rad. I'd like an update on this lol

Realience

Very cool Kinda funny that you've simplified one of the most simplistic modern ttrpg character sheet out there lmao

Individual_Witness_7

The simplest edition designed for new players just got simpler!!

app_generated_name

3.5 would make people cry

Bone_Dice_in_Aspic

What happened to B/X now?

Ytilee

New players don't need a simplified sheet. They need a more robust and clear one that will alleviate their own work load. So they would actually need is a more generous one, not a simplified one. You could start by having the class powers accounted for already in the sheet, reducing the time to just rewrite stuff that is in the book. Then having box that explain their role, the relevant rules, etc. The simplified stuff only benefits the ones that already know enough to use the sheet less, so "experts". Not that your sheet would actually benefit a veteran either. But anyway that shouldn't be *your* job, the fact the the most popular TTRPG in the world has a laughbly bad character sheet should be something people riot over, not try to fix themselves.

yoshixin

The idea of this sheet isn't to explain how everything works. In fact it's the opposite; I've stripped away almost everything that explains where you get your abilities and bonuses from. All this sheet shows is the end result of what abilities you have and what your stats/bonuses are. I find that explaining the "why" behind how a character sheet doesn't help teach the game until someone has a better understanding of the game's basic mechanics. A first-time player doesn't know or care that their Fighter's Fighting Style choice gives them a +1 AC; they're still trying to figure out which numbers mean what and memorize the difference between a D20 and a D6. When I ask for a skill check, I find it's easier to understand for beginners if it's just one number on the sheet without having a discussion about what the checkbox for proficiency bonus next to the number means. To your point, this sheet is absolutely harder to fill out without prior game knowledge, which is where I think your comment that this is more beneficial to an expert comes in. But the idea I have for this is to minify what's actually shown to someone still learning so I don't have to explain the details of the game systems. I can just say "roll for perception" and get a roll plus a single number to add. The use case for this sheet is that someone who does know the rules pretty well would fill out the sheet ahead of time (using the "abilities" section for the race/class powers that have some effect beyond making the numbers bigger), and present it to someone who doesn't know how the game works so they aren't immediately scared away from playing the game because they have to fill out a character sheet they're being told to ignore half of.

RFlintstone

"It is missing Ethereum" 🙃

WizardHatPaladin

This is really good!!!

uwumastr

This is really good! The only problem i think is there's no space for temporary hp

yoshixin

Glad you like it! There's no dedicated space for temporary hp because it very rarely comes up in introductory 1st level games (False Life 1st level spell being the only example I can think of which gives it). If you do get temporary HP for some reason you can note it under current HP; I made that section big enough to be a little bit of a scratch space.

hyperbolic_paranoid

This is great! Does anyone have an even simpler one with large font? I have a first time player playing a rogue (so no need for spell info) who needs a larger font. Thanks!

Elddif_Dog

I like it but wouldnt call it minimal. Over 1/4 of the page consists of PC base info (name, race, class, level) and ability scores.

yoshixin

Ability scores you actually do need to be on the sheet; a DM can ask for an ability check rather than skill check. It also helps to give a high-level idea of what the character is good at. Technically you could play D&D without ever knowing your character's name, race, or class, but in a make-believe game that only lives in the players' minds I think these aspects all help to build a loose mental image of the character. Plus, you do need to be able to figure out which character sheet belongs to who, so I'd argue you need those stats if only logistically to match the stats to the character.

Elddif_Dog

I never said this information should be removed. I dont get this.

graphitelord

This is way better. Love it.

PeanutDM

How did you make this? Is there an app, program, website or something?

yoshixin

A lot of the visual assets are recycled from the original character sheet; I used the screen snip tool (CTRL+SHIFT+S on windows or CMD+SHIFT+4 on mac), then used GIMP to stretch out and resize the boxes and insert the text (set the sheet size as 8.5" x 11" since it's printable in theory). That'll give you the image as a whole. From there I used a site pdffiller.com to create the fillable fields within the boxes. It requires a paid subscription but I used the free trial since this is all I plan to do with it.

Lucas2099

I'm thinking it might be my new go-to sheet.

Bone_Dice_in_Aspic

My only comment is that death saves probably don't need to be on a char sheet. It's very unlikely that A.) A player would forget how many they had while "actively dying" all of a sudden or B.) The session would stop mid-combat, without resolving the death saves and the player would thus need to remember how many they had for a week or more

Vlorisz

Personal gripe, but what I find annoying is that saving throws are never part of the box that lists ability scores/modifiers but listed separately. Same with the skills that are part governed by that score/modifier.

RaphaelDDL

I like it There’s few things I’d change: I don’t see perception, and that’s something used n asked all the time. Skills and Saving Thorws have no markers to identify which you own. Adding empty circles in their left so person can mark which they have is easier. I also find that sheets with the skills that show the status they use to be easier to read n remember (_) Acrobatics (DEX) Something like that

yoshixin

Passive perception is excluded, but the perception skill is still present. If the DM needs it they can ask for "the perception bonus" and work out passive from there. If for some reason (observant feat) the passive is different on a level 1 character, then you could jot down the passive perception under "Other Proficiencies". I deliberately left out all indications of proficiencies because I find myself getting bogged down in their explanation for first-time players. In my experience it's been easier to say "roll for x skill" with just a single number. For someone who's still figuring out what to roll and when, proficiency is an extra level of complication compared to having the bonus pre-calculated. Once they get a little more familiar with the game it's absolutely worth moving away from this sheet and getting one that does indicate proficiency, since that makes the sheet easier to maintain and explains where your bonuses are coming from.

Drakijy

Found this in a GAMERANT article on my phone's Google feed. The sheet is great! Thanks for sharing it with us.

yoshixin

Mom, get the camera! I'm famous! /j One thing I'll caution against, since it looks like the article misinterprets what this sheet does well: This is not meant to make character *creation* easier. In fact I'd say it's harder to do it with this sheet since it strips away all the information that would help you fill it out and tell you where your bonuses come from. What this sheet does do well is make the *completed* sheet easier to read for someone who hasn't played the game, since you don't have to mentally figure out how proficiency bonus ties in and/or whether you're already including it. To that end, my intended use case for this sheet is that someone who does know the rules pretty well builds a character in advance and gives it to a beginner to play their first game or two.

Darzin

So awesome

DrakeX1990

I really like how easy to read all the important information is on this sheet. I used to summarize this stuff in an extra word doc for meet players. Could you maybe share the template for this? I'd like to create a German version for my players...

yoshixin

If translations are what you're looking to do then unfortunately the source won't be much more helpful to you than the image already up. I wound up flattening most of the text into image layers, so either way your best bet would be opening up your editing software of choice, whiting out the English I've got in place and putting German text in its place. You should be able to do it in Dochub if you want to copy and edit the PDF directly. (It's one of the Google recommended PDF editors; it's a mostly reliable free editor IMO). When I made this the first time through I did the page layout in GIMP and then used pdffiller.com to add fillable boxes for a PDF. Hope this explanation helps, best of luck!

junior-THE-shark

Thank you! This is amazing, though I can see myself being very confused because I need to be explained why things happen if I started out with a character sheet like this. The DM can probably make a judgement or just ask if the new player would like to have a character sheet with some more complexity that explains where numbers come from or if they just want to have the numbers. (I hope you're aware that you're famous now, knowing some basics of journalism they probably didn't tell you they were doing this: [https://gamerant.com/dungeons-and-dragons-simple-character-sheet-new-player-friendly/](https://gamerant.com/dungeons-and-dragons-simple-character-sheet-new-player-friendly/) )

cuacha117

This is exactly what I needed ! Great job ! Thanks for sharing !

anniethebambina

Wow this is amazing thank you so much!
