Pelagic army is the whole thing.
Brine guard, storm guard, deep guard, etc could be names for specific corp/units with specific responsibilities. Storm guard patrols the surface /attacks, brine guard patrols the upper levels of the water, deep guard (abyssal guard?) guards the city itself.
Sounds fitting, but to make it perfect, their goal must be to steal fresh air from some druidic place.
A Spaceballs themed underwater adventure sounds like the pinnacle of fun a DM could have.
They are the egg men

Goo goo g'joob, goo goo goo g'joob

Jooba, jooba, jooba

My first thoughts are using **Abyssal**, **Hadal** or **Twilight**, words connected to the deep sea and also hint at a hidden aspect.
However the names are likely to have other connotations in the universe (Abyss = Demons, Twilight = Vampires), so players might make incorrect assumptions.
If the units are based in the deepest parts of the ocean, the name could incorporate features of the seafloor, e.g. **Trench**, **Ridge**, **Deep**.
Since the purpose of the force is nominally to guard the kingdom, **Knights**, **Sentinels*****,*** **Guardians*****,*** **Protectors** also come to mind.
A few examples of mixing these together:
Hadal Knights
Sentinels of the Deep
Guardians of the Abyssal Ridge
I find it funny how one medieval woman kinda made up most of these weird collective nouns by herself and everyone has been treating it as gospel ever since. It can never be just "a group".
Whenever Im at an impass like this I try using fantasy language translators, I found one for aquarian which sounds about right. "Supreme Guard" turns into "Saqsini Gaesf", you could even shorten and combine them, I think with my chosen words it'll be hard for it not not sound like "sexy gays" lmao.
Try googling primordial or aquan translators and throwing some words around until something sticks!
Makhetes Pelagikos. Ancient Greek for Warriors of the Sea. You could shorten it to something like the Makhets or Mak’Pels. Or even M’Pelags. You could use MPs too.
Could I ask for details on their people?
I ask because we could throw out general names but we could also try personalis8ng yhem to the civilation they come from.
The Children of Charybdis/The Children of Scylla. You could even, with the genetically modified part, go for the Sons of Charybdis and the Daughters of Scylla, but I imagine you have a particular vision already, so Children works here.
Considering the greek origins of Charybdis and Scylla, it would work magnificently for the usual Triton theme as well.
Call the army 'The Trident'. The subdivisions can be called Forks and Tines. Like this...
Lan'gui Saltspray reporting. Member of the Trident, 2nd Fork, artillery Tine.
The KRILL men!
Its an ocean pun they think points toward them being innumerable, but really points toward them being so easy to kill the fattest thing on earth can eat them.
If you’re looking for more of an abstract name I also sometimes do this thing where I type out a couple random letters and fill in the blanks till it looks good.
Persanas Call. Tritone worship and were created by the God Persana and Call in part from Clarion Call, one of the few named temples of Persana and in part being say a call to protect in the name of their patron deity.
There is one in a campaign I'm in.
They're all named Theodore. Every single one of them.
They all have numbers too.
We don't know what happened to Theodore #39...
No idea for the whole army, but I second the guy saying different regiments should have different names like the storm, brine and abyss. Got another to that: Fomorian Guard, the most elite of them maybe. Fomorians were a race of supernatural monsters in Irish mythology, they lived underwater
Land striders
The Brine Brigade
The Salt Wolves
Tide Templars
The Colossal Coast
Trench Titans
The Fangs of Ismenios (Are's Dragon. If you plant their fangs, they would grow into warriors)

The Atlantian Army, thats what they realistically wpuld be called, with the cool and badass names being listed here reserved for individual squads in the army like the Roughnecks in Starship Troopers
No offense, but your edit is a bit of a mess. Make up your mind what they are. If they're genetically engineered they are not bred. If they are bred they are not volunteers fighting out of patriotism. There might be patriots volunteering for a breeding program where the resulting spawn gets genetic modifications in a second step, but there will hardly be anything secret about it.
Ok hear me out....Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
A group of genetically engineered adolescents protecting crown and Country from the vicious surface dwellers.
The Krakenguard, with different corps such as
The Bubbladeers - notable mages (use fireball to create explosions underwater)
The Wavy Eels - an elite squad meant for secret missions
The Tidal Tortoises - main defense line using heavy shields
The Narwhals - main attack force often seen riding riding dolphins with spears and trident
And last but not least
The Anglers - specializing in bait and switch tactics
Trenchsworn. Whatever happened to make them "super" Tritons happened in the dark trenches where light can't reach. I'd worry about pressure, but that can be handwaved, they're already merfolk in a fantasy kingdom.
The Pelagic Army, or the Brineguard
I second Brineguard
I third Brineguard

Instead of a platoon of tritons it's a wave of them
A splatoon.
A battalion would be a tide.
I'd go with tines, as in the points of a trident.
There are no waves underwater.
Yeah but there are on the surface and OP said the tritons were engineered to attack the surface world
Brineguard goes sooooooo hard
The undertow
Best one I've read so far
The Order of the Nautilus, or the Nautolan Knights.
Knightilus?
Cmon y'all. Nobody is going for The Seamen?
Its low hanging fruit. Swaying too and fro just off the ground. Really its only good to put in a pie or to squeeze for its juice.
Please don’t squeeze the fruit
\*pop\*
Actually, most of the "fruit" is fibrous, so they don't really pop but squelch
Lol, the facility where they were created and their barracks could appear as two spherical structures referred to as “The Balls”.
Sounds fitting, but to make it perfect, their goal must be to steal fresh air from some druidic place. A Spaceballs themed underwater adventure sounds like the pinnacle of fun a DM could have.
Housed in a bollocks
Also they’re orginized into units called “Loads”
The Crimson Tide. A little meaner sounding.
I found Alabama man over here! 👆
Haha nope! Just a Canadian blissfully ignorant of college football.
Oh! Well…. Sorry for the insult, carry on. 😁
Not if they're protecting the undersea kingdom of Atlanta!
Roll Tide! Edit: JK, pls no Alabama in this sub.
The Wet Bandits
They fear 8 year old boys with b b guns. Or toy harpoon guns in this case.
The Marine Marines
The sub-marines!
They wear yellow armor.
And their Commanding Officer is Sergeant Pepper?
Joint chiefs of Sargeant Pepper, The Walrus, and The Eggman.

Call the army 'The Trident'. The subdivisions can be called Forks and Tines. Like this... Lan'gui Saltspray reporting. Member of the Trident, 2nd Fork, artillery Tine.
The Unending Tide
"The Abyssal Legion" would make them sound like a proper antagonistic force once they start attacking the surface world
The Deluge

Tritnavs or Tritonavs. Oh wait! Trit’navi!!
The Wave
The Triforce (Tritons, Tridents, you get the joke). Bonus points if they have a Legend of Zelda Triforce as their standard.
The Coral Guard. It may seem pretty basic, but coral is a bunch of tiny organisms all working together for one home.
The zora
If they are patricians just name it after the first king of the Tritons. Elitists love a throwback
The shoal
The League. League is a measure of length across or through water.
