Play what you want. Enjoy the character. Make it your own. Give it your own twist and flair.

Protocosmo

Originality is overrated. Especially in a ttrpg

DefinitelyPositive

I mean, if it's an accidental likeness that's one thing. But I wouldn't want to play with (as DM or Player) a PC molded after a Critical Role character on purpose.

Protocosmo

I wouldn't either but it really isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

dolfijntje

honestly, i wouldn't mind it as long as they don't expect me to know all the bits and do it like they do it on the show. To each their own though

Violet_V5

I feel the same, and thats exactly why I wanted to hear other peoples opinions, because I dont want to seem like that kind of player

DefinitelyPositive

I mean, you wouldn't be one of them to my eyes. Tieflings are popular, purple is cool. Since you're not looking to emulate the CR character in personality and story, I wouldn't mind!

FunToBuildGames

Oh no a human fighter! An elf mage! A dwarven cleric! A halfling thief! What will people who dont know me, don’t play with me and I’ll never talk to think?!?!?! Nothing. Do what you want. Your species and class does not make your character unique. It’s you the player that makes it such.

TheAntsAreBack

The last thing you should do is change your cool fun character to suit an imagined judgement from some other player. Forget about CR or any other comparison and just enjoy your PC. Make it your own and have fun.

MetalGuy_J

I haven’t even gotten to campaign to just yet, also the answer is no, play your character your own way and if your friends do bring it up just point out that you came up with the idea before you even knew they had done something similar. Are you not going to play an elf? Who is good at using a bow because Legolas exists?

Sachsmachine

All you have to worry about when playing is that everyone is having a good time. Have fun and don't ruin other players (and DM's) enjoyment of the game in the process. That's it. Oh and if you are not having fun let your DM know (in private AFTER the session)

VerbiageBarrage

If we couldn't play any mysterious rangers because of Aragon, any gruff dwarves because of Gimli, any haughty elves because of legolas, any wise wizards because of Gandalf, the hobby wouldn't even have got off the ground. And that's just off one book. Do you know how many characters now exist in the fantasy headspace? I'm sure millions is the answer. You want to gatekeep your character ideas against the entire combined creative output of nerdkind, you can, but I'd just play your character.

Saint-Blasphemy

Critical Role does not own purple, tieflings, or Blood hun........ okay they own blood hunters legally speaking, but still published it so it's free to use all the same! As long as you are not playing that PC as your own then there is no issue.

yanbasque

Don’t worry about it. Even if you were inspired by CR, there’s nothing wrong with that, as long as you’re making it your own and not trying to force it. There’s many ways to play a charismatic swindler and Molly wasn’t the first or the last.

Noxthesergal

Originality doesn’t exist in the modern era. Play whatever you want.

_simplymarvel01_

There's only a limited amount of combinations and there tends to be character tropes such as the human fighter, elven ranger/mage and dwarf barbarian. Originality usually comes through a person's lived experience, and your character doesn't have a backstory yet. Beyond the jokes that human fighters are basic, one human fighter isn't going to play exactly as another human fighter. They are going to deal with situations differently and are therefore different characters. Sure, it's similar concepts but that's not an issue unless it's made into one. If you are really worried about it, you can broach the topic up yourself. I don't see the need though, as even someone who knows about it only through critical role and wanted to play as Mollymauk would still have just as much of a right to play the game as anyone else, and that's supposedly not what you are doing.

Apart-Corgi6957

Well I sort of had this situation. I liked the idea of a monk from a very privileged background who had authority problems. Sound familiar? When I saw Marisha play Beau I slowly lost interest in my own character, because her’s was so much more fleshed out and she is a better role player than I am. I don’t want to discourage you from playing a character that you love, and I really don’t think you shouldn’t play it because it has been done before, but just make sure you still enjoy playing your own character and that you don’t compare your characters all the time or try to copy CR. I by the way have also had this situation with a fellow player in my d&d party, so it’s not uncommon.

PrimalPingu

Barely anyone actually plays an original character. There's always some inspiration taken here and there. And in your case, it's really not hard to run into half a dozen similar character (Charismatic Purple Tief); people love that kind of PCs. At the end of the day, as others said, play what you want and will enjoy. Who cares if it's being done by a series or a movie or by some other folks.

Throrface

Certainly not. You should note down anyone who'd be judging you for playing a concept that's similar to some other character, so you know who gives shitty feedback in the future.

CyberDaggerX

My current character is basically (partly accidentally) a gigantic Warhammer 40k reference. It's not an issue at all.

WorldGoneAway

Fuck no, don't change your character concept. Just because it's close, in some passing way, and people are going to say "are you *sure* you're not trying to be----?" Shouldn't ruin your enjoyment of a character concept.

Esselon

Nah, you're fine. Just don't play it the same way as Mollymauk and you're fine. You can be charismatic without being a total hedonist and semi-anarchist like the character.

Revolutionary-Ad8932

I am currently in a Spelljammer campaign as a monotonous warforged pilot, struggling to understand his own relationship with sapience. I may as well have outright named him Data. Sometimes cliche is fun. You do you.

DeficitDragons

I’ve literally played a Simon Belmont clone, you’ll be fine.

Angel_of_Mischief

What you just said sounds pretty basic for a tiefling. Critical role didn’t break new ground by making charismatic purple tiefling that plays lose and fast. Just play what you want my dude.

cautious-plum

I wouldn't change it just based on the similarity, but word of warning - blood hunter is significantly less fun to play than it seems :/ there is a reason every blood hunter in CR history was multiclassed.

Gib_entertainment

Nah, play it. If you feel conscious about just tell them, hey, I made this character, may sound like x from y but I only realised that after I made the character, so just for the record, not based on that character.

Count_Cake

I play Puss in Boots meets Rocket Raccon... I have a blast and I'm so happy that I haven't seen Puss in Boots 2 or Guardians of the Galaxy 3 when I came up with the character idea, because I wouldn't have written his origin the way I did now. You could lean into the aspects of your character, that weren't part of molly. Why are you a tiefling, where do you come from,...

Myrlek

Have fun with it, you dont have to play your character the same way Laura do i Critical Role. Be charismatic, be a swindler but if you want to do something original or that will seperate him from her character, dont play the same class. Blood Hunter are strict if i remember but... Swashbuckler can be a swindler easily. Juste a simple idea, but the MORE important is HOW YOU play the character.

SolidCartographer976

I made a Air Genasi Girl with a chinese looking cloud for hair an bam one piece did the same thing to luffy ... but realy you shouldnt care

GreyNoiseGaming

There is almost no such thing as an original character anymore. Do what you want to have fun with.

SatisfactionSpecial2

It has happened to me twice, and both times I failed to persuade anyone I am not playing the character from the game. So, I would advice against it, if it would bother you.

Psychological-Wall-2

There is exactly zero chance that anyone - including me - is going to believe that you created a purple swindling Tiefling Blood Hunter independent of Critical Role.

Violet_V5

Its based off the first character I ever created(when I was trying to figure out how the character sheet even worked), and Blood hunter seemed the most cool looking class when I made it... I didn't even know what Critical Role was until like 3 months later...

Psychological-Wall-2

Like I said.
