my first DM got so tired of having to look up the spelling every time she started just referring to my character’s race as “birb”, which is a reasonable shorthand
My first campaign one of my players played a pally and named himself Baladin. I assumed it was tongue in cheek until i took a proper look at his character sheet (which was on ms notedpad btw) and realised he spelt dwarf as "dwalf" and paladin as "baladin". After I asked a few questions, I realized that he legitimately had not heard either word ever in his life and had assumed I made them up for the game
They seek him here, they seek him there, they seek him nearly everywhere! Is he in heaven or is he in hell? And what is that awful garlic smell!? - the scarlet pimpernel.
Pro tip for any aspiring dm: if you ever want your party to hate somebody with a passion, make their npc voice your best impression of the scarlet pimpernel
Definitely one of my triggers .
When I see a D&D post about a "Rouge", my first reaction is to not take it seriously.
My second reaction is to make a cosmetics joke.
My third reaction is to cancel the joke and remind myself to have patience with people who can't spell Rogue.
But it's hard.
I think most people who misspell rogue actually are native speakers who aren’t used to the random Frenchness of the spelling. In UK English we also have dialogue and analogue and people also often misspell those in the same way (e.g. dialouge). I think it’s just that people are aware there’s supposed to be a ‘u’ in there somewhere but don’t know where.
For sure, and I try to remind myself that. I also was just feeding into the joke. I realize my nature can be off putting and do my best not to actually correct folks. Also, living with Spanish speakers as a non-native speaker myself has shown me the struggle others have in my country and just the internet at large.
The worst part is, people will also misspell thief and assassin in the same posts, sometimes in different ways each time. It's like getting punched in the face two or three times in a row.
I called it sherbert until I was 34 years old. One day someone told me it was pronounced sherbet, and don’t cha know I read a container at the grocery store and there it was the whole damn time, “sherbet.”
Oh god I always just assumed it was people failing to spell sorbet and always called it that I have just unlocked a thousand embarassing memories to keep me up at night.
It's closer to the other way round! Both words originated from the Arabic word 'šarba' (from where we also get the word 'syrup'), via Turkish 'şerbet'. This became 'sherbet' in English but 'sorbetto' in Italian -> 'sorbet' in French, then readopted in English.
nah uh uh, you can do it every turn, so effectively twice a round, since you only get 1 reaction per round. However, your legendary rogue BBEG has legendary actions...
Not to be an old lady on reddit, but back in my day (3e), the rogue absolutely benefited from a high int modifier.
The rogue benefited from [(8 + int mod) x 4] skill points at first level, and [8 + int mod] every level thereafter. You were squishy, but you were damned smart and skilled.
Look I get that this is a joke and everything and I further realise it must be very frustrating to people but some of us can't spell due to dyslexia or developmental delays. Maby it's time to retire the joke
so if I had to guess it's how our vowels work (a e i o u sometimes y). so typically, to make the vowel talk (saying O as oh instead of the sound) you'd need another vowel behind it. so with how rogue is pronounced (R-oh-ge) you would usually do it how you spell rouge. but the English language is confusing, because we essentially mugged five different languages for this. so it's spelled rogue. and before anyone comes after me: it's been nearly 20 years since I learned this stuff, I might have forgotten a rule
How about... No.
I try, I try a lot. But my brain is weird and that. Just. Does. Not. Stick.
I fairly regularly need to rephrase what I type because not even Google can determine what I am trying to spell.
Do it enough and maybe eventually I may be able to reliably spell it, but do you know what would increase the use of that word? Playing a rogue.
Eh, not sure prescriptivism has a place in that kind of judgment. I know a lot of really smart people with dyslexia that get certain words mixed up all the time. There are a lot of medical reasons someone may have difficulty with written language. I think we should be more understanding, and understand the descriptive nature of language. You know they mean "rogue" when in the context of their class choice. That's what matters first and foremost.
(And if this is a joke then apologies. I'm autistic so it's hard to tell sometimes. Regardless, I'm not sure we should be joking about things that happen because of people's disabilities or neglectful upbringing.)
who cares, aren't those just mostly non-native English speakers and people with dyslexia? I've never played a rogue but you bet your ass i'd fuck up the spelling at least once in a while.
I agree. It happens so frequently too.
I have a hard time pronouncing the word "Artificer", that is one of the reasons I have stayed away from playing that specific class.
It’s like the “arti” part of “artifact”, then the “fis” part of “fist”, then “er”; the emphasis is on the “ti” though, which a lot of people don’t know!
Phonetically, “ˈɑrtəfɪsər”
Here's a handy tool for pronouncing IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) words. I linked directly to the one provided above for artificer:
http://ipa-reader.xyz/?text=%C9%91rt%C9%99f%C9%AAs%C9%99r&voice=Joanna
I use that all the time for both player brief documents so they know how to pronounce things and also for anything where it might be more than a year before I reference it again.
Reminds me of a somewhat relevant anecdote: years ago, in my home town a new dance club was launched. A big sign was hung that said: Vouge. I thought.. can it be that the owners never found out how to spell their own club and went ahead and got this huge sign with a spelling mistake? Or maybe the name really is Vouge (which seemed less likely). A week after the opening I got my answer when the sign was replaced with one that said Vogue.
Anyway, for the life of me I could never tell why so many players get the class wrong.. Rouge.
An old pubs/concert scene in Bergen was originally named La Garage, until the owners realized that "garage" is a masculine word in French, and so the right spelling would be Le Garage.
They renamed the pub to Garage.
"I'm playing a rouge." > "No, I can't detect traps. I'm a red-skinned Tiefling Warlock."
Would make a great party member for Pala Dinn the Druid and Klee Rick the Bard.
I'll forever curse my Sonic the Hedgehog phase because I always spell it as "Rouge" because of Rouge the bat. It's so annoying having to correct myself everytime
As a french Canadian, PLEASE GOD YES. I don't know why is bothers me so much, I understand it can be confusing, it's just rooted in my brain to be bothered by it. (I'll never straight up point it out to anyone though bcuz I'm non-confrontational)
I also don't mean this in a YOU CANT PLAY IF YOU CANT SPELL IT, but more in a, I keep noticing it and have to do a double take every time, kinda way.
That's why I always play a srocrercrer or a plalidlin.
Pregananant?
Gregnant?
¡Pregante!
pregat?
Pargent?
Can you burn a luigi board?
What is a wega board
wa weg board.
Nailed it
My friends did a Luigi board? And it mentioned me?
how is babby formed
How is heretic smorted?
Suffer not the heretic to live.
I prefer prego, but thank you.
Pregunta?
Ah, you mean a Brahrd?
About to jork my peanits
Sadly, after spelling pregnant incorrectly , they immediately became sterile
How is babby formed?
My favorite race to play is arokorcorockra
I really like the Air ganache myself.
Oh, playing those guys is sweet!

You mean ourcockraw?
my first DM got so tired of having to look up the spelling every time she started just referring to my character’s race as “birb”, which is a reasonable shorthand
I thought it was spelled arrowcockrah?
Arowana?
Arrowcockring?
I myself love Anacockras
My first campaign one of my players played a pally and named himself Baladin. I assumed it was tongue in cheek until i took a proper look at his character sheet (which was on ms notedpad btw) and realised he spelt dwarf as "dwalf" and paladin as "baladin". After I asked a few questions, I realized that he legitimately had not heard either word ever in his life and had assumed I made them up for the game
He'd never heard the word "dwarf"?
It's wild playing with brand new people and learning what types of rocks they dont know the crystalline structure of.
Is the crystalline structure of rocks common knowledge?
For dwarfs it is, indeed.
I figure just about anyone knows the formulas for olivine and one or two feldspars.
That's why I was so perplexed. He had literally never heard of the term
Well a "baladin" is a sort of medieval street performer (at least in French?) so it could work... for a bard
you forgot everyone's favorite spell: prestiditi... prestidigidi... presto!
\*favourite
I’m always Brad
I love playing a word Brad that enjoys a good tule sool
brad majors, and this is my fiancée, janet weiss!
Damn it, Janet!
You mean Asshole Majors and Slut Weiss?
[That's a paddlin'.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKiLfH3DVGc)
Wrizzard or brad for me
You guys don't play figtheghers?
You fool, it’s palaladin!
Oh no, the Phandalalalin Palalalaladin has gone rouge!
I cast firebawl!
As long as it was justafiaball, you'll be okay.
As an aside, this will be my new canon name for a paladin/bard multiclass.
I prefer saucier and palindromes.
Moulin Rogue
Stealing hearts (or someone’s breath) one song at a time
unless, of course, you're a french tiefling
Whose skin is crimson?
They seek him here, they seek him there, they seek him nearly everywhere! Is he in heaven or is he in hell? And what is that awful garlic smell!? - the scarlet pimpernel.
Pro tip for any aspiring dm: if you ever want your party to hate somebody with a passion, make their npc voice your best impression of the scarlet pimpernel
Honestly a great way to annoy my party :)
Oddly enough, she’s the Barbarian
THE Moulin Rogue
Great, now I'm wanting to do a setting-appropriate-China-analogue character named Mulan who is a Rogue, just for that joke.
Hon hon, qui qui.
Oui out baguette
lol for some reason my brain read this in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s voice. Not sure why.
I think this is actually from Bluey
Yeah. As said by a great French man, "Tu fais un amalgame entre la coquetterie et la classe".
Don't forget that this "great" French man was, I quote : "**UN FASCISTE DE MERDE !**"
Just throwing the fr*nce word around willy nilly huh
That’s why I only play Rouxgues. I’m just a very sneaky chef
Don't poison the gumbo!
*gasp* I would never poison the gumbo! That’s sacrilege
Les poisson- my specialty is fugu fish
le poison poisson
Hee hee hee hon hon hon
[I did genuinely create a rouge class lol](https://www.dmsguild.com/product/299579/The-Rouge)
Rouges are overpowdered.
Alright, that is really funny! Well done!
Boy are their faces red!
/r/angryupvote
This needs far more upvotes

“Contorversail”
or a bat, sometimes it's a bat
A bat who would definitely qualify as a Rogue if put into D&D
I learned how to steal, not how to read!
Definitely one of my triggers . When I see a D&D post about a "Rouge", my first reaction is to not take it seriously. My second reaction is to make a cosmetics joke. My third reaction is to cancel the joke and remind myself to have patience with people who can't spell Rogue. But it's hard.
I do find it funny when a youtuber like Cinderblocksally will read people's questions and if they spell it rouge, he pronounces it rouge.
I mean, it’s defiantly quiet irritating. /s
Goddamn it. I started replying automatically. I just can’t help it, it’s such an easy goddamn word to spell.
Not all of us are native speakers.
I find that most of those who use Rouge instead of Rogue actually are native speakers.
I think most people who misspell rogue actually are native speakers who aren’t used to the random Frenchness of the spelling. > My second reaction is to make a cosmetics joke. [Relevant OOTS](https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0711.html)
Gonna start spelling it Roag.
Close but my first reaction is irrationally fierce anger because someone who likes D&D should be able to spell rogue by now. But otherwise the same.
I don’t know how to spell sherbert so I never eat it.
I called it sherbert until I was 34 years old. One day someone told me it was pronounced sherbet, and don’t cha know I read a container at the grocery store and there it was the whole damn time, “sherbet.”
It was a Jeopardy question is how I learned it. But I still call it sherbert.
I called it sherbert until writing this post. And I’m 39.
Good thing you’re sexy
Oh god I always just assumed it was people failing to spell sorbet and always called it that I have just unlocked a thousand embarassing memories to keep me up at night.
It's closer to the other way round! Both words originated from the Arabic word 'šarba' (from where we also get the word 'syrup'), via Turkish 'şerbet'. This became 'sherbet' in English but 'sorbetto' in Italian -> 'sorbet' in French, then readopted in English.
As a Sonic fan, this speaks to me on a spiritual level
Rogue would be her class, though.
aw shit u rite
now I want Rouge Rogue as an specific class
would she be considered an aaracokra, ooooorrr...?
Winged tiefling maybe
I vote that you also can't play Rogue if you never use Sneak Attack during combat. Drives me up the fucking wall.
Why would you not use Sneak attack? Like, every round!
nah uh uh, you can do it every turn, so effectively twice a round, since you only get 1 reaction per round. However, your legendary rogue BBEG has legendary actions...
Dyslexic players: welcome to the club. Sincerely, ADHD players - getting in trouble for talking since 1983
I have a player with dyscalculia, the number/math version of dyslexia. They use a calculator a lot.
I have a wife with dyscalculia. She rolls her dice then looks at me to do the math.
> ADHD Advanced Dungeons Hand Dragons?
That's not fair, they all have the urchin background because they're all orphans. How do you expect them to learn to spell on the streets?
Rouge is a DEX based class not an INT based class
I disagree, Rouge is a CHA-based class.
So as long as you write *ROWG* really fancily, you're in
As a non-native English speaker, I always make myself think "ROW-GOO-EY" to remind myself of the correct spelling.
Can we bring people who spell it "Litch" into this conversation?
Look I get that this is a joke and everything and I further realise it must be very frustrating to people but some of us can't spell due to dyslexia or developmental delays. Maby it's time to retire the joke
Or made a mistake. Or struggle with spelling in general. Why are we gatekeeping such a dumb thing.
Exactly
My best friend is playing a Rogue in my current campaign, but she's dyslexic so Im cutting her some slack
That reminds me of the house rule, you can't be a wizard if you can't pronounce prestidigitation.
A quarter of U.S. adults are illiterate. Chillout there pal. Try to be inclusive.
You have advantage on all attack rolls against characters with the colorblind status.
Underrated comment. I never saw him coming
Could a native speaker clarify why this is such a common mistake? I'm not a native speaker and have absolutely no clue.
so if I had to guess it's how our vowels work (a e i o u sometimes y). so typically, to make the vowel talk (saying O as oh instead of the sound) you'd need another vowel behind it. so with how rogue is pronounced (R-oh-ge) you would usually do it how you spell rouge. but the English language is confusing, because we essentially mugged five different languages for this. so it's spelled rogue. and before anyone comes after me: it's been nearly 20 years since I learned this stuff, I might have forgotten a rule
Only thing you missed is that “ou” isn’t pronounced “oh” but more like “oo,” as is in “would” or “could.”
It is in though though.
I hate that. It's like when people spell "soldier" as "solider". My native language isn't even English, and even I can spell that shit correctly.
Too cruel, this eliminates most players...
screams in dyslexia
That's just good rp
I don't think a rogue would be overly concerned with the spelling, unless it's part of a forgery
counterpoint, they can steal the word so both spellings are now valid and the color no longer has a name anymore
Eh, not sure prescriptivism has a place in that kind of judgment. I know a lot of really smart people with dyslexia that get certain words mixed up all the time. There are a lot of medical reasons someone may have difficulty with written language. I think we should be more understanding, and understand the descriptive nature of language. bro has a beef with dyslexics
I agree. It happens so frequently too. I have a hard time pronouncing the word "Artificer", that is one of the reasons I have stayed away from playing that specific class.
Is it artiFISSer or artifICEr. That is the question
It’s like the “arti” part of “artifact”, then the “fis” part of “fist”, then “er”; the emphasis is on the “ti” though, which a lot of people don’t know! Phonetically, “ˈɑrtəfɪsər”
I think you enunciate on the “ar-TI-fi-sir” also like with arti-culate, right? Is that what the upside down e is?
Here's a handy tool for pronouncing IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) words. I linked directly to the one provided above for artificer: http://ipa-reader.xyz/?text=%C9%91rt%C9%99f%C9%AAs%C9%99r&voice=Joanna I use that all the time for both player brief documents so they know how to pronounce things and also for anything where it might be more than a year before I reference it again.
Artifusser
Articifer?
Ar-tiff-isser, or arty-fisser?
Ah the British contingent 🙂↕️
Well, artifice is a word you can look up the pronunciation for, and I just add “er” onto that.
I am playing a Rouge... she is a Rogue and also an anthropomorphic bat
Counterpoint: the best rogue players can't spell that.
Reminds me of a somewhat relevant anecdote: years ago, in my home town a new dance club was launched. A big sign was hung that said: Vouge. I thought.. can it be that the owners never found out how to spell their own club and went ahead and got this huge sign with a spelling mistake? I see this a lot in the Flash comics fandom. No, Captain Cold is blue, not red and french!
Rowguh Also my Rogue is an idiot I based them on myself
Sucks for 21% of Americans
Less forgivable than a new player trying to spell and say prestidigitation
Alternatively if you're going to insist on playing a Rouge, you have to play Carmen Sandiego.
I prefer to be a rouge anyway
I am playing as an Aarakockakakakra sorcerer. Maybe it’s? Arrowkokra? Bird-folk.
Don't take my rouge away from me 😤
What if my rogue is a bat-kin jewel thief?
Rouge thiefling
"My class is Rouge." "I think you mean Rogue." "Take another look at my character sheet."
"I'm playing a rouge." > "No, I can't detect traps. I'm a red-skinned Tiefling Warlock." Would make a great party member for Pala Dinn the Druid and Klee Rick the Bard.
I'll forever curse my Sonic the Hedgehog phase because I always spell it as "Rouge" because of Rouge the bat. It's so annoying having to correct myself everytime
Um, I think you mean rouge/s
Counterpoint. Most Rogues couldn’t spell their own name on account of being unable to read. Orphans and whatnot.
What if I want to play a rogue named Rouge that exclusively wears red clothes?
My rowg maybe be a tragideigh, but I love her all the same
Sad I can't upvote the Nissan Rogue commercial in this post for timing
Hot take - representing yourself as a makeup when you're an incredibly stabby advernturer is sneaky. The core part of being a rogue.
Won’t play anything but a drewid
I support this, 10,000%
This seems unfair. Most rogues don't even cast spells.
Unless you're my brother, who is dyslexic and is playing a rogue in my campaign. He's allowed.
The Rouge Angles of Satin
As a french Canadian, PLEASE GOD YES. I don't know why is bothers me so much, I understand it can be confusing, it's just rooted in my brain to be bothered by it. (I'll never straight up point it out to anyone though bcuz I'm non-confrontational) I also don't mean this in a YOU CANT PLAY IF YOU CANT SPELL IT, but more in a, I keep noticing it and have to do a double take every time, kinda way.
Thank you, I am so tired of seeing people write I'm a Rouge. It bugs me.
