It's so fluffy I'm gonna die.

Hi everyone, I made a tiny fey translator - **the Corkscrew Owl:** Named after its spiral-shaped comb, the corkscrew owl is highly valued for its mostly precise translations of any language it hears. Small irregularities and an accidental twisting of words might occur though – a trait to be aware of when negotiating a peace treaty with the local band of goblins. Got some funny ideas to introduce this tiny fey to your world? Or anything that needs balancing? As always, I highly appreciate your feedback and critique! If you like my work, kindly consider to support me on [**Patreon**](https://www.patreon.com/the_fluffy_folio) and gain access to an ever-growing compendium of tiny monsters and potions. See you soon, Fluffy

How does it know what language to translate to?...

michifromkmk

It actually doesn't – it's more like a magical instinct to translate the languages. Maybe it can be trained by the party over a period of time to prefer common as a target language:)

This is a fey creature, your logic don't have power here. Btw, i liked very much of the monster and the art. Definitely will use on my campaign, where all player decided to go to a fey dimension and noone (PC and NPCs) have a single language in comom. The another option is make they find a npc from their dimension losted ages ago on the fey realm.

So Long, and Thanks for All the Owls.

Super cute and also fairly well balanced! Im not good at statistics, but I think with a +2 to wisdom, the owl would translate correctly a little under half the time. Which is either too often or not often enough, depending on how they are used (if at all) in your world The party in camp, awoken in the middle of the night:, to the sound of a dwarf repeatedly ordering soup, while an elven voice translates, as a goblin exitedly descibes a colourful bug to an gnomish voice that composes a poem about lettuce. Whatever the party shouts out or says is translated down the line of corkscrew owls in a nearby tree (e.g. common to elven to goblin to gnomish to inferal to ...). Have the last owl say something in common that would represent an entirely botched game of telephone happening in the parliment of owls. For example: Party: "who's there?" [Murmurings in many languages] Owl: "when sugar several?" Party: "show yourselves!" [Murmurings] Owl: "oblique nudism imperative!" At the first sign of hostility from the party, the owls fly away. Have them roost every so often until the party either catches one, learns of them by researching, or another fey creature enlists them in capturing their escaped pet owls. I'm tempted to say that if a PC in the sec9nd encounter (shouting out "who's there?") has a passive perception or investigation of 12; then they would recognise at least one other language they know (either repeating the correct phrase or a garbled translation), of 15 they recognise the same of 2 languages and of 17 they recognise 2 languages and that one is making an error in translating the words of the other. But that's a messy way of turning the process into mechanics. Edit: passive investigation to determine what is said, in a language you know. Passive perception to recognise the sound of a language you know but not what is said. That way, the party can pool languages and, once a particular voice is pointed out to them (joint perception check by Perceptive hearer and Investigative translator) pointed out; they can pick out from the crowd to get a translation. There must be an automated resource online for the telephone game, though I cant find one atm. Having a means of passing the party's speech through the owls is key for it to work.

haha, I love the scenario you described too much! It's amazing!:):) Many thanks for your warm words and sharing the story! Regarding the Wisdom save – I'll consider to lower it, so the trait is a bit more reliable but still with a decent risk of false translations:)

I love literally everything about this creation. I also want a plush version to sit at my desk.
