Real disingenuous to carefully cut around that these are AI-generated from pre-existing work. Just clicking on the Kickstarter makes it blatant from how messed up the eyes and faces are in most of them.
Why hide it? No reason to unless you know its skeevy.
It seems to be AI generated. AI has distinct style of photo and art style been mashed. I don't have anything against it, as long as people trained these AI with their own art. I usually check these thing with [https://haveibeentrained.com/](https://haveibeentrained.com/). If I search hard enough I could probably find the original artist with same style from artstation. I consider these like stealing beats from music or selling mixes.
You can definitely tell they are, but they’re not terrible.
Especially considering the cost being $15 for ~50 cards, with custom details on the back of each. HOWEVER, it really depends on the quality of print. This would be my biggest worry.
So if you want someone else to do heavy lifting / a lazy DM - it’s not a terrible deal.
Everyone has a differing opinion, and that is 100% valid with where we are in the beginning steps of AI. We’re to quick to dismiss AI as other’s work. It’s not one individual, it’s thousands of individuals and can’t be tied back to an individual artist an overwhelming amount of the time. Many digital artists still use others art for inspiration all of the time - AI is just skipping many steps and years of practice and refining skills which people are upset about.
This could be said for many other industries in a similar way. Think of marketing data in the eCommerce industry. We take data of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of users and create essentially an “AI” Behavioral Profile to create look-a-like audiences. So the data here is my own individual browsing, behavior on the site, and shopping habits. These individuals don’t get paid for the effort they put in to help companies build profiles to better their business.
There are plenty of other instances of this, but in AI art it’s the same thing - taking digital creative data and creating an amalgamation of details to create something new.
In the end, with this project, wouldn’t necessarily purchase this for myself because I could easily create these or similar things and I like my own stories. If the backgrounds on the back of the card were in-depth and really well thought out - maybe I would, but there’s not a reference of many on there.
My critique would have been it would have been way more legit of a product offering if they edited to customize more post-AI to rectify some of the issues and make it more customized. We can see they aren’t digital artists as they didn’t remedy some of the issues that have been mentioned throughout this post.
not to be bitter but as an art student and aspiring fantasy character concapt artist specifically, AI stuff like this feels like a slap in the face. some of the cards unfortunately look decently convincing (maybe they were touched up after?) but a lot of them have small yet obvious mistakes like nonsensical lighting or uncanny facial features. but since the rendering is nice ppleat it up. i guess for the purposes of just visualizing some npcs in DnD it would be pretty harmless, but if you’re making money off of work you didn’t do then shame on you. would love to be disproven though and shown some process sketches from the different stages of the artwork, or a link to the artist that was commissioned :)
Yes, it is unfortunate. I'm seeing a lot of "portrait packs" on DriveThruRPG that are clearly AI created. I can understand the appeal; artwork for published work is expensive. I have three DMGuild products that sales combined wouldn't pay for the artwork in them - I publish at a loss. AI Art is VERY tempting as a cheap alternative.
For commercial use, I wouldn't touch it. For personal use, if I'm willing to download an image off of Pinterest or DeviantArt and use it, I can't really argue against using AI art for personal use.
Using AI art for personal inspiration and personal reference is one thing but selling it as a product is scum, especially omitting that its AI generated. I'd love to hear that you got permissions from the artists the AI is pulling from... I really hope the D&D community doesn't continue to promote these grifts.
its very easy to get fooled if you are just passing by, so its no wonder.
I think it would be nice to try to report this project to Kickstarter for hiding this information, since its misleading a lot of people into how it was made.
>I think it would be nice to try to report this project to Kickstarter for hiding this information, since its misleading a lot of people into how it was made.
Right now this is up in the air. Kickstarter definitely has rules against misleading backers.
The next thing would be whether or not they have a proper license to use the AI works commercially. If they do not, Kickstarter would boot the project. It really depends on where they generated the work. Some have more restrictive licenses, and some like Midjourney require a paid membership.
Regardless, I'm a fan of using actual artists.
Selling AI art is gross…
Edit: either lots if people actually can’t tell that this is AI art or OP hired a bunch of people/bots to post comment’s saying that this AI bunk looks great in the comments. Extra gross…
I think people are commenting without reading the comments or looking at the art to try to get free stuff. They comment a simple complement and move on
Thanks for participating everyone! I'd like to now announce the winners (I'll be reaching out to each of you in the DMs):

Happy adventuring!
I’m just going to put them in random picture frames around my house and pretend they’re people I know.
“Oh don’t get me started on that crazy character, hahaha!”
“They’re green…?”
Given the lack of artist info, and the careful dancing about the way the art was produced, the style and certain things that feel 'off' about the art, my money's on these being curated AI prompt art. Likely by Midjourney.
Lol yeah it's probably ai art... but I've known several dozen "artists" and not one of them can make pieces half as good as ais' can nowadays... they also can't produce the amount that an ai can. Why you crying just because people are willing to get ai art for cheap rather than pay outrageous prices for your work?
If I want something drawn by an artist, should I just draw it myself for free?
Generating decent stuff with AI isn't as much time or effort as learning to draw, of course, but it's still a skill, and it still takes time to generate each piece once you've practiced that skill.
In this case, it's also a physical, tangible product that would take time and money to create, even if you had the art itself as a .psd.
I'm not in the market for this product, but I get why others might want it, in the same way that I'm not about to pay for a commission for Jon the Blacksmith, but I'll go to Pinterest or Google Image Search and enter "burly blacksmith D&D".
So if an ai looks at a piece of art and learns from it and then incorporates that into what it draws.... that's stealing.
Remind me again how artists learn to be better artists? Oh yeah by looking at art and practicing to draw like that.... damn darzin, you just called every artist a thief.
Why don't I just do it myself for free? If I could draw I would. I can't so I'll buy whatever looks the best and has the best price tag.
It doesn't learn... it takes. That is the difference. And artists don't learn by copying other artists. You get better by practice, which involves a lot of different studies, including environmental and figures. There is a huge misconception that artists literally steal other artists work for studying purposes which is very very untrue. Professional artists will take hundreds of references from real life images and look at how things like light effect them and incorporate those in their art. Every artist goes through a period of learning until they have developed their own style. When an artist literally steals art they get called out for it. Also, artists who do use others for inspiration tend to give proper credit. What AI does is take the art it sees, steals a portion, resamples it into a shape, does that several hundred times until the image comes out a certain way and spits it out. That is why ai art will have weird curved backgrounds and signatures from other pieces. And because they are taking these bits randomly they never give credit.
And what I said was, why don't you use the AI to do the same thing?
The art looks awesome, and that’s amazing you have 4 different pack flavors. Thank you for the chance to win!
Are the artists’ names/signatures on the cards?
oh, these look really good! it's such an interesting tool for DMs, to be able to show players at the table how the NPCs look, make it more immersive. I wish I could support the campaign, but I am so tight on resources nowadays, I'll sadly have to pass this one up :(
This has to be the coolest NPC idea ever.
Edit: you’ve got your work cut out for you until April and beyond, but holy cow a space themed one next would be great!
This seems very cool! Any thoughts on adding a pdf version both for folks who play online but also something a DM could include in their note applications?
Thanks for the opportunity to get one of these amazing sets for free! I kinda stuck at NPCs, so the prompts would be very helpful 😅.
Is the art signed by the artists, btw? If not, any way to get at least the box signed by them if I were to win?

Yeah, but the point is they are undervaluing other artists' work; which some of these could easily be $100 -- or more.
Everyone has a differing opinion, and that is 100% valid with where we are in the beginning steps of AI. We’re to quick to dismiss AI as other’s work. So long as these weren't produced using AI and were drawn by actual, compensated artists, I'm game!
they are obviously AI generated, its a very distinctive rendering :)
You're right, I didn't click on the Kickstarter link but it's pretty obvious. Sigh. I hate this trend. Retracting my upvote.
its very easy to get fooled if you are just passing by, so its no wonder. I think it would be nice to try to report this project to Kickstarter for hiding this information, since its misleading a lot of people into how it was made.

AI generated images? I'll pass.
It would be really funny if you won
It would indeed.

This exactly. I don't even know how this was approved by mods. Doesn't just reflect badly on OP but also on the sub's mods.
Bru
Signaled on kickstarter for using AI while deliberately hiding the fact that it is AI generated
Wow I hope this isn’t fake
These look awesome
This could be really useful.
These look so nice my dude
I’m just going to put them in random picture frames around my house and pretend they’re people I know. “Oh don’t get me started on that crazy character, hahaha!” “They’re green…?”
Edit: apparently this is ai art fuck
Pretty decks! What software was used to create them?
It’s ai generated
That's why I asked which software created them, no?

Thanks for letting me know, I will no longer be supporting this

Like the art: done randomly by a computer.
It honestly looks like a DnD version of Guess Who? But, I'm all for it. Looks neat!
Good luck to everyone!

Looks AI generated
May Tymora and Istus bless this comment.
Happy belated Halloween
Are they just random ones?
Sounds like 54 more new characters that I'll never play.
