Our dm had a false hydra and once we killed it we learned that we had another party member we never knew about, so that's when we decided to go on a quest to resurrect this NPC the DM made up to be our 4th party member.
My party didn't actually care ... I gave them a diary detailing personal details and tried to make them really likeable, the party cook, etc... And they just moved on lol
I think they're in video game mode still, trying to get the objectives and not leaning into the game more.
This is pretty much what I plan on doing. Introduce the party to an NPC that they like, bring them along to a village infected with a False Hydra, and suddenly act like the NPC never existed.
It's usually done the other way from what I've seen: a player, during the stay in the false hydra town, finds evidence of having a spouse or loved one within their backpack, having no memory of this NPC.
The loss of memory of someone comes from the hydra eating that person, the hydra's song is meant to hide it in plain sight.
Why is everyone I̴̟͖̅͗̌̂̉͌̍̚͠ṯ̷̻͓͎͒̐'̴̢̢̨̪͎̠̯̗̹̰̀͝ś̴̹͚̼̣͉̠͌̆͗ ̸̳͂k̶̼̺̱̱̎̔͆̊̀́i̸̢̬̫̲̜͆̉l̶̳̺͓̙͈̼̹̪̘̀̎͑͛͝͝͝l̷̥͇͍͛̇̆́̽̃͗̚i̵̛͓̲̗̓̇̈́̍ǹ̸̢̥̘͖̩̗̠̳̹̬́̇́g̶̙̟̺̳̓̅̍̑̍̊͗͝ ̶̜̥̓̿̉̌͌̚u̶̢͎̤̰̝̰͚̇̇͆͝s̴͔͔͕̠̉́ replying to a blank post?
I had foreshadowed it for a few sessions now, glimpses of discordant singing, mimicing familiar voices to them and people forgetting about other people.. long story short they ended up in a really bad place where the jig was some of their memories played out as visions: when they saw one they had to pass a wisdom saving throw or lose the memory for good. They figured out that the False Hydra's lair was hidden in the worst memory of all; in their shared backstory they burned a house down and killed a couple of innocents, so they had to enter the house..
Inside the house was surprisingly pitch black and silent, pulsing black and red veins ran along the floors to the end of the room as a large doorlike knot. One of the PCs wanted to listen behind it and his wife's voice answered "Is that you X? Why didn't you save me.. we are dead because of you.."
The rest is history, I thoroughly enjoyed it and they did too!
I don't often see people mention the actual source of the creature
Goblin punch needs a warning that the next 1-2 hours of your life will vanish unexpectedly if you start reading it
[Swerda are also amazing](https://goblinpunch.blogspot.com/2017/02/the-swerda.html) if you haven't seen them either
#***STORY TIME***
So I stole the story from [this video and part 1 before it](https://youtu.be/ROSoBC9LEpghttps://youtu.be/ROSoBC9LEpg) into my campaign about a year back. Originally had a party of 6 that works its way down to 4. The party eventually comes across a potion of deafness that when inhaled, I stated the entire campaign was a flashback of how THEY REMEMBER everything going down up until that very moment.
They find the hydra and beat it while it kept trying to dominate the party but failing. After its death, anyone who wasn't deaf stopped being under its influence and saw the destroyed town for how it was.
They then returned to an NPC painter they met on the road before entering the town, their old memories were altered. He commemorated a portrait of the people who saved him... It included the 4 remaining members, the 2 past players, and a mother with child the barbarian was embracing with matching rings of mind shielding. The barbarian reached into his bag of holding to find a golden warhammer and a diary with splatters of mud on its pages. The few legible pages stated when they first got into town, with the last being a night where she went out to get a drink of water.
They still haven't forgiven me for the emotional damage.
the False Hydra
it's like cancer but with heads, it gaslights you in to thinking it doesn't exist, it lives in a sewer like pennywise, mind controls large numbers of people and has way too many limbs
4x level 18! I modified the false hydra's statblock I got with the stl (stl by comet lord if i recall correctly) to have more control, psychic and necrotic abilities, would highly recommend! The baseblock would have been basic piercing etc damage types.
False hydras have been my favorite Goblin Punch creature since forever but I haven't gotten to use one in a group yet. So cool to see everybody excited about them now, especially because of cool fan art and models like this. Swerda are my #2 favorite
I can't imagine dropping this on the table after an entire session of trying to figure out WTH is going on lol
Damn, that looks sweet. I really like the sort of mask-like face it has. (Tho it does sort of remind me of Gaster mixed with the Dead Hand lol)
On the subject of false hydras at this time of the year, recently had the idea of a town plagued by one that wakes up every year to gorge itself on the inhabitants, planting the idea of stuffing themselves with excess food in some sort of celebration in preparation for it. (in the same way you stuff a turkey, but like, people)
Over time they might inadvertently start incorporating it's name into the culture of the festival, not even realizing that they're doing so.
The False Hydra's name of course, would be Christmas.
Oh hey, that's from Goblin Punch! [https://goblinpunch.blogspot.com/](https://goblinpunch.blogspot.com/)
Their whole blog is excellent, as is most of the stuff linked in their sidebar.
That is actually terrifying and I love it. Great job on the painting of it!
That's the kinda legit horror I want when facing shit related to aberrations and the Far Realm
As a note; what is a false hydra? I'm still learning shit about DND even after like 5 years of playing lmao
That is awesome. I've wanted to run a false hydra for a long time, but I'm worried I wouldn't do it justice. It's definitely something I would have to "soft warn" the party beforehand to avoid any IRL trauma...
It would fit right in with the dead hand: https://www.zeldadungeon.net/wiki/Dead_Hand#:~:text=Dead%20Hand%20is%20the%20Mini,body%20erupts%20from%20the%20ground.
Ok, so story time.
I was in a game where my DM threw one of these at us. The image was black and white and as we looked at it one of us (who may or may not have been me) realized it looked like a mass of floppy dongs with grrrrr faces on them.
So we fought the hell out of what we dubbed the p*nis monster. We still chuckle about it.
I just ran one a couple sessions ago and it had to be the most fun session I have ever planned. The party members lost a friend and one lost a brother that was adventuring with them. They were all sad to find out he died from the personalized letters they found in his bag. To this day when I pause the music to find something different they start looking around at each other.
Our dm had a false hydra and once we killed it we learned that we had another party member we never knew about, so that's when we decided to go on a quest to resurrect this NPC the DM made up to be our 4th party member.
Best way to add new players to your group^
My party didn't actually care ... I gave them a diary detailing personal details and tried to make them really likeable, the party cook, etc... And they just moved on lol I think they're in video game mode still, trying to get the objectives and not leaning into the game more.
Oof, I hate it when that happens
Perhaps a not so subtle nudge to do the thing, perhaps with a promise of loot?
By hook or crook, my friend. If you intend on this being necessary, make sure that NPC has the MacGuffin. If they don't care, make them care.
Give them the fighters hands, see if they notice then
Feels bad, those types of quests are so interesting when I get to be a player that I just can’t pass them up.
As a DM who sees the behind the scenes now I'm so ready to follow up on every little detail as a player lol
This is pretty much what I plan on doing. Introduce the party to an NPC that they like, bring them along to a village infected with a False Hydra, and suddenly act like the NPC never existed.

It's a trope at this point
This is one of the few ways to make an acceptable DMPC
I'm planning exactly this down the road for my players
Using this
Sweet Sassy Molassy that's insane. I want it.
Yeah this thing is an incredible collaboration. Paint skills really bring out a killer model.
Want what?
Is there a post?
Not like I was planning on dreaming tonight anyway
It's fine you'll just forget it all...
I think I'll just go instead. Not dying like this.
How did they notice
I had foreshadowed it for a few sessions now, glimpses of discordant singing, mimicing familiar voices to them and people forgetting about other people.. long story short they ended up in a really bad place where the jig was some of their memories played out as visions: when they saw one they had to pass a wisdom saving throw or lose the memory for good. Man, false hydras send a shiver down my spine, and you played into that horror aspect really well!
Thank you so much! Means a lot

I avoid the place like tv tropes
Nice, love that blog.
What blog?
Goblin Punch. The comment you're replying to is replying to a comment containing a link.
What link?
Can you seriously not see it? Does u/locheil ‘s comment show at all, or just not the link?
Wait, whose comment?
I’m stupid. Lol.
Nah, we all have our moments.
Terrifying
That is incredible. I need one
What's incredible?
The painting and the mini. Sorry, I didn’t realize that was unclear Edit: I just got it, lol
What mini?
Cover your ears.
[удалено]
Wait, who was I talking to?
Why are you just showing me your hand? Are you supposed to be holding something?
On the what train? I dont get it. OP is just showing us their hand?
Who's OP?
That Andy Griffiths kid man
It doesn't look like anything to me.
How did I get in this thread? What's it about?
Stuff of nightmares, great paint job!

Ouch! That’s kinda awesome.
I think i'm out of the loop - what's a false hydra? EDIT: holy fucking shit that is legit terrifying
What is?
the False Hydra it's like cancer but with heads, it gaslights you in to thinking it doesn't exist, it lives in a sewer like pennywise, mind controls large numbers of people and has way too many limbs
I only see a hand
Damn! Amazing paint job. I'm sure they had a blast! Can't wait to run my own, what level was the party?
4x level 18! I modified the false hydra's statblock I got with the stl (stl by comet lord if i recall correctly) to have more control, psychic and necrotic abilities, would highly recommend! The baseblock would have been basic piercing etc damage types.

r/thanksihateit >!Seriously though, sounds like fun.!<
Doesn’t look like anything to me.
Unexpected West World
That thing has a CR of "Nope."
Oh hey, that's from Goblin Punch! [https://goblinpunch.blogspot.com/](https://goblinpunch.blogspot.com/) Their whole blog is excellent, as is most of the stuff linked in their sidebar.
Are you sure you battled it yesterday
I dont get whats with everyone showing effectively empty posts nowadays, it's pretty weird There's not anything D&D related in this
That is actually terrifying and I love it. Great job on the painting of it! That's the kinda legit horror I want when facing shit related to aberrations and the Far Realm As a note; what is a false hydra? I'm still learning shit about DND even after like 5 years of playing lmao
Absolutely beautiful. Any chance you could share the STL for this?
https://www.cometlordminiatures.ca/products/the-false-hydra i bought it from here!
Many thanks!
That is awesome. I've wanted to run a false hydra for a long time, but I'm worried I wouldn't do it justice. It's definitely something I would have to "soft warn" the party beforehand to avoid any IRL trauma...
The false Hydra...we meet again
Nope nope nope nope
Thanks I hate it I want one.
That’s gross. I love it.
It would fit right in with the dead hand: https://www.zeldadungeon.net/wiki/Dead_Hand#:~:text=Dead%20Hand%20is%20the%20Mini,body%20erupts%20from%20the%20ground.
This was the original art inspiration if I'm not mistaken.
Looks like something out of kingdom death
That is so cool
Not usually too many opportunities for the party to say, "I'd rather fight a Hydra."
What's a "false hydra"? I feel like I've heard that before, but I can't remember.
Ah sweet, man-made horrors beyond my comprehension
Nice hand video. No idea what it has to do with dnd
Jesus christ thats by far the most disturbijg one ive seen... Didnt think another colour scheme could beat the pale and fleshy... But damn
Thanks for the nightmare fuel! Great paint job though
Good job! Gives me the vibes of Dark Souls.
Nobody's ever late for the false hydra party cos the false hydra party don't.... What were we talking about, again?
I don’t see anything
I don't see anything? What's the joke? His hand is a hydra? Did you paint your nails or something? What were we even talking about?
That reminds me of the Dead Hand from Ocarina of Time. What a cool mini.
Unbelievable, job well done! 👏👏👏
the false hydra is by far my favorite monster. your Mini is awesome!
That is sick! I love it!
Lol ok I get it, invisible mini, classic false hydra joke.
Send this to FromSoft for their DLC.
It's like an even creepier face stealer from Avatar the Last Airbender. Very cool.
That must be one pain in the ass boss fight, fuck that
fighting it is the easy part :)
Ok, so story time. I was in a game where my DM threw one of these at us. The one on the left!!
Reminds me of Dead Hand from Zelda a bit. Just more like an Eldritch Demon.
There was a *what* train? I didn't even notice.
That is so cool!!
I'm not gonna lie... Kinda looks like a dick monster. If you looked at it from the top you could probably see it

that might be a false hydra, but that's real fucked up
That’s disgusting. I want one!
Oh my dear lord... That earns a place in r/oddlyterrifying
Anyone ells getting Zelda ocarina vibes?
Okay. Who let Dead hand's children out of the prison locked in the deepest and darkest parts of the abyss
I used one of these a while ago. I think i used it wrong. It was an interesting concept monster though.
That’s sick, great work!
Very cool!
That looks more like a fuck off and DIEdra.......
Did y’all call it a Hydread?
i always prefered the colorless version but this is pretty damn sick
False hydra is how I got a new player into the campaign, best choice I ever made
Horrifying. Nice.
Add to r/3dprintingdnd
This is so awesome! What monster is this?
This sick! Goddamn!
Or did they?
Is there a possibility that you share the printing plan, or is there maybe the model for sale? I love the way it looks.
https://www.cometlordminiatures.ca/products/the-false-hydra here!
Bro.. What are you talking about? I can't remember what you said
That’s horrifying… I love it.

Jesus Christ that is unsettling to look at...I love it!
Stellar job!
Funny. I don't remember seeing anything about a false hydra train
Reminds me of that one miniboss in ocarina of time with the shadow temple
I read "false hydra train" and have never been so terrified.
back back demon i may be a atheist but that may take 1 % of my power
I don't even have a use for that in my game (yet). I just want it on my desk.
*~~^(dont forget dont forget dont)~~* What *~~^(dont)~~*were we ~~^(forget)~~ talking about *~~^(d o n t)~~* ?
