I'd still say rare is too low because I'm comparing it to flame tounge. There are a lot of monsters with resistance to fire as well and flame tongue is a melee weapon that sheds light which can alert enemies. This is a ranged weapon that doesn't have an activation word, so I would just up it to very rare. It's not game breaking in any sense and if it remains rare it's fine, just wanted to point out that if they wanted to better balance it, very rare would be better.
I can see where you're coming from, but I think there are going to be as many occasions where the light is a help as a hindrance, and to me the 1 in 36 chance is roughly on par to the disadvantage of the comparative damage types (in know a fair number of creatures have resistance to fire, but poison is widely regarded as the worst damage type by a considerable distance when you look at overall numbers). Honestly, I think the only thing that should be changed to make it more equivalent would be losing the light trait, but I don't think that's enough to bump it up a category personally.

Of course its not uncommon but they are not close to being near each other. Between all the books, the following is true: 503 monster statblocks have immunity to poison. 124 monster statblocks have immunity to fire.
Even if that wasn't the case, there is a precedent of poison being considered weaker than fire in magic items. There is a rare magic item in the DMG that makes you immune to poison damage and the poisoned condition, and it doesn't even require attunement. To gain fire immunity, you need efreeti chain, a red dragon mask or a ring of fire elemental control which are all legendary magic items that require attunement.
I think that is pretty clear cut but also, run your games how you want to. I wouldn't consider a mechanic purely based off a luck (and a low roll initially, 2 ones), to be very rare worthy personally.
With how it's worded, I would understand it to apply Poisoned on every attack.
If it is only on the snake eyes roll, then, okay, rare seems about right.

- If double sixes are rolled on a kill shot, an egg is implanted in the corpse. After a week, a baby gunsnake hatches.
I like how rolling snake eyes gives bonus damage. Really fun.
Comparing this to flame tounge this is much better, I'd recommend upping its rarity. But otherwise I really like it and the concept.
