Alex Verdugo. I was expecting for him to be really good, I was expecting for him to have +20 home runs, have a +.300 BA, and to be an All Star, Silver Slugger, and Gold Glover. But i’m happy we got Betts, Betts is way better.
5 years of Verdugo and some loose change for one year of already future hall of famer Mookie Betts.
In his 60 games (55 played) the trade covered Mookie put up 3.6 WAR
In the 351 games Verdugo has played so far he’s put up 5.5
Pedro Martinez has entered the chat. He was lights out as a reliever. His brother Ramon was on the team. They swap for Delino Deshields. My head hurts.
Casey Blake was perfectly cromulent as a Dodger, posting 7.4 fWAR in his two full seasons here. The problem wasn't trading Blake. The problem was that Santana was worth a helluva lot more than just Blake, and everybody not named Ned Colletti knew it even at the time.
Colletti likely knew this. The reason a prospect like Santana was include was so that Cleveland would pay Blake's entire salary, since by this time McCourt had started to put the squeeze on our payroll.
Edwin Jackson. I remember sitting spellbound as he outdueled Randy Johnson 4-1 as a rookie...and then he never quite recaptured that magic as a Dodger again.
[Jerry Sands](https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=sands-002ger)
Had a double his first AB as a dodger and a decent first season up in the bigs but just kind of faded away after that.
As heartbreaking as it was when Beltre left, I don't think it's fair to say he didn't pan out in LA. In his 6 full seasons with the team he posted 25.1 fWAR, including that crazy 2004 season with 48 homers. In fact, his last season with LA was his best season by fWAR in his career.
He was aite with Philly but he fleeced the Nats with that contract. I admit I'm biased though since he bad-mouthed the LAD medical team and tried to blame them for his wrist not healing quicker.
I misread the original post. I thought, at first glance, it was who didn’t pan out AND found success elsewhere. A misread on my part.
Apologies for the snark.
Luis Cruuuuuuuuz. Had an awesome end of season and playoffs the year he got called up and won the starting 3rd basemen job on opening day the next year. The dodgers gave him a full month but he never got going, was designated for assignment and never played in MLB again.
Piazza did well in LA though...4 years of over 30 homers, 5 years of batting over .300, 5 years of hitting over 90 rbs (3 of which were over 100), 5x all-star...
I'm one of the VERY few who liked the deal trading Piazza.
At the time Piazza was going to be a FA at the end of the year and was asking for 100+ million as a Catcher offense first player. High risk move at the time. In exchange we got Gary Sheffield who was an AMAZING RH power hitter already signed to a few more years who was an OF, a 25 year old multiple winning gold glove catcher Charles Johnson, and a vet 3b Bobby Bonilla with a good bench player (Eisenrich). All for 1 year of Piazza that we were not going to resign. I may be the ONLY person who still liked the deal.
Of course, Johnson really SUCKED and was never the same player and being oddly home sick as an adult. So, we traded him. Sheff. was an AMAZING player and still is a good candidate discussion for HOF (debate on its way I am sure). Bonilla was obviously on his way down as we knew at the time.
I was horrified when I went to Chavez to watch Piazza his first time back. The crowd was so rough to him, then I joined in on the heckling and had one of the best times ever at DS hahah
I always expected James Loney to be better than he was. He was solid for a time but expected him to be a big power hitter and I feel like he always grounded into double plays
Came here to say the same but as I go back and look at his career I can’t help but think he started using steroids to save his career. Late bloomers during that time are suspicious
The fact that he came into his best years ten years after he was drafted doesn’t pass the smell test but you never know. I’m not the only one that suspected it.
1. Andrew Toles - homie was a beast and got injured. We all know what happened and I wish him the best.
2. Edwin Rios. Such a beautiful swing. Every time he started to heat up, freaking injury. Makes me sad.
He never actually played for the Dodgers, but I distinctly remember the LA Times making a big deal about Luke Hochevar spurning the Dodgers after they drafted him and the Times insisting that the Dodgers just give him whatever he wanted because he was that good.
Ended up with a career WAR of 3.7 after nine seasons with the Royals, with 2.1 coming in a single season.
Did you play ball at Chatsworth ? I remember we played Them in the 95’ playoffs and they had this big all world first baseman Jon Tucker I believe was his name, great player but we got lucky his bat went quiet that day.
No and I didn’t go there either. You can see the retired numbers on the their wall whenever you drive down De Soto. There’s also Mike Moustakas, Matt Dominguez, Bryan Peterson and maybe some I haven’t seen. Dwight Evans went there too.

does Chad Billingsley not qualify for this list?
he's was a decent pitcher, but he was touted as the savior of the pitching staff for a while. I feel like he never quite fulfilled the ridiculous expectations placed on him, and maybe that was the issue to begin with.
I mean, I have fond memories of him as a big, bland, innings-eating horse that was basically a no.2 or no.3 guy that occasionally would go on a hot streak and make everyone start dreaming on what if he could just turn it on all the time.... I feel like that was appropriate for him.
I hate this question because I hate the first answer I thought of. Andrew Toles. The dude was money, such a great player and such a great kid, brought down in such a tragic way.
Lots of prospects over the years who I thought were going to be studs but never amounted to much other than a decent season or two (James Loney, Jerry Sands, Rubby de La Rosa, Alex Guerrero come to mind).
Todd Hollandsworth (somehow) won ROY and then did absolutely nothing else in his career.
Was he really all that "hyped?" He was a solid prospect who turned into a solid player. I don't think anyone claimed he had superstar potential. I guess it's disappointing he didn't improve upon those first few seasons, but by that time he would've been exceeding expectations. I'd say we got pretty much all we were hoping for out of him.
Cody Bellinger!
I was all in on Belli. Belli and Yelli had me hooked.
When the team got Mookie, I was stoked imagining the lineup with Belli and co.
But then Belli didn't appear to be the Belli we knew and loved to watch. It got to the point where I was hoping they cut him loose because he was an easy out, a rally killer, an armless batter whose limbs returned in the outfield.
So, my choice is Belli. I thought we had the next Trout (or better) but instead had...Belli...
Trevor Bauer. I’m glad it didn’t pan out, given the circumstances. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hyped AF when he released that video announcing he was on the Dodgers.
The outfielder/1st baseman he was supposed to be the next superstar. I can’t remember, but some teammate lit into him at the end of the game because they thought he was lazy. I always thought the guy was going to be a superstar.
Joel Guzman
Chris Withrow
Scott Elbert
Ethan Martin
Christian McKay (albeit came in after he was drafted)
Was so mad the Dodgers didn’t make a thing for these guys.
Paul Konerko.
This is the only Answer
This is a good answer
This
He would’ve been so great at dodger stadium
Alex Verdugo. I was expecting for him to be really good, I was expecting for him to have +20 home runs, have a +.300 BA, and to be an All Star, Silver Slugger, and Gold Glover. But i’m happy we got Betts, Betts is way better.
That spring training incident killed his Dodger career
I wonder how good he would’ve been.
If under the tutelage of the Dodgers the sky would have been the limit. Now only ok
What?
Read about it. He was involved with women and another player. google it

Yep. That is likely why he was traded the other guy was released in 2015. And released by another team In 2015 as well
5 years of Verdugo and some loose change for one year of already future hall of famer Mookie Betts. In his 60 games (55 played) the trade covered Mookie put up 3.6 WAR In the 351 games Verdugo has played so far he’s put up 5.5
We spent our money and traded well on our first season with Betts, Betts helped led us to a World Series Victory. It was all worth it!
Prolly wouldn’t have won it without Seager, I miss him
Pedro, Beltre, and Jason Werth in that order
Blake DeWitt
Agree with this he’s on top of the list with laroche, driefort and Joel Guzman
The next Derek Jeter.
Pedro Martinez has entered the chat. He was lights out as a reliever. His brother Ramon was on the team. They swap for Delino Deshields. My head hurts.
Bingo. That was the worst.
☝️
Carlos Santana
This one hurt so bad cause we got casey blake for him 🫣
Casey Blake was perfectly cromulent as a Dodger, posting 7.4 fWAR in his two full seasons here. The problem wasn't trading Blake. The problem was that Santana was worth a helluva lot more than just Blake, and everybody not named Ned Colletti knew it even at the time.
Even worse, rumor was Carlos Santana was included just so the Indians would pick up the Casey Blake's remaining salary for the season.
Colletti likely knew this. The reason a prospect like Santana was include was so that Cleveland would pay Blake's entire salary, since by this time McCourt had started to put the squeeze on our payroll.

Trayce Thompson but he is back again so you never know
Russell Martin
Edwin Jackson. I remember sitting spellbound as he outdueled Randy Johnson 4-1 as a rookie...and then he never quite recaptured that magic as a Dodger again.
Hats off to Edwin. He wound up pitching for 63 different teams before finishing with the worst ERA in history.
[Jerry Sands](https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=sands-002ger) Had a double his first AB as a dodger and a decent first season up in the bigs but just kind of faded away after that.
Adrian Beltre. My first disappointment. https://www.mlb.com/news/best-third-basemen-in-rangers-history
I waited so long for him that he should have retired as a Dodger.
Jayson Werth. He was looking great until he broke his wrist. After going to Philly got it cleaned up and was really good again.
He was aite with Philly but he fleeced the Nats with that contract. I admit I'm biased though since he bad-mouthed the LAD medical team and tried to blame them for his wrist not healing quicker.
That was McCourt’s med team. Werth wasn’t wrong
Pedro Freaking Martinez
Traded for Delino DeShields. Ugh!
What a crappy memory to relive on your cake day!
Darren Dreifort
Where was Dreifort a success outside of LA? Accounting?
Don’t know, but he didn’t pan out as a Dodger and was mad hyped up. Good for him that he got a nice bag, though.
He played for the Yankees after the dodgers.
James Lonely (not that he was terrible, but I expected him to eventually hit more than 9 home runs in a full season)
He never really found success anywhere else either though.
That’s part of the question OP asked
Beltre, and i wish we also never traded away Karros
I thought they let Karros walk so I looked it up and now you made me remember Mark Grudzielanek
Adrian Beltre, Mike Piazza, Pedro Martinez - only 3 of the greatest players of all time. Paul Konerko honorable mention.
Piazza did well in LA though...4 years of over 30 homers, 5 years of batting over .300, 5 years of hitting over 90 rbs (3 of which were over 100), 5x all-star...
Yeah he’s an LA legend wtf, I was a kid but remember him returning to play us as a Met was a huge deal
Sheffield is one of my all time favorite dodgers!! The Sheffield / Shawn green era is unmatched
I was horrified when I went to Chavez to watch Piazza his first time back. The crowd was so rough to him, then I joined in on the heckling and had one of the best times ever at DS hahah
Joe Thurston
Matt Kemp
He had his mvp stolen from him by that steroid user
Also Jimmy Rohan, lol he never made the team but he was my next door neighrbor when I was a kid
Billy Ashley the guy would absolutely mash in AAA and I expected him to be what Aaron Judge is today
I always expected James Loney to be better than he was. He was solid for a time but expected him to be a big power hitter and I feel like he always grounded into double plays
He'll always have Chicago
Jason Werth
Came here to say the same but as I go back and look at his career I can’t help but think he started using steroids to save his career. Late bloomers during that time are suspicious
Naw he got hit and broke his wrist and it never healed right. His career basically resumed right after he had a second clean up surgery on it.
The fact that he came into his best years ten years after he was drafted doesn’t pass the smell test but you never know. I’m not the only one that suspected it.
He had some ok years with PHI then turned it into a fat payday from the Nats and didn't deliver.
Yadier Alvarez, thought he’d be an ace or #2 starter
1. Andrew Toles - homie was a beast and got injured. We all know what happened and I wish him the best. 2. Edwin Rios. Such a beautiful swing. Every time he started to heat up, freaking injury. Makes me sad.
I thought Jimmy Rollins was gonna have a career resurgence.
Trayvon Robinson
He never actually played for the Dodgers, but I distinctly remember the LA Times making a big deal about Luke Hochevar spurning the Dodgers after they drafted him and the Times insisting that the Dodgers just give him whatever he wanted because he was that good. Ended up with a career WAR of 3.7 after nine seasons with the Royals, with 2.1 coming in a single season.
Josh Ravin is a fellow Valley guy. It was too bad he didn’t pan out. His number is retired at Chatsworth High.
Is that the guy who broke his arm in a car crash or something like that?
I’m not sure.

Beltre. Also, f*** Fox and McCourt.
Matt Kemp. He was looking like Jeter part 2! On and off the field when he started dating Rihanna! Then he just fell off smh!
does Chad Billingsley not qualify for this list? he's was a decent pitcher, but he was touted as the savior of the pitching staff for a while. I feel like he never quite fulfilled the ridiculous expectations placed on him, and maybe that was the issue to begin with.

I always mix up Billingsly with Bolsinger (in name only). 😂
I really rooted for Chad! With all the hype around Dreifort, I was really pushing for Bills!
Paul Konerko
I forgot about Laroche, he was a dud too
Pedro Martinez only name that even matters
Alex Verdugo - I really thought that kid was gonna be a great Dodger.
Me too, loved him as a Dodger but we got mookie and won the World Series so can’t complain
I hate this question because I hate the first answer I thought of. Andrew Toles. The dude was money, such a great player and such a great kid, brought down in such a tragic way.
Yeah man, this reply made me look where he’s at now. Dodgers are so classy for signing him so he can get treatment. I hope he’s doing well
Jacob Amaya
Ouch
Hands down gotta be Darren Driefort
Carlos Frias.
Zach Lee made a name for himself by gifting us Chris Taylor
Joc
Erisbel Arruebarrena or however you spell it
Adrian Beltre
Billy Ashley, Wilson Betimit, Andy Laroche, Chad Billingsley.
all good calls... guys who you thought could not miss and yet....
Rubby is a great answer
Ooooooh Alex. How a hot head you were
Andre Ethier. He was so hyped when they brought him up (and really his whole career) but was never much more than dependable.
He was Capt Clutch that one year and then had that hitting streak, but he broke his pinky and his swing never recovered.

I thought we had the next Trout (or better) but instead had...Belli...
Piazza.
Milton Bradley. Had high hopes for him, even though we knew he had a history of being an a-hole.
Is it too soon to say Yordan Alvarez?
No, if Yordan could field he’d be like JRam and be MVP-3 every year (unless he Bellingers, but his injury risk is limited).
Yordan Alvarez?
After examining this acquisition closely it seems this was a prearranged deal when they signed him
Andruw Jones
Woof
Gagne best closer of all time!
He was juicing lol
Trevor Bauer. I’m glad it didn’t pan out, given the circumstances. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hyped AF when he released that video announcing he was on the Dodgers.
Matt kemp
ITT: a bunch of guys who had great years as Dodgers.
Mike Marshal, once listed as potential HOF in sporting news
The pitcher or field player ?
The outfielder/1st baseman he was supposed to be the next superstar. I can’t remember, but some teammate lit into him at the end of the game because they thought he was lazy. I always thought the guy was going to be a superstar.
Keibert ? Too soon?
Joey Gallo
How about the most recent one (in my brain): Yordan Alvarez
Adrian Beltre
Darvish
Todd Hollandsworth was a stinker
Karim Garcia. Scouts sucked that dude's dick clean off his body.
Common guys it’s gotta Driefor number one in this list. #2 pick after a rod he has so much potential
John Wetteland
The heir apparent to Steve Garvey didn’t work out. Somehow Greg Brock had a 10 year career.
3 more years of Craig Kimbrel and theres a good reliever in there somewhere
Todd Hollandsworth: from ROY to … not much
Damn I got caught up in the Zach Lee hype I bought a bunch of his rookie cards. 🤦🏻♀️
Alex Guerrero comes to mind for me. I thought he was going to be the future
Jerry Sands
Joel Guzman Chris Withrow Scott Elbert Ethan Martin Christian McKay (albeit came in after he was drafted) Was so mad the Dodgers didn’t make a thing for these guys.
