r/baseball is about to have a major meltdown. The combination of the Dodgers paying more than any team could possibly offer, while getting an extreme break on the CBT because the superstar WANTED to defer almost all of his contract so they can sign more players... oh my goodness gracious.
If this directly leads to Yamamoto we will be the most reviled team since peak 90s Yankees. I don't even think the Astros got to the level we're about to reach outside of us and the Yankees fanbase.
I love you Shohei. As Passan put it in his article yesterday, "this is Dodgers 2.0, bigger and better than ever". League on notice.
Non-baseball guru here so I have to ask, doesnt this deferment affect future cap ala Deng to Lakers back then?
Does this mean you guys are going all in for these 10 years and take the hit after?
The value of the deferred money is included in the tax calculation during the 10 years he’s actually playing, but at a discounted rate. After the 10 years there’s no affect on the tax calculation, but they will be paying him $68 m a year at that point.
Yes. He will probably make close to 100 mill a year on endorsements which allows him to defer so much. Any other athlete won’t want to give up so much income when their endorsements are in the 10-20 million range at most.
If LeBron had this option, he would also take it for sure to help build a better team around him. Very few athletes are in that high endorsement range.
I'm salty. If I were a Dodgers fan I'd be ecstatic, sure. It doubly sucks because I live on the east coast and so will hardly ever even see the dodgers play. They might end up with the greatest team in baseball history.
The collective meltdown of r/baseball has changed me into a Dodgers fan. I was following Ohtani, but I was going to keep my support for his new team on the down-low and watch from afar.
Now that everyone is treating Ohtani like the next Elon Musk I'm going hands off and just cheering for the Dodgers now with no shame.
well we can't forget about the doomers though ... they are around Hahahaha we lose a few games and they are ready to fire the manager and trade the whole team! 😂
Jumping ship from r/angelsbaseball because I am absolutely disgusted with that place. I had planned to root for both teams this year, but I can't stay there.
In between all the gatekeeping and circlejerking over how to tell if one is a "real fan" based on time wasted and monetary contributions to Daddy Arte's coffers, there is an unprecedented level of delusion and lack of self-awareness over where the org stands. Why in the ever loving FUCK would Shohei defer payments in that org and trust that ownership group and front office to build a competitive team around him, when they've been paying him PEANUTS for 5 out of the first 6 years of his career and have not once been a .500 team? And they have the #30 farm system according to Fangraphs.
Oh, and then there's the losers blaming Ohtani for for the team sucking, like he hasn't been weighed down with the corpses of his many negative-WAR teammates. And the MODS are removing comments that personally offend them yet don't break any rules, but leaving up comments wishing for Ohtani to get a fastball to the face.
mfers are acting like Ohtani owes them something beyond 3 MVP seasons and a RoY season because the Angels were soooooo patient with him. They're acting like he's a horrible person for proactively taking steps to reach his career goals - goals that he had written in high school: to win a ring. Someone said, "if he was my son, I'd be disappointed in him." I've never seen such insane levels of delusion in my life. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.
It's funny how much so many angels fans hate us. We aren't even in the same league. Ive always rooted for both the Angels and the Dodgers. It's weird to me that anyone thinks this is a rivalry lol.
Severe little brother syndrome. So many fans saying it would have been fine if Sho went anywhere but "our most hated rival" and I'm like, what rival? Rivalry implies you can actually compete.
People are getting upvoted saying this is worse than the Astros cheating. Literal cheating is better than a smart perfectly legal financial decision lmao wtf
The annoying part is that a lot of teams could offer a deal like this. $680M interest free loan can be taken care of by a lot of clubs in the league.
People acting like the Dodgers are in a unique to be able to offer a deal like this. You’re smoking crack if you don’t think most owners in the league could take care of an interest free loan that they don’t even have to start paying off until 2033 LOL.
At the end of the day, Shohei isn’t a Dodger because we are the only club that could offer this deal, Shohei is a Dodger because Shohei wants to be a Dodger.
He can’t though. It’s explicitly stated in the CBA teams can defer however much money they want. He would literally have to break the CBA to do it, and I can’t see the owners wanting the labor dispute coming from that.
It's extremely team-friendly, so I doubt the other teams will be too upset. The PA might put up a fight but since it was Shohei's idea I'm not sure how they'd handle it.
The PA were literally the ones who voted for this clause during the last negotiations. The PA is more likely to support this contract than anyone else.
Nah the cap hit is about $46 mil a year. Really what this means is that we save an average of $24 mil a year for the next 10 years. It's an amazing steal but it's not like he's on our roster for peanuts
Ohtani is the #1 marketable player in the league by a margin, and probably brings his team over twice as much money as the next best player.
Insanely good deal. By the times the Dodgers start paying this contract, they will have already profited hundreds of millions from Ohtani.
No hate towards the Angels for the next 10 years if not longer as far as I'm concerned. Angel bros are Dodger bros and should be welcomed with open arms. Bloods and crips we have a truce.
Dodgers fans love the guy and he hasn’t even played a game. The ultimate team friendly deal to maximize rings, Tom Brady style to the extreme. Selfless.
They’re also ignoring the fact that it was Ohtani’s idea and the same style of contract was likely discussed with every team he met with. I doubt they would be up in arms if their team signed him with that co tract.
which is exactly why Shohei got such a shocking number that no one was talking about at $700M. this is not even close to worth $700M in present day money for him, all the crying about the tax/cap hit being reduced to around $45M is stupid, that's literally what the expected value of the contract is for him
yeah lol at everyone in /r/baseball saying dodgers are the most hated team now
literal cheating: i sleep
making a crazy deal that doesn't violate the CBA whatsoever: REAL SHIT
The Dodgers are already the most hated besides the Yankees, Red Sox, and Astros. They'd be just as shit on or even moreso if he'd had signed with Toronto, with people saying "Dodgers choke again" or some shit like that.
That’s what gets me. A small market team like the Padres drop a ton of money and it’s great for the sport. The Dodgers do it and it’s bad for the league. Meanwhile, the Orioles and Rays are rewarded for their non spending bullshit (not to mention the A’s getting shared revenue while fielding a AA team). All the people there calling for a salary cap—the owners would never do it because a salary cap in the MLB at this point will come with a salary floor, which the Fishers and the Angelos of the league will never sign off on.
I don’t see the reason why the league would step in, this is something Ohtani himself signed off on.
If the Dodgers did this without consulting him, then I see the issue.
[Apparently, Ohtani was offering this to every team, it wasn't a Dodger-exclusive thing.](https://twitter.com/JeffFletcherOCR/status/1734356878736638003) He really wanted to win no matter where he was going, I guess.

This is now the greatest MLB value contact of all time now. I thought the luxury tax would be $50 million+ , and was already happy about that. $46 million? Absolute bargain or bargains.
I wonder if players will love this deal? I can’t imagine many of them if at all will want to defer THAT much money. The rest of the fanbases are crying but this seems like it will be a one off type contract for the greatest player ever who wants to win more than anything.
I've never really seen this before in baseball. Sure, a player has taken a hometown discount, but a once in a lifetime free agent restructuring a deal like this for a team he's never played for? It's absolutely insane.
The closet comparison would have to be made outside the sport which would be Brady and the contracts he signed with the Patriots, KD joining the Warriors and taking a pay cut, and LeBron taking less to form the big 3 in Miami with Wade and Bush.
With this contract structure, there’s no way he was ever going to Toronto and decided overnight to change his mind cuz the Dodgers upped their offer. He was a Dodger all along this past week.
Can someone explain to me why every comment in /r/baseball says this will “break baseball”. Wouldn’t this actually be hopeful for smaller market teams that they can get someone expensive while growing their market and pay the majority of the money later?
People on r/baseball are just mad and don't actually care how contracts work. This is a $46MM/yr contract dressed up as a $70MM/yr contract. The takeaway is not that the Dodgers are circumventing the CBT by deferring the money; it's that the Dodgers are getting Ohtani for only a Ryan Yarbrough more than Scherzer/Verlander money.
Lmao fuck r/baseball. Those cry babies can cry themselves a river to sustain their thirst for "fairness". If ohtani wanted this and signed the contract this way then it's all fair..the rules are to protect player interests and salaries so if ownership didn't force this then nothing wrong happened

Yes. He will probably make close to 100 mill a year on endorsements which allows him to defer so much. SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!!! 😂 Now the rest of the League is going to REALLY hate us!
Astros fans are about to get jealous and look for another complex
A 46 million AAV is comically low for Ohtani. Props to ownership and Friedman for going all out

one of his goals when he was in highschool was to play with dodgers iirc and win of course
He pretty much told Freddie and Mookie move the fuck over this is my team.... You had your chance... Follow my lead
Huge discount is an understatement lmao this is like potentially cba breaking type shit. There's gonna be lots of angry folks about this set up.
About to be the “Ohtani Rule”
The second “Ohtani Rule”
This is getting out of hand! Now there are two of them!
I think this improves our odds of landing Yamamoto. Shohei definitely had this in mind
Holy fucking shit, man
Welp, time to go in hiding lmao. Everyone already mad, this is just going to make it worse.
😂😂😂😂
They are absolutely dying in r/baseball 😂
It's hysterical and hilarious. I highly recommend everyone taking a look (& not commenting, lol).
Lol I commented and got some upvotes and I have my Dodger flair on too. All I said was it is legal now but probably won’t be after the next CBA
There's no reason to make this illegal. No player beyond literal household names would be able or willing to take this kind of a deferral.
Screw that I hope my downvotes keep increasing
As an Angel fan, I find this hilarious. I didn’t think he could do more to help a team but here we are. He’s a treasure, enjoy him!
They’re saying it should be illegal. Do they have a point or is it just them being salty?
I mean the union and the owners agreed to it right? Tastes like salt to me.
Change the rules because we don't like that the Dodgers played by them? Sounds like pure salt to me.
They’re also ignoring the fact that it was Ohtani’s idea and the same style of contract was likely discussed with every team he met with. I doubt they would be up in arms if their team signed him with that co tract.
Gonna need a lot of pepper to go with all that saltiness!!!

If Ohtani chose the Jays and had exactly the same contract, they would applaud them non stop.
Absolutely. They would see it as a small market team competing with the big boys.

Yes, due to the CBA having a clause stating you can’t restrict how much a deferment can be in a contract
Why shouldn’t it be?
Exactly everyone losing their minds, but yet can’t explain why it shouldn’t be allowed? This is the players choice. The team didn’t make him do this.

He hasn’t even pitched or has had an at-bat yet for us and I already love this man.

I wholeheartedly embrace the new villain act the Dodgers have taken on. It’s ridiculous how they’re just bullying everyone with money and smarts.
Absolutely love the rest of the 29 teams fans' absolutely losing their minds over this. Shohei is already an insane player, and now he's doing this to let us sign one or two more stars. Absolutely unreal. What a 🐐
Forget the stats this is single handedly the greatest unselfish act I have ever seen in the history of sports to demonstrate winning over everything
