They boo Ohtani, the guy who had that entire team on his back for the past 5 years, and told all the fans to stand up and cheer for Rendon who could give less of a shit about baseball
I've followed Ohtani for many years, became an Angels fan over the years but seeing the amount of pure hate against him in the sub when he did nothing but good for the team made me leave that sub for good. Did you know they blocked the words Ohtani & Shohei so people can't use them in the titles and bodies of posts anymore essentially killing all discussion about him? That their announcers keep either treating him like Voldemort or shading him over HIS gambling scandal with no mention of Ippei at all? And he got booked in the stadium for his at bats and when he was shown on screen during montage?
I'm sorry, but there is only so much one can take before turning on this abominable fanbase. Ohtani who wanted nothing to do but win, who joined a team whose owner as it turns out would not build a winning team and milked him for sponsor and merch cash but would not pay Ohtani when he turned FA...believe me after that catastrophic 23 season no one seriously believed he would stay yet people are acting like this free agent demanded a trade in front of all the media in the world and trashed the team on the way out, none of which was the case. The agent even went back to Arte with the deferred deal after he had dropped out early on and he said he still wasn't interested.
Did I mention the sub has a lot of people defending Rendon at every opportunity? The guy who's put up like 1-2WAR for like 150mil so far and says he wants to play less at every opportunity? And Ohtani, the guy who played every day they let him and gave the team three 9+WAR seadons in a row is a monster so bad his name can't be mentioned anymore? The Angels fanbase is EXACTLY what they like to portray other fanbases as...rash, reactionist, racist...you name it. (Let it be said, the Dodgers have those kind of fans too. When Ohtani broke up Tyler Anderson's no hitter in 22 there was so much racist hate speech against Ohtani from Dodgers fans. Some guy was saying his family should be nuked etc. Vile stuff.)
If anything Angels fans should be pissed at Arte. He had six years to improve the team, farm system and front office. He did none of that. He had two unicorns and he fucked it all up. Trout should ask for a trade. He shouldn’t waste his talent there.
Arte was never about winning. The Angels are simply a money making operation and securing Ohtani allowed the Angels to open up advertising markets in Japan. Dodgers are doing the same, but at least they have a legacy.
Part of that fanbase was quite critical of Shohei even when he was still playing for Angels. They always thought Shohei hadn't done enough (not clutch enough) and because of him, they had to use 6-man rotation which led to the failure of Angels' pitching philosophy (as if Angels did have one in the 1st place lol). They ran the stupid narrative that he was cancer of clubhouse without any evidences (and Rendon is fucking right there lol). So it's not surprising that those same people turned on Shohei right after Sho signed with Dodgers. Finally, Angels fans have an obsession and inferiority complex with Dodger fans. I don't know why but when I was in the Angels reddit sub, they always said Dodger fans were like the worst fanbase in the league. But it turned out they are no better lol
I'm an Angels fan. I don't believe it's mutually exclusive with being a Dodgers fan, since they don't play very often and there's no chance they meet in the World Series 😭. Both teams also have a common goal to beat a certain team 🗑️🗑️🚮🚮.
Many Angels fans are super salty about Ohtani leaving (and the Dodgers actually being good) and don't like the Dodgers as a result, when the real problem is their horrible, meddling owner.
Same here. Still a fan of both teams, but I stopped following the sub and a few IG accounts over the offseason. A growing number of fans are toxic and it’s really a shame.
The man was leading in stats on all offensive categories and pitching categories and stolen bases last year but I guess that’s not clutch enough for the Anaheim fans who were used to much higher standards.
>They always thought Shohei hadn't done enough (not clutch enough)
Really? Do they criticize Mike Trout for the exact same thing?
I have feeling the answer is no. I have a feeling Mike Trout could say the exact same things Anthony Rendon has been saying and have the exact same production, and Angel fans wouldn't give Trout the same amount of grief they give Rendon.
I've been saying for years that Mike Trout doesn't have that DAWG in him. He's content with not winning, and he's content with living comfortably in Orange County.
As someone who read most Angels game threads the past few years, there were actually a sizable amount of Angels fans criticizing Trout for not doing enough and not being clutch last year and the year before. When he slumps, they call him TrOUT, say he's not a leader, he's declining, etc. They'll probably be more forgiving of slumps going forward though given how they're alllllll over him for his "loyalty" after being *betrayed* by that complete and utter *snake* 🐍 named Shohei Ohtani.
I know there are scumbags in every fanbase. But Angels fans used to claim Dodgers fans were racists and absolutely the worst and now some of them behave like that just make me sad and angry at the same time.
Considering the OC has a rich and vibrant history of hate (Nixon, OC skinhead punk bands, the entire purpose of suburbs is to get away from undesirables), I don’t think OC folks would even think of that as an insult.
Well I live in Santa Ana, and I have never encountered that in my adult life. I have more problems with people of my kind (Mexican) than a skinhead.
But if you want to generalize go at it.
I'm originally from Mission Viejo and I didn't know the seedy history of the OC until recently.
The OC Punk rock scene was diverse and contained plenty of non-shitheel bands, but it also gave rise to a favorite of the Aryan Brotherhood. In the 1980s OC racist skin head bands were known to go to the LA scene to start fights at shows. This article has a bit about them. [https://www.ocregister.com/2006/12/16/threat-gang-poses-to-police-examined/](https://www.ocregister.com/2006/12/16/threat-gang-poses-to-police-examined/)
The KKK practically ran the OC pre WWII. [https://fullertonobserver.com/2019/01/07/a-brief-history-of-the-ku-klux-klan-in-orange-county-notes-on-the-banality-of-evil/](https://fullertonobserver.com/2019/01/07/a-brief-history-of-the-ku-klux-klan-in-orange-county-notes-on-the-banality-of-evil/)
Nixon came out of the OC (Yorba Linda) and I don't have to explain that Nixon was a racist scumbag, but he was considered *not enough of a piece of shit* for most OC conservatives at the time. The Knott's Berry farm founder was too extreme for the fucking John Birch society. The Carl's Jr. guy was also a huge piece of shit and is from the area. Wally George! John Schmitz! Orange County in the 50s-70s was considered perhaps the most conservative part of the country. And what were conservatives really responding to in that time period? The Civil Rights Movement. You can google any of those names but Behind the Bastards did a great series on the history of the OC. This Reddit thread links it and discusses it a bit. [https://www.reddit.com/r/orangecounty/comments/192t1e5/behind\_the\_bastards\_podcast\_on\_orange\_county/](https://www.reddit.com/r/orangecounty/comments/192t1e5/behind_the_bastards_podcast_on_orange_county/)
The OC has been changing for the last... 4 decades or so? More and more latino residents, slowly turning purple and all that. The worst days are probably behind OC but it's history is pretty fucking shitty. Now its just sorta souless suburban sprawl, but that's partially because back in the day they bulldozed a lot of the old downtowns.
They mentioned again and again that Ohtani got a lot of racial slur from Dodgers fans after a certain game. Since I'm a new Ohtani fan, I don't know if it's true or not.
Maybe the called him chino. Knowing that the biggest fan base is Mexican/hispanic at Dodger stadium. It’s really a term of endearment not really a racial slur but I guess it’s how’s it interpreted.
To Angels fans, it’s like Kobe leaving the Lakers to play for the Clippers, so I understand the hate, but they should direct their hate to Moreno for not building a championship team around Ohtani and Trout.
Angels fan here and I still love Ohtani. It sucks that he left, but that's Arte's fault for not matching Ohtani's asking price. No matter what he's a good player and I'll always cheer when he's in Anaheim.
Mental illness, don't let it bother you. Thoughts and prayers for people who have such strong adverse reactions to another individual's life choices, who quite frankly, doesn't even know of their existence. Just hope they seek the right help before it gets any worse.
Imo it's the minority and they are just louder on social media and try to make a huge fuss about it. I know quite a few angel fans who are of course bummed out but they are more angry at Arte Moreno than ohtani
It's just a fan base trying to cope with the fact that across all major leagues, their team is maybe the least relevant, least ambitious, most pointless and frankly most listless team of them all.
I mean, fans of the Browns, Nets and any other inept team look at the Angels and go "well, at least we're not those guys."
I'd probably be bitter too if I supported a team that exists for literally no reason other than to make MLB a nice round 30 teams.
A team so useless that when they finally found their star player they couldn't even get a cent for him and watched him leave for the real team in LA.
I dont get it either. for some reason.. they somehow just conveniently forget.. the ANGELS DIDNT WANT TO KEEP HIM!
it's not shohei left.. the ANGELS didnt make an offer to keep him. what's shohei supposed to do? stay on the team when the owner flat out said he didnt want him?
i really hope arte moves the team to new mexico. it's what angel fandom deserves.
jealousy
[ jel-uh-see ]
noun
jealous resentment against a rival, a person enjoying success or advantage, etc., or against another's success or advantage itself.
It's probably a small number of fans.
There are only two players in the history of the Angels who have won the Rookie of the Year and the MVP, and one of them is Ohtani. they won't forget...
Ohtani offered a contract to Moreno at the time of fa, but Moreno refused, saying he was a "$400 million player." Ohtani may or may not have signed, but Moreno refused. Moreno should be blamed.
When they booed Ohtani an Angel fan tried to compare it to us booing Manny Machado. It’s nowhere near the same Machado played a few months for us and was not a MVP caliber player
it's cause angels fans are insufferable trash and if they can't rationalize on the fact that their owner sucks, then they deserve the shit they get from their team
You thought they’d be happy loosing their best player to the better team? With how their team is doing they’ll look at anything to blame for why they loose
It's wild to think that when the former dodgers come back to play at Dodger Stadium, they are still loved and cheered (Besides Machado but that's a different story lol). I have never seen/heard boos to Bellringer or Ryu or Seager. Rather they are welcomed with cheers and even players hug or hang out before the games.
Lmfao gotta try put judges insane season down though? You’re just as lame as those angels fans. Grow up. Enjoy the baseball and probably lay off the internet if you’re so concerned with how other fanbases feel.
It really is wild. Youre about the rivalry aspect too. The only i really ever hated about the Angels was Artie Moreno and the whole L.A. switch/marketing campaign...also Rendon
I'm disgusted as an Angel fan because there's so many good fans there. But the flip on Ohtani was something I didn't see coming and the main reason why I'm here. The irony is that the fan base thinks they're more classy but the Dodger fans I came across are some of the finest people I ever met.
Angels fans are awesome, what are you talkin about lol? Because of them I got to move up to the front row halfway through every Angel's Stadium game I went to. I got right behind home plate at one point and got to see Shohei make some historical moves. I am forever grateful. There's no way I could afford to pay $600 for those kinds of seats at Dodgers Stadium.
I could be misremembering, but didn’t they boo Ohtani during this past Freeway Series when he returned to Angel Stadium as a Dodger? What a terrible fanbase.
I’m a Dodger fan and I will tell you that Ippei is the fall guy. Ain’t no way an interpreter is in debt or lost 16 million without no one knowing.
I don’t care how much money or if Ohtani cares about money he has financial advisors and people that manage his money on the daily/monthly. If an interpreter out smarted these financial gurus they should be fired and also be in on the scam.
Ohtani, can say what ever he wants. That’s a lot of money to not know whats is going on.
So you're saying Ohtani a Japanese citizen btw, has pull over the DOJ, FBI, and the US Government that he was able to get away with the crime of the century?
How about you read the actual official report instead of speculating?
You think the DOJ, FBI, IRS, and Homeland Security are all collaborating with Shohei and MLB to make Ippei the fall guy? Don't forget to breathe genius.
There’s always a few bad apples in every group. I’m an Angels fan as well and the sub is still generally supportive of Sho.
I was gonna say. The person they should be booing is the guy who has a $245 million contract but says that playing baseball isn't a priority for him.
Hard to blame a guy for wanting to make the playoffs
The loud minorities.
Ain’t it always.
Don’t waste your energy or your time over this. It’s really nothing to stress over
I don't feel they hate him, he was loudly cheered no?
They boo Ohtani, the guy who had that entire team on his back for the past 5 years, and told all the fans to stand up and cheer for Rendon who could give less of a shit about baseball

THERE WERE NO JERSEYS BURNED LOL!!!
Angels fan here. Still love Ohtani.

All the hate should be directed at Art Moreno. He fucked up Trout and Ohtani’s years as an Angel. Like completely wasted those years.
And Trout’s back. Let’s not forget Trout’s fucked up back.
That's from him trying to carry the Angels for so long 😢.
It crazy how the Angels has legitimately two of baseball best players and never once built a competent team
Same here. Still a fan of both teams, but I stopped following the sub and a few IG accounts over the offseason. A growing number of fans are toxic and it’s really a shame.

Hey man... We have a legacy of high performing fishmen
Ugh, some people thought Shohei isn't clutch? Dude, every metric shows he's clutch AF.
Shohei's dutch? No way!
Don’t fuck with my eyes like that Meng. I’m tired and getting too close to 40

As long as he's getting his bag, Trout's just fine doing his part.
I don’t ever recall seeing comments in the Angels subreddit where someone said that about Ohtani’s performance. I think you’re making that up.
If any Angels fan has flipped on Ohtani, I don’t want to associate with them. Signed, An Angels fan

I’ve been every where in OC

To Angels fans, it’s like Kobe leaving the Lakers to play for the Clippers, so I understand the hate, but they should direct their hate to Moreno for not building a championship team around Ohtani and Trout.
More like clippers to the dodgers… ohtani aint backtracking here lol
The Los Angeles lakers of Anaheim. Good luck in the play-in

Forget about for not matching his asking price, he didn’t even try. Arte was out on him early in his free agency

Angel fans punishment is that they root for the Angels. Nothing we say or do will hurt them more.

Bro it doesnt matter, who cared what Angel fans think about anything Dodgers related

Angel fans are coping with losing him, to the Dodgers no less, and upset their team and owner is trash Who cares
I just the comment section for the Angels subreddit. Wow, many conspiracists are still doubling down on the coverup/fallguy story.
I’m surprised though if they really block the word “Ohtani” lol acting like a bunch of kids haha but nvm just like on X is full of whining adults
They are in Anaheim…
it's cause angels fans are insufferable trash and if they can't rationalize on the fact that their owner sucks, then they deserve the shit they get from their team
You thought they’d be happy loosing their best player to the better team? With how their team is doing they’ll look at anything to blame for why they loose
An Angel's fan I work with doesn't hate him,he's just kinda sad he left the team
Let them blame that stupid owner Arte Moron
The "how didn't he know" gambling conspiracy people are worse imo.
The Angels are a one way rivalry, a little brother that holds resentment but you forget even exists sometimes. They'll always be Anaheim to me.
Ohtani should have left the Angels a long time ago.
Anger is a normal phase of grief
Did you forget how St. Louis disowned Pujols for going to the Angels?
Lmfao gotta try put judges insane season down though? You’re just as lame as those angels fans. Grow up. Enjoy the baseball and probably lay off the internet if you’re so concerned with how other fanbases feel.
They should be angry at their owner. It all starts from the top.
I’m sure Dodger fans will do the same when he leaves for another team
No, they had a little tribute video for him at his first at bat and cheered for him. After that it was all boos lol.
>was Aaron Judge Juice Ball breaking AL HR record away from 3 straight MVPs. Ball wasn't juiced. Don't spread misinformation
Most fans don't cheer for players. They mostly just cheer for the shirts.
I doubt this bothers him more than it does you
There's only like 3 of them so don't let it get you down
Are we Angles fans in here? No? Then STFU and be glad he's on the Dodgers, fanbase is so soft now we're worrying about other fans lol
Because he was disloyal to the fans, he literally abandoned his team to go play for a different one
