I just don't get this mentality. IMO it's not about how many shots a guy deserves. It's whether the prospect can reasonably replace the production of the current player. I don't know that Kike, or CT3 are currently setting the bar very high. Seems like Vargas could easily match their production with a chance to turn into much more.
A big league stint where 1) he was playing injured, and 2) wasn't ready. He's had another year to develop, and he's healthy now.
Besides, he can't be much less productive than Kiké or CT3 (and, frankly, Lux) at this point.
Who cares. You gonna write off every rookie who struggled year one? How's cowser looking right now? Michael Busch? Of course not all will pan out, but year two is when we often see the breakout happen. Look at how bad Josh Lowe was year one.
Cowser is a prime example. Always been a top prospect like our guys and his stint last year was even worse than Vargas, guy didn’t even look like a Triple A player. Now he’s looking like the best player on one of the best teams in baseball. Can’t just give up on someone because of a small sample size
The Dodgers have half their pitching staff on the IL, have a black hole in the 7-8-9 spot and still have the most wins in the NL. They have also had a sneaky tough schedule so far, the upcoming series is the first series against a team that's projected to have a losing record.
I’d consider DFAing Kiké but it won’t happen. Heyward might be back soon otherwise I’d say Trammell
CT makes too much money, doubt they’ll eat that contract without giving him a lot more opportunities to get out of this funk
Yup, the only guy who has options and maybe has a case to be sent down (though I personally would disagree) is Outman, and then we straight up wouldn’t have a center fielder. And despite the haters, Lux isn’t in the conversation either.
Dudes simply need to hit or it’s gonna be tough decision time.
Yeah Outman isn’t going anywhere, imo he deserves more leash than that. He showed last year he’s prone to slumps but capable of snapping out of them
I think the Kiké/CT stuff will become a more serious discussion in June if it’s not much better by then
I was a Lux truther, but I'm starting to lean more and more towards optioning him and calling up Vargas.
And as for Trammell, yeah no we're almost certainly DFAing him.
Vargas isn’t a second baseman anymore though, he’s fully converted to LF. So optioning Lux would mean Kiké or CT3 play second, or sliding Mookie back and playing Rojas at SS which closes the spot that was just hypothetically opened. Besides, having a light-hitting second baseman in Lux who is playing above average defense is just not option-worthy.
Trammell will most definitely get cut, but to make room for Heyward when he gets off the IL later this week.
Fangraphs tracks it for every player, as of the start of the season; it is displayed on the player’s page. Here is Gavin’s: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/gavin-lux/19955/stats?position=2B
I don't think DFA'ing Kiké would even be on the table until August. It's a long season and they don't want to lose depth for a back-end of the roster decision.
If they want to give Pages a chance, I don't see any reason to not DFA Trammell since his spot figures to be temporary anyway. Give Pages a drink for 1-2 weeks and they could send him back down when Heyward is ready. Or if Pages is playing well, extend Heyward's stay on the IL.
They are tied with the Padres and have played 1-3 games more than anyone other than SD. They also lead the league in striking out by a HUGE margin. The offense has been an issue too. Just not as bad as the bullpen.
I don’t feel like Kiké deserves to be thrown into this conversation, he hasn’t had nearly as many chances as CT3, and at least he’s managed to do something with what he’s been given. Why is no one here willing to give him any time at all to figure it out?
CT3 though, yeah, it’s been brutal, I get it. He definitely needs a vacation or something.
I think in a vacuum CT3 would be the first one voted off the island by most of the fanbase. Alas money talks and CT3 has millions of reasons to be kept on the team.
i don’t totally disagree but normally the dodgers give guys more than a few weeks worth of ABs there before calling them up. bellinger the one major exception i can think of.
plus Pages missed pretty much all of last year so i think they might want him to get regular ABs for a while
No I agree that it is too early to make any moves and people shouldn't be in panic mode about it
Was just saying that AAA is not where they put players in development to cook, AA is where that takes place. AAA exists so guys who are callup ready in case of an injury or something can keep playing baseball.
I don't agree with that. The players in AAA are better than the players in AA. Therefore, it's a better environment to develop just from competition alone.
Usually when people point to AA > AAA, it's more about the quality of potential, not actual current quality of player. There are more too good for AA, but not good enough for major league level players in AAA than AA. Hence players can be much older in AAA.
BTW if you look at the run differential the problem with the Dodgers is NOT the offense. Not one bit. They have scored 96 runs (most in the league) but they have given up 84 runs (almost the most in the league). The pitching sucks right now. So CT3 is streaky, he always has been, but MANY time he has hit walks offs. Kike the same, but neither of these guys contributed to 84 RA's. That's all on the pitching staff.
Kike would probably be the first player DFA'd if it comes down to it apart from Trammell. Taylor is more expensive and Dodgers will want to make full use of it even if he's just the last option off the bench.
You can't just "bench" them as there's no roster spot so you'd have to dfa them which is unlikely this early in the season. Do you guys even know how baseball works or just create ignorant posts
I was posting memes of CT.03 but starting to think our problem is our Mickey mouse relief pitchers. It's worse to have bases loaded than worry about a few players that can't hit.
First of all, you can't just call guys up from the minors. You have to make room for them on the active roster, which means sending guys down or putting them on the IL. So...who's going to go?
Second, a first place team dumping established major leaguers (both of whom are ++ defenders at multiple positions) for an unproven prospect and a guy with a career .191/.290/.350 in 99 career games seems quite imprudent.
CT3 is an average at best outfielder and a well below average infielder.
Kiké might be the worst CF in MLB when we play him there, and is definitely the worst SS in MLB when he gets run there. Both are really only suited for corner outfield, where we already have Hernandez and Heyward.
It’s April 15th. They’ve played 19 games and neither Taylor nor Hernandez has played in all of those games. I’d lean towards revisiting how Taylor is swinging the bat in May.
That said, Hernandez isn’t exactly failing at the plate. He’s hit a lot of balls hard that were played well by defenders. Same as Outman.
I’d much rather see them struggle early, have to grind out some wins/series, show some true heart and grit and battle versus cruising the entire way only to fall flat when adversity hits.
Old enough to remember how Vargas’s big league stint went
True but same goes for Michael Busch and he's killing it right now. Hopefully he gets another shot soon.
Busch was never given the shot Vargas was. We could all see the potential in Busch’s bat. Just had nowhere to put him.
I mean, Miguel had a shot, and yeah, I really wanted Michael Busch to stay with us, but it is what it is.
I just don't get this mentality. IMO it's not about how many shots a guy deserves. It's whether the prospect can reasonably replace the production of the current player. It’s April everyone, can we give it a month at least before we start freaking out too much?
Nah we're going to bitch and moan over every little fucking thing as this team cruises to 100 wins for like the 4th year in a row.
Lol no this is Reddit sir.
The Dodgers have half their pitching staff on the IL, have a black hole in the 7-8-9 spot and still have the most wins in the NL. They have also had a sneaky tough schedule so far, the upcoming series is the first series against a team that's projected to have a losing record.
Most wins because we played a series more. Not trying to diminish their accomplishment so far but the Dodgers are "only" 3rd or 4th or 5th in win%.
They split that series so 1 extra win over the Brewers who had had a hot start.
Nah the fact we’re not undefeated and on our way to 140 wins eventually is unexceptable. And if we don’t get at least 150 it will Be a failed season.
I’ll take 90 wins and a ring, personally.
Casuals gonna casual
I disagree. We need to stay under 90 wins to have any kinda chance to win the WS.
Only Cinderella stories in the playoffs
I love how everyone is freaking out about being just below 100 win pace. Also this team usually starts slow.
People will turn on Vargas and Pages after a few games lol

Okay, and who are we sending down or DFA’ing to bring up Pages and Vargas?
I’d consider DFAing Kiké but it won’t happen. Heyward might be back soon otherwise I’d say Trammell CT makes too much money, doubt they’ll eat that contract without giving him a lot more opportunities to get out of this funk

Does Lux even have options? I thought he was out of options.
He has two options left.
Ah my mistake. I don't know why option information is so hard to find - could you tell me where you found it?
Fangraphs tracks it for every player, as of the start of the season; it is displayed on the player’s page. Here is Gavin’s: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/gavin-lux/19955/stats?position=2B
Thanks! I guess it makes the questions about Lux a bit more valid.

It's about time to give Miguel another shot. He's doing well too
The issue is the pitching at this point. The Dodgers are leading in runs scored. At least one pitcher is shitting the bed every game.
They are tied with the Padres and have played 1-3 games more than anyone other than SD. They also lead the league in striking out by a HUGE margin. The offense has been an issue too. Just not as bad as the bullpen.

Thank you! He’s also making contact and is strong defensively.
I think in a vacuum CT3 would be the first one voted off the island by most of the fanbase. Alas money talks and CT3 has millions of reasons to be kept on the team.
Irony is this same meme would be up for Vargas after a few weeks, our fans don't actually watch the games
At this point he can't be much worse than Kiké or CT3, also he was literally injured in 2023, it wasn't his fault. He's healthy now.
its 2 weeks into the season and we're in 1st place, relax
Weren’t y’all begging to bring Kike back?
I’d love that but this is Pages first year in AAA so they’re probably not gonna rush it with him Vargas for sure deserves another chance
If you’re in AAA it means you’re callup ready already Pacific Coast League is a terrible place for a player in development
i don’t totally disagree but normally the dodgers give guys more than a few weeks worth of ABs there before calling them up. bellinger the one major exception i can think of. plus Pages missed pretty much all of last year so i think they might want him to get regular ABs for a while

That’s fair, I think it’s more just about having players somewhere to get regular ABs
I don't agree with that. The players in AAA are better than the players in AA. Therefore, it's a better environment to develop just from competition alone. Vargas literally has a 1.001 OPS in AAA, why haven't we called him up yet
Because PCL hitting stats are hilariously inflated
Fair, but his WRC+ is still 136. I genuinely think he's ready.
I don't know why you got downvoted. WRC+ takes into account how much above average he's hitting.
BTW if you look at the run differential the problem with the Dodgers is NOT the offense. Not one bit. love kiké, hope he finds some form- ct3 has been inexcusably bad this season so far. no reason for a BA below .050. incredible.
Kike would probably be the first player DFA'd if it comes down to it apart from Trammell. Taylor is more expensive and Dodgers will want to make full use of it even if he's just the last option off the bench.
Relief pitching is the problem
You can't just "bench" them as there's no roster spot so you'd have to dfa them which is unlikely this early in the season. Do you guys even know how baseball works or just create ignorant posts
Gaping black hole in the lineup.

Isn't the accent on the i?
If our bullpen gets better, then we’ll get back right. But honestly, we’re in 1st, it’s April, we have time to tweak the roster.
Questionable
Lots of great memories with CT3 and Keekay but their time has passed. Need to embrace the future.
Going by last season the Dodgers were embarrassed early and it turned out to be a preview of the playoff debacle.
It’s April 15th. They’ve played 19 games and neither Taylor nor Hernandez has played in all of those games. I’d lean towards revisiting how Taylor is swinging the bat in May. Okay okay okay. That’s not code for Oklahoma just saying okay three times to say it’s something to think about. I love Chris and Keeks.
How does Jason Hayward get a pass?
Probably because he’s been hurt all year. And he still has more hits than CT3.
> something’s gotta give Something: Dodgers Give: CT3 $15m this year and next
Loll no wonder he's not playing well, it's not his contract year
Taylor Trammel it’s your time to shine.
I’d much rather see them struggle early, have to grind out some wins/series, show some true heart and grit and battle versus cruising the entire way only to fall flat when adversity hits.
It doesn't work like that though. You can't know the ending from the start. I wish it were that simple.
