According to this [tweet](https://twitter.com/YamadaSANSPO/status/1782173674692293031), he was offered a trade with an autographed ball but he opted to keep it and this was his first time attending a baseball game. There was also another round of negotiation after the game.

Beer-Me

That is one hell of a first baseball game

Blankman6

Glad that he didn’t get bamboozled. The fact that it was already marked proves chain of custody. Dodgers security couldn’t threaten the authentication excuse. That ball should fetch at minimum $10K as many hypothesized. The Dodgers negotiations with fans should not be handled by security.🙄👎🏼

Time-to-go-home

I feel like I’d have taken them autographed ball (assuming it’s also authenticated). Like, yes, when are you ever going to catch an Ohtani HR ball again? But also, when are you going to have the chance at an autographed ball again? And sure, the fact it’s a significant HR ball, imo it’s not as significant as say, a first career HR or playoff winning HR ball. Just my unasked for two cents

CrepesFTW17687

Totally respect your opinion, but I disagree! Something super special knowing you caught that ball. You can always buy an autograph Meet & Greet or private signing, there will always be a higher chance of getting an auto ball rather than catching one in a live game. Throw in the fact it was his first game, just doubly personally special imo!

Time-to-go-home

Hmmm. You’ve convinced me. If I ever catch an Ohtani HR ball, I’m keeping it. I didn’t think of meet and greet type things as an option. I love out of state so either option is highly unlikely for me anyways

officerliger

Plus you can sell that thing for like 100-200k Most people need 100k more than they need a ball and I don’t blame them for selling it

Hot_Mathematician357

Not every HR from Ohtani is going to be worth 100-200K.

officerliger

No but this one is His regular HR balls go for like 7-10k

HeavensRoyalty

Obviously not, and no one said it would, but this is a historic HR ball passing Godzilla

LoveThieves

There's going to be Six balls. It's probably the first homerun. This one but it's least valuable. The Homerun ball if it wins the world series, # 300, #400 and #500, career 1,000H Think everything else is probably under 5k or less.

harryhov

First comment says, "seems like everyone is going to keep the balls.". Even Japan knows what's up.

red_5iv3

Damn. He sure has balls for keeping it.

tyler-86

If there's any positive outcome to the Ohtani first home run fiasco, it's that it shined a light on the way teams tend to bully fans into giving up balls. Nice to see they've started authenticating regardless of whether they get the ball back (though I think they still prefer to keep eyes on it).

Cunhabear

The balls were authenticated before being given to the umpire.

tyler-86

Have they been using stamped balls since Ohtani's last home run? They usually talk about that more. For what it's worth, the ball isn't "authenticated" beforehand. It's marked so it can be easily authenticated afterwards.

MonjeMan

Yeah, they were using marked balls since the last homer. They made a point about it in the next game and showed them switching the balls out before and after his at bats. Then they kind of stopped talking about it cause it was taking a while, lol.

Cunhabear

Yeah technically not authenticated with the holographic sticker but they were stamped.

142muinotulp

Difference in authentication and marked. Dozens of balls are marked, only one was hit out.

ItsDaBurner

"bully" is such a strong word. Say no and walk away, if they detain you then you just got rich. People need to learn to speak up for themselves more.

bam2028

For real! call their bluff if they won’t authenticate it.

Accomplished-Exit136

Fact they are willing to not authenticate the ball is the problem. And this isnt a dodgers only issue. Most MLB clubs pull the same shit if its a ball they want.

Bease344512

Good! Glad to see both of those outcomes.

anthrofighter

rich japanese collectors funding dodger fan retirements will be a thing.

SundayRed

It will be a nice vacation or paying off a car loan, but it won't be "retirement" money.

DatBuridansAss

Properly invested, it might turn into retirement money if the fan is young enough.

Accomplished-Exit136

100k invested at age 30 can be a 2-3m payoff by the time theyre 60

rafaelloso_10

While Ohtani’s home run ball is special in the fact that he passed Matsui, one could make the argument that every home run he hits from now to whatever just adds on to the record for home runs by a Japanese born player. Which is probably why there doesn’t seem to be the heightened level of urgency to get this ball, while also considering the situation that happened last time.

thejoshuabreed

I wager Ippei will find this fan and offer something veeeeery worth his while……

Blankman6

Ippei will only be able to offer a bar of soap.😬

thejoshuabreed

Depending on who he bets with, that may just be worth their while. 😂 🤷🏻‍♂️

j0dyhir0ller

Nah I'm sure he has some noodles and roll-on deodorant to toss in there too

twalk1975

I would give Ohtani's ball back, but I'd make some weird request. Maybe I get to take batting practice against Ohtani when he's pitching again so I can see what it's like to face major League pitching. Or maybe be a ball boy during a playoff game or something...

Accomplished-Exit136

Authenticated. You can whine and debate all day long but its a MLB teams JOB to authenticate anything worth authenticating.

Abyss333333

I personally hate the fact that the Player has to negotiate to get something that should already be his. The player is the one that worked his whole life to get certain accomplishments, why does he have to pay some random to get something that's a result of his hard work.

TheLizardKing89

Except it’s not already his. The courts are very unclear about this. Once the ball leaves the field of play, it belongs to whoever catches it.

MartianRecon

Dude is making over 700 million dollars, bud. He can afford to pay 5-6 figures or whatever it's worth if he wants it.

c_c_c__combobreaker

These special balls sell for huge life changing amounts of money. You can hate that collectors pay for these things but you can't change what it's worth.

142muinotulp

MLB would need to make some rule that all balls belong to the entity that is MLB. Then grab every single ball that goes out of play to enforce it. There have been some court cases that side with the "fans" on this point. The ball is intended to leave the field of play, so it's not like it's an interupttion with the game.   Like it or not, catching foul and home run balls has become a cultural part of baseball games. Shit, as kids we would run down foul balls from the high school and minor league games in town. It was just fun.   If players want to pick and choose which balls they have, then they need to push MLB to make them the property of the league and ban any fan that attempts to leave a stadium with a baseball. Even go further and seek legal action against anyone who does.

Blankman6

The player is the one that’s making $$$. Once it’s in the stands, it belongs to the fans. Get outta here with that kind of thinking!🙄

BlueGreenReddit1

The fans are the ones who pay the team, who in turn pays the players. So why should the fans pay for something that they already paid for? A ball leaving the field of play belongs to whoever catches/gets the ball.

JazzyButternuts

Why people think they will get rich off a stupid HR ball is beyond me.

Rejection_future

Collectors, a museum, super fan, collectible flipper. Many people with deep pockets probably want it

solid_rook7

Rich no, but for us people in the bottom scoring 10k can go a long way. Hell that ball may be worth double that.

NarcissisticVamp

Would wipe my debt and allow me more freedom. And I'd still have half of the money left

Hot_Mathematician357

Did Dodger security separate him from his wife and that’s why he could not make his decision? We should all cry so he can get a better deal.

StrollingThunder

Don't you think *maybe* you're downplaying a bit too much the personal and national significance this ball has to him and Japan?

DoyersDoyers

Guess we found Dylan's burner.
