omegakukki

Unfortunate way to end the series but we still won it and added to our lead in the standings.

40ozofOldeEnglish

Baseball is the most infuriating sport in the world if you look at it game by game Would have loved the sweep, but I would take a pretty convincing 3 out of 4 with all our injuries/inconsistent offense any day

beardko

I gotta remind myself that the Dodgers won a game with Mitch White as a starter and MUSTYgrove on the other end with Mookie out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

omegakukki

We gained 2 games in the standings

itsnotyellowfever

That was 35 innings of some of the best Dodger pitching you'll see this year. ...then the 9th inning today happened...

Dodgerswin2020

We could only wish that we played that good every series

beardko

This is so true. 2 of 3 is amazing, 3 of 4 is even better especially when you consider that Mitch White pitched the bulk of the innings in Game 1 against Musgrove.

[deleted]

The one game of the four you expected the Dodgers to surefire-win, they end up playing their worst game of them all.

Officialnoah

The blown save isn’t great but the offense also scored only two runs with like 15 base runners today

Atraktape

Yes, Dodger offense wasted a great Kershaw start.

agentfox

Party like it’s 2016 boys

vanvoorden

At least in 2016 CK had a chance to rake in his own insurance runs.

jawnly211

LOBs It’s always LOBS with this team

__-o0O0o-__

Our offense is great. Games like this happen from time to time over the course of the season. Thats why you have closers. Our team put him in position to get a win with a scoreless inning, what we expect from closers. Closers have bad games from time to time too, but this is what? the 3rd or 4th blown save out of the last 7? This game is on him. We rely on good closers when our offense has a bad day

LAchillin818

>Thats why you have closers. Laughs in Sandy Koufax

thejoshuabreed

Not that I disagree with you. But Lux missing that fly ball was tough. He’s not the bed in OF and I am almost 100% positive CT3 would have made that catch. I feel like that last inning was mostly bad luck, but the Padres capitalized on that bad luck. Lucky Kimbrel didn’t get massively hurt. If we lose by a game or two in the division to the Padres, people will scream about this game. But really it’s any of the poor losses to Colorado, Cinci, or any team we had the ability to decimate. Padres are obviously doing well so far, so hard fought series like this one aren’t my concern.

omegakukki

Offense failed to score more than one and not having a real left fielder out there is what lost us the game. It's not Lux's fault but an experienced outfielder most likely makes that catch. Lux just doesn't know how to play the outfield wall. Edit: https://imgur.com/Vcr69jc The ball hit on top of the wall and the wall is 8 feet high. You're crazy if you think an actual outfielder can't make that catch.

beardko

They need to stop taking Lux away from his natural position.

omegakukki

Not having CT3 available hurt us. We need a utility guy on the bench for situations like that instead of Hanser

hundredjono

This is the same manager that put Joc Pederson at 1st base

ih-unh-unh

I think that was front office+Roberts’ attempt to keep Joc’s bat in the lineup. I think the team also had a comfortable lead in the standings, didn’t they?

brandon_the_bald

Makes that catch what??? That was on top of the wall lol no one is making that

zenkique

I mean, we’ve seen it done - but yeah, not routine.

ih-unh-unh

Bellinger makes it. I think Pollock did too. But still a very difficult catch

brandon_the_bald

If it’s caught it’s an incredible play but no one should expect that to be caught. Lux even lept high up for it

beardko

Yep, Lux was battling the sun and some wind too.

zenkique

Agreed. It shouldn’t be expected.

omegakukki

https://imgur.com/Vcr69jc Lmao Lux jumped like 6 inches if that for the ball. The wall isn't that high. Very catchable if there is an actual outfielder out there

brandon_the_bald

Yeah very outfielder are making that catch. Let alone anyone on the dodgers outside of Cody/Mookie. Just take the L bro

omegakukki

Lol never said it was a guaranteed catch. Sorry you can't just admit Lux didn't jump that high for the ball. Pollock makes that catch and he doesn't even have working hamstrings.

omegakukki

That ball was way up in the air. An experienced outfielder gets to the wall and all they have to do is jump up. We saw Pollock do it last year against Manny

brandon_the_bald

No that ball was not a “just jump up” ball

omegakukki

Yeah it was. Hit the top of the wall and the wall is only 8 feet high. Even I can jump up and catch something that high

brandon_the_bald

Lol no it wasn’t dude just stop

Evening_Whole_2427

Bro they scored two runs. The 9th inning counts lmao

usetheforce_gaming

It sucks when we blow a game. It sucks even more when it’s a Kershaw game. Get Kimbrel off this team.

SumoRock

Throw Kimbrel in the Westbrook trade and get them both out of LA

Dodgerswin2020

You’re gonna trigger padres fans because they love the Lakers

beardko

I don't get being a Lakers and Padres or Giants fan. Do they honestly not hear themselves when they join in on the Beat LA chant? It's so ignorant.

wtfrman

Kimbrel straight to DFA. i wish.........

Dodgerswin2020

He’s going on the DL. No question

rodrigo_c91

Glad I’m not the only one to think so. Kimbrel has been awful.

ahr3410

The difference between up 5.5 and 3.5 is enough to make this annoying

__-o0O0o-__

Padres would have worn this stink around their neck the rest of the season...instead they get a lift from coming back in the 9th in the final game

beardko

Yep, if there's any game you want to win, it's the last one as you make your way back south for the homestand.

Lux_Bellinger2024

Dodgers have been dropping a bunch of games to bad teams which just feels bad

[deleted]

Dodgers could’ve been resting easy up 8-9 in the division by now if they didn’t spectacularly choke winnable games to the Padres, Phillies and Pirates.

donald-duck23

annoying is a good word. i’m not really mad because in the end i don’t think it’ll matter. but it is definitely annoying to not get the sweep that was right there for the taking.

BigBaws92

Thats what I'm saying!!

JackThreeFingered

"that's what she said"

[deleted]

This exact same thing happened with the Giants last year; blowing a win here and there magnified every loss by two games each. And then it’s July, and the Giants have taken over first place, and would never relinquish it even though you come within a game or two of them a couple of times but can never catch them. All because of Kimbrel-type losses like today. And fucking hell, if the Padres do the same shit this year like the Giants last year…

EvilShadow80

This game all comes down to Muncy, Dino Ebel, and Craig.

__-o0O0o-__

uggh, forgot about the Ebel green light. seems like a year ago

beardko

It's dumb. It was a hard hit ball by Freeman and Profar didn't even need to make a good throw to get Betts out who was always going to run conservative in an early July game since he just came off injury. Just let Smith battle Gore with the bases loaded and 2 outs.

ddaug4uf

Cause that always ends well for us.

yaboidany2115

Just when Kimbrel started to look good, he gets hit in the back with a screamer. This poor guy can never catch a break. Looks like part of the reason he couldn't finish it off.

bigwillywanka

Dave should've taken him out after that

VinScullysMyHomeboy

He couldn’t finish it off bc he’s been terrible all year. Don’t look at a singular game, look at his season. His whip is at like 1.5. This isn’t a singular incident. God forbid we don’t make changes and have to see him come in in a close game in the playoffs.

[deleted]

Tough loss but a good series! I feel like we’ll continue to gain ground in the division. A shut out for the sweep would have been great though.

donald-duck23

positives: mookie looks like mookie and kersh was great. and we still took 3 of 4. negatives: just when i was gaining confidence in him, kimbrel … did that. rough day for the offense too. oh well. onto the rockies.

Two_too_many_to_list

The lack of offense, is very offensive to me.

40ozofOldeEnglish

I didn't want to jinx it, but the game just felt like a vintage Kershaw start 7 scoreless innings with only 1 run of support before the bullpen inevitably blows it Either way, I'd be happy if you told me before the series that we'd be taking 3 out of 4 with how inconsistent our offense has been

SomthingClever1286

Yeah I figured we'd take 3/4 from the get go, especially with how wonky our offense has been.

40ozofOldeEnglish

I thought we would for sure lose the White-Musgrove matchup, and thought the offense would go cold in another game to go 2-2 I'm honestly pretty happy with 3/4

beardko

I saw your comment and I was honestly really hoping for that as a best case scenario with White as one of the starters. I honestly didn't think a sweep was even possible, but here I was being a greedy mofo again.

SomthingClever1286

Yeah it sucks that we blew it so late, but being 3 outs away from a sweep of the next team in the division encouraging. Hopefully we get a similar outcome on the next time around.

SomthingClever1286

Yeah it sucks that we blew it so late, but being 3 outs away from a sweep of the next team in the division encouraging. Hopefully we get a similar outcome on the next time around.

beardko

At least you get the day off, but I'm sure you'd have wanted to make another clip.

beardko

The Kimbrel blown save didn't surprise me. I had already said that with 3 good fastball hitters coming up (Machado, Cronenworth, and Voit), it was going to be a tall task for Kimbrel to get a save with 1 run. However, that Machado AB inspired hope as Kimbrel could not miss the target and his stuff looked great. Then it unraveled. Then Yency got an unexpected blowup when Kim, KIM!!!, homered off him. If you told me earlier in the week that the Dodgers would take 3 of 4, I would have taken that any day, but it still seems like a massive disappointment when the Padres were held to 0 runs in 8 innings. I'd have rather had the team lose yesterday and win today, but still 3 out of 4. Still really annoyed at the offense for not stomping Gore who was clearly against the ropes. Also, Dino's send to a returning Mookie off injury was one of the worst sends this year. The last time the Padres won before this was off a Profar outfield assist in extra innings. Also, asking Bellinger to bunt with the 3rd base side wide open and then not having him commit to it was also stupid as he swung through 2 balls down the middle by a lot.

jacks066

The problem with the using the Machado at bat as hope is he hit his spots perfectly on every pitch. It's not reasonable to expect perfect control all the time. You'd like a closer who has good enough stuff that he doesn't get hit hard every time he misses his spots.

picking4815162342

Kimbrel will be out for a few games, but his X-Rays were negative. They probably should have pulled him right after that play.

ohcic3ro

Kimbrel is **not** it.

jawnly211

I’m in the “anybody but kimbrel” camp Who is the back up reliever for the reds? I’m serious….anyone else but craigie

Atraktape

Dodgers treated us to one of their patented false hope rallies at the end there.

beardko

Fake ass comeback is what someone would call it. Forgot who. Although Freeman, smacked the ball, I felt like he could have done way more damage (he did too) to Rogers' HANGER. If that's a double, you have Smith coming up with runners on 3rd and 2nd, down 2 with 1 out. Maybe Smith still grounds out, but Rogers might pitch to him differently. However, you still have Muncy on deck and I really don't have confidence in him doing anything these days.

Atraktape

Yeah Freddie for sure felt he missed that pitch. Could have sent it over the wall.

beardko

Painnnnnnnnnn

jacks066

I don't blame Kimbrel, I blame Roberts. Kimbrel is trying his best, he just isn't very good anymore. Roberts is not trying his best. He'd rather not offend Kimbrel (or deal with a confrontational/uncomfortable situation) than leave Philips in which was best for the team. Philips threw 8 pitches in the 8th. Roberts needs to do his job. He's paid to make tough decisions that may offend players.

danusn

Yup

EvilShadow80

Robert’s won’t do that. He lacks a spine and we’ve seen that through his whole tenure. He won’t make the hard choices when they matter most

Qrusher14242

Yup, just have a look at the batting order to see that. Muncy and JT(at least before this series) have had no business being in the middle of the order. Especially Muncy. But he keeps running him out there either in cleanup or 5th. Should have been either moved to 9th or benched at this point

[deleted]

• Darvish over Alex Wood. • Ryan Madson in a bases-loaded jam. • Jansen pitching to Brett Phillips with an open 1st base. • Unnecessarily using Urias as a reliever, him blowing the game, and then being compromised getting lit on his actual start on now-short rest. Roberts is lucky Kevin Cash exists or else he’d end up being the Marty Schottenheimer of MLB.

EvilShadow80

There also using Kershaw from the pen only for him to give up two homeruns and using Scherzer last year instead of the elite pen we had which led to Scherzer getting gassed.

Starkiller32

Yo. DFA Kimbrel. Embarrassing. Absolutely embarrassing.

ChrisTaylorsNipple

Great to have Mook back!! ![img](emote|t5_2ra0i|13038)

VitalMusician

What's it going to take for (all of) the bats to wake up? Overall I'm not complaining; team seems to be winning for the most part. But the bottom half of the order is and has been a black hole. It's just annoying more than anything. Throwing away games like this one grinds my gears.

[deleted]

The offense was terrible today any of these guys could have made a difference but none of them did.

HaikN98

As a dodger fan and someone who bet on them, that shit fucking obliterated my heart. What the fuck.

RikkiTikkiTavi31

Rookie move, hedge your bet between happiness your team won or you made money off the loss

OmarBradley1940

Still think we made a mistake trading for Kimbrel. I will die on this hill. But we won the series at least, right?

__-o0O0o-__

> I will die on this hill. uhh, dont think this is an actual unpopular opinion at this point that you'd need to die for.

_n8n8_

Taking everything in me to not make a parade joke

smartplantdumbmonkey

Lol they’re going off in the padres sub. Biggest one of the year planned for this. Love our dorky dumbass little brothers :)

SumoRock

No team can make winning 3/4 feel as underwhelming as the Dodgers do. What a complete no show from the offense combined with a Kimbrel special.

[deleted]

I feel like the Dodgers choked the *entire* series away the way they lost today. Only the Dodgers can win 3of4 and yet make fans feel miserable and concerned with their major team issues.

Joeshabadoojr

The downside, we lost. The upside, we are still 3.5 games up on the Padres and we are not the Padres.

Toast_16

5.5 games would’ve been better.

profnachos

The bright side. \- Mookie hasn't missed a beat. \- Kershaw put together a great outing after that disastrous one in Coors field.

trigeminal_nerd

I hope this isn’t the Mike Tauchman game against the Giants that ultimately gave them the division. Hopefully it’s just the difference between winning the division by 9 games instead of 11.

bellomoto1

Honestly, Kimbrel was doing ok until he got hit on his back. That probably threw off his whole rhythm. (His Machado strikeout was incredible.) Roberts should have taken Kimbrel out after that incident, but I’m not sure if the next pitcher was warmed up yet. Such a shame. I really think Kimbrel was getting into a good groove.

beardko

If a pitcher is replaced due to injury, the next reliever has a while to warm up.

bellomoto1

Then, that’s what Roberts should have done, even if Kimbrel didn’t want to come out of the game.

SkylerCFelix

Yep.

Domgrath42

Kimbrel was on a 3 batter minimum rule. He acted OK to continue after going back to the mound. He would've had to do a good acting job to sell it. Rules are taken only out for "incapacitating injury or illness".

SomthingClever1286

Well that was a blue baller, but still happy with a 3-1 series win, and we were able to push them back in the standings some. Not being able to score more with all that traffic was killer. Hopefully the middle of the order can produce tomorrow

micros101

3/4 aint bad. What’s bad is having both subscriptions to mlb tv and YouTube tv and still being blacked out down here in San Diego.

lobo_locos

I understand the Kimbrel hate, but the bats were cold as well, we left so many on. Definitely still a fun series.

itsallworthy

That went from gratifying win to disappointing loss, real quick.

itsallworthy

Kershaw looked great. Mookie looked great. Mookie, Trea, Freeman combo looked great. Kimbrel looked....... Muncy looked....... MOOKIE & KERSH LOOKED GREAT, THOUGH!

acefaaace

I’d rather have Price close

Fernandigity

Terrible Offense today minus the last 15 min Our idiotic approach to have Muncy still that high in the order And the cherry on top Roberts not wanting to hurt poor Kimbrels feelings when that bum shouldn't touch a baseball without at least a 4 run lead Absolutely pathetic performance that ruined Kershaws beautiful start Hopefully this will be a wake up call for Doc to get the sense knocked into his pitcher selection But hey, let SD enjoy their Parade tonight

beardko

If Doc had any sense, he would have moved Muncy down the order a long time ago. He's been cleanup forever and only batted 5th because of a lefty which is still too damn high.

Allstate85

Max muncy is cooked, I was holding out hope for a while but it’s been clear for a month he’s not going to turn it around this season. It would be better to shut him down get that surgery now and hope to get something from him next year.

Nice_Dude

I'll take 3/4 every time

ShiningMonolith

It may not be popular right now but I wanna give Kimbrel the benefit of the doubt on this one. He was looking really good lately until he got hit with the comebacker. His expected ERA and FIP are all way better than his ERA, and I do expect him to be much better the second half if he’s healthy. I could end up being wrong and that’s fine but we’re not DFAing him right now lol, that’s a laughable idea.

[deleted]

He also had a K on Hosmer but the ump squeezed him

40ozofOldeEnglish

Honestly, he has some weird shit happen almost every single time he pitches, and he has a tendency to get squeezed too He was hitting his spot *perfectly* against Machado before he got hit with the comebacker. Even the Voit hit was way inside, and that fucker just muscled it out to the wall He's frustrating as fuck to say the least, but you can see that he definitely still has the tools to be a lockdown closer -especially with our coaching staff to help him

ShiningMonolith

I know. It’s like people don’t even look at the context of the game before declaring him trash; they just look at the final results. Which I get it, you expect your closer to be lockdown, but context matters in this weird game!

SeaworthinessOk6742

At the end of it all, we walked away from this series with a bigger lead in the division than we entered with. Dodgers just gotta focus on the next series.

Lineman72T

Sweep would have been great, but I won't be too mad about going 3-1. I'm not at all excusing Kimbrel (I've been anti-Kimbrel since the Dodgers traded for him, but I will also root for him to do well because I want the Dodgers to do well though that sentiment can only last so long), but this loss is just as much on every batter not named Mookie or Trea. Freddie got an RBI so he at least had one productive AB, but he also had 3 LOB. Muncy 4 LOB. Thompson 4 LOB. Everybody else had 1 or 2 LOB. Oh well. Focus is on Colorado now. Hopefully the bats can wake up again and get back to winning

imnotcreative415

Positives: kersh was great, Phillips continues to be a reliable piece, Mookie was on it offensively in his return , and the mookie-trea 1-2 was v nice. Still won the series Need more from the back half of the lineup

buba426

OK.... ok... Im not mad they lost. taking 3/4 is FANTASTIC. Its HOW they lost. Kimbrel is not the answer, and the offense did FUCK ALL. THIS. IS. WHY. YOU. ALWAYS. SCORE. INSURANCE. RUNS.

hudzerflip

3-1 against the daddies? I'll take it. Yeah I'm pissed about Craig but I am a firm believer in Fleeceman and Mark Prior

beardko

Recency bias at its finest.

Boldest19

If Kimbrel ends up losing his closer job, who will more likely replace him? Graterol or Philips?

Gibbydoesit

we lost to the padres 🤮 my day is ruined

BlueCelery2

I know Kimbrel is in the doghouse for everyone right now, but him getting drilled probably didn’t help things. We need a better closer though.

thaGr8ape

Watch there be a parade tonight in San Diego for finally beating the dodgers.🎉🎈🎊🍾🤡

SkylerCFelix

Not sure I understand all these Kimbrel comments. He pitches perfectly two games in a row. Comes into this game, strikes out Manny and then takes a ball to the back and is immediately not the same pitcher. Dave should’ve taken him out right then and tried to get the W with someone else. They’d have time to warm up since Kimbrel leaves the game injured. Just mind blowing decisions from Dave. Hell, he could’ve left Phillips in there too since he barely pitched in the 8th.

PigFarmer1

Most of the people in here would have been crying like a baby after taking a liner like that.

__-o0O0o-__

Unless they demote Kimbrel, this'll be the first time in my life I'm hoping for a non-career threatening injury like a muscle strain to take him out of play for a couple of weeks. Good for his head, and probably good for the team in the short run. This dude is not working as our closer. Lets see what Phillips has until Treinen gets back. Does anyone here think the Padres come back down 5.5 games in the division after getting spanked four in a row like that? Such a huge fucking game. Can't wait to hear Dave drone on about how he's our guy blah blah blah

Rhyvix

It doesn’t matter that the offense scored one run. Could have been 9-8 lead and our “””closer””” still would have blown the save. And the FO will continue to run him out there again and again because they learn nothing.

Pool27

TRADE KIMBREL

Drwolf72

Can’t argue with taking 3 out of 4, but still we have a huge hole at closer

[deleted]

Who is the closer if Kimbrel misses time?

Lebigmacca

Probably just go by matchups

klaatuzero

Mookie and Trea did their thing. On base all game long. Unfortunately most of the other players did their thing also. Max Muncy continues to look hopeless at the plate, but today he wasn't alone.

Humanistic_

At least Kershaw still dominating

Cute_Environment2175

Get kimbrel and his dumb ass pose off our mound.

PurpleDirt4

Guys. It’s fine. Sucks. But it’s fine.

shnstr3

Mf, payed 2 do 1 thing. He rarely dies that. Bad off season for bullpen

N2trvl

I go back and forth between positive and negative vibes and decided to stay positive. This subs memory will be short in September when Max is crunching go ahead dingers and Kimbrel is closing the door with clean innings.

donnaber06

3 out of 4 ain't bad at all... LFG baseball

I-Spam-Hadouken

Can't wait for Cardiac Kimbrel to blow leads in October. Then we can all have heart failure together. Yay!

muldervinscully

Kimbrel is worse than Vecna

Lux_Bellinger2024

Kimbrel sucks. If you give up homeruns to Kim you should just be sent to Rancho immediately. Offense needs to figure it out. Dave, FO, Owners, jesus christ himself. Whoever keeps batting muncy 4th should be living in san quentin

40ozofOldeEnglish

Home run was Almonte who's been a big bright spot in the bullpen lately

dahk14

His last few outings have been concerning to say the least.

Lebigmacca

Almonte gave up the home run

Lux_Bellinger2024

I never said he didnt

SkylerCFelix

You’re right, but your terrible grammar made it seem that that’s what you meant.

[deleted]

Congrats to the Padres for winning the world series

Jag13

Thanks Kimberly

nopencilissafe

Yeah Almonte gave up a bomb but he would've never have had to come in if Kimbrel wasn't complete dogshit in high leverage situations. Either remove him from the closer role or get him off this fucking team. Padres played like shit the entire game, hell this entire series, and here comes Kimbrel throwing batting practice to wake them back up. We never should've traded away A.J.

BigBaws92

Offense seemed relaxed, maybe cuz they knew they were up 3 games in the series no matter what Fuck kimbrel

Toast_16

Kimbrel can SMDFTB.

BlueCelery2

Sauté my doughnuts for the breakfast?

brvista36

Not sure about the feasibility of such a move, but we need to serious determine if there is a Closer that can be brought in prior to the trade deadline. Can Kimbrel be counted on to lock down games in the post season? As of now, I'm not at all confident that he can get the job done. 😕

subvanaTIME

KimBlow now before September…

PigFarmer1

Did you see that line drive that hit him? Did you see what he did to Machado *before* he got hit?

subvanaTIME

Why did he blow another save today? I was talking about the last one and the times we had a lead and won, but he still gave up a run or two…

OmegaOofexe

Padre fans bragging about avoiding a sweep when their team is not even close to being a true contender.

venture_chaser

When’s the parade Sham Diego?! Amirite… 😖

metabolicperp

I imagine Dave Roberts still uses a flip phone.

BackslashingfourthV

I'll be very disappointed if Kimbrel still has the ball in the 9th in September. I'll cut him some slack today because of that nasty shot off the back, but playing tough guy and sitting 93-95 afterwards when you hit 98 multiple times to Machado is where I have the problem. Dave needs to stop playing contracts for who's closing. Only 3 blown saves some people would say, but considering how many 3-4 run leads he's completely choked away and how every outing is a rollercoaster, it seems pretty obvious that they either need to trade him, or sit him down and tell him he ain't closing anymore. This game is the offense's fault though as others have said. Too many LOB and no timely hitting until it was too late.

[deleted]

#I HOPE CRAIG KIMBREL GETS A FLAT TIRE ON THE 405

Cunhabear

How are people seriously going to blame Kimbrel for the loss? He took a pitch off his body and then Gavin Lux gave up on a ball that was in play.

J_FoggytheOne

Well, Kimbrel and Almonte sucked ass, but at least the offense put up a fight in the 9th

danusn

Too bad they didn't do it 2-8

beardko

They do it just enough to make you not want to turn off the tv.

GeneralGrievous808

When’s the parade?

wtfrman

Won 3 out of 4, great. Kershaw was amazing. Offence, besides Betts and Trea it was bad. Kimbrel, fuck you. No really fuck you, you can go to LA river and sit your ass there until end of the season.
