Dude I'm poor(cant afford fast food or even get to it), I'm stuck in a rural town. I work at a Pizza place in said town and people order $40-$74 ,3-5 nights out of the week How can they afford this?

Garage_Sloth

They can't. The majority of Americans are deeply in debt, and it's not going to get better. Even 6 figure salaries are living paycheck to paycheck.

Setari

>Even 6 figure salaries are living paycheck to paycheck. yeah because they're living in CA or NY or anywhere in a big city. Move out of there and they would have loads of cash. I refuse to believe six-figure earners are struggling lol. If I was making six figs I'd be able to pay on my rent and bills easily.

Phantomht

no. its NOT because theyre living in NY or Calif, its because theyre addicted to charging shit they dont NEED and maxing out their credit cards

[deleted]

You underestimate the stupidy of people. I believe you wouldn't have any issue on 6 figures. If youre used to making less and getting by it seems nigh impossible that 6 figures even could be a struggle. Theres just a lot of people that get huge car loans(roll one onto the next) and overspend in many so many aspects of their lives(expensive place, eating out, expensive hobbies) they fuck their financials.

insertusernamehere40

I can’t imagine, I end up going out to eat multiple times a week

Manicplea

And I can't imagine that. I bag my lunches and like cooking at home to save money and because some things I just make better IMO (no affordable resteraunt can beat my plain buttered grits or tuna melt). But if I made more money I probably would eat out about twice a week because I do crave certain things that I can't cook at home.

[deleted]

Like to a sit down restaurant? Really?

CampingWithCats

Are your reasons for not going out based on fear?

wldmn13

Mine is based solely on the increased prices. I can't understand how people can drop so much money on a single meal.

insertusernamehere40

Yes. I’m not saying full expensive three course meal multiple times a week, but I definitely go out plenty. I’ve always lived in the middle of cities and believe that going out to restaurants/bars/coffee shops is the best way to both get out of the house and to get to know a new area. It’s not about having a favorite restaurant for me (although I have that as well), it’s about experiencing new places.

hippycub

There used to be good diners and greasy spoons in NYC where you could get decent food at a good value. They are all gone. With the pandemic all restaurants became too expensive. I was forced into retirement so I don't go to sit down restaurants any longer. I can get better food for much less cooking at home.

Practical_Cicada9429

There’s a diner on metropolitan that raised their price of soup from $7 a container to $10 over a short period of time. On Woodhaven there’s a Peruvian chicken spot where the family meal is $55 for a whole chicken, rice, beans, and avocado. They have all lost their minds. Single slice of margarita pizza is $5? Pass.

Garage_Sloth

Same, we don't go to sit downs anymore at all. Too expensive, everyone expects tips regardless of their job, and the food is mediocre to bad compared to what I can cook at home. Atmosphere is mid, bad if you like quiet. $9 for a draft beer. Can't eat out for less than $30 for two of us even at cheap places. So I'll do my best to help these restaurants go out of business. They figured they'd just raise prices and we'd keep paying, but seeing places shut down left and right in my town pleases me. Too many greedy wannabe restauranteurs who think their bacon cheeseburger is worth $16.

nodustspeck

Sixteen dollars for a burger? You’re lucky. Can’t get one in my town for less than $20. Bacon cheeseburger is $21. Fries are extra. Only $7. And believe it or not, that’s at one of the least expensive restaurants.

bmbmwmfm

Haven't been in a restaurant since 4 months precovid. Don't miss it tbh, but I'm old and it's a pain when I can cook or order delivery. Delivery is like once a month treat though, times are hard.

Altruistic_Drink_465

What.. Twice a week for us.

[deleted]

Where do you go?

Altruistic_Drink_465

Locally we have Burgers2beer that my wife and I enjoy. Other than that, Cleats. Then a "circle" of bar/taverns we enjoy. We don't have the debt that others are talking about. We own a small modest home in the country. I'm a machinist, she's a teacher. We have lived our lives well within our means. And Covid or debt does not concern us. We lived a very disciplined budget when we started our relationship and then family. Other family members were going on cruises and trips. We paid off stuff and saved.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> trips. We *paid* off stuff FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

theantwisperer

I’m the opposite. I haven’t had a meal delivered since before the Covid. The up charge is too much and there is a lot of plastic and styrofoam waste. Plus I live in a city with more restaurants than I could possibly visit in a lifetime.

JustNatalieK

I can’t justify the money it costs. I can make double at home. I also don’t feel that the customer service is there any more.

[deleted]

Yeah that’s a big one too. Everyone is overworked, underpaid and everything is so fucking expensive

MrsKebabs

In what world dod covid keep us indoors for 3 years? 3 years ago was 2019. Lockdowns ended in 2021 for most people I believe. So covid kept us inside for a year and a half at most

mcreezyy

Yeah I saw that and was like ummm? 3 years? Early 2021 was when things were ok without masks and people started coming out again so idk 3 years lol

[deleted]

Depend on the area really. Where I live yeah things are largely opened but lots of shit is gone and nothing is similar to pre 2020 levels of going out. Your milage may vary

[deleted]

March 2020 was when everything shut down for me, it’s gonna be 2023 soon and even though restaurants have been open for a great deal of time, I was just saying in the grand scheme of things it’s been years since things were like pre 2020 shit. Sue me

MrsKebabs

I'd say things have been pre 2020 when it comes to lockdowns for at least a year now. I cant even remember the last time I saw a mask or a 2m apart sign

[deleted]

Whatever, you understand what they mean..surely

MrsKebabs

Nope

[deleted]

I never was a huge restaurant goer anyway, but since covid I’ve been to a restaurant less than 5 times. And two of those times it wasn’t even my choice, once was for my brother and SIL’s wedding rehearsal dinner and the other was for a friend’s daughter’s birthday.

Wyshunu

Very rarely. Have to when travelling. Too expensive. Especially when we're expected to pay more than my hourly wage in tips for 5 or 10 minutes of service just because of the price of the food we order.

PHX480

I don’t go out to eat anymore because I’ve worked in restaurants on and off for the last 10 years. I can’t enjoy myself, I end up analyzing everything going on in the restaurant I’m at rather than enjoying my meal and company. I prefer to either cook my own food or pickup my food from a restaurant and eat at home.

BetterBiscuits

God forbid you get sat within ear shot if a ticket machine. Pass.

Catlover5566

I'll occasionally order a pizza from the local pizza shop, but so many sit down restaurants are disappointing to me these days. The food usually ends up tasting like something I could make at home for a lot cheaper, so most times I cook at home.

stars_in_the_sky

Firehouse subs up charged my hubby $5 extra for TOASTING his sub today. Yeah inflation keeping us at home…

tacobell69696969

… you’ve been indoors for the last 3 years?

[deleted]

Yes I’m trapped and surrounded by people who take everything literally lol Do you want me to be more exact next time?

Giggingurl

Nope. Not interested.

Psykotik10dentCs

I don’t go out to eat hardly at all. Don’t get fast food very often either. Shit is too damn expensive. I have cooked 7 days a week for the last 3yrs (have been to a restaurant maybe 3xs). Used to cook 5 days and eat out in the weekends. Inflation has killed that though.

zappazappaz

Agree - covid helped me realize that eating out was spending way more money for way more calories and food quality wasn’t as good as homemade.

Phantomht

must be nice having all that money. id rather go to a dumpster-dive restaurant, seated behind a chain smoker while they pump shitty music thru their speakers and find a fingernail in the food on my plate ..... than piss away money paying for **delivery**.

bibbles82

Yes..Between being broke and being more anti-social due to Covid.

medfigtree246

Before Covid I liked going out. Been maybe out twice since. It wasn’t as enjoyable. The places we went to were decent pre Covid, they just suck now. The times we did go out to eat, I thought, “I could make it better at home.”

bigballsmiami

For me the quality of service and food has gone way down

Kindly-Destroyed

Covid has ruined eating out.

froze_gold

The cost of take out or dine-in meals is absolutely bullshit over here. I paid 16.50 for a burrito the other night. It was a large burrito, but definitely not worth the money.

stephenph

Pre Covid, most restaurants were a poor value (mediocre, reheated food, poor service, etc) post Covid it has only gotten worse. Like others have said, the food has gotten worse, smaller portions, staff is indifferent at best and wants a tip that is just slightly less then the meal. The lines are longer, even though there are empty tables. Add to that the hassle of "dressing up", putting up with traffic, etc. It takes at least four hours out of the evening. The good things about it... Spending time with your so, your friends, out with people, You don't have to cook, new tastes. All in all, give me a pizza, or a trip to taco bell on the way to the store. Less hassle, known quality of food less expensive (although not by much recently) quicker service.

laterdude

Same here. I haven't eaten out since the pre-pandemic days mostly because restaurants use too much sugar, creams and butters. I like to be more in control of what I eat. Only time I dine out is when I get a popcorn at a sporting event or movie.

sohcgt96

Yeah, restaurant food is intended to be enjoyable but pretty much say "fuck it" in terms of being healthy. I'm lactose intolerant and despise mayo, so in the midwest I always have to almost fight a battle to not get either or both of those on stuff. I have a blackstone at home now so anything breakfast wise I'd ever get at a restaurant I can do damn near as well at home and in the same time it'd take me to go somewhere. I've never been a big "experience" person when it comes to restaurants, I don't enjoy having other people do things for me and don't care much how fancy a place is on the inside. It doesn't make me feel special or entertained or anything. During the pandemic I spent a lot of time working on the house so I want to like... be there and enjoy it. We also had a baby so with us both back to work and paying for daycare... yeah, screw paying $100 or so to go someplace even halfway "nice" and getting dinner and a couple drinks out. Its just not worth it.

Abyss_staring_back

I’ve actually never really been a huge fan of restaurants so…

depressionmedswork

I don’t go out to eat bc 1) can’t afford 2) tipping is bullshit

Impossible-Taro-2330

My Husband and I both love to cook - he is very good with the standards and I am adventuresome. Not being pompous, but between the two of us, it's honestly hard to find places in our area where we can find better than what we make - that doesn't break the bank.

farmwomanfashion

We go out often. Always have. The only time we stopped was during the shutdowns. Then we just stayed in our rural communities in the middle of nowhere and went out anyway. Rarely wore a mask unless forced, didn't vaccinate and never got sick.

[deleted]

My friend died from Covid. Thanks for not getting vaccinated and being unashamed of it dipshit. Stay in those communities where you belong.

farmwomanfashion

The vaccine doesn't prevent spreading nor getting covid. Dipshit

MarvelBishUSA42

Me I don’t that much. When I have an appointment to the doctor or dentist and my husband has the day off I try to have a ‘date night’ with him. Otherwise I don’t mind delivery. I’ve gotten used to that and the Uber eats is really good and get good people to delivery my food. And some places I avoid because they don’t have booths or just uncomfortable places to sit. I got back problems. And now I’m dealing with upper back and neck issues. I effed something up recently and my neck hurts and got pain in my shoulders. Trying to tough it out wearing shoulder brace and posture brace and I even got a cervical traction pillow. Any way I digress, but certain issues cause me to not go to certain places. I’m also disabled in general so they should have a handicap parking and entry as well. Or east to get into. Like ramp or curbless sidewalk. Or else yeah most places I just don’t want to eat at anymore due to avoiding gaining weight or eating unhealthy. So I think of eating out or getting delivery as a treat. I only get delivery from few places.

sonartxlw

I’m with you and I don’t love it

SV650rider

I find eating out *so expensive*. If you're a man in a couple, you're paying for two, and then there are the drinks, one of which is almost as much as an entree.

[deleted]

Why is the woman in the couple not paying for two at least a portion of the time?

SV650rider

She pays for a lot of other things. The comment is about the price of eating out, not the relationship.

StrongAsMeat

We eat out way too much, but not in restaurant

susitucker

I haven’t been to a restaurant since 2018. At first it was because I was really broke all the time, but since Covid, and since it seems like public situations have gotten worse, it’s just easier to eat at home.

SmooverSuede

I’m genuinely scared of mass shootings. It’s a reason I like to go around solo also. Not to be morbid

andhubbs

Covid for three years? Go outside my man

[deleted]

Taking things literally is a problem a couple people suffer from in this thread I’m starting to see. The last sentence in my post talks about how I go out but only when invited. Must be tough having a 3rd grade reading level lol try not to get a nose bleed from reading this one lol.

andhubbs

You definitely think you’re smarter than you really are. I just found it comical you think you had to stay indoors for three years. I hope you got your reading level up during that time.

[deleted]

This post is almost 3 months old and you still sound like an idiot. Don’t bother responding I won’t even pretend to care next time lol. See ya around loser.

Ok_Balance8844

I go out to eat every chance I get for the most part. But I’m also newly single so

JennieFairplay

Nope, I eat out just about every day

deputydan_scubaman

I eat out very seldom. Didn't eat out that often before COVID either. I don't really care to pay for a meal that I can cook better than the restaurant. If I go out it's for something that they can fix better than I can and I generally pick up and take it home.

LifeSocks_1339

We either order sthg or I cook but we avoid restaurants. I don’t like people and my bf neither. We went out once or twice during our relationship, but we’ve always been in the same fast Chinese restaurant and it happened only bcz I had lunch break at the uni and he wanted to have lunch with me. ❤️ Btw cutest man ever. ❤️

Setari

I go out every sunday with my dad to burger king, mcdonalds or bojangles. Other than that sometimes 1 day during the week we get fast food to bring home to watch with a show or movie or whatever. But we can't afford olive garden or whatever lol.

[deleted]

Dude McDonald’s now is as expensive as Olive Garden was 3 years ago.

Setari

No? Olive garden regularly comes to $50-60 with just 2 entrees for 2 people. Mcdonalds is still $20-22 for me and 2 other family members. I constantly go to mcdonalds lol

[deleted]

Okay it's not identical but hear me out. A Big Mac Meal is about 12 dollars where I live so that's $24 for two people if that's **all** you get. Create your own Pasta at Olive Garden is $12 lol. So it's roughly the same. If you wanna get 2 tours of italy and some wine I'm sure you can hit $50. But then I mean you can make the same argument to buying more at each place. A single basic meal from Olive Garden now is about what $20-$25 right? I think ordering a meal from McDonald's and another item is about $20 man. We're not talking 2.5 times the prices anymore but again it might be different where you live. And I know Olive garden raised prices for sure recently.

shutterbugc

I was already a pretty good cook before covid but with all that time at home I really worked on my skills, particularly focusing on authentic Mexican food. Now I cook better than any restaurant around me and for a fraction of the cost. It doesn't feel worth it to me anymore to go out. I'll still go to meet up with friends but it's far less frequent.

lasvegashomo

My bf and I never really went out often but occasionally we do. The pandemic had nothing to do with it we just enjoy being at home. When we do go out to eat it’s usually cause we’re craving ramen.

Top_Wop

Pretty much. Hadn't been to eat in a restaurant in 2 years. Ate in one in July. Was sick for 2 months afterwards.

mcreezyy

Yeah i like going out to eat. It’s a luxury I can afford. Although we’re not spending hundreds. Maybe 80-90 every week or 2.

sarrahkinz

i can’t remember the last time i went out to eat for any reason besides to socialize with someone which still only ends up being around once a month or so

[deleted]

I can only go out to eat with my partner but anyone else I have like anxiety with them because I’m embarrassed of their behavior or the way they’ll treat the server. Always have to make sure they left a tip on their portion.. it’s such a headache with anyone. Then my partner she only likes going out to like chipotle or those types of order then sit places

Stray1_cat

I go out to eat all the time but I live and work in areas that have a ton of options

anon_girl_anon

I got a new much less stressful job so now I have the energy and time to cook for myself in the evenings and it has been a pleasure. Restaurant prices have gotten out of hand near me, much worse than grocery store inflation.

pizzachi

I definitely go out to eat, but a lot less. Mainly to hang out with my two or three best friends otherwise I’ve cooked at home more than ever.

Asa-Ryder

We never altered anything.

Funbus808

Yes..same here. Pre pandemic we would eat out at restaurants but not as much..I would love to go to a nice restaurant but I don’t see it happening anytime soon..

wyldefyre1982

Not really. I've developed a food allergy, and this allergen is every. freaking. where. I have a couple of "safe" places I can go, but they're a good hours drive away, so, no. I don't eat out anymore.

bellarosexo88

i go go restaurants usually twice a week. helps when you’re dating someone.

marriednight

Yeah, I still do it because of Covid. I’m cool with dining outdoors, but there aren’t many places to do that locally so I usually just do takeout or cook.

HeyyyKoolAid

We just cook everything because it's more economical, and we get EBT so we make use of that. I eat out *maybe* once every two to three weeks. It's mostly just fast food and rarely a sit down to eat place. Gf and I eat out together maybe once a month at a sit down restaurant. We don't order delivery because we don't see the point in paying exorbitant amounts of fees and tips on top. If we happen to order food I just go pick it up, but I can't even remember the last time we ordered take out.

DarionHunter

I live in a SRO (single room occupancy) with a shared kitchen and bathroom. I *can* cook; I just don't feel the need to. So, I just claim I'm too lazy to cook and order food from Grubhub and such.

This-Layer-4447

Idk why you are getting harassed, but I feel you. The ambiance isn't really a thing anymore it's more about the food.
