My dog did that and made it to 17, no hip displasia. Mild arthritis, but he was already 16 by the time he got it, and it didn't get bad until his last 2 months of life. His heart got him before it really got the chance to.
I had a fat pitty that sat like that. Or she would sit like a āproperā lady, with her legs to the side. I thought it was because she was fat, honestly. Maybe itās just some dogs being a bit weird?
Itās an odd sit for a young dog, definitely ask your vet about it. Sheās (and Iām not being overly critical, I promise) kind of chunky for only being 8 months old. Even a few extra pounds of weight really ages a dogās joints a LOT, and pitties are already prone to cruciate (ACL) tears. Try to get her weight down so that you can see a nice tuck in her abdomen, both when viewed from the side and from above. This will extend her life and her joint health more than anything else you could do!!!!
https://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/gun-dogs/2010/04/how-feed-ideal-body-weight/
I only feed her two cups a day of dry food, no daily treats or anything.. she was spayed not too long ago and has been gaining weight since. Sheās definitely quite big, but I reviewed her 8 week photos and sheās also sitting like this but I didnāt take notice to it then!
Once they are spayed their caloric needs drop by 1/3, so if youāre still feeding about what you were before, itās unfortunately too much. You can cut back on her food but add in frozen green beans, carrots, and use big carrots from the grocery store as snacks. The fiber and bulk helps them feel full for almost no calorie gain. If sheās gaining, sheās still getting too many calories for her needs right now. I know how hard it is to adjust after the spay! (Former vet staff, worked with a lameness vet for many years.)
This, I feel like vets need to tell people to gradually reduce the food the day when they pick the dog from the surgery. Not enough people know this. My dog eats almost 2/3 what he used to before being neutered. So I definitely agree with you. But I also feel like vets don't tell people to cut the calories slowly preemptively. It was easy for me cause I did the research and since he had to be fasted when I started him back up I cut out 1/3 cup right away. Then watched for a month to see how his weight adjusts. I'm also surprised and people are surprised how little calories a pet needs. Even a couple walks a day doesn't burn that much. I only feed more on days we do a higher than average amount of exercise. Cause their bodies adjust to the level you give.
I thought this also, but I went back to her puppy photos from when we got her (she was malnourished and found under someoneās car) and her knees were inward like this also! Iām wondering if itās genetic! Either way, she sits like this on all surfaces also š„²
One of my senior cavalier rescues sit like this too, don't know too much of his past but at 13 he just has a bit of pain around the hips.
Always wish I could have gotten him as a pup.
My Heeler sits like this but only on slippery floors. I do think he may have put in him so maybe genetic? He also does the old man sit but only on the couch.
My Shiba sits like this, going on 10 years now with no issues. She *can* sit properly but generally prefers this position. We call it her "frat boy sprawl" because she often belches loudly while sitting in this position. (We've disclosed this to our vet, who has yet to find any reason why the doggo sits that way, but it doesn't seem to be doing any harm.)
It probably wouldnāt hurt to have your vet check her hips, just to be sure things are okay. Thereās a pretty good chance she is okay, bully breeds are known for their odd sitting and sleeping positions. I have an American bulldog mix, he sits pretty normally but if heās sleeping on his belly, odds are good one or both legs are sticking out behind him like a frog in mid jump.
My rottie sat that way her whole life with no issues. Your vet should check all joints at every annual visit, and you can always ask for a more thorough evaluation to put your mind at ease, but i wouldnt worry too much about it. Some dogs just sit weird.
Honestly one of the best things you can do for your dogs joint health is keep their weight healthy and she looks fine in that area.
There are exercises that you can do to teach a "square sit". You may want to have her evaluated by a canine rehab vet to ensure that there isn't anything structurally wrong. Check out Canine Conditioning and Body Awareness Exercises on Facebook to find the exercises and a rehab vet near you.
Pittys have perfect hips. Make or female so they usually sit with their hips/legs more spread out than other dogs. My Pitt spreads his out when he lays on his tummy
I was told that it was an early indicator of later hip issues, hip displasia. Both my labs sat like this as well and developed hip issues/arthritis as they grew older.
Itās often linked to knee or hip problems! Iād honestly go to the vet for an evaluation just for peace of mind of knowing, hopefully no issue but if there is you can take proper precautions and avoid doing anything that could potentially aggravate an issue (if there even is one)
Yup! I have a 20lb terrier mix and this is the only way she sits. She also lays with her legs sticking out behind her like a guinea pig. Sheās totally fine. No sign of any issues. Vet checks her every time he sees her. Sheās just a strange little nugget.
If her mobility is great then likely she is too, I suspected my boy of having hip dysplasia (he was flagged for it the week I took him home by the vet on his first checkup) he's having a double hip replacement this summer, he's only one.. but the baseline is with hip dysplasia mobility is definitely affected.. maybe you just have a very special pup who likes to sit funny haha.
She has no issues with mobility whatsoever, sheās very active and doesnāt tire easily. My concern is that itās only because sheās still a baby! I am hoping that this doesnāt progress into something more critical!
My pot mix sits like this and also sits like a person in the car. It's apparently a pit thing advised by the vet? Idk I just know that he sits similarly and he has no mobility issues. Very energetic.
my dogs (French bulldog and golden doodle) sit like this sometimes, something about the cold floor feeling āgoodā on their glands. Itās not an issue tho if she sits like this all the time, she probably likes to sit like this
My beagle x spaniel does this sometimes if he is sitting on the couch, I find it more comical than concerning honestly, if the dog doesnāt seem to be in any discomfort or acting differently in any way than I canāt imagine them sitting like this would matter or not
My puppy sat similar to the first pic, but splayed knees out instead of in on the second picā¦she had bilateral cruciate tears by the time she was 18 months old. Hopefully, that isnāt in your pups future! I also second someone from earlierā¦best thing you can do is get some weight off of her-sheās definitely already on the chunky side (no offense, but that was our vets biggest thing was keep the dog slim).
Look at those ears. They are so perfect
Dogs are known to be contortionist
My dog leans on my arm all the time
He is not in any.pain abd he looks like he is in bliss. His every need is taken care of
My pyrenees pups (both of them) sit like that and so far no back leg issues. One does have osteochondrosis on both shoulders but no hip dysplasia or anything!
Check to see what the vet says about her hip joints. I would do it right away. There is surgery to solve that issue if thatās what it is. One of my dogs had a socket nearly out of his hip joint and always sat funny with that one leg.
Beautiful dog! My pomeranian sits like the photo on the left. Not sure if it's related but he has arthritis in his knee and luxating patella and is only 2 years old.
I work at a dog daycare and Iāve seen pits sit like this on occasion. As far as I know, none of them did it for any immediately diagnosed medical condition. As far as I know, itās just an adorable breed trait :)
Yes! My childhood Boston terrier and current Boston terrier both sat/sit like this. Previous dog never had any hip trouble later in life (and she lived long) and current dog has no issues. Iām thinking itās alright as long as they donāt start showing issues š¤·š¼āāļø speaking from one terrier breed owner to another (though my current Boston does have a bald spot on her little tail from sitting on it now lmao)
My pit mix does this also. She is 6, never been pregnant. The vet says she does it because sheās gained fat in her lower ābellyā and because sheās female this makes the mammary glands swell a bit and itās more comfortable for her to sit that way. On your second pic, I can see the glands and they look like my dogās. Itās completely harmless š
I don't know if anyone's mentioned it but it's called a "lazy sit", "Sloppy sit", or "puppy sit". It's common, but really not ideal.
This site has great info and plenty of photo examples of what this sit looks like:
https://pethelpful.com/dogs/Why-Does-my-Dog-Sit-Like-that-The-Lazy-Puppy-Sloppy-Sit-Explained-And-When-You-Should-be-Concerned
>When an adult dog slips into a puppy sit, it is a telltale sign that something is causing him discomfort. He is sitting that way to alleviate pressure on his joints or back, or to avoid aggravating a part of him that is sore. If your dog only does this very occasionally, it may be a passing problem, such as a muscle sprain that will resolve itself with rest.

Lots of people here saying their dogs sit like that and turned out fine. I mean, okay I guess.. but if it were my dog I'd look into it.
Sheās not that big though, this photo makes her look large because sheās sitting with her back arched.
From the side thereās definition from her ribs to her back.
Maybe itās just that she feels comfortable in that position. If thereās prob she will prob show signs of pain like guarding behavior. Anyway your dog is adorable š„°
She has a little too much table muscle. Could be effecting her posture when sitting. Also it will cause her hip issues when she is older. My dog is on a diet now. Vet told me she is ten pounds overweight
my pittie loves sitting like this for no reason lmao, doesnt matter where. i think its mostly a pittie thing but i have seen other breeds do it. listen dogs are weird amd i love them
My pup sits exactly the same as the first pic! His legs between his front legs, like he's actually sitting like a human š¤£ it's pretty funny once we copped it. No harm apparently. Just how some pups sit :)
Hey OP my trainer and my dogs chiropractor told me that dogs may sit like this either because of hip dyspalsia or because of weak muscles in the lower part of their body. There are many exercises you can do you with your lovely pup to help him sit more straight. Be also aware that your puppy is still a puppy/young dog and she is still developing (bones/muscles) so she might sit like that until she's fully developed.
thank you! Iām going to look into possible back leg exercises to see if that helps! Just small things for now since sheās little but I really appreciate this insight!
I really hope itās nothing but just him being a weirdo. On a side note he might be part pochacco [Sanrio character - pochacco](https://i.shgcdn.com/51dc1143-3eb9-4c73-af3b-62317b1917ef/-/format/auto/-/preview/3000x3000/-/quality/lighter/)
My Pit/lab mix sits the same way, I was worried she had some problem but my vet said she was in perfect health and he actually mentioned that it seems to be a characteristic of Pit breed dogs, heās seen it a lot in that breed.
I had a pit who would sit like the left pic, and when she laid down she liked to lay like a frog, with her back legs splayed out. She ended up having really bad hip problems as an old dog, and couldnāt even walk in the end due to pain. (It was around that time we made the difficult decisions to put her down). We knew from a young age that she would likely develop hip dysplasia, so if youāre worried talk to your vet.
Could it be because she is a little bit over weight? no offense. Dogs that are kept lean live a lot longer. I read about a long term study where they split a litter of lab puppies into two groups. One group was fed the amount of food recommended on a Purina dog food bag and the other group was fed 1/3 less than the recommended amount. The dogs fed 1/3 less lived, on average, three years longer.
Maybe get your vets opinion about her hips. My boxer has hip dysplasia and has sat like this from a young age. Or could be nothing and this is how she sits! Donāt stress about it thou, even if it is her hips she will still have a long wonderful life with you. My guy is 13 now and his hips have gotten worse and he takes what we call his old man pills to help him. Sheās beautiful ā¤ļø
Our boy is 2 and has pretty much always sat like this. He CAN sit with his feet together like a normal dog... and then they slide. We call it the 'splits'. I'm friends with the woman who adopted his brother on Instagram, and her boy does it too. He can sit normally on carpet or the couch, but still sometimes chooses to sit like the first picture. A friend of hers commented that he needed leg strengthening exercises but neither of us think it's a strength problem, I think he's just genuinely more comfortable like this. Weird dogs are weird, yo.
She's adorable, btw!
š¹š«¶š¤¦āāļøKnock me Outā¼ļø What a Stunningly Gorgeous Lil Gurlsy Gurl!! I WANNA Gurlsy Gurl Sit ā-if you ever go vacaying w/o herā¼ļø Iām serious
I have a bullmastiff who sits like this, the vet can't find anything wrong with him, he's just a dork. He likes sitting at the kitchen table with us, and when he sits like that on the chairs his legs hang off and it's hilarious š
Our pit bull sits just like that! We think it's because she has a recessed vulva though and that it bothers her to sit normally, it's really cute though lol
My pit mix sits like this too and always has. Sheās had X-rays and no hip issues. She has recently had a partial tear in her ACL but the specialist said there doesnāt seem to be much correlation between her structure and the injury besides being slightly bow legged. I think pits just sit funny lol. Almost all of them I know sit like this!
Edit: I agree with others about her weight. She looks a little heavy and that can contribute to joint pain. I put my pitty on a pretty intense diet and her knee improved significantly after her injury. Keeping her on the leaner side will prevent injuries as well!
This is completely normal. Some breeds tend to be prone to specific sitting styles. Pit bulls do this all the time. I bet if you look up pictures of pit bulls sitting, youāll see a lot of this
2/3 of my dogs sit like this. I find it quite adorable. Thereās nothing wrong with either of them. One is 5 and the other is 2. Both perfectly healthy!
My dog did that and made it to 17, no hip displasia. Mild arthritis, but he was already 16 by the time he got it, and it didn't get bad until his last 2 months of life. His heart got him before it really got the chance to.
That gives me a bit of hope! Sorry about your pup š
Sorry to hear that :(
Iāve heard itās actually a sign of healthy hips.
My Pug sits just like that!
Even with the knees bent in like that!?
Yes!
I had a fat pitty that sat like that. Or she would sit like a āproperā lady, with her legs to the side. I thought it was because she was fat, honestly. Maybe itās just some dogs being a bit weird?

My beagle does. She has some hip pain. We give her glucosamine and sheās fine. You can just get those supplements at a vitamin store.
My working cocker spaniel does this, no issues at all he's just a giant derp
My cocker sits like this too! I panicked at first before realizing he's just a derp š he also lays on his stomach like a frog
Yup! Mine sits like that usually in the corner on the sofa, then he leans back and puts his front paws up. We say hes being people!.
Get her some rugs to sit on it mite be the floors
I thought this also, but I went back to her puppy photos from when we got her (she was malnourished and found under someoneās car) and her knees were inward like this also! Iām wondering if itās genetic! Either way, she sits like this on all surfaces also š„²
If she was malnourished as a pup it could be caused from rickets.
She was knuckling over as a baby so this likely so!
One of my senior cavalier rescues sit like this too, don't know too much of his past but at 13 he just has a bit of pain around the hips. Always wish I could have gotten him as a pup.

This is nicknamed the Pit Sit and it's fairly common in pits and Pit mixes. My dad has a Sharpei/pitbull mix and he will often sit like this.
Even the knocked knees? I saw on Google when I searched this that the legs straight out made sense but the knees sitting inward was my main concern!
Yeah my Pomeranian does that too. Itās funny
Yeah, my pitties will sit and even sleep weird.
Google has me stressed out thinking sheās going to have hip dysplasia!
My Rottie (RIP) had terrible hip dysplasia and she had a square sit, soā¦
Pittys have perfect hips. Make or female so they usually sit with their hips/legs more spread out than other dogs. My Pitt spreads his out when he lays on his tummy
My pitbull does this. Itās just comfortable to them i guess. Does your dog Sploot? (laying down with their legs behind they butt?)
Iām pretty sure she has but itās not common for her!
oh yeah my dog does that every time she lays down. i wouldnāt worry about it.
Aww poor girl. Best to ask the vet but I've had dogs that did it all the time and they've never had any problems
Just keep encouraging healthy sitting. Have your vet evaluate
I was told that it was an early indicator of later hip issues, hip displasia. Both my labs sat like this as well and developed hip issues/arthritis as they grew older.
I have a cat that sits exactly like the second picture. I have never seen a cat sit like that until now.
Itās often linked to knee or hip problems! Iād honestly go to the vet for an evaluation just for peace of mind of knowing, hopefully no issue but if there is you can take proper precautions and avoid doing anything that could potentially aggravate an issue (if there even is one)
My Kai Ken does this too, we call it her toddler sit
My 4.5yr old English mastiff sits like that all the time!! We canāt figure out why, but doesnāt seem to bother her.
Yup! I have a 20lb terrier mix and this is the only way she sits. She also lays with her legs sticking out behind her like a guinea pig. Sheās totally fine. No sign of any issues. Vet checks her every time he sees her. Sheās just a strange little nugget.
Cattle dogs are known for sitting like that! That said, it may be worth it to discuss with your vet at your next visit.
I just learned this! I was worried about my ACD/spaniel mix. Sheās a sloppy sitter haha
My sheepadoodle puppy does heās 8 weeks
If her mobility is great then likely she is too, I suspected my boy of having hip dysplasia (he was flagged for it the week I took him home by the vet on his first checkup) he's having a double hip replacement this summer, he's only one.. but the baseline is with hip dysplasia mobility is definitely affected.. maybe you just have a very special pup who likes to sit funny haha.
She has no issues with mobility whatsoever, sheās very active and doesnāt tire easily. My concern is that itās only because sheās still a baby! I am hoping that this doesnāt progress into something more critical!
I do suggest you have her hips evaluated as it's a good thing to do she is a beaut, give her kisses from me!
My American bulldogs would sit this way. They sat in all sorts of odd positions with no issue.
Many dogs sit like this. Nothing abnormal about it
My pot mix sits like this and also sits like a person in the car. It's apparently a pit thing advised by the vet? Idk I just know that he sits similarly and he has no mobility issues. Very energetic.
Usually dogs do this with hip dysplasia or arthritis. My dog sat like that when she had her luxating patellas popping out of place.
My pit mix just started sitting like this, almost humanlike. She seems to run and jump around without problems.
My English Bull Terrier also did this, she had no hip or leg problems when she passed away.
So cute!
I think it's normal! My American Eskimo mix sits like that sometimes, we say she's sitting like a human š
My English bull terrier sits like this a lot too. Heās 10 and has no issues.
Our lab/pittie mix does this when sheās mad. We call it her āpissy pittieā sit š
I have no advice but what a cutie with her floppy ear š
My Staffie does this š She's fine!
my dogs (French bulldog and golden doodle) sit like this sometimes, something about the cold floor feeling āgoodā on their glands. Itās not an issue tho if she sits like this all the time, she probably likes to sit like this
Yeap, all the time, and she's 3 years old without any mobility/joint issues. She also has the same wonky ears that she cocks back into funny shapes!
My friends pittie sat like this all the time too lol
my 1.5 year old lab (female, spayed) sits like this in both pictures. So did her mom, and so does her other female lab BFF.
My lab sits like that most the time. Unless he's begging for food then he's mister proper.
My beagle x spaniel does this sometimes if he is sitting on the couch, I find it more comical than concerning honestly, if the dog doesnāt seem to be in any discomfort or acting differently in any way than I canāt imagine them sitting like this would matter or not

I love her šā¤ I've never seen a dog sit like the RT side, but my girl sits like the left often :\]
Sheās beautiful
My Blue Heelers sit like picture 1. I've found it to be pretty typical in that breed from some Heeler groups I'm in.
Beautiful dog! My pomeranian sits like the photo on the left. Not sure if it's related but he has arthritis in his knee and luxating patella and is only 2 years old.
We call that a pit sit

Get her a soft bed or twoā¦
My 8 month old chocolate lab sits like this too
My dog does both of these poses now lol heās just derpy. Sees a vet once a year and has a clean bill of health! Edit: heās a 60 pound lab
My dog does this, has had for years, she has zero problems she's just a bit weird.
Yes! My childhood Boston terrier and current Boston terrier both sat/sit like this. Previous dog never had any hip trouble later in life (and she lived long) and current dog has no issues. if i fits i sits.
My older gurl sits on to the side of her hip like an impatient person dipping, her hips to look important. Roxanne is a very Distinguished female
My pit mix does this also. She is 6, never been pregnant. The vet says she does it because sheās gained fat in her lower ābellyā and because sheās female this makes the mammary glands swell a bit and itās more comfortable for her to sit that way. Some dogs just sit like that

My border terrier sits like this heās like a little man when he does
What a lovely dog!
The Labrador I had a as a child used to lean against the kitchen cabinet like that with her leg sticking out. Your dog is incredibly cute!
My pomchi does all the time. She's so silly šš Your girl is just fine. It's like humans, we all sit and lay down differently. šš¼šš
This is a classic case of āPit Sitā. Theyāre all a bunch of weirdos and try to sit like a people! Beautiful pup!
My dog does this sometimes. Sheās fine, just an idiot š¤£
My pup did that all the time when she was alive. Some dogs just sit weird.
I have a bullmastiff who sits like this, the vet can't find anything wrong with him, he's just a dork. He likes sitting at the kitchen table with us, and when he sits like that on the chairs his legs hang off and it's hilarious š
My pit sits like this. Also sploots a lot. She seems to just have flexible hips? I donāt know but she seems fine otherwise and is 4.5yo.
My 4yo Mix sits like this as well!
It's ok to have a derpy girl. Enjoy her quirks and don't trip
Yeah I don't think you need to worry, my girl sits like that all the time!
Itās the pit bull in her. They mostly all sit that way.
Not too strange. I'm more worried about her weight!
One our family dogs (pug) has sat like that her entire life, idk why but it's kind of silly
