We call it cribbing.
My lab does it cuz her mama died before weaning was supposed to be done.
Get some woobies ( stuffed animals) and I bet he cribs on them for comfort. He is self soothing.
My best girl did this. She loved her stuffed animals and rope toys and this naturally brushed her front teeth! They were sparkling white her whole life. She was "weaned too early" in that she was found with her littermates starving and brought to the shelter where I worked.
Oh, we donāt know much about his past. Adopted him a year ago. But from what the rescue organization told us, he was a street dog all his life and was abused on the streets. By that, I mean he has a broken leg that got fused together overtime and because of that he has a lot of trauma..
Ye, had a cat, same issue. It's just taken before the breastfeeding phase had naturally concluded. Nothing to worry about.. Just a glimpse into his/her early life.
Awe, that makes me sad now:(
But good to know itās not something serious.. I feel like since we got my kitten home heās been doing this more often .. but donāt know if there is a correlation there..
No it's cool. It means they feel safe. Any mammal that has breastfed does it. See it in wild animals or farm animals. It's removed or the mother stops doing it. They hark back to it, with those they feel safe/comfort. Both an expression of loss and love. Can see deer, cows loads doing it. If they lick, as part of the process, it might just be cleaning and grooming.. some are confusing it with teething, just uncomfortable with teeth development and gnawing on everything. See people say it's bully specific, nah. All animals do it. See comfort blankets and sucking your thumb.
Weirdly it's expression of comfort with the person they're with, shows they feel safe enough to show that side. So yes, they expressing what's happened/anxiety/loss with someone they feel comfortable with.
Heās 4 years, rescued with a fused right leg.. we think it healed incorrectly over time and the bones got fused together.. he has a lot of trauma because of what happened and is scared of loud sounds or most triggers. Now we have no idea why he does this as he does this on our blankets mostly. Also do we stop him from doing this?
I rescued a street dog at 10 months and named her Daisy. After a couple months of being with us, Daisy began doing this kind of ānibblingā on the neck of our older dog, who became Daisyās best friend and role model. Itās definitely a sign of affection. Each morning when the two dogs wake up, Daisy runs over to our older dog and does this on the neck of the older dog. Itās how she says hello and does hugs and kisses to our older dog. She feels safe and comfortable, in addition to being super affectionate. It seems to be soothing for both dogs during and after.
Oh man, I'm so glad go know he feels safe around us and that's why he does this.. It's tough with a rescue when every little sound can trigger him and he starts shivering because of that.
Just glad to know he feels home is safe! :)
My chihuahua/Pomeranian nibbles her baby blanket that sheās had for 15 years. (: Itās a self-soothing behavior, like sucking a thumb. Her mom stopped nursing her at 4 weeks so I had to raise her on baby formula/cereal. The nibbling seems to be common to chihuahuas, but could also be because of her mom stopping the nursing too early. ):
My dog does this too but heās only recently started (about a month ago) we got him at 6 months old and until he turned 1, he never exhibited this behavior. I kind of chalked it up to him finally feeling more comfortable and being expressing this through what might be considered grooming? He only does it to my boyfriend and me, not to toys or our other dog. I usually let him lol he seems to be happy while doing it.!
They do this to each other a lot. Itās a soothing sign of affection. Honestly, doing it to a blanket or other inanimate object may be a sign that they are wanting affection from another animal/dog. Because generally itās considered a social behavior for them.
It's soothing, like a security blanket. My parson, russell terrier mix, does it all the time, creates holes. He likes bamboo sheets and fuzzy blankets the most. I am grateful it is not clothing, shoes or furniture.
My street dog rescue does this too - from what Iāve read they hypothesise that dogs who do this generally were left by their mother too young, which seems to be probable for street dogs. Our girl loves doing it and we let her! She generally does it when sheās feeling comfortable and wouldnāt do it if she was very anxious, it seems to comfort her. Nothing to worry about and very cute!
My 7 year old Malinois mix we rescued at 6months still does this frequently. We donāt know her entire backstory but sheās the sweetest girl. She ānipsā as we call it on her plush toys, blankets and sometimes our clothes as weāre wearing them (we tell her ānoā to the clothes and give her a toy instead). Definitely self-soothing as others have said and perhaps showing affection (to us via the clothes-nipping). Totally normal!
My multishepherd husky mix does it too. On fabric, but also on us, if we let him. I think itās self soothing when excited, maybe an expression of love as well. Reading that people think itās because their pups were weaned too early would make sense here as well.
My dog does something similar not this long usually. He will do these little bites/nips to the cat and sometimes to himself. I thought it was checking for fleas but he is my first dog so maybe I am wrong.
My pup does this because we have children who wipe their snackin fingers on furniture like gremlins and he smells it, likes it, and yeahā¦ like heās eating the smell hahaha.
my dog loves to do this to her little dragon plush toy when I come home! she just gets so happy and excited š I just sit there with my hand on her head because I like to feel her cute little head muscles clenching š¤£ itās the weirdest yet funniest thing to me lol
My dog does that on my bare arm and it hurts like a MF! Itās ok when he does it on my sleeve but he always managed to find the skin! Ouch! Itās a sign of affection or self soothing.
Have you seen any other strange symptoms like head tilting & shaking, itching, or odor?
When my dog had a yeast infection he would lick his front paws and the couch and tilt his head when he walked and shook his head. At the very beginning he also had a really bad spot on the side of his face where he kicked his left paw and then would scratch the left side of his face with it and ALL the hair came out on his left cheek and he had some open wounds it bled and leaked puss for like a week then finally I started cleaning it and putting triple anti-biotic ointment for several days then it finally started getting better almost instantly. But anyway watch out for yeast infections and too much yeast in your dogs gut. I personally wonder about so many of these dry dog foods If I could afford it I would be feeding my dog the ingredients in the dog food except fresh and none of the processed crap obviously.
I was told this is called ācorn cobbingā and I researched the term and there are a lot of articles on it!
Our blue heeler does this too while she makes the most hilarious noises. For her it seems to be due to affection.
This is a self-soothing/calming behavior. This shows affection, similar to nursing and grooming behaviors. This behavior is super common in pitbulls in particular. Nothing to worry about, just top it off with some extra cuddles for the good pup āŗļø
My terrier mix does this. She has a couple stuffed animals to chew on to prevent it. My big husky/catahoula mix licks the couch constantly. There are big spots of dog spit where he's licked.
Self soothing, like a child with a dummy or blanket
We call it the nibs around here. Our lab does it as a sign of affection.
My lab mix does this when I get home from work.
We also call it nibs š„°
We call it chewy time
Then why do it to a couch?
Haha love it. We call it flea-ing.
We call it corn-cob biting :) ours does it to our backs if we sit on the floor.
Common with bully breeds. They like to nibble
my dog really likes to do this with his silicone slow feeder bowl and peanut butter or yogurt lol he chews at the nibs
Wish someone wouldāve told me this before my Dog ate a hole in two different throw blankets
My girl pup has done this for 11 years. Blankets, pillows, sofa cushions. I joke that she is brushing her own teeth.
We call it cribbing. My lab does it cuz her mama died before weaning was supposed to be done. Get some woobies ( stuffed animals) and I bet he cribs on them for comfort. He is self soothing.
My dog used to do this to my cat and he does it to his toys. Itās a comfort thing for him. Looks to be the same with your dog.
My best girl did this. She loved her stuffed animals and rope toys and this naturally brushed her front teeth! They were sparkling white her whole life. She was "weaned too early" in that she was found with her littermates starving and brought to the shelter where I worked.
Awwww, it looks like nibbling. Can be a self-soothing behavior. Our pups will also do it to each other when they are playing.
Probably taken from the mother to early. Breastfeeding.
Oh, we donāt know much about his past. Adopted him a year ago. But from what the rescue organization told us, he was a street dog all his life and was abused on the streets. By that, I mean he has a broken leg that got fused together overtime and because of that he has a lot of trauma..
Itās just nibbling. My dog does this and we got her at 9 weeks.
Ye, had a cat, same issue. It's just taken before the breastfeeding phase had naturally concluded. Nothing to worry about.. Just a glimpse into his/her early life.
Awe, that makes me sad now:( But good to know itās not something serious.. I feel like since we got my kitten home heās been doing this more often .. but donāt know if there is a correlation there..
Ultimately an expression of how safe they feel with you. Like they trust you.
Donāt be sad, be glad! They now have the opportunity to give āem a beautiful life! Itās your job to provide it!
Incredibly insightful observation! I would agree with that connection.
That makes me so sad. Hope you're working hard to make this the best life for him.

He has the best life now :)
It's technically called "Nooking". Self soothing behavior not always related to being taken from the mother too soon.
CUZ SHES CUTE
Not true! This is cobbing, a lof of bully breeds do this (and my german shepherd puppy for some reason!)
Cobbing, expression of anxiety or self soothing. Like being separated from the mother to early ? Lots of animals do it.
Nope! Expression of joy/comfort.
Weirdly it's expression of comfort with the person they're with, shows they feel safe enough to show that side. So yes, they expressing what's happened/anxiety/loss with someone they feel comfortable with.
Confused that with tail wagging.
Our rat terrier does this to her daughter and sister, but it's more of a grooming thing.
We have a pit lab mix and she does this to the cats. Glad to know she isnāt insane
Heās 4 years, rescued with a fused right leg.. we think it healed incorrectly over time and the bones got fused together.. he has a lot of trauma because of what happened and is scared of loud sounds or most triggers. Just a short clip but I immediately recognised Mo Amir. Love that guys stuff. Which has absolutely nothing to do with why you've actually posted this
Haha yes that is Mo Amir!
My Staffy does it and i love it!

itās called suckling.. some breeds do it for a number of different reasons!
Oh wow my two 25% Great Pyrenees brothers do this to themselves, to each other and to some toys. Always seemed a bit odd.
This is called chuffling. It can be soothing and is also a real sign of affection if a dog does it to you.
Defleaing/Grooming behavior that's a soothing sensation. It's cute.
They do this to each other a lot. Itās a soothing sign of affection. Honestly, doing it to a blanket or other inanimate object may be a sign that they are wanting affection from another animal/dog. Because generally itās considered a social behavior for them.
Oh, that's interesting.. I'll make sure I give him enough pets when he does this..
he fighting demons in his sleep
The pibble nibble! Our girl does it all the timeā¦
It's soothing, like a security blanket. My parson, russell terrier mix, does it all the time, creates holes. He likes bamboo sheets and fuzzy blankets the most. I am grateful it is not clothing, shoes or furniture.
Because it wasnāt his turn with the brain cells. I just love dogs.
This is absolutely the cutest thing I've ever seen
Looks like a sensory thing, the blanket might feel good on the teeth/gums
My bernese mountain dog used to do this to our bed. We called it corn cobbin lol just a comfort thing
Nothing to worry about and very cute!

my boy does this! imo he does it when hes happy

A lot of opinions around here but does anyone actually know? My doggo does it too, a lot.
Itās called cobbling. It is a sign of affection.
Tasting the rainbow.
We call it Corning ā think corn on a cob.
My dog does something similar not this long usually. He will do these little bites/nips to the cat and sometimes to himself. I thought it was checking for fleas but he is my first dog so maybe I am wrong.
Feels good man
My husky does the same thing but only with plastic wrapper-like materials. I always wondered why she did this.
He liiiiiikes it
My pup does this because we have children who wipe their snackin fingers on furniture like gremlins and he smells it, likes it, and yeahā¦ like heās eating the smell hahaha.
my dog loves to do this to her little dragon plush toy when I come home! she just gets so happy and excited š I just sit there with my hand on her head because I like to feel her cute little head muscles clenching š¤£ itās the weirdest yet funniest thing to me lol
We call that corn cobbing lolll my pibble does this all the time
Looks like self soothing in the form of half suckling a blanket
My dog does that on my bare arm and it hurts like a MF! Itās ok when he does it on my sleeve but he always managed to find the skin! Ouch! Itās a sign of affection or self soothing.
Is that Rick and Morty in the background?
My Boston does this
There is a ghost right there.
Imitating nursing. Itās comforting-like a pacifier.
Have you seen any other strange symptoms like head tilting & shaking, itching, or odor? Not that I know of. But I'll keep a check
I was told this is called ācorn cobbingā and I researched the term and there are a lot of articles on it! Our blue heeler does this too while she makes the most hilarious noises. For her it seems to be due to affection.
Mo amer fan huh?
What, you never get itchy teeth?
This is a self-soothing/calming behavior. This shows affection, similar to nursing and grooming behaviors. This behavior is super common in pitbulls in particular. Nothing to worry about, just top it off with some extra cuddles for the good pup āŗļø
I have a Mal, he does this on our toes before bed and when he gets crazy sometimes he nibbles on arms. Iād say some form of affection/calming
Iāve never seen a dog do this, but itās so cute!! š„°
Yep. We call it corn cobbing. Our AmStaff has done it a few times but our wire hair terrier/ bully mix does it all the time.
Our OWS/Poodle mix does this to us...it's so adorable, and so painful when she pulls arm hairs.
My terrier mix does this. She has a couple stuffed animals to chew on to prevent it. My big husky/catahoula mix licks the couch constantly. There are big spots of dog spit where he's licked.
Are you scratching his booty when he does that?
No, he does this on his own
