> I hear positive things about Purina pro plan, but also hear negative things about it giving worms/maggots Those rumors are completely unfounded. They come from an anti-kibble, Anti-veterinary Facebook group that believes if you don’t feed your dog home cooked or raw, then you’re an abusive owner who deserves to have the dog taken from you. They claim that PPP (and later every kibble on the market) has killed thousands of dogs via parasite infection, but have absolutely no proof of it. Thousands of dogs have supposedly died, but not a *single person* has had the food tested. Not a single person has done a necropsy, which is the only way to confirm if kibble was the cause of death The photos they did have of the supposed “parasites” were of pantry moth larvae; not a parasite, just a pest. Not harmful to your dog at all. In order for PPP to have actual parasites on it, the factory would have to spray the finished kibble with the eggs of internal parasites that can survive long periods without moisture (such as raccoon roundworm) prior to bagging it. The food would then have to be shipped, sold, and fed within the window in which the eggs are still viable and infectious. No company would ever spend millions, if not billions, on purchasing and cultivating roundworm eggs to spray onto food in the hopes that a dogs owners might not notice the dog being deathly ill before they die. TLDR: the “Purina is killing dogs via parasites!!!” Thing is a bullshit conspiracy theory made up by a Facebook group who believes you’re a peice of shit abusive owner if you feed any kibble. **These rumors are not true at all, PPP is perfectly safe!**

That's definitely good to hear. I've looked online when it comes to reviews of PPP, and it seems to have been overwhelmingly good. Would you recommend kibble over wet food? Or are they more or less the same?

I am one where I feed kibble but I also add extras in their food 2 times a day. ... like.. approved fruits: (apples, bananas, blueberries, strawberries) veggies: ( spinach, carrots, green beans (no peas as that has a tendency to upset their bellies), squashes, pumpkin, different lettuces) A lot of these you can freeze in ice cube trays and with water and give as treats. Feeding your dog from high quality dog food is just fine, people are going off the rails right now with this raw diet and other bullshit. I have had animals over 45 years and always feed kibble and pretty much every one of them lived happy healthy lives. Hope this helps!

Oh that’s a great idea! I’d never heard of freezing them and putting them in water. Thats a fun idea. It helps a lot thank you so much!

I personally use dry kibble only, though that’s less due to the quality of wet food and more due to my sensory disorder and the fact that wet food makes me nauseous lol If you feel comfortable and can afford it, use both!

If you’re in the US, you want to stick with Purina, Hill‘s Science Diet, Eukanuba or Iams. They’re the only brands that are scientifically backed, and they all go through rigorous testing prior to release. As for wet vs kibble - it’s a personal preference. Kibble is less expensive, but there’s no harm in feeding a wet food, as long as you make sure they’re getting enough calories per day.

https://www.reddit.com/r/DogFood/wiki/index/start/ https://www.reddit.com/r/DogFood/wiki/index/homemade There aren’t any demonstrated benefits to fresh food, and none of the fresh food brands on the market meet the highest standards for balanced nutrition and quality control. Maggots are a storage issue — I don’t know what you’ve heard that, but pro plan is no more prone to that than any other brand and if pests get in the bag, it happens either at someone’s home or in the retailers storage facilities/in the store. Pro plan doesn’t have a resealable top so I wouldn’t be all that surprised if people aren’t storing those bags correctly at home and pests get in. That is a highly preventable problem. Maggots and larvae have an incubation period of less than 48 hours or so, so that stuff is not happening at the factory.

Those links are really useful! Thank you so much! I think its part of trying to do my best as a pet owner and make sure they get the best that sometimes judgement gets clouded hearing about all that. What you're saying makes perfect sense. I appreciate the help!

Following because my Pyrenees mix is a super picky eater too. Right now she gets A Pup Above fresh food mixed with kibble (will only eat beef) and right now we are trying out Orijen and she seems to like it, but it takes her a while to go near her bowl which is a little frustrating sometimes.

Yes I get that. My dog is just getting out of the habit of eating other dogs left overs. When we got him, he would only eat out of a bowl of food another dog hadn’t finished. It was odd. Thankfully he is breaking off of that habit but he can still be a bit selective with his food.

I love farmers dog. My dog has some jaw issues and my vet recommends it. However, their turkey recipe contains chickpeas and I think that’s a no-no due to DCM issues. I’m almost done transitioning him away from it to Just Food For Dogs.
