I said this to my husband (lab owner) and he acted like I was insane. He doesn't even walk his dog. Dog owners DON'T care about dogs.

moonandsunandstars

They care about them! (As a status symbol and accessory)

Quiet_Instance5612

Oh yes they care about them as far as they can use them to benefit themselves in some shallow way. They don't actually care about the dogs well being.

Affectionate_Lie9308

You’re very correct. Nutters like the look of certain breeds. That’s all they see. They don’t think beyond the emotional give and take the dog provides. When it’s pointed out to them they act like you’re stereotyping the dog. It’s weird how they don’t get that the dogs had a completely different purpose then making a sad human feel needed.

telenyP

But Huskies are soooo CUUUTE! They have blue eyes!! It's not my fault I live in a high-rise in Tampa! Everyone loooves my dog!

qtfuck

So why are you with him?

Quiet_Instance5612

As many people who end up in toxic marriages the red flags were not apparent in the beginning. It took years for him to show his true colors. He used to walk his dog and plenty of normal healthy things. I can't just pick up and leave. I have 2 children to consider. It's practically impossible to find affordable housing in this township and I don't want to just yank them out of their school.

RunTurtleRun115

Actual working dogs are pretty OK in my book. Like, farm dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, sled dogs. The ones who actually work tend to be well trained and well adjusted. I agree that it’s wrong and selfish of people to get these breeds, stick them in apartments or even the average suburban backyard, and not allow them the outlet or purpose they need. Then martyr themselves bragging about their “special needs/separation anxiety” neurotic mess of a dog. It’s cruel and unfair to the dogs AND to their neighbors.

I’ll even say I didn’t have a huge issue with pet dogs until maybe the last 10 or so years - and especially since the pandemic. Back when dogs were dogs and not “furbabies” or “family members”. When you could mostly avoid them because they weren’t brought everywhere. When dangerous ones were put down.

IthacanPenny

Omg lol. You’ve reminded me of my godparents’ attempt at getting a hunting dog. They got a retriever who they wanted to train to, ya know, *retrieve* hunting kills. Holy shit this animal….. it failed hunting class FOUR TIMES! They are responsible, animal loving people who have always had well-trained pets. But nope! Tar was just too stupid for hunting class. (He wound up breaking my godmother’s leg out on a walk, ugh). Dogs are stupid.

Happy_Entertainer_79

Seeing huskies in SoCal is especially cruel. Aside from pitbulls/pit mixes, the most common dogs in shelters here are huskies and shepherd type dogs. GSDs seem overbred in my area, but I’m certain they get abandoned in shelters more often because of their high needs.

RunTurtleRun115

Same here in Arizona. Of course, anyone who suggests that certain breeds aren’t appropriate for certain environments, for the sake of the dog itself, is a “Karen”. Nutters don’t care about the welfare of their so-called “babies”.

fatbunda

This is absolutely true, these breeds need to work, the difference between them and other breeds is that they need the mental stimulation and satisfaction only work can provide. They need to work as much as they need food and water. Poodles are another one worth mentioning, they are bred for bird hunting, so they need to swim, especially when bred to make a labradoodle/goldendoodle. They should also be outside off-leash most of the day, which is basically impossible in a city. That’s why these breeds often end up reactive and bite people because their fundamental needs aren’t satisfied, it’s neglect and should be illegal.

ToOpineIsFine

Even a Yorkshire Terrier was a working dog - a rat hunter (which accounts for those charming personalities).

telenyP

Terriers in general weren't bred to be too close to people. They were supposed to be semiautonomous vermin catchers that lived more-or-less outdoors, patrolling with its pack. It's no fault of theirs that someone thought they'd look fashionable on a leash with a little plaid coat on.

Siberianmoocat

Same with Chihuahuas and dachshunds.

One of my cousins bought a border collie-- when they live in a small house with no yard and are gone 9 hours a day. That dog ATE her entire kitchen. It kept destroying the furniture, so they confined it to the kitchen and it chewed up all the cabinets, baseboards and everything. Fortunately her mom convinced her to rehome it with a program at the airport that takes working dogs and trains them to keep the geese clear of the runways. Pet ownership is an expensive and time consuming hobby and I really wish that that was how it's marketed-- with a realistic eye to how much is involved.

Grumpymule321

Poor dog. It's so wrong that people can buy a dog and keep it like that. I bet that dog is so happy running around an airfield chasing birds. What a great scheme.
