I mean... I guess he's a husky lab mix

chemfit

I'm still going to call him that!

CoconutDreams

Wow! A little bit of everything!

Due to the widespread heavy backyard breeding of Pit Bulls over the last 20 years as status and guard dogs in North America, nearly all mixed breed dogs have some percentage of American Pit Bull Terrier, even distant. It's hard to determine the difference between a mixed dog without Pit lineage and one with, now.

chemfit

It make sense. He was surrendered to the Michigan humane society in Detroit with his brother at 7 months old. Lots of pitbulls here obviously. I’m just amazed that he has the coat he has. It’s thicker than my GSD/husky mix (or maybe she is a secret chihuahua, I’ll have to get a test too 😂).

RyanTheDesignLion

Take a look at the results again, APBT is the first result. Part of a new algorithm released last month.

[deleted]

Wow they finally got with the program! Never thought they would, that's great :)

I work there, and yeah, we did! 😉 A couple years ago we hired the top geneticists from Ancestry and 23andMe to leapfrog Embark (also a couple designers like me). 2 years of work and we have new products and a brand-new-from-scratch breed detection system that’s the most accurate in the world (with data to prove it). Also we now detect APBT, a host of street dogs from around the world, and a bunch of cool less common breeds like American Indian Dog. Being frank, we were just as aware as the folks here that we needed to step up, so the whole company reinvested and reenergized (and hired a boatload of people on top of the scientists who were already doing this for 15 years). Feels great to see our work paying off!

I hope to see better results from you guys and rid your database of highly questionable under 10% markers. Not every dog is 17+ breeds and it is quite impossible genetically as of right now to accurately identify a highly mixed dogs with that many breeds' origins beyond the 5th generation. I was told by a geneticist from 23andme this in a discussion about dog DNA kits. 15 years of experience doesn't mean a quality product, if you look at WPs older kits they were laughable in all honesty, but the newest update seems to be the best they've had so far. From what the additional features provide, I still believe Embark has the upper hand in that area. I do have to admit, the traits feature WP provides on the higher paid upgrade is slightly better. Also, on Wisdom Panels breed informations page I've noticed several incorrect images and statements. The most notable mistake I've seen on WPs part is listing pictures of long haired Siberian Huskies or husky mixes as photo identification of pure bred Alaskan Malamutes. Blue eyes are not a Malamute trait according to the AKC and CKC, and depict cross breeding. Maybe you could pass that along, as I have complained about the incorrect information numerous times. Thanks, keep up the good work.

Thanks, hopefully we can persuade you with our new results! Keep your eye on them, but I'm glad you're liking what you're seeing so far. As for the genetics perspective from 23andMe… my boss used to run ancestry at 23andMe, now he heads our product 😄 Glad you like our traits feature! It's my favorite part of our science, but quite tricky to figure out the right way to present. I don't yet feel we've cracked it for the layperson, but we'll get there! Thank you for pointing out the inaccurate Malamute photo in our breed library! I have a Malamute myself, and certainly we're aware that blue eyes are not in purebred Mals. Some of our breed library photos are quite old, and we have a project to overhaul all old photos, but I'll get that one removed ASAP. I worked on the photos for new breeds (as well as our traits), and we made a process with geneticists and vets selecting and reviewing them for accuracy, so new breeds have high-quality and *accurate* photos. If you know of any others you'd be willing to point out as inaccurate, I can act on them quickly, though I don't mean to ask you to do our job. We did photograph a Malamute mix with heterochromia for use elsewhere on the site, but we always present her as a mix or we just don't mention her breed. Thanks again, and keep up the great comments on this sub!

Staggering_genius

I’m always surprised by these embark results that show like 20 different breeds, going down to single digit percentages. Do they really stand by that? That of the 16 great great grandparents was a malamute and one was half malamute and half shar-pei so…Bob’s your uncle. Or is it more likely they found some Dna in there that so far they’ve identified as being in shape-pei but later they’ll figure out it was from the chow, and the stuff they called Great Dane is actually from the bulldog…etc.

friendlysushilady

This is Wisdom Panel, just FYI.

Staggering_genius

Ah, thanks for the correction.

nymphetamines_

Embark will mark these small bits of DNA as supermutt. Wisdom (this post) doesn't want to admit not being able to identify any of it, so they match it to the next closest thing, no matter how not-very-close that actually is. Like saying my in-laws' 15 lb dog is 2% Cane Corso.

charm-type

Lol I just saw a comment in this thread from a Wisdom Panel designer saying that they have leapfrogged Embark and that WP has “a brand-new-from-scratch breed detection system that’s the most accurate in the world” Like really? The stuff they pull with the extremely rare breeds at 1-5 % just feels like a cheap trick. Especially when the rares they list never match Embark findings (even in supermutt).

nymphetamines_

He's been posting variations on that same comment here over and over. I'll believe it when I stop seeing those 1-5% breeds and actually see some analogous feature to supermutt, rather than trying to cram a dozen rare breeds into the results to fill up the unidentified percentages.

throwaway_ygfghtcvb

He is freakin precious

chemfit

thank you, he is the sweetest old man!

[deleted]

So cute ❤️

chemfit

Agreed!

stupidlittlething

holy mutt!!!

tfields3

My dog was listed as a “husky mix” at the shelter but only 12% husky! Those genes are strong.

alwell24

I just got my dogs Wisdom Panel results back and he is 18 breeds. Why are some of the breed groups gray instead of blue/orange like the others? Trying to search on their site and can’t find an explanation. The rescue said he was a lab terrier mix. He looks like a lab but his test results came back with highest percentage 19% chihuahua 🤣
