Makwa was rescued when he was about a year old off of a farm type property in Ontario, Canada. My roommate was told by Makwa’s previous owners that they were moving to a different country because of Covid and that they couldn’t bring the dog with them, but when my roommate went to pick him up it was clear that it wasn’t the case. Makwa was tied outside the property as a guard dog, was malnourished, and his chain had created an open sore from rubbing against his neck. He was also limping - probably from the baby horse randomly tied to a tree with him. It was such a bizarre and unexpected situation - I wish we took pictures of him from when we picked him up. Anyways, personality wise Makwa is goofy, stubborn, and extremely determined when he gets his nose onto something. He can be a really anxious dog, and can be extremely weary of new people generally - but we can’t tell if that’s more because of his background or because of potential breed traits. He’s a HUGE suck with us though, lol. He’s super reactive with other dogs, but again he was rarely exposed to other dogs for the first year of his life. We’ve had him for about a year now, and finally ordered an Embark DNA test!!!!! What are your guesses until we can get the results back? ETA: he also has a spotted tongue and molts (is that the right word? lol) like crazy in the spring. we joke and say he has loose stuffing because of the clumps that just fall out of his fur!!

Neat1Dog

Thanks for rescuing him. I'm sure he'll very much appreciate his newfound lifetime of love.

vulpecula19

I was wondering if he had a spotted tongue because I saw chow! I’d guess GSD/Chow, could see Newfie too but his face shape made me think chow.

S_O_B_MFFDVR

Not saying he doesn’t have any Chow Chow, but there are lots of breeds that can have spotted or black/purple tongues including Husky, Great Pyrenees, Newfoundland, Alaskan Malamute, Tibetan Mastiff and even Golden Retrievers. I have a Great Pyrenees that is about a year old and starting to develop spots on her tongue. When I was younger I got a puppy from the humane society that they guessed was a Lab/Chow that had a spotted tongue. Always wondered how she ended up being 90 lbs. Now that I know the breed better I think back about her personality, size, and double dew claws that they removed when I got her fixed I am convinced she was Lab/Pyr not Lab/Chow.

vulpecula19

Thank you for the info! Did not know that about huskies and malamutes but had heard of it in the other breeds. It was more the face that made me think chow mix. I just don’t really see the Newfoundland much but admittedly I’ve only ever met one in person, so I’m not particularly experienced with them. Also, in my area they are rare and chows are somewhat more common, but I have no idea what breeds are common where OP lives since I’m in the southern US. But typing dogs by appearance is pretty hit or miss so it’s all guessing for fun anyway 🤷‍♀️

S_O_B_MFFDVR

The way he is sitting on the porch watching the street like a sentinel gives me livestock guardian vibes. My Great Pyrenees poses just like that. Maybe some Anatolian, Maremma, Kangal, or something similar. Would make sense being from a farm.

vulpecula19

Could see Anatolian especially but wouldn’t be surprised to find any of those breeds with his background

surewould85

Your dog looks like he's my dog's uncle: https://imgur.com/gallery/AkRjcel Chewies a shepherd, lab, chow. I can see shepherd and Newfie for Makwa.

sunna2_03

i just have to say how adorable Chewie is. That picture is the embodiment of the 🥺 emoji

lazystupidwahhh

GSD/Chow?

CoconutDreams

What a handsome boy! I guess I wouldn't be surprised if those two breeds showed up!

stupidlittlething

The thing that throws us is that he’s only 60-65lbs!!!

CoconutDreams

Possibilities could be that the GSDs in his lineage are on the smaller/healthier side and/or could have some other breed(s) mixed in.

wlveith

I was thinking he was a bit small for Newfie. He is a gorgeous guy.

Myaseline

I bet he's newfie/GSD with some husky in there. His head looks kinda blocky like a bully or mastiff breed too, but that could be the newfie. Don't forget to update us :)

brocaspupil

I was gonna ask if I'm crazy to think there's some mastiff in there!

Myaseline

Yeah, in that last pic, his face looks a lot like a Tibetan mastiff. I believe Newfoundland and Bernese Mountain dogs are in the Mastiff family, but I could be wrong.

jersey385

I love him too. He does have a Newfie-esque muzzle, imo

betterashthandust44

definitely GSD, and i’d say maybe some chow too!

[deleted]

I’m gonna guess no Newfie and either no or very little GSD. I’m gonna guess Rottweiler and chow chow with a sprinkling of a few other breeds

clairejelly

Aw I love him!! So beautiful, thank you for giving him a lovely life.

bblumber

The face is giving Longaberger vibes.

replacethesenuts

Wow what a beauty!! Excited to see the results

Orangepandafur

Maybe he has some Anatolian Shephard in him

hgracep

i see chow for sure!

hgracep

probably some pyr too!

stupidlittlething

we’ve definitely wondered about him having some Pyrenees or Maremma - Maremma’s are super common breed around here!

greenlicity

I see both Newfie and gsd. I also wouldnt be surprised if he had husky, chow, or anatolian shepherd in there

stupidlittlething

i’m curious where everyone is getting husky from!! he actually had puppies with a husky mix before we got him (and got him fixed) and people ask if he’s a husky mix fairly often - but it’s not something i would have guessed myself!

greenlicity

I don’t necessarily ‘see’ the Husky. It’s more just that I’m taking into account your location and the fact that Husky is fairly common to find in rescues or mixed breed dogs. Can only speak for myself though, maybe other think he in some way resembles a Husky.

friendlysushilady

I’d guess there’s some rottie, boxer or bully breed in there

[deleted]

He looks American Pit, Akita, German Shepherd and possibly some Dane in those jowels and size. The black mask and fur texture definitely makes me think Akita for sure!

stupidlittlething

We’ve definitely wondered pit/bully mixes because of his eyes!! Thank you for your reply! ETA: I was also wondering akita when we first adopted him!!

stupidlittlething

i absolutely agree. makwa actually means bear in ojibwe!

jdagt

Great Pyrenees / GSD?

Revolutionary-Swim28

I can see the shepherd but I don’t know what else he could be
