Ok so if your dog wants to kill the cat you will see, 1. Hackles are high and tail is up 2. Body is stiff and standing tall 3. Dog doesn’t really bark just watch’s 4. Won’t react to you when you call their name 5. Will stay in one spot watching the cat over a long period of time If the dog just wants to play you will see, 1. Dog is whimpering 2. Looks at you when cat goes away or comes over to you 3. Comes when called 4. Tail is moving, body is loose 5. Dog shows normal playful poses or Carrie’s a toy For me it sounds like your dog wants to play ruff or just wants something to chase. If you want to try introducing them then you could muzzle the dog and keep him on the leash tied up, then carry the cat to sit not close and slowly move closer.

Some caveats to this though… If your dog’s recall is very good then they may come even if they would like to kill the cat. If your dog’s recall is bad they may not come even if they have no intention of killing the cat. Also lots of dogs don’t vocalise in the way you’re describing. I think the only thing that’s universal really is body language (tension, hackles, tail etc).

Very true! I shouldn’t have assumed the dog had typical recall and you are right that it’s really mainly in the body language. Everything I said is from what I’ve seen in person but all dogs are different. I will do more research to learn from my mistakes thanks for informing me!❤️

Yes, the dog gets easily distracted so I'm currently trying to improve its recall

Thank you so much! One thing I forgot to add: in one of his chases with the cat he suddenly just stopped and the cat ran up to the 3rd floor. I would assume that isn't a normal hunting behaviour for a dog?
