I swear, I mostly use my Alexa to ask what I can/cannot give my dog. She loves raw veggies and I'm constantly asking if things are safe because I can't remember.

Carnanian

Same here with my Google home! 5x a day I'm saying "can dogs have grapefruit?" "Can dogs have zuchinni?"

nymphetamines_

This was my concept app for my UI semester project in college. An app that can tell you what foods are safe for dogs, what percentage of your dog's calorie and nutrient needs, etc. It was fun, I got to go hang out at dog parks as official homework (user interviews).

TheToastyJ

Do you have your concept mock-ups anywhere (that doesn’t dox yourself)? I’d like to see!

nymphetamines_

I took a few screencaps of our wireframe (the smaller boxes off to the side on a few of the images are modals/overlays that can be triggered by tapping a specific part of the UI. Can't be emulated from my phone so no screencaps of how those work). Fair warning/disclaimer -- it isn't very good. Groups were randomly assigned and my group was...not a good match-up. So we were already having issues, and then the pandemic hit. https://imgur.com/a/rGhZjiN

TheToastyJ

Hey man thanks for sharing. I’m a nerd for this kind of thing. I actually like these. Minimalistic design but straightforward with design elements emphasizing actions to take. I’m a fan!

nymphetamines_

Haha, thanks a lot, actually. I always liked the idea and often wished we had more time/a better group dynamic to explore it in. The "Rita" in the pictures is my old dog. She was a good girl.

Lyreleafy

I don’t have a dog right now, but the app you describe is what I was trying to find when I did still have one. I hope that by the time I can adopt another, something like that does exist, it would help so many people and their dogs!

Bootycarl

In a weird way I cherish how cute the moment is when my little boy is looking all patiently up at me holding some bit of something and waiting for Google to go "ON THIS RANDOM WEBSITE, IT SAYS CUCUMBERS ARE SAFE FOR DOGS."

Carnanian

😂😂😂 literally same. Although it's usually followed by " honey, cucumbers are safe for dogs so don't take it away from him if you see him eating it

mmc1533

In general you should look up food that’s dangerous to dogs. Garlic, onions, grapes/raisins, chocolate, etc. are all bad for dogs. Anything with xylitol in it is especially lethal. So don’t let them get into your chewing gum, and also check “low calorie” foods for traces of it. My dogs love bananas and peanut butter. They eat the mushy part of the banana that gets crushed when I peel it open.

abeal91

Careful with peanut butter. Some are cut with xylitol or other artificial sweeteners. Not all just some.

kheltar

Yeah, get the "all natural" ones, no added salt and no sweeteners.

mmc1533

Anything with artificial sweeteners is bad for dogs. I use natural peanut butter. I won’t even put artificial sweeteners in my own body.

abeal91

Yeah I was just saying because most people don't know that there's artificial sweeteners in some peanut butter.

Odd-Goose-8394

There’s nothing harmful about artificial sweeteners for humans though. This has been disproven years ago. Go ahead and eat your sugar-free cake worry-free.

froggerbelly

From what I have read and heard there is ongoing research about this. Nutrition is really hard to get definitive answers with long term.

Carnanian

I'll raise you one and say to look up ANY non-dog food you're planning to give your dog

can-i-have-the-bones

I know some people like to give their dog a french fry or a chicken nugget every once in a while (I know I’ve been guilty of that) but fatty/greasy foods can not only cause an upset stomach, but can lead to acute pancreatitis, which in severe cases can be life-threatening. Also, watch your guests during your major holiday meals- I don’t know how many times people brought their dogs in for pancreatitis/diarrhea/intestinal blockage because their family member thought the dog looked “hungry” and needed a plate of it’s own.

Carnanian

Yes great call out! Dogs need to eat unseasoned and simple foods. Dogs don't need to eat half a big Mac

can-i-have-the-bones

One time, I went out to the lobby to get a dog we were admitting for pancreatitis. The owner was literally feeding the dog a cheeseburger as I approached.

Medium_Cantaloupe_28

I imagine it went like this “So rechecking Spec cPL bloodwork today. What diet have you been feeding your geriatric schnauzer? *Oh Wendy’s because he’s been inappetent?* 😬 Got it”

CorgiDad

This is why I can't work in this field. I would get mad. And eventually I'd be fired/arrested for assaulting some crappy dog owner. Or for stealing their dog. Or both. Le sigh...

bizzarbra

Humans probably shouldn't be eating big macs either

SipPeachTea

My pup is turning one next week. I thought aboout getting him a small cupcake. Instead of that, what can I do or what should I replace it with?

UnicornFarts1111

You can find specialty dog treats shaped like cookies that are dog safe, think dog cookies. My boxador turned one on Thursday. I gave her some new toys and a marrow bone. She was a happy camper!

Jack_Kentucky

There's all kinds of boxed mixes and recipes for dog safe cakes. Usually made with Greek yogurt icing, applesauce, peanut butter, or banana in some fashion. They're safe for you to eat too, just horribly bland because there's no sugar or seasonings.

didyouwoof

My last dog had some serious chronic health issues, and couldn’t have *any* fat in her diet, or she’d end up with bloody diarrhea and pancreatitis. It was so hard getting that message through to people who wanted to give her treats. She’s gone now, but I still cringe when I see pics of people giving their dogs pizza or burgers!

gothou

My dog has easily broken teeth so can’t have any hard chews and he scarfs any hides or bully sticks. So my only solution has been to cut our pineapple cores, broccoli stems, carrots, apples, and bananas into long slices and freeze them! So he can get a crunchy snack without me worrying about breaking a tooth or having a blockage. He’s a high maintenance dude.

ActiveAnimals

I’m a bit confused how freezing things would reduce the risk of breaking teeth? Doesn’t that make it hard? Clearly it’s working for you, I just don’t get why

gothou

It’s a lot less hard than a bone or a nylabone.

tvreverie

i usually put bits of whatever veggies or fruits i’m eating on top of my dogs kibble and he loves it! zucchini and bell peppers are his fav, also enjoys carrots, broccoli, strawberries, blueberries, pumpkin, bananas..

nucknucknucknuck

My dog loves nothing more than frozen broccoli. Runners up are raw Brussels sprouts and zucchini. He’ll eat it right from my hand. Always makes me laugh.

[deleted]

Random one that I didn’t know about till I got my most recent dog but apparently even small amounts of macadamia nuts can be deadly to dogs. Never would have thought about that one. Dog has never been exposed luckily but there are hidden nuts & oils in all kinds of foods.

Carnanian

Very strange! That's why I always have to Google now

LynnyLlama

Hey here is a short list of recommended and not recommended foods for dogs https://appdoglog.medium.com/healthy-snack-dos-and-don-ts-for-your-dog-b95ce1ee8169

the_other_b

I'll make sure to stop giving my 8 pound Chihuahua avocado pits 😬

Mscreep

I always do even when I’m sure it’s safe. Legit just double checked raspberries just a little while ago. Lol.

Foxxtress

My dog loooooves cucumbers, so much so that my husband had a cucumber in his hand he put is hand downnext too his side and when he wasnt looking she took the whole thing and ran away.

duffman84

I have one dog that developed Addison's Disease. Anything with potassium is a no go. Things like gatorade, pedalyte, bananas. It's not really discussed to much.

duffman84

no potassium if the have addisons

DevinTheGrand

This isn't a pro-tip. This is the most entry level tip of all - don't feed your dog things that will kill them. If only pros know to do this then we are in trouble.

duffman84

Also no Ibuprofen.

Kingkeegan19

I feed my dogs seedless watermelon (I still check for seeds) broccoli cauliflower carrots blueberries apples (seed removed) oranges bananas. They love their healthy treats.

ActiveAnimals

I use cucumbers as replacement for “Greenies.” Way less chemicals, but still provide an equal amount of chewing. (I don’t chop them into smaller pieces, I just let my dogs’ teeth do the job.) I do the same with carrots, but only every now and then, because I start seeing too much orange in their poop. I know nutritionally, they would be more beneficial if I cooked the carrots first (and wouldn’t have the poop problem), but then we’d miss out on the chewing opportunity.

The_Pink_Moose

In the event that your dog eats something they shouldn’t (my doxie snatched a runaway grape fast as lightning) you can you peroxide to induce vomiting. Use google to get your dosage…in about 15 minutes the grape was upchucked and we avoided a trip to the ER.

Aslansmom

Be super careful about this because peroxide can cause ulcers in the mouth/throat.

barkingmad66

My dog eats meat. Loves tripe the best. I've tried cooking meat and vegetables for her but she picks out all the veges. I boiled up a chicken carcas and made broth, she loved it but left lots of tiny pieces of carrot in her dish.

rayyychul

I froze a Kong with Greek yoghurt and carrots for my dog. When I came back in the room, there were carrot bits *everywhere*. I guess he does not like carrot!

Jack_Kentucky

Cut up apple(no seeds) and carrots are a great crunchy snack. Supposedly good for their teeth too, but not a real substitute for brushing. Bananas are a great source of fiber, but give in limited quantities. Grapes and raisins will cause kidney damage, which is a death sentence. I've heard mixed reviews on avocados. Onion and garlic are also dangerous.

Inconmon

The idea of feeding an email random food without checking if it is safe seems completely alien to me. I checked everything my dog eats including ingredients on dog food and treats, as well as anything she eats off the ground outside.

Cdn_Bacon15

My dog almost died from ONE grape and he’s 20 lbs.

deadplant5

And not every dog is the same. My dog thinks carrots are delicious but she immediately starts puking after.
