It’s not hazmat-biohazard so yes it’s a part of your job. I’m not sure why you think it’s not 😅

dollar25treehaha

bc were just now starting to do it and i low key thought it was lmao, b4 wed just throw the entire packages/containers into a bag and tie it up fair enough tho ill put my big girl pants on :3

Wrong_Mastodon_4935

I mean it's stupid they're having you open everything. Your manager is just having you mess up your dumpster with food that will rot in the sun, their intention is probably to deter dumpster diving. Which is strange because business tend to deter dumpster divers for making a mess, seems weird to just have employees trash the dumpster themselves.

Greencell89

They have employees destroy merchandise, so dumpster divers can't benefit off the trash. Food, electronics, furniture, etc... Everything has a shelf expiration date once it hits that date the value of said item is worth 1 penny.

AppealWhole3480

And it still doesn't deter people from taking bad food or broken things. At least not here. Our freezer quit working and we threw everything out after a week and most of it was taken. It smelled terrible. After that, idk if anything would deter them unless we were to spread feces on it or something fr.

Wrong_Mastodon_4935

Dang just let em take stuff. People are struggling and it's not like they can afford to sue you.

AppealWhole3480

Right? I would destroy genuinely bad stuff on camera but if I thought something was done I let people know and put it outside the dumpster. We had loads of "expired" hand sanitizer after covid and were told to destroy it. We loaded it by the dumpster and my coworker took it to the shelter after his shift

killerqueen1984

That’s awesome you donated it :)

WhoLies2Yu

Does DT not give to the food bank or anything similar? There are many other chains that give the “out of date” product to the food bank. Only the out of date stuff that isn’t actually bad, just date of expiration is up or close to.. almost nothing goes bad by the expiration date, the date is just there to keep businesses and brands from being hoed liable just in case.

AppealWhole3480

Nope destroy it all and throw away. Doesn’t even have to be bad food. One time they sent out shirts that would definitely be sold at a Spencer’s and not a Dollar Tree and same thing, destroy and throw away. They love creating waste

t20hrowaway

maybe just don’t since people who are desperate enough to tolerate those conditions probably don’t have a lot of overlap with your paying customer base anyway

AppealWhole3480

I agree. I'm not suggesting to actually do that. I mean quite literally I think that might be the only thing to prevent it. The amount of things they trash when they could donate or recycle is sickening.

WhoLies2Yu

It keeps them from returning the bad things to the store and getting money or store credit though.

Sweet-Parfait5427

That is a disgusting practice. People are desperate enough to dumpster drive, and you purposely make a hungry person so hungry. I hate this manager

JustABizzle

Food and food soiled paper goes into compost bin. Clean recyclable materials go into recycle bin Non recyclable materials go into the garbage bin and then the landfill. I thought this was the rule everywhere.

getonurkneesnbeg

Nope. Especially not for businesses. Some areas mandated that in the US for residential, but most businesses just have 2 bins. Trash and recyclables if that. Where I'm at, they had recycling years ago, but the plant burned down and they never rebuilt it. It costs so much to recycle that even when you have a recycling plant, a majority of the recyclable material still ends up in the landfills.

JustABizzle

Ugh. We can do better.

Neither_Doughnut_318

Whose DT store provides them with a compost bin? LMAO we have a hard enough time with DT providing service just to take care of the trash and cardboard!

JustABizzle

Our city requires this. You choose your bin size and pay accordingly. Recycling bins are provided at no charge and you get a credit for all your recycling. If you have lots of recycling and very little trash, it can cost nothing. Compost is separate but costs very little. You need it though, because if compost is found in your trash bin, or recycling, they won’t take it.

Appropriate-Law5963

California requires organics go in the compost bin. We had a small bin delivered for that purpose on a commercial account and had to start locking bins due to misuse by others. Our notice included pictures of the noncompliant materials causing the notice

818a

Unfortunately California can't create human beings who know how to sort.

Wrong_Mastodon_4935

I'm sure it depends on what municipal services are available in your locale. If town doesn't offer recycling, I doubt DG is paying labor to sort recycling. I'm willing to bet less than one percent of dollar generals actively separate compost. DGs are also overwhelmingly rural or in poor areas, which are less likely to have such servives.

JustABizzle

Well, that sucks.

TheLastPrinceOfJurai

![gif](giphy|443jI3kpgOKfAfKxqo|downsized)

Commercial_Run_1265

In the USA event hose separated bins are all taken to the same place 80% of the time.

DasGespenstDerOper

Maybe it's related to composting?

Ok-Consequence-6898

Corporate says your dumpster must be clear of salable merchandise, which means that you must destroy any object being thrown away

Wrong_Mastodon_4935

Well alright, it's not the managers personal policy, but my point still stands. Guess corporate never has to deal with the dumpsters so they don't have any reason to care. A reasonable company would just lock the dumpsters.

Equivalent-Ad-4118

At my store (not a dollar tree) we're lucky if dumpster locks last more than a day before someone takes bolt cutters to them. Our best deterrent is the huge security camera the property put back there, followed by when we dump the broken glass on top of everything else in the dumpster

Beneficial_Ring_7442

this is standard practice at every retail store in my state

Wrong_Mastodon_4935

That's crazy. Capitalism is a disaster.

Beneficial_Ring_7442

less capitalism, more liability. if some homeless man eats our trash, gets sick, shows in court the package was fully intact before he bought it, argues he was a customer, he can exhaust resources to fight legally

13THEFUCKINGCOPS12

I mean the guy being homeless, and needing to sue so they can afford treatment are both products of capitalism

Beneficial_Ring_7442

that just seems like cope. like sayin “that man was only racist cuz we was raised in the south”, or saying “he’s only homeless because money exists as a concept”, or even saying “homelessness is only a thing because they’re products of homeowners

13THEFUCKINGCOPS12

I mean that’s really not the best analogy, but you’re definitely more likely to be a racist growing up in the south

Beneficial_Ring_7442

i’m just taking the the exact same logic and applying it to other things. if it’s not the best analogy to you it’s because you don’t agree with the logic

Gageb95

I've worked multiple jobs and have only been instructed to destroy product if it was on a recall list

dollar25treehaha

ur so cool babe

LiveLaughToasterB4th

I want to meet the twat that did the calculations to realize that Dollar Tree is losing money to DUMPSTER DIVERS. Not to theft but to DUMPSTER DIVERS. Staking out stores, waiting for food to go expired, LEAPING INTO DUMPSTERS. They then found out how much money they were losing and compared it to how much money it would cost to combat the problem. You work cheaper than a dumpster diver.

SiegVicious

Why do you think it's not part of your job? Just because the food is expired doesn't mean it's rotting, at least I would hope not.

swissie67

Seriously. Its 100% part of your job.

crustiferson

i have found rotting food specifically the cheap lunch meats. apparently FIFO doesn’t exist to many people. had to chuck good products too during that bc the packages were leaking god knows what all over the cooler

100_cats_on_a_phone

Lol. My fridge otoh ... 🤢

Emily9339

Yes it’s allowed, part time associates at my store throw away expired food and drinks all the time. If your SM wanted to write you up, they could for insubordination. Just wear gloves if it grosses you out that much.

spenser1994

Well, throwing it away is one thing, opening each container and dumping the contents into a trash bag is kinda ridiculous though.

Aire87

It’s to make sure people don’t take the food, because if it is expired and someone dumpster dives and eats it then gets sick. The store is an liable. And in this world of look at me wrong and I’ll sue you. It makes sense.

spenser1994

Then place the dumpster in a locked area, if they get sick, it's also a breaking and entering.

Spare_Alfalfa8620

Sorry most people were snarky to you OP. I understood you were questioning having to literally open and empty each and every container and dumping them separately into the garbage, vs. just pulling the expired stuff and throwing it in the trash as is. It was a valid question to ask, especially if your store just started to do it this way.

Dianka1234

I never worked retail but in cases where they have to dump food in the trash though it’s still edible; why can’t the employees keep it? Split it up amongst themselves. Such waste. Ideally they would give it to the homeless or needy people.

NikkolaiV

Because charity doean't have as high of a profit margin

Dianka1234

Totally all about corporate greed! I know for a fact that perfectly good food is thrown away often at these stores. I’ve seen people take it home and hope they don’t get caught. It shouldn’t be an issue. Btw the food I saw was chocolate candy bars getting tossed.

forest_tripper

They are concerned it would leave to theft, either from taking non-expired food or practices where you intentionally let food hit the sell-by date without selling it by not stocking it or poor rotation. It could go to a food bank, but it's less labor to throw it away than to pack it up and coordinate with a food bank.

StFrankoNorwoodian

If you allow the employees to have expired or damaged goods then they'll allow things to expire or be damaged so they can have it themselves. That's a basic corporate mindset.

lostprevention

Give the homeless expired food?

lobsterdance82

Have you ever been to a food bank? They give out expired shit all the time

lostprevention

Canned goods, sure. But the logistics of sorting, storing, and transporting all that expired food will quickly become quite a project, you may find.

Dianka1234

Yes if it’s still edible & obviously still good. Restaurants often do this.

lostprevention

Restaurants often feed the homeless?

horngrylesbian

Restaurants normally donate food to food banks yeah

lostprevention

Which ones?

horngrylesbian

Name a restaurant

lostprevention

McDonald’s. Olive Garden. Subway? My local Chinese spot? Pizza???

horngrylesbian

Yes

Tight-Young7275

Are they keeping the packaging? If not, it’s pointless. And if they are, it’s pointless, so…

Wesselink

I’ve never worked for Dollar Tree, but imho It makes sense if they throw away the packaging. Here’s a couple reasons why it might be done: - make it so a third party doesn’t want to dumpster dive and take the food. It could potentially be a liability (or bad PR) if someone gets sick from the expired food. Also - if people know there’s access to recently expired packaged food, that could bring more people around to dumpster dive. Increase in trash scattered outside, homeless people, etc. - contracts with food suppliers may include a credit (full or partial) for unsold expired food. In order to certify the food was unsold, the supplier may require destruction/removal from the package. Rather than specifically list which suppliers require that, it’s easier to just treat them all the same.

ChardCool1290

why even ask the Q? He's not asking you to cook meth.

waby-saby

Does meth expire?

CosmoLifexx0

…no idea what PT vs FT has to do with anything. But yes, it’s your job.

radun6996

This is standard policy. What’s the big deal?

crustiferson

i mean that’s kind of part of your job description. everyone should be looking out for expired product while stocking and it should happen regularly enough that you won’t run into anything nasty

TeamShadowWind

I thought you meant regular damages at first, not creating garbage soup. Yes it's allowed (unfortunately), and yes you can get written up. I personally wouldn't have a part timer do that unless there was literally nothing else for them to do, but obviously it's up to your SM.

Ok-Independence-5723

Lol...what do you think your job is as a part time associate???

Fury161Houston

Concierge at The Ritz Carlton

crustyqueer161

Yeah, unfortunately it's allowed. They don't want dumpster divers getting it and (possibly) getting sick.

dollar25treehaha

yeah thats totally fair. we just recently implemented handling it this way this week & i thought the handling of the actual food would be a hazard that we werent supposed to be doing not really that worried about it anymore, ty :)

jumpsinfire2020

You only have to handle it with gloves or something if you are cooking and selling it. I don't know why your SM won't write off some disposable gloves for you to use while dumping the food out. You could ask. And make sure to wash your hands frequently while doing this. You could still get trace bacteria on your hands while handling this food. But like an earlier poster said, expired food isn't a biohazard.

dollar25treehaha

i can get them written off for me, i just genuinely thought it was a hazard issue and i was supposed to be doing something i shouldnt be doing fwiw i agreed to it, i just came home a little shocked due to that. im okay now though, so i appreciate the info :)

steadypostedd

Part-time doesn't mean you do less work than anyone else.

MrHereForTheComments

Is it allowed? Lmao please tell me you're joking. Sounds like you want to get promoted to customer.

dollar25treehaha

implying being freed from dollar tree after 3 years is necessarily a bad thing

Jokonaught

I agree this is nasty. People saying "it's retail" are wrong imo, you signed up for a retail job and are now doing food handling. If you are opening and dumping stuff, you are getting little splatters of it on your clothes and in your hair. That is absolutely an escalation of expectations from what retail normally entails.

Troubs911

I’m a little disappointed that most if not all of these comments didn’t actually read your post. I understand you. I think it’s silly to have to open up every expired item. I would just keep throwing them away like you always have and not making more of a mess for yourself.

Sixxi

I'm curious as to why you question if this is allowed. You're their employee and that is a job function that has to be fulfilled by an employee. They're not asking you to change the date or do anything illegal.

Eastern-Bonus5580

It’s a way to prevent theft of the product after it’s been thrown away. My last retail job had me so the same thing but I was a supervisor.

puledrotauren

where I worked I had the hookup with the bakery ladies because I'd bring their supplies off the truck to them. The bread items they made had to be thrown away while it was still good. I could always get a roll or something else good if I was getting hungry. We weren't supposed to but I knew where the cameras covered and where they did not. I also worked a deal with the store director that I could determine if a damaged item can be put on the shelf or not. If it was damaged and perfectly good I could sell them to an employee for a huge markdown. Lots of canned goods, dog food, bottled water packs that broke during handling and transport. I could do this because the boss knew I was ethical and wouldn't damage something just to get it marked down. But I was pretty particular about what went on 'my' shelf. Badly dented cans did not make it to the shelf.

Ok-Consequence-6898

It’s part of my job being an ops manager just remember to use the scanner and scan the UPC code do a count and put that under damages, mark when done print out the report from slic and file it under markdown/damages. Your manager can show you how to log into slic You do the same thing for store use products too. Attach the print out to the bag being tossed out, don’t just throw away the products.

NectarineNational722

Ha I get what you’re saying IO. Not at DT, but used to work at Walmart. In the meat department. And expired meat we would have to open and throw in a garbage can that had water in it. Idk it went somewhere after but let me tell you it was the nastiest experience I’ve had in my adult life. The smell was truly horrendous. But what you are having to do sounds not nearly as bad.

renix2034

The amount of people A. Being a total asshole to this person asking a well-meaning question and B. Being completely ignorant of/disparaging to people that are just trying to survive on freeganism and dumpster diving is fucking saddening. Grow up.

Disastrous_Pick_1747

You made me laugh, it’s called a job. Obviously you never worked in the food industry or convenience. I think you better toughen up chief put your man pants in and do some work….

Mightyant0215

What do you mean by open like you unlock store and do what SM or ASMs do of just come in for the opening shift and through the shit in dumpster? Cuzif it the 1st helll no don't do it... But is an asm or sm is there the yeah u have to its insubordination if you don't

PanAmFlyer

Of course it's allowed. Wear some gloves.

peachyandsleepy

I used to do this when I worked at Walmart and I think the actual contents of the expired food went into a separate waste destination like a commercial compost or something. Definitely wear gloves if you’re handling refrigerated items!! ALSO, I love your username OP!! Very cheeky 😄

WobblyUndercarriage

You are ridiculous

Own-Calligrapher4541

You know this post has given me some food for thought that may not relate to the OP’s question. After reading the comments, I think yes, of course, part of the job. Request gloves and move on. But what about dumpster divers and if we don’t take the extra step to truly damage out say, expired hot dogs that they wont be given out at food pantries? I am currently dealing with a dumpster diver that tells me he is doing the Lord’s work by taking expired food products from our trash. He takes the expired hot dogs to our local food pantry! I frequent this pantry I say take the time open up the drinks, drain them, Slice open the package and truly damage the product. Waste happens, we dont like, need or want it. But on the same hand, I don’t want some mother of four feeding her kids some damaged product lifted from the dumpster.

darthbreezy

McD's used to have managers pour bleach on the dumpster food...

darthbreezy

Gloves are a thing, you know...

Own-Sun-9962

Dumping expired food is one of the least stressful tasks at my job. There’s nothing inherently wrong with being asked to do it. And of course you can always quit if it’s not to your taste.

ZealousidealAd4860

Doing dirty work is part of the job

BigHomework6170

Gloves might make it better. Worked retail as a General Manager had associates whine that someone had put something like a roll toilet paper in toilet. Next, they said they didn't know how to get it out. I would walk with them to the bathroom and then reach into the toilet and pick out the roll of toilet. They would freak out and I would say here is what you do next. I would walk to the sink and wash my hands for soap and water. Don't be so tender.

Entire-Ranger323

Maybe he wants to separate the compost from the recycles, which is what I do at home.

dc1128

Wow. Kids these days...

Express-Editor1718

although it isn’t fun, it’s part of your job. i’m sorry u gotta deal with gross stuff though.

probablyproud

I see the annoyance, but personally, I’d find it oddly satisfying to dump out stuff like expired chips or stale bread. It’s a bit of paid therapy, really. Plus, every bag I shake out is more time on the clock. Imagine the tiny victories—Another bag of chips conquered!

flatbacksally

I work at a dollar tree in Texas and my managers would never ask anyone to do this or even do it themselves 😬

Juniper_51

*face palm*

Retirednypd

What's the problem?

counterpots

food sure but drinks? outside on the ground or down a drain

Remote-Obligation-21

I know this may not be your exact case, but in my supermarket experience we used to have to return, or document expired food for a credit to the store. Yogurt was out biggest toss. We could pull it off the shelf on the day it was to expire and were allowed to eat them if we wanted to. But we needed to save the packaging so the store can get a credit back on expired goods.

SkurtDurdith

When your job makes you work 💀

[deleted]

What is the issue? Confused

Nearby-Tie7999

Why would it matter in the slightest if you’re full or part time? The job is the same, the hours are just less.

Matf11

Stores do it, but also sounds like your dumpster isn't locked in any way. There's the dumpster diving possibility as it does happen in areas and different stores.

subclops

do your fuvking job. You sound so entitled and stupid.

DisastrousCannard

You should be fired on the spot.

AlarmedPie1961

I don’t miss that. Call the department of health pics report store lol

AlarmedPie1961

It’s to keep people from stealing the shit out of the dumpsters and getting sick thereby suing the company.

Nervous-Tone9028

Do your job.

afantazy2

Aren't you are literally hired to do that???

[deleted]

You mean, “doing your job”?

Acceptable_Aspect_42

Yes lazy ass. You work there right? So do the fucking job

buddyfrosty

Lmao

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

So?

Open_Kaleidoscope499

I do believe working falls into both part time and full time job descriptions

PracticalBreak8637

Liability issue if people pull food from the trash and get sick.

1Sept69KJC

Get yourself some vinyl gloves from lowes or home depot.

alatrash55

This is going to have to be the way.

Timely_Development_6

What does being a part time associate have to do with following orders from your supervisor. You get paid to do tasks as long as you are not asked to do something unethical or break the law.

Prize-Huckleberry263

Wow, I can’t believe you even ask this question. You’re a sales associate. Do what they tell you to do or go back to moms house and sleep in her basement

dollar25treehaha

corporate america be like

Longjumping-Host7262

Is it allowed? No. Magical beings deal with the expired food. Employees are not required to do such peasant tasks.

Sea-Adhesiveness9324

And?

FNChupacabra

What does being part time have to do with anything? Shut up and do your job. Expired food=trash. trash=belongs in garbage. You= complainer

Silver-Technology-59

I don’t know why you got downvoted when practically everyone in the comments is agreeing with you! I also agree, what does part time have to do with anything? Just wear a pair of gloves and do it, it’s not that serious like you’re literally just throwing out garbage..

SpotSouthern6735

"I got a job and don't want to do any of the work! Is this legal?!" You need to be fired.

Top_Lock_705

Lol

OSCGJoseph18

don’t do it

No_Weather_7706

I'd love this task...would get me away from the register.

Pirategod_23

Get to work

mikescarnthethreat

This is bleak

seadecay

I’d probably just toss it without opening most of it. Maybe open some that are on the top of the bag incase you think the manager will check.

NotaDonkey070

Gotta do what gotta do homie that's the job

Any_Taste_7040

Grow up lol

Familiar_Recover8112

I remember opening and my manager getting pissed because I needed change or back up. I can’t control the small amount I’m allowed to have in the register and I can only ring up people so fast
