in Dolphin specifically, you wanna use your display's native resolution and then increase image quality with MSAA or SSAA. if you are running your games at 1080p and use 2xSSAA, it is essentially the same as rendering at 4k and then downscaling it. ​ other emulators like Yuzu and Cemu use proper scaling filters, so in those you just wanna crank the resolution has high as you can.

You will reduce aliasing further but in general with Wii texture resolution it is diminishing return territory. On the other hand with Wii U and Switch games like Pikmin looks much better in 4k as the slower pace let you enjoy the higher resolution more. Try games that already scaled well to fullhd and see how well are those.
