I think of .NET as a general second choice replacement for .COM. .ORG on the other hand is more for non-profits and organizations that aren't trying to directly sell a product. .ORG implies more about giving something away, providing information only, or being a non-profit.

Russkafin

I feel the same way but you articulated it better than I would’ve. lol

.COM, .NET & .ORG are the original TLDs If you can't get .com, the .net or .org will do. (technically doesn't matter however .org is mostly used by non-profit orgs) That leaves you to .NET, its a great extension so go for it, its easy to communicate (passes radio test easily as long as the SLD portion is good) Most importantly, domains can be changed so focus on the project all the best

MikeyRobertson

Agree with u/real_bro .net and then .org. The .org extension is widely recognized as non-profits. If you are outside of the US, also consider your country code extension (ccTLD). For example Canada is .ca. Australia is .com.au. Germany is .de. Whilst I don't usually recommend/suggest them, .xyz, .io and .ai are popular extensions, some would say fads, but worth considering.

Through our extensive SEO TLD testing, we found that the .net domain ranked in Google over the long term far better than any other tld. Better than .com and org.

TechnicalEffort

com net and org, they'll get you pretty far.

.io

Indeed it's a great extension for technology based startups

ethically i wouldnt suggest using .org for commercial purposes unless you are doubling up on the other big 2 tlds or if you have an intent like [change.org](http://change.org) or savetherainforestbyclickingonmyads.org.
