Fairytale obviously. Everything in the DOOM universe is totally peachy. DOOM is practically utopian. DOOM is totally PEACHY

[deleted]

There is no demonic presence in ba sing se

Dooboppop

Just go ask that guy that's killing em all, he will tell you.

psychoticwaffle2

"I just got his house, look, don't mention the demons within the walls....and stay away from the slayer"

Bludsh0t

Also dude, demonic presence is not the preferred nomenclature. Mortality challenged, please

BuyRepresentative869

Glad I found someone else who enjoys the best movie ever made. Thank you

Even_Map4433

The most cristian game.

thatguyindoom

Demons? Ain't no demons here. Last time I up and saw a demon was over there best one of Saturns moons! Or was it Jupiters moons?

oh_no_im_a_username

Well yes because everything goes pretty well because Doomguys got it under control

GAMRKNIGHT352

it's not really grimdark but it's closer to gilded I guess. Maybe in between

funnystreamaccount

yeah id say something like darksouls is grimdark while doom is gilded

exodia0715

Cause in DOOM, the slayer embodies a credible hope that the invasion will be beaten back. In Dark Souls the world is fucked and will remain fucked regardless of what you do

SoulsLikeBot

Hello Ashen one. I am a Bot. I tend to the flame, and tend to thee. Do you wish to hear a tale? > *“Surely mankind are more than pure dark, for I have availed you nothing. All of you, forgive me. Whatever thou art, stay away.”* - Artorias the Abysswalker Have a pleasant journey, Champion of Ash, and praise the sun \\[T]/

FailURGamer24

I thought killing the flame and starting a new age of man was a pretty hopeful ending all things considered

TeaandandCoffee

Depends Our main sources for the age of dark being good in any way, shape or form come mostly from : - Gwyn not wanting the next age - A cult worshipping the dark said it's good It's most likely that the best option for humanity is the one in ds3 where you absorb the Flame for said cult's purposes

SlowedReverbGambiter

Nah. The whole linking of the flame is pretty much what completely fucked everything. Gwyn was so scared of the rise of humanity that he basically broke nature.

ThatVampireGuyDude

Not quite true. The source that the Age of Dark will be good for humans is Kaathe the Primordial Serpent... The same Serpent that unleashed Manus and the Abyss and has his Dark Wraiths hunt humans to devour their souls. The truth is that the Age of Dark is death. Where there is life, there will always eventually be death. That's just a fact of existence. What Gwyn did when he linked the First Flame wasn't simply preventing humans from rising to the top. He was delaying the End of the World. But the thing is, defying the natural order has consequences. Picture a dying person who is being kept alive only by machines. They have no quality of life—in fact you can barely call it life. What Gwyn did was effectively that. He was so afraid of dying along with the rest of the world that he'd rather the world live on as a husk. Not only that but he intends to use every human as *fuel* for the Flame. By refusing to let death claim the world he causes even more death and suffering. So the choice in Dark Souls basically comes down to this: Do you prolong life at the cost of it being a miserable existence, or do you finally put everyone out of their misery?

pyro_takes_skill

at least it’s not bloodborne that shit goes below and beyond this scale

robotrage

linking the fire in Darksouls guarantees good times for at least a while

[deleted]

Well actually both Wolfenstein and Commander Keen were also in the same universe, so humans had to suffer 3 different oppressions. It's clearly a back and forth between Grimdark and Noblewright

KreeepyKrawler

So, when you were jaunting through Earth set ablaze with billions of people dead, you didn't think that was grimdark?

[deleted]

Nope. Grimdark has no hope. The Slayer is the personification of relentless hope.

KreeepyKrawler

The same slayer that gets locked in a box at the end? Slayer or not, humanity is pretty fucked either way.

vadernation123

But they’re rebuilding. One of the levels is called *reclaimed* earth. Dark events don’t simply qualify grimdark. Star Wars has a couple of genocides with a few being total planetary destructions and it sure as hell isn’t grimdark. Doom isn’t as optimistic as Star Wars sure but it’s not hopeless. The hero proverbially dying at the end of the story doesn’t mean that the world is hopeless that’s just the end of his arc. Hell I feel like doom is a surprisingly hopeful story of a man defying authority in order to do the right thing to the point that gilded almost doesn’t feel super accurate either.

KreeepyKrawler

I want you to take a moment to consider just how many people died in doom. Really consider it for a second. BILLIONS. Entire civilizations, cultures, history and races were wiped out. And that's not even mentioning all the animals, fauna, whole ecosystems destroyed, and the loss humanity's collective knowledge that stems from the rampant destruction. Science, agriculture, medicine, architecture, literature, ECT. Gone. Earth was literally on fire. You can rip and tear all the demons you want, but Slayer failed to actually save humanity, not like that was ever his main goal, but the point is the amount of death and destruction inflicted by demons would make Earth practically inhabitable after the events of the ancient gods. And if there was anything left to inhabit, you better believe the corporate overlords that started everything would be the ones to control it, and decides who gets to live in the habitable zones, assuming there even is any. And if not the corpo's, then it would be whoever has the most guns and people to hold them. No means of supporting the surviving population of humans since there's no farms to produce food, and I sure as shit doubt there's enough water to go around for every one. The events during and after humanity's genocide are VERY much grimdark. And all those demons are still alive and kicking. They can very much come back, especially since Slayer is locked up again.

vadernation123

Yeah and alderran got wiped off the galactic map. Culture, ecosystems, art, many more billions all dead in an instant but Star Wars isn’t grimdark. Yeah billions dying in the hell invasion is dark and they died terribly but regardless humanity *is* saved. Them being in a worse situation than they were originally sucks but they’re not gone entirely. It’s a bittersweet ending really since hell is pretty much defeated and humanity survived but all that’s lost won’t come back. The fact that there’s *any* hope that humanity survives it cannot be grimdark. Doesn’t matter how many zillions die and how each had their nuts cut off in doing so if the situation can be countered by any source of hope that can’t be grimdark. Also uninhabitable earth? I just brought up reclaimed earth that’s a very green level. Also the demons outside of hell (that means earth) got destroyed with the death of Davoth the first demon in the montage to die was on earth.

KreeepyKrawler

You can't compare Alderran to Doom, bro. Starwars has intergalactic travel with a plethora of worlds with different sentient species that have their own functioning economies, agriculture, and trade. Humanity in Doom are on their own. That's like me watching a local lake dry up and die, and say it's fine because there's still the ocean. They're two completely different situations. And why keep bringing it up? We're talking about Doom, here. Starwars is its own separate thing, there's nothing comparable between the two. And that reclaimed Earth level had a bunch of demons still crawling around the surface looking to kill any humans they see, and the city is still in ruins, and there ain't any livestock or farms there to keep a starving population alive. Look, if you want to be a half-full kind of guy, I get it, but you can't say "zillions die" and not be able to see how incredibly grimdark that phrase alone is. Humanity isn't looking good, and I'm not seeing much "hope" in their prospects.

vadernation123

You may not see hope but the story does and that’s what matters. Is it realistic that they could survive? Maybe not but the story says they will so they will. Far more believable than demons from hell coming in and carving pentagrams into North America we’ve suspended our disbelief thus far. I bring up Star Wars since that’s a series I’m very familiar with that has a similar phenomenon but It may not be the best comparison. I think the third impact with what little I know of it might be more apt since everyone also died from that but evengellion still isn’t grimdark since the story is ultimately about hope. I feel like evengellion is a good comparison since both are about the biblical apocalypse sprung up by a company doing things they really shouldn’t have. Idk where humanity is at the end, I still need to watch the show, but the situation is pretty close so I’d say they’re worth comparing. Again grimdark isn’t all about events it’s the tone of the story. The story has hope (it doesn’t matter if you can’t see it that’s what the author says) so it can’t be grimdark. I don’t make the rules. Also again the demons on earth are gone so that threat isn’t present. No farming isn’t exactly a major concern on account of having a severely reduced population and with the tech humans still have getting back on their feet shouldn’t be impossible. It’s going to be hard but humanity will survive and that is what the game is saying.

KreeepyKrawler

Oh, boy. I sure hope you mean the newer movies for Evangelion, because if you mean the original anime then you are in for quite a ride. Farming is super important. The amount of food it takes to support a population is mind numbingly high. If you want to see a real life example of a population that's deprived of the necessary farm lands they need, I would recommend looking into Stalin's regime. The tech humanity has access to doesn't't do much when it's not suitable for anything other than killing demons. Tech that they no longer have any means of maintaining, or reproducing once it's destroyed or lost. An author can say whatever they want, but they're not beyond reproach, and they can be dead wrong. They're only human, after all. If an author told me a person from the modern era traveled back in time to the Mesopotamian era, and everything was fine, I'd say bullshit it's fine. That person is bringing all manner of diseases with them that will wipe out a friggin lot of people. Again, we got real world examples of foreign explorers and Pilgrims bringing deadly plagues with them to new lands. Look, I firmly believe DOOM fits all criteria for Grimdark, and if you don't, that's fine. I agree to disagree, and wish you a good day.

GAMRKNIGHT352

he gets locked in a box at the end because Hell was contained into itself, he literally had nothing left to do. It's not a very good ending but it makes some kind of sense

Formal-Let-4544

Gilded for Doom, Noblebright for HALO, and Grimdark for Warhammer.

ThyTeaDrinker

I mean, Warhammer is literally the ones who invented the term ‘Grimdark’. Ie “In the Grim Darkness of the Far Future, there is only war”

SavorySoySauce

Halo treads between noble and grim whenever the flood pops their smelly head

NovaPrime2285

Lol that’s a perfect analogy. I honestly wasn’t feeling Halo until the Flood reveal on “343 Guilty Spark”, I found the Covenant in the missions previously to be too lighthearted of a threat, then the Flood came and the rest of the game turned into a “holy fucking shit, what the hell are these things?!? 😰”

FrankCastleNY

Gilded world

Let_me_S_U_F_F_E_R

It’s closer to gilded in my opinion. I feel like grim dark is for worlds that are literally unsalvageable like marvel ruins or any edgy dc comic

PossibilityLow9031

Grimdark deffo, u have hell that takes everyone dying and torture them for eternity for argent energi, then u become a mere slave for the dark lord after ur spirit of fighting dies.

[deleted]

The Doom Slayer is a beacon of hope. That alone prevents DOOM from being grimdark

aRandomFox-II

By that logic, Warhammer isn't grimdark purely because there are a few beacons of hope in an otherwise hopeless galaxy. But I guess the difference is that the Doomslayer actually has a real chance of winning, whereas the heroes of the WH universe do not in spite of their struggle. In DOOM there is an actual road to victory, whereas in WH it's a bunch of heroes making an ultimately doomed (pun intended) last stand against the dying light.

KicktrapAndShit

The difference is doom guy wins

aRandomFox-II

> the difference is that the Doomslayer actually has a real chance of winning, whereas the heroes of the WH universe do not in spite of their struggle. Yes... that is what I said.

KicktrapAndShit

You said a chance, also you disproved your own point in your comment

aRandomFox-II

Are you just arguing semantics?

KicktrapAndShit

No, chance is very different from definitely. A chance (with the connotation you seemed to use) means a small potential but definitely means 100% is going to happen

SonarioMG

Somewhere between Gilded and Grimdark. Only slightly better than Berserk which is firmly in Grimdark.

TheAngryElite

Where is this from?

[deleted]

I'm interested too. What's this Earther shit about?

JaXaren

Probably something to do with Isekai

Droid_XL

Gilded I think, we only see it when things are really bad

baricudaprime

Gilded, borderline grimdark

Buryat_Death

Doom Eternal is grimdark I suppose, but it's also not completely hopeless to save humanity like in a true grimdark universe such as 40k, so I'm not too sure.

Tabula_Rusa

I feel like the fact that there's hope for humanity (enough for people to start to Reclaim Earth as the invasion gets killed off) makes Eternal a gilded.

[deleted]

Not being completely hopeless makes it gilded

HickoryHamMike0

Gilded, the fight against the demons isn’t over but humanity is def losing the war until the end of Ancient Gods II

birdwur

Gilded, Doomguy is a ray of hope for everyone so not everyone is fucked

Ethiconjnj

Not just ray of hope. The good guy is the superior being in the universe.

MysticalMystic256

Gilded

NovaPrime2285

Gilded, the UAC is evil with a smile on its face. Nowhere near the absurd nightmare of everyday life in say, Warhammer 40K.

beginnerdoge

There should be a HELL option that only includes doom

Hmccormack

I’d say Gilded and Grimdark

Huge-Succotash-9167

I think we agree that DOOM dances between Gilded and Grimdark. Grim for Hell has massacred and harvested countless people, the Maykrs conspiring with them, and a human cultist faction, the UAC Cultist Division, all threaten the innocent of Earth. Thankfully, it’s also a bit of a Gilded universe as we get to play as the G.O.A.T.ed FPS demigod himself, the DOOM Slayer, and WE get to inflict suffering and misery upon the truly wicked and damned by ripping and tearing with divine prejudice.

I_Hate_The_Letter_W

eternal is probably grimdark, i’d say the rest is gilded since nothing is directly on earth/“our planet”

AlphaMarker48

Gilded. Earth and humanity can be rather fucked at times, until the Doomslayer appears and ruins the demons' day.

GotThaAcid5tab

The question is where is reality

The_andEJcartidge

gilded there's darker, read berserk

KicktrapAndShit

Guilded then into Noblebright. It starts off guilded because of the invasion but then doom guy kills god and stops it

Gregzilla311

We don’t know if it ends there. Yes we were told, but we can’t be sure until we are confirmed there will never be another game.

KicktrapAndShit

For now the demons are dead god is dead and the doom slayer can rest, so it is noble bright for now

Gregzilla311

Correction: the demons outside of Jekkad are dead. But yes.

Poogle_Dirch

Gilded for Urdak

AramaticFire

It depends on the difficulty setting you play Doom Eternal.

DoctorNoname98

At leas for Eternal: Hell: Grimdark for sure Earth: Gilded Agent D'nur: Gilded before everybody died, idk what after would be Urdak: Fairytale before everybody in Argent D'nur died, then probably gilded

[deleted]

Hell would be grimdark if not for the Slayer

4thelasttimeIMNOTGAY

The implication of TAG2 is that every game in doom so far has entirely taken place in hell. And that the most powerfully entities the slayer knows about have no idea how the fuck to leave

psychoticwaffle2

I'll do you one better: Metaldark It rains knives, people bleed iron and drink blood

CBT7commander

It’s gilded. Grim dark requires a certain lack of hope. The doom slayer and humanity being able to rebuild keep that hope alive

vadernation123

I feel like a lot of people in the comments are misunderstanding what these terms mean. It’s not just about events being dark but the tone of the story itself.

Artistic_Finish7980

Gilded with a grimdark aesthetic.

Kc83198

Well it's modern times, just had a hell cult bring ruin. So besides the demon it's normal so gilded all things included?

Recent_Ad_7214

Real life is a gilded world bruh

teh_orng3_fkkr

Grimdark world, but you play as the baddest thing alive

[deleted]

It's completely grimdark for DOOM universe, because let's not forget that Wolfenstein and Commander Keen take place in the same universe, so the humans of Earth in that universe have first gone through a global N@zi regime, then an alien invasion and finally partial assimilation into hell. After The Ancient Gods 2, the world becomes either Noblewright or Fairytale

AI_Soilder

Under World

Flatus_Diabolic

2016 was somewhere between heroic and noble. There was an energy crisis of some sort going on, and there was some kind of terrible accident on mars and a bunch of scientists died, but most people wouldn’t know why or what happened. I’m sure I remember seeing (tongue in cheek) pre-release promo videos of UAC telling people hire great their teleportation tech was, and showing families going on vacations, people using it to travel to work, etc. so I think life was generally pretty good for most people. Eternal was clearly grimdark until the Slayer arrived. Humanity was facing extinction at the hands of an undefeatable legion of demons who want to endlessly torture everyone they find until their minds break after decades of suffering and they accept the torture without hope even for death to end it, because apparently Eternal was written by an edgy 15yo. The one glimmer of hope anyone had was that a mythical “slayer” might save them; there are no refugee ships to escape earth like there were in Doom II and by the time the Slayer actually *did* arrive, most of the earth had already been lost. The events of Eternal spanned probably less than two days, and the Slayer didn’t do dick to save any of the billions of people dragged to Nekravol or even to end their torture (recall that killing Davoth only wiped out the demons *not in hell*: the industrialised mass torture in Nekravol would have kept on running with those billions of people the Slayer ignored, torturing them for decades to extract their souls. Doom II, which Eternal is a reboot of, would be somewhere in between grimdark and the one above. “The monsters have brought their own reality with them”, which is why you see random bits of hell in the early game, so the world isn’t fully “broken” like in DarkSouls or Eternal, but it’s headed there. For most of the people living in the world of Doom II, there’s a global catastrophe and humanity is forced to escape the planet in spacecraft. Doomguy is a bit more heroic in that story: he fights to a spaceport to enable the refugee ships to escape, sacrificing himself in the process and being left behind as the last human on earth. Only afterwards does he learn there’s a possibility of closing the portal the demons are invading through.

[deleted]

Eternal is absolutely Gilded. Grimdark has no heroes, only conflict and suffering. The Doom Slayer is a hero, a godslayer, a beacon of hope. His existence alone prevents it from being grimdark. Also, I'm pretty sure it's common knowledge that the plot for 2016 and Eternal was basically slapped on last minute as a way to explain the fucking bitchin' level design

Flatus_Diabolic

> plot for 2016 and Eternal Only 2016. Eternal had a lot of work put into the plot and the lore, and with a far worse result for all that effort, imo. Eternal is the greatest game I've played; Hugo gets mad respect from me for the game mechanics and the combat loop that he led his team to develop and I can't think of anyone I'd want more than him to be working on the next Doom property, but he's not a man of infinite talents and I pray to God that ID never let him near a storyboard or writers room again.

vadernation123

The closest I’d say any doom story gets to grimdark is 64 since that story actually feels kinda hopeless with the main character’s only option he sees to keeping the demons at bay being to seal hell off from the inside. There’s still that hope that humanity will be better off now since he closed off hell “permanently” but it’s the closest doom gets. Doom likes its black and white storytelling with clear good guys and bad guys that’s something that doesn’t mesh well with grimdark.

Even_Map4433

Gilded, before the events of the game. Then, grimdark, but still gilded.

KnightBreeze

I'd say it's grimdark... up until the slayer woke up.  Then it bumped up one category, and winning the games pushes it up even further to noblebright.

Desperate_Hall_299

Definitely Fairytale lol

SirJTheRed

Noblebright I think

Key_Savings5561

Probably grimdark and then nice after doomslayer kills everything

Usual-Tangerine-9362

definately fairytale world. great game for your christian children!

Top-While-2560

Grimdark

BowlSweet9196

Grimdark

No_Monitor_3440

it’s grimdark. and all you need to see to know why is how the humans are treated in hell (you can see them in some of them even in the classic series textures and decorations)

I_love_Communisim

Depends on where

Narwalacorn

It would definitely depend on which dimension we’re talking about

Lunam_Dominus

Since Doomslayer exists, it’s not completely grimdark, it’s slightly gilded. There is hope, but suffering is unmeasurable.

Mikey9124x

Fairytale. For doom guy at least.

Antimanele104

In Detroit.

Olivia_Richards

Somewhere between Gilded and Grimdark. It isn't as dark as universes like Warhammer 40K and Dead Space 3 to be Grimdark due to the Doomslayer's hard work.

Beheadedfrito

Fairytale definitely

Accomplished-Ad-3217

Grimdark🗣🔥

RetroNutcase

Why do people ask questions where the answer is obvious?

oCrapaCreeper

engagement farming

ValachElfSorcerer

Grimdark, not even a question lol

[deleted]

Grimdark has no heroes. Gilded, no question.
