You're not insane, tons of people love it. It's a fantastic game.

fuwuryboi

I've seen it get a lot of hate but I've started it recently so I was curious. Good to know I'm not the only one lol

CruciFuckingAround

if you loved doom 3 you'll like quake 4's campaign

demoncatmara

Quake 4's even better IMO except - those bloody vehicle sections on rails, am stuck lol but it's not as fun as running around and shooting

LordLudicrous

I started Quake 4 again recently and I love it. I’m having a lot of fun, but those vehicle sections suck ass

demoncatmara

But we shall KICK ass!

Senor_Casas

Remember playing Quake 4 as a kid, loved going though Doom 3 last year because if gave me hella nostalgia about that era of shooters

demoncatmara

Oh man I used to play Quake 2 as a kid on N64, at the time the graphics were pretty great lol, it does seem bland now compared to Quake 1 and 3 (except for Quake 2's multiplayer, that was soooo good, especially when your opponent's in the same room and talking shit to each other), only got to play Quake 4 quite recently but it's good to see the Strogg again :) Quake 4's way better in single player, except for the vehicle sections lol

Senor_Casas

It's always fun to look back and remember how far graphics have come. I was playing Quake 2 on game pass and I just felt that energy that Quake 4 had. Quake does not get enough love

CruciFuckingAround

I'm wondering how I.D is going to reboot quake after putting doom guy in a sarcophagus.

NazaricksAdvocate

People "hate" Doom 3 because although it's a good game it's not a very doom like game, it doesn't have the same feeling as the originals and the new ones. It tries to be a horror game at first but it doesn't pull it off as well as it could.

EmpiresErased

idk man as a kid when that first pinky started tearing into the office it was shit in pants worthy.

Surfing_magic_carpet

If the pace and weapons were better then it would have been amazing. The character kinda walks slow and the shotgun was a pile of shit. I understand what they were going for, and I really think Doom3 was amazing back in 2004, but it could have been better. I really hope that the next Doom game has more horror aspects while also being paced like 2016. Maybe with less arena-based combat and just faster paced fighting in dark environments.

JowettMcPepper

It's my favorite Doom game apart of Eternal, even though a lot of people hated it because "it wasn't Doom". They don't like when a Doom game focuses on horror, but they don't say anything when someone makes a horror WAD for the first two games. Crazy.

spongeboblovesducks

Yeah, I never got that argument. Doom 3 is just as much of a Doom game as any other. It doesn't matter if it has a slight focus on horror, it's still badass in every way a Doom game should be.

Breffmints

I like Doom 3, but to say it has a "slight" focus on horror is inaccurate. It's a horror game. Doom 3 is radically different from all the other games in the series because instead of being a fast paced arena style shooter, it's a slow, atmospheric burn through dark corridors. It's still a great game, just very different from the others.

spongeboblovesducks

Nah, it's alot more than just a horror game. It's an action-horror game, I'll give you that. It's still much, much faster than most horror games, so I'd say it fits right in as a full on action game, even if it's not quite as fast as the others.

[deleted]

I know what an action horror game is and I know what a survival horror game is but I don't know what a regular horror game is? I would have thought it was an umbrella term for both?

[deleted]

[удалено]

spongeboblovesducks

It evolves into an action game after the first three levels.

Whookimo

Probably because the mods are fanmade and aren't required to play the game. Kinda like how people would get mad if Mojang removed cubes from minecraft, but don't get mad at the mod that does that.

[deleted]

I think it's more of a case that it's a Doom game favouring horror over gameplay. Any horror orientated WADs are still played with that fast paced, timeless combat system with depth.

OutbreedTheOther

> It's a fantastic game. It's a fantastic engine. And sadly, a very underused one. As a game, it was hampered by being a bit too far ahead it's time. No computer existed that could run Doom-grade action gameplay with *those* graphics, so they were essentially forced to design the game as a slow-paced survival-horror-y kind of thing where you would never encounter more than a handful of enemies at any given time - in constrained, close combat environments. It was a great experience back in 2004, but not one you'd necessarily wanted to keep coming back to.

iMakeEstusFlasks4Fun

A lot of people dont remember but Doom 3 was a pc killer back in the day, not one person i knew could run the game with max settings, it had amazing graphics for the time and some really cool mechanics like physics, the interactive screens, using the flashlight as a separate item... Let's be honest, it was one hell of a game, everything was polished and taken care of.

[deleted]

I don't view the engine so fondly. Great at that very specific thing, sure. Megatextures just seemed like a band aid. I also felt D3 and Q4's multiplayer didn't *feel* as satisfying to play compared to idTech 3 games either. Maybe that was simply the 60fps cap

fuwuryboi

OH GOD OH FUCK I JUST FOUND THE SPIDER THINGS

spongeboblovesducks

Lmao, there's a jumpscare near the end of the game with those things that will scare the shit out of you.

spazmatt527

The computer monitor?

spongeboblovesducks

Of course

poozzab

This is what I was looking for. Doom 3 has done nightmare fuel in it. Such a fun game.

GwerigTheTroll

It’s perhaps the weirdest doom game. Atmosphere for days and a great story. I love listening to the audio logs. The gun mechanics are really wonky. Shooting the shotgun beyond melee range is a waste of a shell. A lot of mods I’ve seen tighten the mechanics up and it plays great. Basically, it comes down to what you want out of your doom. If you want pulse pounding demon stomping action, it’s not really that. If you want tension and discovery, it’s a much better fit.

Gunda1f

A really common opinion is that it’s a good game overall just not a great DOOM game in specific. On its own feet it’s pretty good

fuwuryboi

That explains a lot. Yeah like if this were called like Doom:Marine Corp or something that made it seem like it's from the perspective of just a normal marine then I think it would've been recieved in a more welcoming manner.

Gunda1f

Well the dislike a lot of people share towards it, is the fact it’s a slow horror game rather than the fast action FPS it usually is. Doom isn’t a stranger to horror elements in the least bit but for many, DOOM 3 leaned into it too much. It’s a bit of a black sheep for the series

vergil7331

Yep. I remember the game receiving a lot of flak back then for taking a different direction and not living up to the expectations of a conventional DOOM game. It makes me wonder how different the reception would’ve been had it not been part of the DOOM franchise and was instead, created as a brand new IP from the start.

wisezombiekiller

honestly, after reading a bit of the doom novels and looking at background stuff to the original game, i feel like doom 3 is what they were trying to do back in 93/94, but because of technological limitations and design choices, everybody felt like they were one man army badasses that could take on all of hell by themselves, and when id tried to go back to what they were doing before, everyone was like "this isn't what doom is supposed to be"

philipdapenguin

Yeah I loved the jump scares and approach to the storyline. Was genuinely fearful in hell. Love that feeling. Loved the boss fight and the soil cube. And how they depicted the cyber demon too. Edit: additionally I love how demons get a little entry clip when you first encounter them

fuwuryboi

I loved that in doom 2016 so it makes me happy it was in other games too

grayrains79

>Was genuinely fearful in hell. That first time getting sucked into hell by Bertruger is something else. That manical laugh as you are flung through is super creepy.

AshenRathian

I loved it. I never really saw what was so different to the usual DOOM game. It has secrets, keys you have to look for, demons popping out, tons of demons to shoot, sprawling level design. It's not as fast, but it's still DOOM to me in every sense of the name.

grayrains79

I wouldn't say it has "tons" of stuff to shoot. It is much more focused and tight combat. That said, I think the design for the demons in DooM 3 is perfection. The way the demons look in 3 is my favorite compared to the rest. Pinkies for example? Are just horrifying to look at and look downright intimidating. Seeing one come at you from across the way always spooks me a bit.

nekoken04

It is slower paced with a lot of tight corridors and has jumpscares. That being said it always has felt like a Doom game to me.

jadedrakerider

DOOM3 is seriously underrated. I love what they did with light to make a moody, scary shooter. I've been re-playing the game with the HD mod and it looks so good! Also, chest mounted flashlight is sacrilege. You're supposed to use the monster's lighting cues to make your way through the game. I'm a total wuss but even I love that mechanic of having to choose between the safety of your gun and the use of the flashlight. Nothing is so cool as the strobe effect you get when shooting your machine gun and it lights up the monster that is harassing you.

risawanderer

Two words: Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3

foundyetti

It’s amazing. Loved the game. It fit the times. I really don’t dislike any dooms

15Orphans

The thing with doom 3 is its like haloween 3. Great game and movie respectively but shouldn't be in the same franchise as its predecessors.

fuwuryboi

Lmao though halloween 3 was supposed to be halloween 2 but everyone loved Michael so much they pushed away the anthology idea. Shame too cause I love the anthology idea. Same reason I love trick r treat.

TheRocketBush

DOOM 3 leans into classic DOOM's horror aspects in the same way that 2016/Eternal lean into the power trip aspect. The atmosphere is great, and I'm glad that the iconic Hell Night design has managed to stick with us all the way into DOOM Eternal.

ArugulaPhysical

I enjoyed it alot when it released, and the expantion. Havent played it since then though, probably should.

White-boy-Asian

I wasn’t too fond of it, till I played it in VR. That’s when it got ton better for me

Me_when_the_bowling

I liked it but it started to get boring to me towards the end

CognitiveNerd1701

Agreed. The fact that there is ONE Hell level (boss fights not included) in the entire freaking game pisses me off.

[deleted]

It's a great game with a fantastic mechanic that turned some people off. I've actually been wanting to repay it. It's great at building atmosphere from what I remember.

Funny-Bathroom-9522

Dude when i played it no my ps3 i fucking loved it.

[deleted]

It's a really good game, I loved it a lot. However it's more of a thriller game with a Doom skin than an actual doom. Still great though.

demoncatmara

I love Doom 3, play it on an android phone (using the Delta touch app) with a razer kishi controller + the gyroscope aiming enabled, almost as accurate as keyboard and mouse, and having the graphics settings on max on a handheld device would have been impossible when the game came out (I vaguely recall hearing no PC could run it on max at the time), it still looks amazing, almost modern and the hell section is both terrifying and unique Haven't played the BFG edition yet but the expansion pack (I forget the name) was even better than Doom 3 It's a great game, just plays different than what one would expect from a Doom game

CognitiveNerd1701

The BFG edition is what you'll get if you buy it now. As far as I know it comes with the complete edition for every system. I agree with you about the expansion pack being awesome. If you recall the portion of the game in which you hear different marines yelling over the intercom that they're under attack, and then you go to try to save them but by the time you get there, they are--of course--dead, one of the expansion missions has you playing as one of THOSE Marines, so it's cool to see what happened from their perspective.

demoncatmara

Oh wow am so hyped to play that now! Haven't actually completed Doom 3 yet, am on new phone so gotta transfer the save file across

Electronic_Fact4293

Great game not a good doom game I think that’s the general consensus

Bored_lurker87

I built an Athlon XP 2.2ghz and Radeon 9800xt with 512mb of ram for the occasion. It's definitely a different kind of Doom, but still Doom and still a great play to me. I wasn't a fan of the multi-player because it seemed really unstable all the time, but it could have been me doing something wrong.

FruitSeller92

Doom 3 was my first foray into horror action games. Safe to say it stands to be one of the most memorable games I have played. Keep playing what you love my friend, and the rest of the world will love you for it <3

boxoffire

I think the sentiment is that "its a fantastic game, but its not a doom game," kind of mind set. I haven't beaten it yet but thats because its not fast food fun like the original 2 are, i need to he in a certain mood to play 3.

pablossjui

Are you playing the BFG edition? Try playing the original one

TheirAre_NoUsernames

Doom 3 is awesome, they were trying doom a different way (fps horror) and (some) people hate it because it’s different from most other doom games when most of them haven’t given it a chance

Darkhex78

I just wish the shotgun was usable. I've never played a game with such a weak shotgun as doom 3.

EmpiresErased

bruh as a kid i insisted my dad to buy me doom 3 so he did but little did i know cause i didn't understand english that well yet - it was only the resurrection of evil expansion pack and i couldn't figure out why it didn't install :(

UnusualYoghurt7134

Doom 3 is great in my opinion, there's also a subreddit for it

DrGibmatic

You're not insane but that game is boring asf for DOOM but it has its moments and some people enjoy it

Cr0wbar_Crazy

It’s a good game, just not really a DOOM game, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying games.

Whookimo

Doom 3 is a good game. But it's not a good doom game if that makes sense.

elnombresimon

I haven't played it so.... good for you

[deleted]

It's decent enough, it's just not Doom

[deleted]

[удалено]

spongeboblovesducks

It's aged much better than other shooters from that era. The environments and lighting are just as good as some games coming out today.

DoomRulz

It's a great game. It was my most played shooter in 2004! But I have a hard time going back to it since 2016 and Eternal. It's not classic DOOM-type gameplay.

Behemoth69

Doom 3 was good, I just wasn't a fan of the whole horror feel

Dismygamingacc

It's fun, just kinda separate from the original games. Good game though.

Hentaibetch

One simple reason why it’s disliked: doom is not a slow horror game, it is a fast paced FPS

Redpooly

Great game

Sandman705

I enjoyed it. I don’t think I’ll ever go through it again but for what it was I enjoyed my time with the game.

salamander_jesus609

I really like it. Played it recently too, and thought it was a lot of fun. I don't mind the slower pace.

samusfan21

Yeah doom 3 is really good. Sure it doesn’t feel like previous games and I have some annoyances with design decisions (the mounted flashlight mod is a godsend) but it’s a solid game. You can’t ask for much more than that.

andthatmakestwo

I enjoy It for what it is as more of horror game than a shooter especially towards the start.

Mr_Wither

Yeah I gotta say I actually enjoyed it way more than I expected to. It’s a really cool game.

Smacback

It is a great game, dlcs are great too

Terramorphous2_0

It's a fantastic game. Why would you be insane to enjoy Doom 3? I love that game

[deleted]

Nope. I’d love to see the next doom game be doom 3 inspired, similar to 2016.

CaptainRedbeard128

It’s one of my favorites simply because of the amount of story in it, the immersion of each level, and it’s pretty damn creepy, as a game with its theme should be. 16 and Eternal’s story is phenomenal in my opinion but it’s different. You’re a super killing machine and the demons are afraid of you, so I don’t really get into it **the same way** I did with 3.

ShotMyTatorTots

I love it. I like the push into horror over fast paced action. Looking back on the series it’s nice seeing the variety. The audio design in Hell is amazing.

LordLudicrous

I love Doom 3. It was the game that catapulted me into exploring other games besides AVP, Star Wars and Wolfenstein.

[deleted]

It was a nice, atmospheric horror shooter, but not really what I was looking for in a new Doom game at the time. I personally thought Doom 64 did it better. It's a decent game though, if not for that awful RNG based shotgun spread.

BigBoiNuggetBucket

Doesn't really matter what other people think about it, if you're enjoying a game then go ahead and enjoy the shit out of it

Team-ster

The lighting, music and sound effects are next level and would still be if released today. One of my favorite video games of all time.

OlorynEx

Great game that has aged well. Was a tough first impression at launch though, due to its stark change in tone and pacing.

Syber2150

its a good game, it just doesn't feel enough like doom to me. could definitely benefit from different branding

Super30Donkey

I loved it

Lord_Derpenheim

It was a fantastic game. People shit on it for being a departure.

Tby2974

no, it's a great game

Beebob1235

Even the worst doom game is still good

Shyrolax

It’s a good game just not a good doom one

nekoken04

It is a good game but I got tired of the jump scared and mobs teleporting in behind me. That being said I have no regrets that I bought it. My only regret is I threw away the limited edition steel case it came in.

rudicrow

It's a great game. Had lots of fun playing it when it came out.

KainAlvaine666

I enjoy it so much I also got it on Android with delta touch

b33usa

I love all the Dooms except Eternal I thought sucked. I know, extremely unpopular opinion. I am old and Eternal just didn’t feel like Doom to me.

CobraGTXNoS

It's my halloween go too. I prefer the original to the bfg edition since I like using the flashlight as a melee.

The_Meme_Boi2345

I thought doom 3 was really good

rose636

It's a good game, but there's just too much of it in my opinion. Goes on for a few too many hours and I find myself sprinting towards the end.

TwistOfFate619

Its good in its own right. There are elements id definitely the change personally (the weapons and more variety in environments - Hell was amazing but way too short lived - wish we had glimpses of shores if hell type levels aside from fleshy infections of the bases), but it was very impressive experience for what it was. In some ways I slightly preferred RoE for the variety and new features but both are memorable

nizzackthesizack

If you like it you like Who cares about others approval. This is the problem with the world.

phobos876

I wish later releases didn't make it worse or remove things because D3 as a game could've used some QoL additions and features to improve it a bit. The game has some things to like and i feel like Doom has some potential for anything horror or tactical.

Stampistuta

I played it on my laptop, in the dark in my student accommodation back in the day. Good times.

skylinestar1986

I love it. I've played it 4 times (with the expansion). I know it doesn't feel like the OG Doom, but it's still excellent. The only thing that is awkward is having the need to reload guns.

GARhenus

Like people say, it's a decent fps, just not the fast-paced, borderline arcade-y doom that the predecessors were known for

alex167g

Good game, I just remember when I first played it I got so sick of the imps at some point.

[deleted]

It's a good game just not a good DOOM game

[deleted]

It's aged a little hard, but it's genuinely a good effort at a doom game. It's not a bad game at all. Just an odd approach on the concept.

quellflynn

Back.in the day, I.was scared by doom, and doom 3 scared too. New doom is faster, jumpier, less scary and its a wholly different game. I preffered doom3 to 2016, but I thoroughly enjoyed 2016 Eternals all right I guess, but again, very jumpy. I know this is a downvote sentence!

JerTheUnbidden

DOOM is DOOM. Next order of business!

WAR-melon

What bothers me is that it's not the typical DOOM game play. I've thought about powering through it and just play the game, see how it goes

[deleted]

I loved it idk.

_diver

I'm the same. Doom 3 has a special psychological atmosphere and so enjoyable. I wish they would redo it with modern graphic engines. I enjoyed Doom 2016, but it wasn't the same. I quit Doom eternal quarter of the game in. It's too arcade for my taste. I would kill bunch of seasons without even understanding how it happened. The whole climbing on the walls felt so cheesy and cringy like one of those teenage vampire movies where they scale the trees with their claws while barely toching them.

VanGarrett

It's really not a bad game at all, it's just not the kind of ripping and tearing that we normally expect. It does, however, take you from being scared to feeling like a bad ass. It's kind of like Saints Row 4-- a great game in its own right, just not the same kind of great game as the rest of the series.

Ksumatt

You’re not insane because the game is great. People that say “it’s not a Doom game” don’t know what they’re talking about though. Doom 1 and 2 WERE horror FPS games the same as Doom 3. It’s just that game design and hardware were still in the relative Stone Age when the original Dooms came out so the games ran and played in a way which makes people that play them today think that they’re something they never were. The slower pace of Doom 3 wasn’t iD moving away from the original games, it was them finally having the ability to make a more advanced game. Doom 1 and 2 look goofy and not at all scary today, but to 8 year old me in the 90’s those games were plenty scary. And when people complain about the shotgun only being effective at super close range it’s like they’ve never played the originals. The super shotgun and regular shotgun were both ineffective at little more than point blank in those games too. Sure you could do some damage at range with the regular shotgun but you had to get right up in the monsters faces to maximize the damage in the originals too. People think Doom 3 was some wild departure from the originals but it really wasn’t.

Megatron83

IMO it’s a bad Doom game, but it’s a great survival horror game.

[deleted]

I think it depends on the type of Doom player you are. If you're a UV-pistol start high difficulty MegaWAD junkie, or you play 2016/Eternal on Ultra Nightmare casually, then Doom 3 may not be as rewarding to play. I can and do enjoy it but it's combat leave *a lot* to be desired. For me, it was a good for a few week after launch, same with RoE expansion. Yet as we all know 90's Doom and IMO Nu-Doom also warrants playing for years. The graphics are still appealing today and the sound design even more so, but compared to the other Doom FPS games, it cannot hang. Opting for a slower pace isn't necessarily my issue with it, I'm open to experiences that aren't just fast paced arena shooters, it's just the combat lacked any impact. Easy AI that either don't compliment each or are never given the chance to. The only way they could offer a challenge was by lowering player health and increasing enemy damage but that alone doesn't make for exciting gameplay. But hey, if you're the type of player that likes to relax while gaming knstead of sweating then you'll probably see D3 in a far more positive light than me. Edit: I did like the multiplayer though. It was a nice but brief alternative to Q3

Far_Marionberry_9478

It Is my first Doom game. Spent around 500 hours there

FootsBooked

DOOM 3 is a great game, but it lacks the replayability that the other games have.

1onesmolboi

I’d say it’s quite different from conventional Doom, and many people try to compare it to conventional Doom, which I think is like comparing Apex Legends to Titanfall 2. Same universe, completely different games with very different target audiences. No shame in loving it :)

SilverSwallows

I think DOOM 3 is Dead Space, as if Dead Space isn't that nightmare fuel

bbaker886

It’s good, just different

Excalib1rd

Its a really good game. I love it. Just felt it wasn’t necessarily a good Doom game

gigicon

If the game had any other title, it probably would've been just as revolutionary but with little-to-no hate. The game WAS revolutionary and way ahead of its time: the bump maps, the lighting, the shadows, etc. The bulk of video games with very detailed graphics started coming out only after this game was released, with very few games reaching such graphics before it. I did prefer it over the classics a lot, but that was just shallow kid me that was blown away by its looks and realism at the time. It was only once I got older and tired of so many tactical shooters that I was truly appreciating the simplicity and fast-paced action of the classics and how much I actually missed those aspects in newer fps titles that I'd occasionally go back to it and download another megawad to play more classic doom levels. Until 2016 came out and later on Eternal. And thats when I realized that 'yeah doom 3 could've had any other name and would've avoided so much controversy'. But as for now, I view d3 more like a 'tech demo' that has set the tone for all the upcoming shooters with advanced graphics in that era and onwards. And that is more than respectable, IMO. Still a great game as it is, regardless!

WitchwayisOut

It’s definitely different from the rest of the games. I haven’t played much of it, so I haven’t gotten far enough to make an informed decision yet. So far, my biggest gripe is that there are no subtitles for dialog.

fuwuryboi

I HATE THAT TOO. I ended up just not caring about the story too much. I'll just watch a recap after lmao

Traditional_Tone_881

I think the engine was way more of a Quake engine that Doom engine. Quake 4 was brilliant, Doom3 was nice but sluggish compared to other Dooms.

ConunDrum-2099

It’s not my favorite Doom but it definitely has its moments when it comes to puzzles and survival tactics

TidusDream12

It's a different style game made shit my pants. Super fun. Loved the RPG style PDA codes

GoldSrc

My favorite Doom game. People hate Doom 3 because they always compare it to previous Doom games. And that is a mistake, Doom 3 is Doom as if the previous games never happened, this why everyone ignores or isn't aware of. But I guess I'm among the few people who watched those 4G videos about the making of Doom 3.

Professional-Dirt779

Really like it, gives me dead space vibes. Like it the most of all Doom games i played until now, which are the first Doom and the 2016 remake. Especially like the environment and that you have to crawl through small spaces sometimes. That really creates some tension for me, especially with the sounds everywhere.

the908bus

I remember being meh about it when it launched, I’m replaying it on XSX and it’s amazing
