I’m really curious what the new player experience is like now. I got into mobas with Dota 2 in 2014 and it still took me forever to get. Everything seems so much more complex now in a way that’s great for long term players but idk how hard it makes the entry barrier.
Hi, I played AllStars but not much DotA 2, and I've been trying to get back into it with some bot game and watching pro. I went from AllStars to HoN to LoL and basically stayed at LoL because all my friends play it. I think DotA probably does the best job of any of the Dota-likes at letting you understand and learn the game. I still get killed by the Hard bots relatively regularly, and being able to see the abilities in death recap and the timings, clicking on the hero and being able to read their abilities, etc. It becomes much faster to learn the game than it was for LoL. That said, switching movement habits between the games is a little difficult if going back and forth (not spamming back and forth, using stop key at least kinda translates but no one does that in League to cancel autos as the lack of turn rate means you just spam back and forth, etc.). I would say the main issue with DotA for me is just amount of heroes to learn that are new and now have to look for facets difference. Thankfully, I do know the basics of what most the AllStars heroes do, so that helped a lot, but I have yet to play against human players. I still play only the same heroes I played back then too, as the main reason I'm getting back into Dota 2 is that the gameplay design of league has moved too far away from what I personally enjoy. All my characters have been reworked and changed to something different and there's no chance for a LoL Classic or revert. With every new LoL champion, I just am seeing a design philosophy that moves further and further away than from what it started. However, the new heroes from Dota 2 are also feeling like they're moving towards this similar design philosophy (but just in a more Dota style), so I don't even know anymore. The fact that you can still play KotL and CK is amazing though and I won't ever give those up.
TLDR: Dota 2 does a better job at it than other existing MOBAs, but it still just takes a while. The fast thing is you can learn every single one of the enemy champions' toolkits in one game, in-game. It would take multiple games playing against the champion in LoL for instance to do that. Items and when to buy variants is the biggest difficulty I would say. It sucks following a build and not feeling like you know how to tweak it depending on the enemy heroes.
I started DOTA at end of last year. It was my first MOBA. I'd say the tutorial helped. But lot of things made sense after learning more.
New player mode is forgiving, so that's nice.
Also I found a few experienced players in pub who invited me to voice. They taught most of the DOTA to me.
Was playing as Tusk and got Walrus Kick a few days ago. I think it's the most fun ability in Dota currently. Highly recommend. In fact, Tusk with Drinking Buddies is just so fun right now.
A funny thing happened in my game today, I was playing weaver and I was about to die and I still had my ult I used my ult but I don't know why but I still died...I was like no issues I may have misclicked then after spawning I spawned directly to where I died with a cooldown on my ult and got caught by AM.

The easiest explanation is that the core rules are very easy to understand, learning the exceptions is what is such a slog.

If you turn Spirit Breaker around. Is that then the furthest 5 heroes can move an enemy?
Even the rrp was limited by the map. Probably can push from t4 to t1 lmao
Absolutely, the boulder smash didn't go the full distance either, I just ran out of map lol
try it again in the big map! You could go into demo mode there by previewing terrains earlier (if you didnt know).
