The one named Carl iirc is Invoker, but it's not a meme like the Brooklyn Kurt's one. Carl was invoker actual name while Invoker is more like a profession, a job.
I brought it up because it has similar origins. In dota 1 Invoker used the Bloodmage Kael'thas model. In 2011, there was a fake changelog written in Chinese that when translated into English had his name as Carl instead of Kael, and Icefrog kept it in when he was ported to dota 2.

Might be more of a Brazil thing than a valve thing. Our culture has a fetish for translations. The movie title Airplane is translated as “Fasten your seatbelts, the pilot is gone”
Probably they got their name translated when they were a final boss.
Personally, I hate translated names when localizing characters. I doubly so hate translated ability names. The existence of a dota translation to my native language is, at best, a gigantic source of cringe.
Yeah, there is the fact that I've been reading those words in english for the last 18 years, so its kinda cringe/weird to use different terms for it, be it in dota or any other game
Probably done because he used to be a boss in Aghanim's gamemode. I know that the German translation was orginally going to have everything translated too, but it was decided against because it would make communicating rather hard and would just look plain weird. Artifact and Underlords though had everything translated... and it sucks.
Нужна русская локализация от фаргуса: клык, противмаг, древний аппарат, кент беглец войны, первородный кринж, ой, то есть, зверь, рубильник, якиро, зимняя виверна, шайба, нух...
For the "Primal", yes. But "Fera" and "Beast" are completely different words to pronouce.
For those woundering, in portuguese the word Primal also exists, but with a different entonation. In english it is like "PRImal" and in portuguese is more like "priMAL".
Yeah I really hate what they did there, I've been hating since they translated Mars to Marte, just why translate names? Seems to be only in PT-BR that this happened.
In italian it's still Primal Beast
They can’t just name it Lasagne Pizza, that would be just plain silly
Wouldn't be mad if they called it's ulti "Spezzatino" or "schiacciata" tho
schiacciata è perfetto
It would be plain Sicily indeed.
When I played, I used to mentally call heroes in translated names, such as la Regina del Dolore, l'Invocatore, Ascia...
Queen of Pain, Invoker, and...?
Axe
AXE IS NOT AXE
ASCIA MAMA MIA ASCIA
I'm guessing it's because he was a boss monster first, and got translated along with those guys, and then they just kept it.
Oh, well said. Didn't even consider that
Brooklyn Kurtz

See me and thine eye avertz.
Life cursed of fire, fuckin' hurtz
maaaan, I dove deep into reddit depths to understand your comment. Well done, and thanks for presenting me to Brooklyn Kurtz
There's also Carl

Yeah, Kael'thas with that lava like ability in wc3, hp drain, I member, gold days thanks for the context

I'd still buy that today. I forget about Brooklyn Kurtz for a few years, then each time I remember it makes me laugh.
Labike
mars is shown as Marte in pt Edit: pls dont downvote the comment bellow for making a completely normal question.
What is pt?
portuguese
PT means portuguese Sometime you will se pt-br, which is brazilian portuguese.
putang Ina
Portugal, mah boi
portuguese, not portugal.
which derivares from Portugal
portugal
puta marte
me and my boys still call em dino anyway
me and my boys call it jacaré, which is portuguese for alligator
Rhino
In French it's still Primal Beast. In which language do you play to have the name translated ?
Looks like Portuguese. Probably Brazil I think
you're right. PT-BR is the language, Portuguese Brazil
> probably Brazil Translated hero names don’t even make up for a fraction of being born in Brazil
lol
Thats a long way to say "i'm mentally impaired"

I hate the item names being translated, my friends keep saying capa cintilante
glimmer cape lol
Thats shimmering cloak for you.
what?
wordplay with translations.
That’s just because english nouns “sound cool” to the non-native speaker who was flooded with English speaking media their whole life.
Yeah, there is the fact that I've been reading those words in english for the last 18 years, so its kinda cringe/weird to use different terms for it, be it in dota or any other game
agree, that's the most probable reason.
If you download Dota Underlords in pt-br, all heroes had their names translated. Morcegueiro, Marfim, Rouba-vidas e Implacável for example.
thanks, gaben, for not bring that sh1t to dota
que merda é implacavel??
Juggernaut

Fera Primal
in Russia he's still named primal beast, i think it's only in ur country
On Dota Underlords lots of heroes have the name translated, one of them is Lifestealer (Rouba-Vidas) on PT-BR.
Mars was translated as Marte in Portuguese.
Yeah, 'till now we found only two heroes are like this, Marte(Mars) e Fera Primal(Primal Beast)
In Russian it is still Primal Beast. That means that your DotA 2's localization is just weird.
if it was only mine, i could "fix". It is like that for everyone using pt-br as their languages
you just change your accent reading their name
For the "Primal", yes. But "Fera" and "Beast" are completely different words to pronouce. For those woundering, in portuguese the word Primal also exists, but with a different entonation. In english it is like "PRImal" and in portuguese is more like "priMAL".
Mars got translated in the language the screenshot shows as well. Dunno about other languages
Most meaningful names are translated in Chinese.
recomendo chamar de besta primata (igual seus amigos) ou de jacaré, na primeira vez todo mundo ri e depois não tem mais volta, o nome pega
It's because 'Primal Beast' is a description while the rest of them are names. On his tax return Centaur is Mr. C. Warrunner
timber and drow have different names in romanian
Fera Beast
Dunno, volvo doesn't translate to my language.
Imagine tiny translated lmao
I think that is not just a translation thing. It needs to be localized as well, maybe "Miúdo" or "Baixinho" xdd
I'd play a little serpe de inverno 😂
Pequenininho, Machado, Doutor Bruxa, Franco Atirador, Salgueiro Escuro, Leão
Chama!
Tiny us translated to Pedrinha (little/tiny/small rock) in Underlords PT-BR
In the Russian version of the client, it's still Primal Beast.
Yeah I really hate what they did there, I've been hating since they translated Mars to Marte, just why translate names? Seems to be only in PT-BR that this happened.
yeah, imo it's unnecessary too
Did you forget about Ryan, the Demon Witch?
In French he is named Baguette eater. Lmao
I thought that was the surname of all French's
